Even after Google said it was cutting costs by taking away staplers and internet access, the tech giant wants more employees to come into work. Google is so hard up to have butts in seats that it’s willing to offer up discounted rates for Googlers to stay at the on-campus hotel.
According to CNBC, the “Summer Special” offers Googlers a $99 per night rate. While the Mountain View, California, location is scenic, is it pretty enough to get employees to come back to work in a physical office?
The hotel stays will not be reimbursed by Google. It’s being sold to employees in a way that reminds us of the terrible “day in the life” TikTok videos:
“Just imagine no commute to the office in the morning and instead, you could have an extra hour of sleep and less friction.”
“Next, you could walk out of your room and quickly grab a delicious breakfast or get a workout in before work starts.”
After fees and whatnot, it would cost someone about $3,000 to spend 30 days in the hotel. Googlers have taken to internal discussion forums to rake the company over the coals for this tactic.
In other news, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has dispatched over 90% of its holdings of the stock trading website Robinhood. CNBC reports that the tech giant shed 4.3 million shares in June. This leaves Alphabet holding on to only 612K of Robinhood shares.
The trading website’s stock currently trades at $11.50 under the NASDAQ name ‘HOOD.’ In 2021, the Robinhood IPO started in the mid $30 range before peaking at $56.83. Since then, it declined through the latter half of 2021 and somewhat flatlined at the $9-$11 mark.
Robinhood rose to prominence thanks to the GameStop Stonks fiasco. However, it fell out of favor with would-be traders after some questionable decisions.
Robinhood is not the only stock to be shed by Google’s parent company. Other businesses that saw their shares offloaded were the DNA testing tech firm 23andMe and learning app developer Duolingo.
