The Witcher Netflix Medallions – Toss A Coin for These Items?

The Witcher series on Netflix has garnered many opinions from fans of the books and games. Over the course of three seasons on the streaming platform, many have been critical of the show, citing many changes from the source material and other issues. But while The Witcher series has been divisive among the fan base, collectibles based on the series haven’t received negative attention. One of the things fans of the series can pick up are medallions based on the characters from the show. More specifically, Witcher medallions featuring the icons for each of the main three cast members in the show. But are The Witcher medallions for Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer from the Netflix series worth adding to your collection?

Something to note, the only character in the Netflix series, and in the source material, from the core group to have a medallion is Geralt of Rivia himself. He receives his Witcher medallion from Vesimir when training to become a Witcher many years before meeting Yennefer or Ciri. So while the White Wolf medallion in this set is a replica of Geralt’s medallion in the show, the other two are not. They’re novelty collectibles that are based on the show logo. This means the White Wolf, swallow, and shooting star that appears on the title screen each gets their own medallion in the set to collect.

Are the medallions at least made very well? Surprisingly enough, each medallion has some weight to it and comes with a long 30-inch chain. The medallions can be worn like a piece of jewelry or as part of a cosplay outfit, or they can be displayed on a shelf. Each medallion comes in its own wooden box with glass and foam, allowing you to store and display them on a shelf. Within the box are extra hinges for the wooden box that you can use to replace the ones already attached, just in case they break or appear damaged. The wood box also has a quick lock to use when closing the box, keeping the medallion and everything else inside safely, provided you don’t drop or hurl it against a wall.

As far as the quality of the designs on the medallions themselves, some are better looking than others. The Netflix series version of the Witcher medallion is mostly solid with a partial cutout on the negative space of the image, still enclosed by the circle of the medallion. For Geralt’s version, the back of the White Wolf’s hair is where the cutout portion is, while Ciri’s and Yennefer’s versions are larger with the negative space. Despite this, each medallion is the same size of 2 inches (5cm) in diameter. The metal is light enough to hold without any issues but still has enough weight to hang and pull the chain down when wearing it.

Geralt’s medallion is the most accurate to the one seen on the show, being the same design as Henry Cavill’s medallion and the logo of the show. Ciri and Yennefer’s designs are much different because they aren’t based on anything we see on the show and are just the same as the logo. Luckily, their designs fit well within the diameter of the medallion without being warped or looking shrunk down to fit. As for which of the three designs is better, it’s hard to say. All three medallions are built the same and feel like the same level of quality.

However, most people will gravitate towards the White Wolf version because it’s what Henry Cavill wears as Geralt of Rivia on the show. The other two medallions just don’t have the same type of resonance with fans, because they aren’t really based on anything in the show’s universe. They aren’t bad designs nor are they inferior medallions in any one specific way. But more often than not, most viewers of the Netflix show or fans of The Witcher universe will want Geralt’s White Wolf medallion before anything else.

But are these medallions still good as collectibles for someone who just loves to own everything related to The Witcher universe? Yes, but mostly for displaying somewhere. Wearing the medallions works out well, but only if you don’t mind the longer chain. The one issue all three medallions have is the inability to disconnect them from the chain included, which doesn’t allow you to swap out for a shorter chain if needed. Unfortunately, you cannot do so without breaking any link from the medallion to the chain, which may or may not be worth it to most people. But as a display piece on a mantle or desk, the wooden boxes these medallions come in work out well. The glass lets you view the medallion while it’s stored and they’re small enough to pick up at one’s convenience.

Most collectors of Witcher stuff might not find these medallions to be must-own items, especially if you weren’t a fan of the Netflix series. But if you like gathering anything related to The Witcher universe, these medallions are a nice thing to have. They feel like they’re good quality and can be worn or displayed as needed, with the minor inconvenience of the longer chain being connected to the medallions. If you’re feeling up to it and want to treat yourself, toss a coin to your witcher and pick up all three for the full set.

What do you think of these medallions based on The Witcher Netflix series? Would you add any of these to your own collection? Tell us your thoughts about it in the comment section down below!

Review: Gran Turismo – The Heart of Racing

Among the various PlayStation franchises that gamers have loved playing over the years, Gran Turismo is one of the biggest. The video game series focuses on professional racing and the feeling of getting behind the wheel of a car, with a big emphasis on the realism of driving any car. For some, it’s one of the best driving game series ever made because of that. So how do you make a feature-length movie about something like that? That’s where the Gran Turismo movie gets very clever about it. It’s a movie that takes the concept of the game and blends it together with a story that gets into the heart of driving as a professional racer.

Gran Turismo is based on the true events of a young kid who loved playing the Gran Turismo video game and went on to become a professional race car driver on the international circuit. While there are some exaggerations of the real-life events of Jann Mardenborough, the core ideas from the game complement emotion of the drama. Jann Mardenborough is a young man who joins a Gran Turismo video game competition, hosted by PlayStation and sponsored by Nissan. The grand prize is the chance to join a race camp and be chosen for a sponsorship deal to become a real racecar driver, traveling the world and competing in races under the Nissan brand. When Jann moves ahead and joins the racing world, the competition is much more than he realized, with the consequences of failing on the track being much harsher than failing in the game.

What makes Gran Turismo successful is how it not only has a reverence for the game it’s based on, but it finds interesting ways to highlight aspects of racing that are a big part of the games themselves. And yet it doesn’t go too far to become too complicated or cheesy to lose out on why the deeper parts of racing are so appealing. When Jann is set to compete online in Gran Turismo to join the race camp, the movie doesn’t go too far in showing that fans of the game are completely detached from the reality of racing real cars. Everyone is a fan of racing, even though they come from very different worlds. The big portions of the film emotionally are when multiple people try to find common ground through their love for racing despite the friction of one side believing the others don’t know enough about it.

The races themselves are a real treat to watch, even if you aren’t a fan of racing as a sport. The drama between drivers keeps things moving at a good pace, with a lot of great shots in and outside of the cockpit. The sense of speed and power that every vehicle has is made very apparent, especially when things go awry and trouble shows up for everyone. A lot of the action done with racecars was done with the real-life Jann Mardenborough as a stunt driver, so how Jan’s car moves in the movie is as close as possible to how things may have gone in real life. It adds an extra layer of heart and authenticity that feels right for fans of the games and fans of racing.

Although most of the cast recedes into the background, the few standouts in Gran Turismo are Archie Madekwe and David Harbour, who play Jann Mardenborough and Jack Salter respectively. The interactions the two of them have after meeting are great, with a lot of witty dialogue and emotional moments that play off great from one another.

Archie Madekwe plays a very lighthearted and borderline naïve Jann, who eventually grows tougher to the realities of racing when he goes pro. There’s a lot of good range of reactions and emotions from him that feel heartfelt, in both good and bad times during the film. David Harbour is the jaded, old-time driver who trains Jann with a harsh tone, but lightens up as things start to get better for Jan and Nissan.

Speaking of which, Orlando Bloom plays Danny Moore, the marketing executive that comes up with the competition for Nissan. Orlando’s character is based on the real-life GT Academy founder Darren Cox and is more present towards the beginning of the film than in the latter half. Orlando Bloom’s performance is good and has some funny moments here and there, but it’s not his performance that slows things down a bit. The conversations he has with Jann and Jack do get heavy when the stakes become severe, but it never feels as if things get super dire or critical throughout the movie. Nissan has a lot invested in Jann’s success throughout the story, but the pressure doesn’t always feel like it’s as mounted as they talk about in the movie. There are millions of dollars and reputations at stake for Danny, Jack, and Jann when they reach the pro circuit, so it feels like everyone should be a bit more stressed.

The only part of Gran Turismo that will make fans raise their eyebrows in confusion is a small scene where Jan and his friends are driving away from a police car. Gran Turismo was never a racing series that got into territory about street racing or evading the cops. That was something that games like Need for Speed or Midnight Club would explore more often.

So when Jann is driving away from the police and the movie displays a “Police Evaded” message as they’re laughing, it feels very out of place. Although it’s a funny moment that is added for drama, it’s also the only part where the movie goes a little too far and is unsuccessful. Most will be able to ignore it and move on, but it definitely stands out enough to be an issue.

Opposite of that, however, the movie has some great CGI effects that pay homage to the Gran Turismo games. When Jann is playing in his room and things go through a transformation into being on the track, it looks great. This plays up the theme of Gran Turismo feeling as if you’re getting behind the wheel of a real car, which is reinforced and revisited multiple times throughout the whole movie. There’s a full-circle moment where Jann ends up racing on one of the main tracks in his Gran Turismo game, where a similar version of the scene earlier plays out, but with a different context. For fans of the games, it will look very cool.

Gran Turismo has a lot of heart put into it. There’s a very real love for the PlayStation games and the sport of racing that is on full display. As a movie based on a video game property, this is a very different approach to adapting what people love about the games they play. It’s not a universe based on the content of the games but rather a story that takes the essence of the games and shows it in a way that anyone can get invested in. Even those who have never played a Gran Turismo game before, or know anything about racing, will find themselves enjoying what the Gran Turismo movie brings to the table.

What do you think about the Gran Turismo movie? Are you a fan of racing or have you played any of the Gran Turismo games before? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comment section!

Super7 Finally Gets SilverHawks Ultimates Right … Four Waves In

Aside from the normal gripes, one of the biggest criticisms of Super7’s SilverHawks figures was that the heroes’ armor was a dull shade of silver rather than shiny like the classic toys and cartoons. After multiple waves, Super7 is finally addressing this problem.

Wave 4 is a rehash of previously released figures with some improvements and changes. All four figures in this release are called the “Toy Version.” Yes, we’re getting recolors of Steelheart, Buzz-Saw, Mon*Star, and Quicksilver that mirror the color palettes of the 1980s toys.

Including the vac-metal finish on Steelheart and Quicksilver means they’re $10 more expensive than usual. The Ultimates figures are now $65. Even though Buzz-Saw is a repaint and lacks the chrome finish, he is also $65. Meanwhile, Mon*Star is the same price he was previously: $85.

If you purchase the Wave 4 bundle, you’ll get a bonus Super Pack that contains alternate heads for each of the four figures. These variants capture the limited colors found in LJN’s 1987 toy line.

Super7 added a tiny disclaimer regarding the new finish found on the SilverHawks:

Please Note: Due to the fragile nature of the vac-metal finish, this figure should be handled with care and posed delicately to avoid chipping or cracking.

This is a real concern given the issues we’ve encountered with the paint on other Super7 figures.

Kelvin Timeline ‘Star Trek’ Figures Coming From Hiya Toys

Remember when Paramount rebooted Star Trek with a series geared toward a much younger generation? Remember how that spiraled into terrible, angsty fan-fiction TV shows featuring Klingon intercourse and political commentary as subtle as a kick to the crotch? Me, too! Now you can relive how it all began with Hiya Toys’ Kelvin Timeline action figures!

For $24.99 each, you can own J. J. Abrams’s versions of Captain James T. Kirk and Doctor Leonard McCoy. The duo measure 3.75″ tall, the same scale as the Judge Dredd figures we’d previously covered.

Although Kirk and Bones are small, they feature similar articulation found in Hasbro’s Star Wars Vintage Collection figures. From my experience with figures from this company, They’re great display pieces but come off as a little too fragile to be taken out of the packaging. Thankfully, their packaging makes them look great on the shelf.

The two Starfleet legends will be released during the first quarter of 2024. They can be pre-ordered directly from Hiya Toys.

This brand-new James T. Kirk action figure stands at 105mm tall and faithfully reproduces his appearance from Star Trek 2009. He is dressed in the iconic yellow uniform representing command and strategic personnel. The Starfleet emblem on his clothes, communicator, phaser pistol, and other accessories are all finely detailed, capturing the essence of his character even at the 1/18 scale.

This brand-new Dr. McCoy action figure stands at 105mm tall and faithfully reproduces his appearance from Star Trek 2009. He is dressed in the iconic blue uniform representing medical and science personnel. The Starfleet emblem on his clothes, the meticulously crafted two medicine bottles, and medical equipment accessories are all finely detailed, capturing the essence of his character even at the 1/18 scale.

Kirk will have the following accessories:

  • Phaser
  • Communicator
  • Star Trek logo base
  • (2) interchangeable hands

Likewise, Bones comes with character-specific parts:

  • (2) medicine bottles
  • Interchangeable hands
  • Medical pouch
  • Medical Tricorder
  • Star Trek logo base

Honestly, I don’t have an issue with how either of these characters was portrayed in the trilogy. The stories they were thrust into sucked, not to mention the whitewashing / total character overhaul of Khan Noonien Singh.

$75 Monthly ISP FCC Subsidies Coming To Low Income Areas

0

The FCC is expanding the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) to provide $75 monthly subsidies to low-income areas. The money is designed to provide internet access for those who could not otherwise afford it.

Thanks to Ars Technica, we learned about the new benefits that are being added to the two-year-old program. Initially, the ACP provided “eligible” households with $30 stipends and $75 to “households on qualifying Tribal lands.

The FCC adopted the update on August 3rd, wherein the order will do the following:

  • Adopts rules to implement the up-to-$75 monthly ACP benefit in high-cost areas, as defined by NTIA and as required by the Infrastructure Act.
  • Defines “particularized economic hardship” and establishes the showing that ACP providers must make to demonstrate they are experiencing a particularized economic hardship in a high-cost area.
  • Sets the processes for reviewing and making determinations on providers’ economic hardship submissions, and appealing those determinations.
  • Creates a requirement for providers that are approved to offer the high-cost area benefit to annually resubmit an economic hardship showing to continue offering the high-cost area benefit.
  • Outlines the steps providers must take to provide advance notice and a transition path for ACP consumers if the provider no longer qualifies to offer the high-cost area benefit.

Currently, the ACP’s original prerequisite does not appear to have changed. To be eligible for the monthly discount, households not on Tribal lands will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year;
  • Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating provider’s existing low-income internet program;
  • Participates in one of these assistance programs:
    • Free and Reduced-Price School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program, including at U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Eligibility Provision schools.
    • SNAP
    • Medicaid
    • Federal Housing Assistance, including:
      • Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program (Section 8 Vouchers)
      • Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)/Section 202/ Section 811
      • Public Housing
      • Affordable Housing Programs for American Indians, Alaska Natives or Native Hawaiians
    • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
    • WIC
    • Veterans Pension or Survivor Benefits

Cortana Is Being Shut Down By Microsoft

0

We knew Cortana’s days were numbered as soon as Microsoft announced that ChatGPT was being incorporated into Bing. Then again, did anyone remember that the virtual assistant was built into the last two generations of the Windows operating systems?

News that Microsoft did not widely publicize Cortana’s impending doom. Even the assistant’s official webpage doesn’t tell users the news. No, her fate is hidden away on a support page.

August marks the end of Cortana as far as a standalone application. However, the productivity assistant will still live on, for now, in Microsoft Teams and the mobile version of Outlook.

Microsoft isn’t leaving users out in the cold, though:

We know that this change may affect some of the ways you work in Windows, so we want to help you transition smoothly to the new options. Instead of clicking the Cortana icon and launching the app to begin using voice, now you can use voice and satisfy your productivity needs through different tools.

The alternatives Microsoft suggests you use in Cortana’s absence are Voice Access, AI-powered Bing, and 365 Copilot. Weird that MS would ditch the virtual assistant and ask users to use multiple programs.

If you have never used Cortana (which wouldn’t surprise me), here are some of the tasks she could do for you:

  • Manage your calendar and keep your schedule up to date
  • Join a meeting in Microsoft Teams or find out who your next meeting is with
  • Create and manage lists
  • Set reminders and alarms
  • Find facts, definitions, and info
  • Open apps on your computer

I honestly cannot recall ever meeting anyone who used these tools. Had MS gone all out and given the app an on-screen presence like the Halo counterpart, it would have gone a long way. Well, it would have at least been a novelty like all those desktop assistants from the 1990s. Oh, how we miss Bonzi Buddy.
