Review: G.I. Joe Classified Series Shipwreck

Although Hasbro has announced that windowed packaging will be returning sometime within the next year, it’s too late to save some of the G.I. Joe Classified Series figures from the windowless fate. One such figure is Shipwreck, which we found in the wild this week.

So, is Hasbro hiding cost-cutting measures from customers who can’t view the figures before buying them? Let’s take a look at G.I. Joe Classified Series Shipwreck and see.

We first noticed the lackluster paint application on Shipwreck’s clothing. There’s zero paint in the areas where his biceps meet his shirt sleeves, leaving the shirt itself flesh-colored. When rotating the bicep swivel, more of the flesh-tone plastic is visible. There are also noticeable paint chips on his other sleeve.

For whatever reason, Hasbro didn’t bother to put a dull coat on Shipwreck’s shirt, so it’s gleaming. I had to move the lights in my studio because the plastic was coming off too reflective in the pictures. Compare that to Destro’s clothing. The only parts on him that are shiny are those bits that are meant to be metallic. Even the Tiger Force Bazooka, with his white jersey, isn’t as reflective.

As we mentioned in the D-Rezzed Podcast, Hasbro is cutting corners and hiding behind the “plastic-free” packaging veil. Oh, and they want you to know that these boxes are light on plastic because the proclamation is printed in giant letters on the front of the packaging. That’s what I want to see when displaying this thing with my other G.I. Joe Classified figures.

Another cheap move is including swappable hair rather than multiple heads. On paper, this sounds like an OK idea, but in execution, it’s terrible. Both the hat and hairpiece are not snuggly plugged into Shipwreck’s head. This results in him losing his wig every time he is moved. Said engineering inadequacy could result in losing the critical accessory quite quickly.

The best aspects of Shipwreck are its accessories. Polly may need a little fine-tuning regarding paint application, but the parrot does plug into Shipwreck’s wrist. However, the sailor’s pet cannot sit on his should unless you use the rope bandolier.

His sidearms are also nicely detailed, with his smaller black pistol showing an intricate rope and anchor design that I’d suggest painting silver so it shows up better. Or, if you don’t want to mess around with paint, use a welder’s pencil.

The grappling hook is a bit too soft and pliable for my liking. It can be easily warped and was originally somewhat flattened when I took it out of the footlocker.

An unintended accessory comes from paper ties used to secure the figure inside the packaging. The ties’ width and length are perfect for the grappling hook.

It’s sad when the best aspects of a $20+ action figure are a few small accessories. I cannot recommend that G.I. Joe Classified Series collectors spend money on this figure until Hasbro fixes the quality control issues and bring back display-friendly packaging.

If you’re a fan of Shipwreck and want to pick the figure up regardless of Hasbro’s dubious quality, he’s currently $21.88 if ordered from Walmart.

Elon Musk Wants Fight With Mark Zuckerberg To Stream On X

0

The often talked about, but not yet official, cage match between social media giants Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg may happen, but where can we see it? If you believe Musk, it will be streamed on X, with the proceeds going to charity. However, the guy behind the boomer catnip website Facebook has a different idea.

According to the Associated Press (via Orlando Sentinel), In response to Musk’s desire to stream the bout on the platformer formerly known as Twitter, Zuckerberg said, “Shouldn’t we use a more reliable platform that can actually raise money for charity?” Ironically, the Meta CEO allegedly posted this on Threads, a website that saw more than 50% of its user base vanish since launching in July.

Regardless of which platform the less-than-likely duel airs, it would be interesting to watch a man who needs $14M a year in personal security get smacked around by Musk. Even then, what will this prove in the end?

Neither man is known for their physical prowess and in-ring fighting skill. Zuckerberg may be trained in jiu-jitsu, but that hardly makes you a capable fighter when pitted against another opponent.

Would this match be that popular? Regarding general audiences who watch celebrity boxing matches, Musk and Zuckerberg are pretty niche. It would be like someone telling me about the William Haynes vs. Chris Ray Gun bout. Most people out there would probably respond with, “Who?

Come to think of it; the whole celebrity boxing genre has been replaced with somewhat forgettable YouTubers having (often) less-than-thrilling tapfests with each other. What I’d like to see is Logan Paul have to fight someone who lost their money on his CryptoZoo fiasco. That would be an event.

Which famous people would you like to see beat each other up in the ring? Let us know below.

Streamer Kai Cenat Arrested After Chaotic Giveaway in NYC

Social media influencers can attract a large crowd when they announce a fan meetup, for better or worse. The notoriety of content creators and streamers has grown exponentially in recent years, allowing some creators to garner the attention of thousands of people. Often when they host fan meetups in various locations, their followers can crowd up an area just to catch a glimpse of their favorite creator. And sometimes, things can go very wrong for everyone involved, especially if they handled everything poorly.

Popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat was arrested at the start of the weekend on Friday after a game console giveaway and meet-up with his fans went horribly wrong. The streamer made a post on his social media accounts to his nearly 6.5 million followers to meet at Union Square Park in New York City. Kai told his followers he planned a big giveaway to those who showed up, including items like a PlayStation and other expensive tech accessories. While things started off fairly calm when people began to gather in the park around 3 pm EST, but eventually everything gradually went off the rails.

Kai was taken into custody as the giveaway turned chaotic, with people in the area beginning to fight and commit acts of violence towards police officers in the streets. The crowd became incredibly violent and went as far as to break into a nearby construction site and began picking up items to use as weapons. Eventually, NYPD police were able to remove Kai Cenat from the area, citing safety concerns, and activate a Level 4 response, which is one of the highest disaster responses for the department in the event of a disaster.

NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey spoke during two conferences on Friday with the media after the event. “We went from 300 kids to a couple of thousands of kids in minutes… individuals in the park began to commit acts of violence towards the police and the public…You had people walking around with shovels, axes, and other tools from the construction. Individuals were also lighting fireworks, throwing them toward the police, they were throwing them toward each other… Young people destroyed our vehicles. My car is destroyed. They destroyed food carts. They destroyed stores…”

According to reports shared with various media outlets from the NYPD, three officers were injured in the event. At the same time, over 60 people were arrested, with 30 being juveniles according to the New York City Police Department. Due to the severity of everything, Kai Cenat is being charged with unlawful assembly and two counts of inciting a riot.

Other charges are also said to possibly be brought up against Kai as well. The streamer could be facing multiple years in jail if found guilty. A representative for Kai Cenat from AMP Group put out a statement to CNN regarding the situation. “Members of AMP hoped to create a positive experience for fans and give back as a show of appreciation for their support… We’ve hosted fan meet-ups and video shoots in the past, but we’ve never experienced anything at the scale of what took place yesterday.”

What do you think of the situation with Kai Cenat? Was his planned giveaway in NYC handled irresponsibly? Who should be held responsible for what happened in Union Square? Share your thoughts about everything in the comments below!

Review: Twisted Metal Season 1 – Driving Crazy

Any fan of PlayStation games will tell you of how over-the-top a series like Twisted Metal could be. Vehicular combat on an intense scale with explosions is in the DNA of the games, along with an element of craziness that walks the line between dark humor and absolute insanity. The first season of the Twisted Metal series that is streaming on Peacock has all the right parts that highlight all of these aspects. In that way, the series is a good adaptation of the games. Unfortunately, the story of the series can lose track of what makes Twisted Metal so appealing to fans, causing the series to go off track and feel like a completely different series. But when Twisted Metal shifts back to what viewers are here for, it hits a sweet spot that makes it a fun series to watch.

The plot of Twisted Metal follows a man who has forgotten his real name, opting to refer to himself as John Doe. John is a milkman, someone who drives the harsh roads delivering items between cities in this post-nuclear fallout world. John is hired for a job to pick up and deliver a package for Raven, a woman who runs the city of New San Francisco, offers to let John start a new life within the city walls instead of living on the outside, but only if he can complete the job within ten days. As John drives from one part of the nation to the other, he encounters many crazy people trying to survive on the open road, including a mysterious woman named Quiet. Things only get crazier as John makes his way to his destination, while vicious and crazy rivals like the infamous Sweet Tooth lurk dangerously close behind.

The best parts of Twisted Metal are the action scenes, with awesome car combat sequences that feel ripped right out of the game. However, the series strangely only has so many of these sequences throughout the first season, with is around ten episodes. Often the fights are limited to shootouts between people, which are still good but not on the same level as the car chases and battles. Twisted Metal as a series is all about vehicular combat, it’s a major part of the plot and the universe as a whole. So it’s a shame to see that aspect of it not dominate most of the series’ action in a significant way. But when things amp up and people get into their cars for battle, the show is at its best.

The dark humor of the games is here as well, but often can feel awkward in some spots. Many of the characters we meet are crazy in their own ways, with some being crazier than others. The dialogue is often very edgy with everyone who talks, but there’s always a looming dark overtone that tries to make things feel direr in the show. At the same time, things can get very grotesque in this world, which fits with the tone of the games that inspired the show.

Although much of that comes from things outside of car combat, which may or may not rub some fans the wrong way. Luckily, a lot of the humor is self-aware of how exaggerated things can be and the show fully commits to it. In most cases, it’s successful, while in others it’s not as funny as it wants you to believe.

Anthony Mackie plays John Doe, while Stephanie Beatriz plays the role of Quiet. The two of them have a gradual partnership that grows over time throughout the season, with a lot of humorous moments. Their relationship changes as you get deeper into the season, but the two of them have a lot of great banter that can be funny.

But what about every other character, do we see a lot of faces from the games? There are a lot of name drops and appearances of characters from multiple games, ranging from the first Twisted Metal to Twisted Metal: Black. Some characters in the show are deep cuts from the games that have a significant role in this series. If you’ve played enough Twisted Metal, then you’ll be able to spot many bits of fan service from the casting, even though a number of them only show up for a brief time.

The biggest inclusion in the series is the appearance of Sweet Tooth, who is often viewed as the mascot for the Twisted Metal games. Sweet Tooth is played by two actors in the series, with the movements being done by wrestler Samoa Joe and the voice by Will Arnett. Sweet Tooth is a weird character with a pretty brutal backstory that is very dark, although the origin we get from the series is different from the games. There have been multiple versions of Sweet Tooth’s background, but this series depicts a Sweet Tooth who was once a child star that went crazy and was sent to an insane asylum.

On-screen, he looks terrifying and amazing, especially when he starts fighting. Will Arnett’s voice and Samoa Joe’s movement really make the character come to life, with a presence on screen that is far more potent than any other character in the show. For some, the jokes and dialogue in some places might come off as weird and unfunny, but it fits in line with the way Sweet Tooth has appeared over the years in various games.

Twisted Metal is a decently good adaptation of the games it is based on, with a few things that work and don’t work in its favor. Most fans will be disappointed that the story doesn’t get into the infamous tournament that is in the games, opting to set that up in a few ways for a Season 2 of the show. At the same time, fans will also be annoyed at the low number of car combat sequences throughout the season, even though the ones in it are pretty good. Most viewers who aren’t fans of the games won’t think much of the show, especially if dark and twisted humor isn’t your thing. But if you know even a vague amount about the games and just want something wild to watch, you won’t find Twisted Metal to be a bad series. Hopefully, if there is a second season, more car combat will be injected into it. What’s here is a good start, but can hopefully turn into something better.

What do you think of the Twisted Metal series on Peacock? Are you a fan of the PlayStation games that the show is based on? Are you going to watch Twisted Metal yourself? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!

EXO-6 Announces Klingon Commander Kruge Figure!

Commander Kruge was the first major Klingon threat in Star Trek’s motion picture saga. Even more surprising than the newish look the Klingons were sporting in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was that Christopher Lloyd was playing the leader of the hostile clan. It was a massive departure from his role as Reverend Jim Ignatowski on Taxi at that time.

EXO-6 has not only managed to capture Lloyd’s look in the film but also the delicate details found in Commander Kruge’s uniform. Even EXO-6 has declared that this figure represents the “most complex and layered replica” it has ever created.

For $295, I’d sure hope that this 12″ tall Klingon is as premium as a collectible can get. That is, after all, up in the price range of most Hot Toys figures.

EXO-6 is taking pre-orders for Klingon Commander Kruge until August 31st. However, the estimated shipping window for the figure is not until the second quarter of 2024.

This 1:6-scale figure of Kruge is the most complex and layered replica that EXO-6 has created to date. Kruge and his crew were the first characters to display this  Klingon design that set the standard for all Klingons from Star Trek: The Next Generation through Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Designed by award-winning costume designer Robert Fletcher, this costume was reused in The Next Generation for Worf.

Kruge will come with the following:

  • Fully Articulated Body: More than 30 points of articulation allow the figure to be displayed in multiple dynamic poses, approximately 32 cm tall.
  • Commander Uniform: Meticulously researched, this Klingon uniform matches the pattern, and colors of the original costume recreated in 1:6 scale.
  • Boots: Plastic boots sculpted to match Klingon battlewear.
  • Hands: Six hands with sculpted Klingon rings to recreate a variety of poses.
  • Display Base: A hexagonal display base will provide additional support for the figure.
  • Disruptor: The Klingon sidearm of choice, worn hilt-out in a holster hanging from a shoulder chain.
  • Communicator: Authentically reproduced communicator based on the prop from Star Trek III.
  • A removeable robe with Klingon symbols attached at the shoulders.
  • A non-removable belt with Klingon-style belt buckle.
  • Armored vest with shoulder pads.
  • Vambraces with Klingon symbols along the length.

Superman and Robot Batman Join The Batman ’66 Toy Line

Now that most of the major heroes and rogues gallery from the campy Batman 1966 show have made their way to action figure form, McFarlane Toys is tapping into the comic book escapades of the Dynamic Duo for future entries into the series.

The Batman ’66 comic book ran from 2013 to 2016. It introduced several classic DC Comics characters into the campy version of Gotham City, who never made it into the TV show. One such character was the Last Son of Krypton. Yes, Superman himself made an appearance.

Even if you’re not a 1966 Batman fan, this is certainly a unique Superman to add to your collection. I only wish McFarlane Toys would improve the capes.

Sent to Earth from the dying planet of Krypton as a baby, Kai-El was found by farmers Martha and Jonathan Kent and raised as their son, Clark. As Clark grew up, the radiation from Earth’s yellow sun gave him extraordinary powers, which he kept hidden. Now fully grown, he uses his powers to protect his adopted world of Superman.

As far as the more outlandish characters go, Batman’s gigantic metal do-gooder, Bat Robot, is also joining the series. This may be one of the most detailed and complex figures created for Batman ’66.

The Bat Robot appeared in issue 14, where Batman’s mechanical crime-fighting machine is taken advantage of by the Riddler and the Joker. No, not in that way.

As a child, Bruce Wayne'” watched as his parents were brutally killed in Gotham City’s Crime Alley. Traumatized by their deaths, he devoted his life to becoming the world’s greatest weapon against crime-the Batman! He’s a master detective and an expert martial artist, but his greatest weapon is his mind.

One of the more interesting characters to appear in this comic book-inspired wave is Lord Death Man. His appearance in the ’66 comics is pretty similar to his standard DC Comics counterpart and probably wouldn’t have gotten past the censors for TV.

“Lord Death Man was a mysterious crime boss who could return from the dead. In one gruesome incident, he came back to life mid-autopsy. Lord Death Man also had superhuman strength and stamina, which he used to battle Batman, The Outsiders, and Talon. Ra’s al Ghul even sought to siphon the regenerative fluids from Lord Death Man’s body.”

Since McFarlane Toys now appears to be focusing on the extended universe of Batman ’66 villains, we’ll probably be seeing the following characters pop up in future waves:

  • Harley Quinn
  • Poison Ivy
  • The Mad Hatter
  • Scarecrow
  • Clayface
  • Solomon Grundy
  • Ra’s al Ghul

GameStop’s NFTs and Crypto Wallet Aren’t Going To The Moon

0

Last year, GameStop laid off employees and tried to chase crypto and NFTs. So, how is the company’s trip into the blockchain working out? Oh … oh, no.

According to the GameStop Wallet website, the company is abandoning its cryptocurrency wallet on iOS and Chrome as of November 1, 2023.

In case the screenshot doesn’t load, here’s what the notification says:

Regulatory uncertainty is a pretty vague reason. If GameStop were serious about competing in this space, it would be a good idea to publish a list of politicians who were looking to regulate the decentralized currency market and have customers take action via writing and calling to express concerns.

The wallet allowed customers to buy and sell crypto from GameStop’s marketplace, such as Ethereum and NFTs. Were you even aware that GameStop sold digital currency or non-fungible tokens?

A cursory search of GameStop’s crypto dealings on YouTube brings up so few results that aren’t reaction channels dunking on the gaming store’s decision. The most we could find that was from a trusted source was found on CNBC.

A year ago, NFT and crypto projects were sprouting up almost daily. While some made a mint, most people weren’t as lucky.

It could be worse. Over the past few years, several celebrities and “gurus” have swindled unsuspecting crypto enthusiasts out of thousands. We recently learned that even after promising to refund customers, Logan Paul still hasn’t made good on his word.

Google Wants To Lure Workers Back With On-Campus Hotel Stays

0

Even after Google said it was cutting costs by taking away staplers and internet access, the tech giant wants more employees to come into work. Google is so hard up to have butts in seats that it’s willing to offer up discounted rates for Googlers to stay at the on-campus hotel.

According to CNBC, the “Summer Special” offers Googlers a $99 per night rate. While the Mountain View, California, location is scenic, is it pretty enough to get employees to come back to work in a physical office?

The hotel stays will not be reimbursed by Google. It’s being sold to employees in a way that reminds us of the terrible “day in the life” TikTok videos:

Just imagine no commute to the office in the morning and instead, you could have an extra hour of sleep and less friction.

Next, you could walk out of your room and quickly grab a delicious breakfast or get a workout in before work starts.

After fees and whatnot, it would cost someone about $3,000 to spend 30 days in the hotel. Googlers have taken to internal discussion forums to rake the company over the coals for this tactic.

In other news, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has dispatched over 90% of its holdings of the stock trading website Robinhood. CNBC reports that the tech giant shed 4.3 million shares in June. This leaves Alphabet holding on to only 612K of Robinhood shares.

The trading website’s stock currently trades at $11.50 under the NASDAQ name ‘HOOD.’ In 2021, the Robinhood IPO started in the mid $30 range before peaking at $56.83. Since then, it declined through the latter half of 2021 and somewhat flatlined at the $9-$11 mark.

Robinhood rose to prominence thanks to the GameStop Stonks fiasco. However, it fell out of favor with would-be traders after some questionable decisions.

Robinhood is not the only stock to be shed by Google’s parent company. Other businesses that saw their shares offloaded were the DNA testing tech firm 23andMe and learning app developer Duolingo.

Darkwolf From Ralph Bakshi’s ‘Fire and Ice’ Gets An Action Figure!

After several decades, a new action figure based on one of Ralph Bakshi’s animated movies is finally here! Darkwolf, the ultimate fantasy film badass from Fire and Ice, is slashing his way to the collectible toy market later this year!

The 6.9″ tall Darkwolf figure is expected to ship in November. Like most collectible toys these days, Darkwolf features several points of articulation and accessories. Hopefully, this will lead to even more characters from Bakshi’s 1983 film getting the plastic treatment.

The long-awaited Fire and Ice hero may be pre-ordered directly from Frazetta Girls or via the Big Bad Toy Store.

There’s an odd difference in price between the two sites. The official website lists Dark Wolf for $70, while the BBTS wants $94.99.

Step into a fantastical world, unlike anything witnessed before, where fierce warriors, strange monsters, and villainous rulers engage in a struggle for the fate of a civilization. In this adventurous collaboration between Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta, it is a time of contrasting forces—good and evil, pleasure and pain—where Fire and Ice clash.

Dark Wolf comes with the following:

  • 1x Figure Body with 32 Points of articulation
  • 3x Facial Expressions
  • 3x Sets of Hands + (1x) Arrow Gripping Hand
  • 1x Battle Axe
  • 1x Bow with (3x) Arrows
  • Collector Friendly Box
  • Removable Gear (Boots, belt, cuffs and necklace)

In 1983, years after Bakshi had completed the first half of his unfinished Lord of the Rings adaptation, he created a fantasy epic inspired by the artwork of the great Frank Frazetta. Fire and Ice was mainly completed using Bakshi’s rotoscoping technique.

Darkwolf was portrayed physically and vocally by the late actor Steve Sandor. His other roles saw him appearing in TV series and movies such as Star Trek, Charlie’s Angels, Stryker, and Superman: The Animated Series (as Orion).
