The best thing about the 1990 sequel to Gremlins was when we were treated to a non-stop barrage of gags and in-jokes. One of those is when one Gremlin tattoos another (with a soldering iron somehow) with the WB shield. The scene only lasted a few seconds. The sequel had lost its horror movie edge, but it allowed the director to have some fun at the expense of Warner Brothers.
Now, this tiny bit of fourth-wall-breaking can be yours, thanks to NECA! The Tattoo Gremlins 2pk comes with both the tattoo artist and the tattooed creature. Like previous NECA figures from this franchise, the Gremlins stand 7″ tall and come with detailed accessories and softgoods clothing. Expect this package to arrive in January.
It was no secret that Joe Dante didn’t want to do a sequel to Gremlins, but you would never know it. While the first film isn’t self-referential, the sequel, The New Batch, pokes lots of fun at itself, the mythos, and Warner Bros. I mean, they break the fourth wall with a Hulk Hogan cameo after all. I’m glad that NECA is making figures based on some of these very short gags.
Now, when can we get a Christopher Lee as Doctor Catheter figure?
The Gremlins are back, and this time they’ve taken control of a high-tech skyscraper in New York City! From the sequel movie Gremlins 2: New Batch, these two 7″ scale, fully articulated Gremlins figures (approximately 6″ tall) have taken up residence in a tattoo parlor and are ready to show off their new ink. They come with interchangeable hands, tattoo instrument, mallet, sunglasses, riding crop, plus fabric towel and jean vest. Window box packaging.
Sadly, Gremlins 2 was a bit of a box office flop. Ultimately it almost doubled its budget after the worldwide release, but the take from the US was $9m short of the film’s $50m budget. Oof. It’s nowhere as iconic as the original, but as a bit of a satire on the horror subgenre of creatures run amuck, it is clever.
