According to an Otaku USA Magazine article, the show is being produced by the Japanese animation studio Mother which tapped Takao Kato as the chief director and Junichi Yamamoto as the director. Naoko Akusawa is joining on as the art director with Chizuru Kobayashi handling the character designs.

Jiro is paired with Akari Watanabe, a gyaru who finds Jiro repulsive at first, but they agree to attain enough points so that they can switch partners to the people they really like.”

The anime is written by Naruhisa Arakawa with music from Yuri Habuka.

There is no update yet on when it will premier in North America or other markets.

Refraktor Returns! Decepticon Transforms Into Canon EOS R5 Camera

Recently we covered the upcoming Optimus Prime figure that transforms into a Canon DSLR. So naturally, many people wondered why Refraktor wasn’t also present since being a camera was that Decepticon’s gimmick. Wonder no more as Hasbro Pulse announced that Refractor would join Prime as an officially licensed (80% scale) EOS R5 Camera.

Sadly, Refraktor does not combine three transformers into one camera. Instead, Refractor is just one robot. However, the Decepticon comes with a camera accessory split into three pieces, but the parts do not transform into robot mode.  Refraktor is priced at $144.99 and is expected to ship on the 25th of May, 2023. Vampire Hunter D’s New Statue Is Just Amazing

Fans of Vampire Hunter D rejoice! A massive new statue is on the way showing off the pale hero from Figurama Collectors. This statue is based on D as he appeared in the second animated feature, Bloodlust, and Yoshitaka Amano’s artwork. D is astride his mechanical steed, mowing down the unfortunate souls who have been turned into vampires. The detail here is spectacular. Even the symbiote on D’s Left Hand is present. D also has interchangeable heads showing off his porcelain beauty or his vampiric rage.

The statue stands over 30″ tall and is made from mixed media: polystone, PVC, etc. Only 650 pieces are being made, and Yoshitaka Amano signs each. This work of art is priced at $1,980, and a payment plan is available from Figurama Collectors.

This version of D is closely modeled after the illustrations of Yoshitaka Amano featured in the Vampire Hunter D novels. This influence is palpable in the ornate touches of the statue. D is seated astride his rearing cybernetic horse with his crescent longsword and sentient symbiote, Left Hand. The snarling fangs of his fierce expression are surrounded by flowing dark hair, and his head is topped with a pointed hat of the most intricate gothic detail. The shining diecast metal of D’s longsword and the impassioned expression of Left Hand are indistinguishable from the movie. D’s armor is an inky black highlighted by fine gold ornamentations reminiscent of Amano’s work, and the long swoop of his dark cape curves near the base. Each panel and wiry fiber of the cybernetic horse can be made out as it rears onto its hind legs, suspended in movement above graveyard markers.  Mechanical hooves seem to drip with moisture from the angled base below, featuring a length of rock and twisting branches that jut from a rippling pool of water. Three red-eyed ghouls reach from the murky depths towards the majestic frame of D and his horse suspended in battle.

The sequel to the 1985 adaptation of Hideyuki Kikuchi’s manga was a visual delight but a bit of a mess regarding the narrative. The ’85 film has a more straightforward story, and a bit of an arc for D, whereas Bloodlust throws so much at you that D gets lost in the mix.

‘The Orville’ Season 4 is More Likely as The Series is One of Hulu’s Top Originals

Is this a good omen for fans of The Orville? A fourth season of The Orville seems much more likely since it’s been revealed that Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi series is one of Hulu’s most in-demand original series.

From The Wrap

The third season of “The Orville” was its first as a Hulu original. (Its first two seasons aired on Fox.) The demand for its third season was significantly higher than either of the two previous seasons, showing the importance of finding the right home for content. “The Orville” seems to have finally taken off as a Hulu original, which bodes well for future seasons of the show.

The Orville, which can best be described as a love letter to both classic Star Trek and TNG (with a sense of humor) has gained dedicated, growing fan following. However, critics savaged the first season, which premiered on Fox in 2017. The second season was infinitely better received (100% Fresh), but the series was still lost in the soup of linear television. A third season was in doubt, until Hulu greenlit New Horizons, which premiered earlier this year.

The chart below (courtesy Parrot Analytics) shows that demand for The Orville is “outstanding,” and that Only Murders in The Building edges it out slightly.  The other top series were animation, anime and Saturday Night Live.

The Orville is now also available on Disney+, in a move which series creator Seth MacFarlane calls “a game changer” in an interview with TVLine.

“My hope is that when the show drops on Disney+, the people who haven’t yet discovered [The Orville] will suddenly give it a chance,” MacFarlane said. “That’s a potential game changer for us.

“I think that creatively and audience-wise, when people sit down and give the show a chance, it upends their expectations,” he added. “The biggest burden with the show is preconceptions. People think it’s one thing — there are people out there who think it’s a sitcom —  and when they sit down to watch it they realize its something completely different. Once you get people’s eyeballs on it, the show does the work, its speaks for itself, and people tend to be hooked.”

Fans of The Orville have been pushing hard for a fourth season. MacFarlane said he absolutely wants to do it, but that there’s currently a 50:50 chance and that the situation is “tricky” given his increasingly busy schedule with other projects.

While the call is ultimately up to Disney, the early numbers for New Horizons are very encouraging indeed.

One night, Kou encounters a bizarre girl named Nazuna Nanakusa who believes that people stay awake during the night because they are dissatisfied with how they spent their day and cannot rest until they release their inhibitions. Nazuna offers to help Kou with his sleep issues and invites him over to her place, where she convinces him to share a futon with her. Feeling uncomfortable, Kou only pretends to doze off—which is when Nazuna suddenly bites his neck and reveals herself to be a vampire!

While Kou thinks the bite will turn him into a vampire, the specifics of transforming are not that simple. In order to change, he must be bitten by someone he truly loves. Ready to let go of his dreary mortal life, Kou decides on a new goal: he will fall in love with Nazuna and become a vampire.”

Cannon Film’s He-Man & Skeletor Coming To The MasterVerse!

The official Masters of the Universe Twitter account has announced that Frank Langella and Dolph Lundgren are joining Mattel’s MasterVerse action figure line!

OK, I will take the MasterVerse action figure series seriously if we get more of these rarities. The Masters of the Universe film from 1987 didn’t have the enormous action figure push you thought it would have back in the day. We didn’t get a film-accurate version of He-Man or Skeletor until decades later in Mattel’s MotU Classics series. Trying to get a hold of those figures now is pricey.

Mattel

Mattel

The photos show that He-Man comes with a dagger, Power Sword, and blaster. Skeletor is a bit harder to make out. He has the Havoc Staff and possibly some dagger attached to his belt. No Cosmic Key so far, but maybe we’ll get a Gwildor figure in the next wave?

Masters of the Universe was a less than faithful live-action adaptation of the Filmation cartoon and mini-comics. It was produced by The Cannon Group in 1987, alongside the company’s 30+ other films that year, including Over The Top and the disastrous Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Cannon films typically had smaller budgets than other mainstream movies, which showed. However, MotU wasn’t what I would call “cheap.” It was a thrifty production, but the costumes and the few Eternia sets were impressive. To get the most out of the budget, director Gary Goddard and producers Golan and Globus had to set most of the film’s plot in then-current-day California.

I had just turned seven when the film was in theatres, seeing it on my birthday. While I was disappointed that the movie lacked some things I loved about He-Man, I remember enjoying the film quite a bit. Then again, I was raised in an early ’80s VHS rental store. So, I was used to seeing an array of terrible films, and MotU wasn’t one of those. It has serious flaws, but Frank Langella’s performance as Skeletor is worth the price of admission alone. Meg Foster also makes for a great Evil-Lyn. And, as always, I loved seeing Billy Barty on screen.

Dolph Lundgren made for a good He-Man as a physical representation, but his accent was the real inhibitor to his performance. It would have been the same if Arnold or Sly had been in the loincloth. The role calls for a charismatic man of great strength, and that’s not an easy thing to cast during the 1980s.
