RUMOR: DC Comics is Getting Ready to License Out Its Comic Books?

Could DC Comics be getting ready to license out its superhero comic books instead of publishing them in-house, as they’ve done for over 80 years?

There does seem to be mounting evidence that DC Comics is in for some major upheaval under Warner Bros. Discovery. Company CEO David Zaslav has no problem cutting anything and everything that he doesn’t think is going to make money. DC is not immune to these cuts. In fact, once of the highest profile cuts Zaslav has made was the cancellation of the $90 million Batgirl movie for HBO Max.

DC Comics Being Told to Get Character Bibles Together?

The latest rumor comes from comic book YouTuber Wes at Thinking Critical who claims that DC Comics has been told to get character bibles together. A character bible is a document that outlines the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ of company-owned character IP, and is often used as a guideline for licensees.

“Warner Bros Discovery have directed the personnel at DC Comics to start creating character bibles for all the characters. Why would you need character bibles now?” Wes asked. “Is it because David Zaslav wants a more continuity among the characters, like a more baseline version of the characters, or is it something else?”

Would Tim Drake have been made bisexual if the official character bible explicitly stated he was straight? Probably not.

This wouldn’t be concerning on its own, but there is supporting evidence that DC Comics might be thinking about outsourcing its comic book production. Earlier in the month Wes also reported that he’d heard DC Comics was being told to turn over all sales and accounting data to Warner Bros. Discovery management, which would indicate that they’re taking a good, hard look at DC Comics’ bottom line.

DC Comics Expenses Already Being Cut?

Supporting evidence that DC Comics’ expenses are already being cut includes the publisher not having a booth at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the cancellation of the DC Fandome event, and DC Comics editorial being ousted from their posh offices in Burbank to a new hot desk arrangement. Even before the merger with Discovery, editorial staff was being slashed at DC Comics by previous owner AT&T.

Corporations put money into divisions they believe will pay out dividends, and it appears that the comic book publishing arm of DC has been getting downgraded, again and again. Like Milton from Office Space, if feels like they’re about to move DC Comics into the basement at Warner Bros Discovery.

Knowing this, it’s not a stretch to imagine that David Zaslav would see the financial sense in simply outsourcing comic book production to a third party, while retaining a skeleton crew of brand managers to make sure the licensees don’t deviate from the character bibles.

Is DC Comics desperate for new revenue?

According to Thinking Critical, Warner Bros. Discovery was demanding that DC turned over the historical sales data of the company from the past few decades to analyze trends. Earlier this week, it was suddenly announced that DC Comics has added another distributor — Universal Distribution — in an effort to increase their distribution efforts. Could Zaslav have lit a fire under DC Comics executives to increase sales… or else?

The McFarlane Factor?

Comic book legend, Image Comics co-founder and toy company entrepreneur Todd McFarlane might be a potential candidate to take on the DC Comics license, should Warner Bros. Discovery decide it’s no longer worth producing comic books in-house.

McFarlane is no stranger to DC Comics, having worked on DC series including Batman in the past. In fact, he’s getting ready to launch another Batman/Spawn crossover book, and is hoping it’ll be the comic book event of the century.

McFarlane’s toy company is currently producing a line of DC Comics action figures called “Page Punchers,” which include a pack-in comic book that Todd McFarlane Productions is overseeing. Could this be a test to see how McFarlane and company would handle DC characters if granted the license?

Todd McFarlane is behind this pack-in comic. Is this a test to see if he could handle the DC Comics license?

According to rumors by other YouTubers (including former DC Comics artist Ethan Van Sciver) a group of wealthy comic book fans had approached DC Comics about the license while it was still owned by AT&T. The word that group included Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, whose Skybound Entertainment is in talks to acquire the Transformers and G.I. Joe licenses from Hasbro.

Wes from Thinking Critical claims that the asking price for the DC Comics license under AT&T was astronomical, but that Warner Bros. Discovery could be much more reasonable as they’re open to offloading projects and IP that aren’t central to their business. In fact, it’s being said they’re actively shopping around previously greenlit projects to their competitors, like The Batman animated series, to recoup some expenses.

Movies based on DC Comics characters are extremely important to David Zaslav. The actual comic books are not.

It’s no stretch at all to imagine Warner Bros Discovery making the decision to view DC Comics and the DC Superheroes as movie and television IP first, and to license out comic book production to a company like Dark Horse, Image, or IDW like so many other movie studios and video game companies have done for decades.

It’ll be the end of an era, for sure. But others may welcome the change, as some of the publisher’s more recent hard push into politics has alienated some longtime fans.

Batman and Superman comic books will undoubtedly exist for decades to comic. The question simply is, who will be making them?

The Gremlins Are Self-Aware! ‘Gremlins 2’ Tattoo 2-Pack Coming

The best thing about the 1990 sequel to Gremlins was when we were treated to a non-stop barrage of gags and in-jokes. One of those is when one Gremlin tattoos another (with a soldering iron somehow) with the WB shield. The scene only lasted a few seconds. The sequel had lost its horror movie edge, but it allowed the director to have some fun at the expense of Warner Brothers.

Now, this tiny bit of fourth-wall-breaking can be yours, thanks to NECA! The Tattoo Gremlins 2pk comes with both the tattoo artist and the tattooed creature. Like previous NECA figures from this franchise, the Gremlins stand 7″ tall and come with detailed accessories and softgoods clothing. Expect this package to arrive in January.

It was no secret that Joe Dante didn’t want to do a sequel to Gremlins, but you would never know it. While the first film isn’t self-referential, the sequel, The New Batch, pokes lots of fun at itself, the mythos, and Warner Bros. I mean, they break the fourth wall with a Hulk Hogan cameo after all. I’m glad that NECA is making figures based on some of these very short gags.

Now, when can we get a Christopher Lee as Doctor Catheter figure?

The Gremlins are back, and this time they’ve taken control of a high-tech skyscraper in New York City! From the sequel movie Gremlins 2: New Batch, these two 7″ scale, fully articulated Gremlins figures (approximately 6″ tall) have taken up residence in a tattoo parlor and are ready to show off their new ink. They come with interchangeable hands, tattoo instrument, mallet, sunglasses, riding crop, plus fabric towel and jean vest. Window box packaging.

Sadly, Gremlins 2 was a bit of a box office flop. Ultimately it almost doubled its budget after the worldwide release, but the take from the US was $9m short of the film’s $50m budget. Oof. It’s nowhere as iconic as the original, but as a bit of a satire on the horror subgenre of creatures run amuck, it is clever.

What did you think of the second Gremlins film? Let us know below!

Finally, Your ‘Man Meat’ Can Smell Like Rey Skywalker.

0

Dr. Squatch is introducing its second collection of soaps based on Star Wars, and one of those scents is based on Rey.

Yes, the same Dr. Squatch that has spent years marketing its natural products to manly men who wanted their balls to smell good — presumably — so they got more action.

So now, finally, you can ‘marinate your man meat’ with Rey.

Or rather, Resistance Rinse, which is said to smell like “electric daisy.” As in Daisy Ridley? Who knows.

The scent is one of four new scents that has been introduced via a second Star Wars collection from the L.A. based hygiene product company.

From Happi

Resistance Rinse, inspired by the strong, delicate beauty of Rey Skywalker, contains the gentle exfoliation powers of electric daisy with a floral, aromatic and refreshing scent.

Legendary Lather, inspired by Luke Skywalker, features five finger grass imparting a breezy, grassy scent.

For those feeling invincible and wish to channel the tall, dark and handsome Kylo Ren, there is Suds of Darkness, which features exfoliating rhyolite for a deep cleanse and skin softener topped off with smoothing love lies bleeding oil, which suffuses a steamy, musky scent.

And while the character may come across as an old, rickety man, consumers will feel anything but when showering with Sinister Scrub, which is inspired by Emperor Palpatine. Packed with black currant, a raw fruit rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, bathers will relish the bar’s spicy aromas.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never wondered what Palpatine smelled like. I always thought Darth Vader smelled like “feet wrapped in leathery burnt bacon,” but I guess he just smells like “rejuvenating Chokeberry, exfoliating Sand and detoxifying Coconut Charcoal” according to Dr. Squatch.

It’s kind of ironic that a company that has built up a reputation for being, well, hyper masculine has chosen Rey as one of its new scents. It’s especially ironic given the conversation (i.e. online drama) surrounding Rey and the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy has often focused on how “toxic” male Star Wars fans can be.

And now you can scrub your balls with Rey in an officially licensed product.

As her grandfather used to say, it’s ironic.

Judge Dismisses Nirvana “Nevermind” Album Cover Lawsuit

Spencer Elden, the now-adult child model featured in his birthday suit on Nirvana’s 1991 album “Nevermind,” had his lawsuit against the grunge rock band dismissed by a California judge. This was his third attempt to bring the suit and he will not be allowed to file a fourth.

“Spencer Elden, age 31, claimed in his legal papers that the shot of him swimming towards a dollar bill on a fish hook amounted to child porn,” Deadline reports. “US District Judge Fernando Olguin of Los Angeles disagreed. He said Elden had waited far too long to take legal action against several record labels and the band’s drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic, guitarist Kurt Cobain’s estate and photographer Kirk Weddle.”

“We are pleased that this meritless case has been brought to a speedy final conclusion,” an attorney for Nirvana said in a statement to the press.

Elden’s lawyer Margaret Mabie told Rolling Stone magazine that they vowed to appeal the decision.

“Spencer intends to appeal this ruling. This ruling’s interpretation of the statute of limitations on Masha’s Law contravenes over fifteen years of well-settled precedent and the legislature’s intended purpose of the law,” she said. “Under this reading of the law, child pornography remedies vaporize once the victim in the contraband image turns 28 years old. Under this logic, any child pornography producer—such as Masha Allen’s original abuser—could simply wait out the clock and then re-distribute abusive material with impunity.”

Spencer began the lawsuits against Nirvana in August 2021, acquainting the album cover to “child pornography” and opining that it has caused his privacy to be violated. He has recreated the image many times for staged photos.

“Nevermind” was the second studio album from Nirvana and the first to feature Dave Grohl as their drummer. It also features the hit song “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a certified Platinum single. The cover was chosen among several photos that were sent to the band.

Prior to his death, Cobain said in an interview with ‘Musician’ magazine that the songs featured “some of my very personal experiences, like breaking up with girlfriends and having bad relationships, feeling that death void that the person in the song is feeling—very lonely, sick…”

The Dark Knight’s Last Stand Is The Next Dynamic 8ction Figure

Everyone appears to be making a Dark Knight Returns Armored Batman figure these days. Seriously. I’ve seen multiple versions of Batman’s last stand against Superman on the shelves over the past year. And here’s another one!

This time we’re departing from the standard retail world and jumping into the real collector’s market. Beast Kingdom is expanding the Dynamic 8action Heroes line with another Batman. This time, as he appeared in the climax of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Superheroes have been outlawed. Nuclear war is at hand. And Superman is the tool of a trigger-happy government. Only one man can stand up to the big blue boy scout, and that’s an aging Bruce Wayne in a high-tech suit of armor. Oh, and with a bit of help of a one-armed Green Arrow.

Batman will stand 21cm tall and comes with a healthy array of accessories, including the Kryptonite arrow. The jumpsuit and cape are made of fabric. Batman has three interchangeable heads: one helmet with light-up eyes, a damaged helmet, and an unmasked Bruce Wayne. The Armored Dark Knight is $113.99 direct from Beast Kingdom.

The DAH (Dynamic 8action Heroes) range is back with a bang with the release of the ‘Armored Batman’ from the Dark Knight Returns. The suit, which was built to protect an older Batman is a perfect fit for the DAH design of highly articulable action figures. Batman’s strong body is complimented by the modular-like armor that sits on top. The set includes three exclusive head sculpts, a full helmet, a partially damaged helmet, and a full Bruce Wayne head. Multiple replacement hands as well as a collection of weapons, including a pulse gun and special effects complete the set.

Batman will come with the following:

  • DAH design action figure, with around 20 points of articulation
  • One Bruce Wayne head sculpt (Usable with DAH-043, 044DX Batman)
  • Two (2) replaceable head sculpts with mask (Fully covered, damaged)
  • Three (3) pairs of replaceable hands (Fist, open, gripping)
  • Accessories: Palm shocker + special effects add-ons, special effects, bow + kryptonite gas effects
  •  Street lamp prop
  • Suit and cloak made of real cloth
  • Special, branded base with bracket

There’s no Frank Miller version of Superman yet to pair with Beast Kingdom’s Dark Knight, but I’m sure he’s on the way. In the meantime, you can pick up the company’s other versions of The Dark Knight and Robin by clicking here.

What do you think about this premium Armored Batman figure? Worth the money, or is it better off staying with the various McFarlane versions? Let us know in the comments section below.

Evercade EXP Crams 18 Capcom Games Into One Handheld

Evercade has just announced that its newest handheld console will come pre-loaded with 16 classic Capcom titles. It’s retro gaming on the go via a 4.3″ IPS screen. The Evercade EXP is WiFi enabled and has a battery that lasts between 4 to 5 hours. Not only will the handheld come with 16 games, but you can also take advantage of the Evercade’s expansive library of over 380 retro titles. This collection currently consists of 30+ cartridges from developers like Intellivision, Gaelco, Jaleco, Gremlin, Atari, and Data East, to name a few. So there’s no selection shortage if you’re a retro gaming fan.

The Evercade EXP will come with the following games pre-installed:

  • 1942 (Arcade version)
  • 1943 (Arcade version)
  • 1944 : The Loop Master (Arcade version)
  • Bionic Commando™ (Arcade version)
  • Captain Commando™ (Arcade version)
  • Commando™ (Arcade version)
  • Final Fight™ (Arcade version)
  • Forgotten Worlds™ (Arcade version)
  • Ghouls ‘n Ghosts™ (Arcade version)
  • Legendary Wings™ (Arcade version)
  • MERCS (Arcade version)
  • Street Fighter II’: Hyper Fighting (Arcade version)
  • Strider (Arcade version)
  • Vulgus™ (Arcade version)
  • Mega Man (8-bit)
  • Mega Man 2 (8-bit)
  • Mega Man X (16-bit)
  • Breath of Fire (16-bit)

Some of these games are vertical scrolling shooters, which usually means those titles are compressed on the screen. However, the EXP has something called “TATE mode.” This features “mode allows you to play classic vertical games the way they were meant to be played. Turn the Evercade EXP 90 degrees and play using the dedicated buttons. Perfect for arcade shooters like Toaplan’s Truxton, Capcom’s 1942, and classic games like Atari’s Centipede.

The Evercade is also capable of displaying these games on the big screen as well. The console has a mini HDMI port that allows you to play the Capcom titles on a TV at 720p. Then again, this should be expected for a device that will retail for $149.99 when it hits retailers on November 24th.

The Evercade EXP may be pricier than other options, but from what I’ve heard, the emulation of the games is pretty good. The bad thing is that the Evercade catalog has had better reception in the UK than in the US. I’ve not seen one of their products in a local retailer for over a year. Maybe this handheld will change that? What do you think? Let us know below.

New Duncan and Ram Man Statues Arrive From Eternia Next Year!

If you were looking for more statues to add to the upcoming He-Man diorama from Iron Studios, the company just announced two new characters: Man At Arms and Ram Man! However, if you’re a Masters of the Universe purist, you’ll be glad to know that these statues are based on the classic versions of the characters and not newer interpretations.

Yes, this Man At Arms is also based on the Filmation cartoon. He has that memorizing mustache. This may be one of the best looking statues of the character since the 200X days. Duncan’s uniform is a mix of classic fantasy elements mixed with science fiction. Who knew that an advanced civilization like that on Eternia would still feel the need to use loincloths?

He-Man’s mentor and friend is currently available for pre-order. This requires a $32 down payment, with the remaining original $159.99 balance due when the Art Scale statue ships. The expected arrival date is sometime during the second quarter of 2023.

Inventor, soldier, and father of Teela, Duncan, known for his title of Man-At-Arms is the official guard of Eternia’s royal family, combat instructor, and mentor adviser of Prince Adam. More than Adam’s friend, Duncan is a fatherly figure that acts as a second father for Eternia’s greatest hero, helping He-Man to lead his heroic warriors against the sorcerer Skeletor and his followers. In the animated series from 2002, he fought side-by-side with his brother Fisto and the at-the-time Captain Randor against the warlord Keldor (Skeletor) and his warriors, to defend Eternia, Castle Grayskull, and the Council of Elders. Trained by the renowned strategist Dekker, Duncan was invited by King Randor to strengthen his guard with an elite attack and defense force. One of the few characters that know that Adam is He-Man, Man-At-Arms is an inventor and scientist, responsible for the creation of the most efficient weapons, armor, and vehicles used by the royal guard.

Ram Man was always one of my favorite secondary characters outside the main cast. His toy had a great action feature, and his outfit always made him look somewhat like Marvel’s Juggernaut. Like Duncan, Ram Man is based on the Filmation version and Mattel toy. He, too, is priced at $159.99 and requires a $32 deposit. He’ll be out during the second quarter of next year as well. Ram Man is approximately 6.7″ tall.

Small in size, but with a big heart, and a friendly and kind personality, despite his brute appearance, Ram-Man, also known by his nickname Krass, is one of the most loyal allies of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. A fierce fighter when needed, his special skill is to propel himself forward, having extreme thrust force on his legs, knocking down opponents or obstacles with his super hard helmet like a real human battering ram. Although many times slow, innocent, and the protagonist of comic moments, Ram-Man plays a very important role in the fight against the evil forces of the sorcerer Skeletor and his minions. Fearless, as presented in the animated series from 2002, when he was just a boy, he got lost in the caves on Fertile Plains, staying for a long time in complete darkness, which caused him a traumatic fear of the dark as an adult, but while facing the Shadow Creatures in a fight under the cloak of darkness, Ram-Man acted bravely next to Eternia’s defenders even in the face of his greatest fear.
