Complete Sci-Fi Anime ‘Gunbuster’ OVA Is Coming To Blu-Ray

0

The six-part OVA sci-fi mech series ‘Gunbuster’ is getting a home video release in the form of a Blu-ray box set, courtesy of Discotek Media. It will include all six features, the original Japanese audio, and the English dub.

Debuting between 1988 and 1989, the series about battling aliens was created by Toshio Okada, directed by Hideaki Anno, and produced by Gainax.

The planned release date for the box set is April 25th, 2023, but it is available for pre-order on the Right Stuf Anime website.

You can watch the trailer below:

Gunbuster Wikia describes the synopsis as follows,

“The OVA details the story of Noriko Takaya, the daughter of famous space captain Yuzo Takaya, who died in the Luxion disaster of 2015. The story begins in 2021, with Noriko attending a school for aspiring space pilots and Earth threatened by an incoming invasion of Space Monsters. A new coach arrives, sees potential in Noriko, and chooses her to be a pilot in the Gunbuster project, despite her lack of piloting ability. Noriko and her senior, Kazumi Amano, board the Exelion and train to become the pilots of the first two Buster Machines. Upon entering space, it is made apparent that, every time they enter near-lightspeed travel, Time Dilation occurs, sending them into the future. As the series progresses, they continue the fight against the space monsters while the lives they knew on Earth slowly slip away.”

This will be its second Blu-ray release in North America. Previously, Bandai Entertainment USA had released a high-definition box set that had digitally remastered much of the sound and visuals.

‘Gunbuster’ got a brief revival with the release of the 2006 anime film ‘Gunbuster vs. Diebuster’ from Gainax. This was followed by a manga published by Kadokawa Shoten in 2010 for their Young Ace magazine.

D&D Movie Writers Love “Emasculating Leading Men.”

Variety recently interviewed the directing team behind Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Thanks to this, we now know that male characters are weak and the strong female characters are … strong female characters. Yay.

John Francis Daley shared directing duties with Jonathan Goldstein and was one of the three writers for the upcoming D&D feature film. During the interview, Daley was asked about Sophia Lillis (Doric) and Michelle Rodriguez (Holga) being on the frontlines in the battle scenes.

Daley responded that it wasn’t an attempt at “wokeness” but rather, “We liked that Holga is the bruiser that does the dirty work for Edgin [Chris Pine’s character], and he doesn’t like to get his hands dirty. We also love emasculating leading men.

It would make sense that a thief in the world of D&D would prefer to have a “heavy” do things he couldn’t. There’s a reason why bar owners would hire guys like me to be bouncers. We take on a job management doesn’t want to do and get paid for it. Simple enough, but because this is Hollywood, the heavies must be women, and the men must be lessened to prop them up.

Daley followed Goldstein’s backtrack claim that this was done “not for woke reasons” by giving examples like Spidey compared to Iron Man in the MCU. One is heroic and strong, while the other is “challenged and not simply heroic.

Daley appears to have forgotten that Tony Stark was challenged and not always heroic. Tony, on occasion, would allow his ego to get in the way of his heroism. The same can be said of Spider-Man in Homecoming.

Men do not have to be emasculated to be vulnerable. Perhaps John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein do not know what the word “emasculate” means. By definition, to emasculate someone means to either castrate them or weaken them. News flash, women don’t want weak men on screen or in reality.

Men have vulnerabilities that do not make them lesser people or rob them of masculinity. Daley and Goldstein’s views on what makes a man appear to be viewed through a distorted lens.

However, I will give Daley credit for acknowledging that constantly having male characters look foolish is a detriment to any film, “What we love about Chris is that he’s hyper-aware of that and wants to make himself look as bad as possible, almost to a fault. Sometimes we’re like, “All right, no, you have to be a hero in this moment.

The D&D film already had an uphill battle thanks to Hasbro’s OGL 1.1 fiasco, and the most recent trailer made it look like it was filled with second-rate MCU quips.

Hasbro To Re-Release Transformers’ Omega Supreme … Kinda

I have some good news if you missed out on Hasbro’s Omega Supreme figure from a few years ago. The Legacy Generations Select line is re-releasing the giant Autobot with a new name and color scheme.

We spotted the giant blue bot over at the Big Bad Toy Store for $199.99. Cast from the same molds as the War for Cybertron Omega Supreme, the “Guardian Robot” is your next best chance to get the 24″ tall titan Transformer. Unfortunately, it looks like very little has changed between Omega and Guardian. The small chest plate may be slightly different, but everything else appears to be just a palette swap.

The new paint job pays homage to the Guardian, who appeared in the second season of the G1 series. This time, however, the Guardian has his head. Guardian stands 24″ tall in robot mode but transforms into a colossal base/missile/roadway system.

Check out the videos below of the classic Omega Supreme and the Titan Series version:

During Transformers’ early days in the 1980s, only the rich kids got the original Omega Supreme. Since I was from a redneck town, that meant only one boy in a twenty-mile radius had it. But I won’t lie; the whole thing was incredible. Not U.S.S. FLAGG cool, but still.

Omega Supreme came out during the era when big toys were becoming the norm. It was the time of the Ghostbusters firehouse and the MASK base. It was a struggle to convince your parents that you totally had room for another massive action figure or base in your room.

What were some of your favorite large-scale Transformer figures? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hiya Toys Takes On ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ King Ghidorah

Hiya Toys returns to the American Godzilla universe with a brand-new action figure. From Godzilla: King of the Monsters comes the deadly King Ghidorah!

The King has a 22″ wingspan and stands about 20″ tall. Each of his three heads is attached to multi-segmented necks, allowing for a decent range of motion. Every head has a hinged jaw, and his lower limbs have multiple points of articulation. However, even the King needs a little help to stand upright. Hiya Toys includes two stands to help stabilize his wings.

King Ghidorah is currently listed as a pre-order figure priced at $90. The expected arrival of the golden three-headed dragon should be sometime in October of this year.

Hiya Toys also offers an excellent line of 2000 AD figures, including Judge Dredd. The company also specializes in another lawman: RoboCop!

Features accurate details to faithfully capture its on-screen appearance, even the different details of 3 head sculpts.Stands at 350mm tall, has 560mm wingspan. 3 Necks with 27 articulations and Wing with ten articulations allow to re-create different poses.

I recently got one of Hiya Toys’ Judge Dredd action figures. Although the toys are small, roughly 3.75″ or 1:8 scale, they pack a lot of detail and articulation. Dredd’s build is also pretty sturdy. I wasn’t afraid of any of his limbs breaking or coming loose when I was posing him.

The paint is also adequate for a small-scale toy. What you see in the pictures above is what you can expect from the final product. Their washes help define the small details, but everything could benefit from a light spray of dull coat to tone down the plastic’s shine.

The 2019 anime was based on a three-part 2015 novel series by the Japanese author Mado Nozaki that was published by Kodansha. The Tokyo-based animation studio Revoroot produced the animated series and Kiyotaka Suzuki directed it.

You can watch this clip from the English version below:

The Japanese voice actors Yūichi Nakamura as Zen Seizaki, Satsuki Yukino as Ai Magase, Takahiro Sakurai as Shinobu Kujiin, Kensho Ono as Atsuhiko Fumio, Kazuyuki Okitsu as Ariyoshi Hanta, Kenyuu Horiuchi as Yasutaka Morinaga, and Ryotaro Okiayu as Kaika Itsuki.

He investigates a pharmaceutical company promoting a defective drug following reports of falsified test results by university labs. During the investigation, Shin Inaba, an anesthetist is found dead and a bloodstained document is discovered, which includes hair and skin, covered with letter “F”. Seizaki’s investigation leads to a plot involving the mayoral elections and manipulation of the Shiniki population to embrace a new legislation legalizing suicide. Seizaki discovers that a sinister woman called Ai Magase appears to be behind the push to legalize suicide and is causing the deaths of all of those who oppose her.”

The novels got adapted into a manga from Kodansha that was released in 2019 through their Comic Days magazine.

007, Your Mission Is To Obtain This Scaled Golden Gun Replica

0

“To us, Mr. Bond. We are the best.”

During a seemingly casual dinner, Francisco Scaramanga can be seen placing several golden items on a table as he converses with James Bond. Little does the British spy know that these innocuous items can be combined to create a deadly weapon that fires just one bullet. Thanks to Factory Entertainment, you can now own a scaled-down replica of Scaramanga’s famed Golden Gun.

The 6″ long replica is not modular. Instead, it is cast out of solid metal and comes in one piece. Thankfully, this keeps the cost relatively low at only $79.99. This piece is available right now.

Factory Entertainment has been introducing several scaled replicas over the past couple of years, making owning a collection of props a bit more affordable. Previously, we covered the release of Batman’s grapnel gun and the Sword of Omens from ThunderCats. The average size of these is shrunken to about 6″ in length and priced at less than $100 each.

The Golden Gun appeared in the 1974 Roger Moore 007 film The Man with the Golden Gun. The prop has gone on to become one of the James Bond franchise’s most famous weapons. It was a one-hit-kill firearm in the N64 classic Golden Eye.

Over the years, various replicas of the Golden Gun have popped up, with Factory Entertainment previously producing a 1:1 scale modular version, which was pretty expensive. Around $800 when it was first introduced, but it has climbed much higher on the secondary market.

In the film, Francisco Scaramanga (Christopher Lee) is an assassin who uses the famed golden firearm. It was assembled from four inconspicuous pieces: a cigarette lighter, cigarette case, cufflink, and fountain pen. It’s an impressive-looking piece, looking almost realistically functional.

New ReAction Figures: Simpsons Treehouse of Horror & Threat Level Midnight!

Super7 announced more ReAction Figures this week! The very first wave of The Office figures kicks off with Threat Level Midnight characters. Meanwhile, The Simpson’s third wave is about classic Treehouse of Horror characters and gags.

It’s an interesting choice to start The Office series of 3.75″ retro-styled figures with Michael Scott’s questionable use of company funds. But then again, it’s a great way to get hardcore fans of the show to throw $120 down for the whole set. Hopefully, Wave 2 will include all of Michael’s various characters, like Willy Wonka and Prison Mike.

Wave 1 of The Office will have six characters from Threat Level Midnight. Yes, even Toby makes an appearance:

Each figure comes with an accessory, such as a gun, a serving tray, or a hockey stick. Toby’s Hostage #4 comes with nothing because that’s what he deserves.

The Simpsons have returned with another wave of ReAction figures, this time tackling Springfield residents from the series’ better days long ago. Wave 3’s Treehouse of Horror characters include:

As usual, the ReAction figures are $20 each. There are no pre-orders; they’re available now.

Inside-Out Bart comes with a cane and hat. Skeleton Marge doesn’t come with an accessory unless you count Snowball II inside her rib cage. Finally, the Homer Reaper has a scythe and victim scroll. Kang has a Bob Dole mask.

I’m surprised that Dole was included. It makes me wonder what other celebrities or politicians will be included in future waves.

What was your favorite Treehouse of Horror episode? Let us know in the comments section below.

Netflix Drops Teaser For Stop-Motion Series ‘Pokémon Concierge’

The Pokémon Company and Netflix are working together to develop a new stop-motion called ‘Pokémon Concierge’ which will follow a worker at a resort developed for Pokémon.

“In celebration of Pokémon Day, Netflix today announced Pokémon Concierge, its first collaborative production with The Pokémon Company and an ambitious stop-motion project produced by critically acclaimed dwarf studios,” Netflix said in a statement. “Expanding the Pokémon world, the story follows Haru, a concierge at the ‘Pokémon Resort,’ and her interactions with Pokémon and their owners who visit as guests.”

The released teaser trailer features a beach where the telepathic Psyduck walks onto the scene, leaving footprints in the sand. The concierge approaches and they look into the sky.

Vice President of Netflix Content in Asia Minyoung Kim expressed her excitement for the project.

“Netflix is looking forward to delighting fans in Japan and around the world with ‘Pokémon Concierge,’ an entirely new visual and storytelling experience featuring ground-breaking stop-motion animation set in the Pokémon world in close collaboration with The Pokémon Company,” she said. “We’re also excited to reveal this new series on Pokémon Day and provide fans with even more things to look forward to on this special holiday celebrating the popular franchise.”

You can watch the trailer below:

Pokémon seems to spread out as a franchise with various shows being shown on different platforms.

As the What’s On Netflix website notes, “Pokémon remains one of the most fragmented IPs in the United States. While Netflix is the exclusive home to newer seasons, much of the older shows and movies are either spread out or unavailable via a streaming service.”

“For example, Pokémon the Series: XY is only on Hulu whereas some of the movies are only available on Prime Video,” they added.

Netflix has previously streamed ‘Pokémon Journeys’ and ‘Pokémon Master Journeys’ as original series.
