Complete Sci-Fi Anime ‘Gunbuster’ OVA Is Coming To Blu-Ray

The six-part OVA sci-fi mech series ‘Gunbuster’ is getting a home video release in the form of a Blu-ray box set, courtesy of Discotek Media. It will include all six features, the original Japanese audio, and the English dub.

Debuting between 1988 and 1989, the series about battling aliens was created by Toshio Okada, directed by Hideaki Anno, and produced by Gainax.

The planned release date for the box set is April 25th, 2023, but it is available for pre-order on the Right Stuf Anime website.

You can watch the trailer below:

Gunbuster Wikia describes the synopsis as follows,

“The OVA details the story of Noriko Takaya, the daughter of famous space captain Yuzo Takaya, who died in the Luxion disaster of 2015. The story begins in 2021, with Noriko attending a school for aspiring space pilots and Earth threatened by an incoming invasion of Space Monsters. A new coach arrives, sees potential in Noriko, and chooses her to be a pilot in the Gunbuster project, despite her lack of piloting ability. Noriko and her senior, Kazumi Amano, board the Exelion and train to become the pilots of the first two Buster Machines. Upon entering space, it is made apparent that, every time they enter near-lightspeed travel, Time Dilation occurs, sending them into the future. As the series progresses, they continue the fight against the space monsters while the lives they knew on Earth slowly slip away.”

This will be its second Blu-ray release in North America. Previously, Bandai Entertainment USA had released a high-definition box set that had digitally remastered much of the sound and visuals.

‘Gunbuster’ got a brief revival with the release of the 2006 anime film ‘Gunbuster vs. Diebuster’ from Gainax. This was followed by a manga published by Kadokawa Shoten in 2010 for their Young Ace magazine.
