‘Genshin Impact’ Announces Animated Series

‘Genshin Impact’ is a fantasy online RPG mobile game that is also available for desktop and console play. Launched in 2020 by the Chinese video game developer miHoYo, it has become the highest first-year launch revenue of all time. Now the creators are collaborating with the Japanese animation studio ufotable to bring animated series based on the game with the release of a concept trailer.

Crunchyroll reports on their website, “Other than this being a ‘long-term project,’ there aren’t really any key details to go on yet. We’ll have to wait for more on what this crossover has in store, but for now you should absolutely check out the concept promo below.”

You can watch the concept trailer below:

‘Genshin Impact’ has won multiple awards including “iPhone Game of the Year” at the App Store Best of 2020, the 2021 Apple Design Awards for Visuals and Graphics, Google Play’s “Best Game of 2020,” and “Game of the Year” at the TapTap Game Awards 2020.

Ufotable is the studio behind popular anime such as ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,’ ‘Fate/Zero,’ ‘God Eater,’ and ‘The Garden of Sinners.’

The ‘Genshin Impact’ wiki describes the synopsis as follows,

“A pair of “star traveler” twins who visit different worlds arrive in the world of Teyvat and witness the destruction of the nation of Khaenri’ah. While attempting to flee the chaos, an unnamed god blocks their path and separates them: she captures one and seals away the power of the other. The sealed twin (known as the “Traveler”) awakens five hundred years later and meets Paimon, who becomes their companion. For months, they travel together and then make their way to Mondstadt. There, they begin the search for the Traveler’s missing sibling.”

The game developers also launched an online manga to further explore the world of Teyat that is available to download from their website.

GKids Acquires the North American Rights to “Unicorn Wars”

0

On Thursday, GKids announced acquisition of the North American distribution rights for Unicorn Wars, a new genre-bending animated feature for adults from Goya and Annecy Cristal-winning director Alberta Vázquez. The horror-comedy film will be premiering at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on September 22nd and the 26th. The film was also featured at the 2022 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and will be premiering at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival in October.

Producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, GKids will release Unicorn Wars theatrically in early 2023, following a domestic release this fall. This new deal marks the next collaboration between GKids and Alberto Vázquez after distributing Vázquez’ previous Goya Award-winning feature Birdboy: The Forgotten Children and short film Decorado.

Trailer for the 2017 Birdboy: The Forgotten Children film:

Full 11-minute 2020 Decorado short. CC has English captions to follow along with:

“There is nobody on Earth who could make a film like Unicorn Wars except Alberto Vázquez,” said GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt. “We are proud to partner again with this exceptional filmmaker on his richly layered and darkly funny new film about cute characters doing horrific things. It continues to haunt me.”

The summary of the Unicorn Wars feature film:
It’s “Bambi meets Apocalypse Now” in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.

For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war.

DC Universe Revisits Stan Lee’s “Just Imagine” Version Of The Justice League For Creator’s 100th Birthday

0

The late-great Stan Lee (December 28, 1922 – November 12, 2018) took the comic book fans by storm with the thirteen-issue DC Comics miniseries ‘Just Imagine.’ It is a revamping of the DC Universe from the perspective of Lee, writing the characters as he would have if he had been responsible for creating them. DC Entertainment is revisiting that corner of the multiverse with a sequel series to be released on what would have been Lee’s 100th birthday.

“DC is releasing Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee, a commemorative one-shot anthology featuring new stories based on Lee’s (with film producer Michael Uslan) interpretations of core DC characters from his Just Imagine series of one-shots (2001-2002),” they said on their website.

They added, “This 96-page Prestige format one-shot hits comic book stores and participating digital platforms on Tuesday, December 27; the anthology features 10 new stories spotlighting the Just Imagine characters from an incredible mix of celebrated comic book storytellers and new and emerging voices in comic books. In addition to a new story from Michael Uslan, this anthology includes stories.”

In an interview with Closer Weekly, Lee described the series saying, “I never used to read the DC books and think about how I would have done them. When I sit down to do them now, I’m thinking of them fresh. For example, with Wonder Woman, I said, ‘If I wanted to do a female with all sorts of super powers, and I wanted to call her Wonder Woman, how would I do it?’”

“That wouldn’t have occurred to me,” he says, “and I’m doing it in an altogether different way. And with Superman, I would just say that if I wanted a guy who’s the strongest man on Earth and has all sorts of powers, and his name is Superman — if that was my original concept — how would I get it into a story? I’m starting to think of it from that point of view, as if there was no previous book written,” he added.

Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Sandman, Shazam, and several other characters get a full makeover that culminates in a “Crisis,” for this Just Imagine universe, labeled Earth-6.

‘Gran Turismo’ Casts David Harbour In Pivotal Role

‘Stranger Things’ ‘Hellboy,’ and ‘Black Widow’ star David Harbour has been tapped to star in the upcoming ‘Gran Turismo’ film adaption of the video game franchise. The movie is being produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions with ‘District 9’s Neill Blomkamp directing the film which has a tentative release date of Aug. 11, 2023.

“Based on a true story, the project is described as the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won him a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver,” The Hollywood Reporter said. “Harbour will play a retired driver who teaches the teen to drive.”

This is the second attempt by Sony to produce a film based on the franchise. In 2013, a film had been announced with ‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski attached to the project. This version did not move forward and was seemingly abandoned in 2018. This new film was announced to be moving forward in May 2022.

“As one of PlayStation’s longest standing and most beloved franchises, it’s great to be partnering with Columbia Pictures again to bring Gran Turismo to life in an exciting way,” said producer Asad Qizilbash according to THR. “We can’t wait for audiences to see Neill’s vision of this inspiring true story of gamer turned professional race car driver.”

The movie is a dramatized version of a true story of a teen who played ‘Gran Turismo’ and would go on to become a professional racer. In the film, Harbour will play someone who will teach the teenager how to race in these Nissan competitions after he graduates from GT Academy. ‘Thank You for Your Service’ co-writer and director Jason Hall has been tapped to handle the script.

First released in 1997 as a Playstation exclusive, ‘Gran Turismo’ has gone to have seven sequels and received widespread acclaim as a racing game.

Amazon’s ‘The Rings of Power’ Debuted Behind Both ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘She-Hulk’

0

Amazon’s billion-dollar streaming epic The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power came in third place in terms of viewers this week, behind both House of the Dragon and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The data comes via Parrot Analytics.

That’s respectable, but probably not the kind of numbers Amazon was hoping to pull given the series’ steep price tag.

From The Wrap

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” made its entrance in the breakout shows ranking this week, its first full week of data since Amazon released the first two episodes on Sept. 1. It registered 34.8 times the average series demand over the past week which put it in the “exceptional” tier of shows (…)

Amazon’s strategy of releasing two episodes in its first week wasn’t quite enough to overcome the head start that both Disney+’s “She Hulk: Attorney at Law” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon” had.

Again, for any other streaming show, this would’ve been seen as a massive victory. But to come in behind She-Hulk, which itself is mid in terms of viewership for a Disney+ Marvel show is… not very impressive.

Here is a chart from Parrot Analytics showing who won the streaming race this week. Interestingly, Netflix’s The Sandman has almost dropped off the Top 10 chart entirely.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is also behind House of the Dragon and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law in both Critical and Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as of the writing of this article.

Still, it’s too early to tell if Amazon if getting the return they wanted on their massive investment. They’ve planned for five seasons of The Rings of Power. Is it worth it to see continue for four more years?

Third place is nothing to sneeze at. Honest.

The Little Mermaid Backlash Leads to ‘Whitewashing’ Ariel with AI. Twitter is Furious.

The Little Mermaid live-action trailer reveal has sparked all kinds of controversy all over the internet. The Little Mermaid trailer has been massively downvoted on YouTube, and some Disney fans are taking issue with the traditionally red-haired, blue-eyed Ariel being played by a Black actress, Halle Bailey.

The casting choice for Ariel initially sent waves across the sea to China, where the aquatic princess is apparently a favorite. Having a dark-skinned Ariel did not go over well with many Chinese people, however. So a Chinese user decided to “fix” Ariel and make her white. And the internet reacted just as you would expect.

Twitter, in particular, was up in arms about the ‘fix.’ However, it didn’t stop with just one attempt.

Another user (@TenGazillionIQ) trolled Twitter by using AI to make yet another white version of Ariel. And apparently got banned or put in Twitter jail because of it.

On one hand, a young actress shouldn’t be harassed because of the color of her skin. On the other hand, Disney knew exactly what would happen if they race-swapped Ariel. However, it’s doubtful that they had anticipated just how unpopular that decision would be.

Weirdly, we haven’t seen much at all of the movie. Halle Bailey obviously has the singing ability for Ariel, but can Melissa McCarthy pull off a campy villian as iconic as Ursula?

The irony in all of this is that the debate about the casting choice for The Little Mermaid will probably be much more interesting than the movie itself, if Pinocchio is any indication of the quality of Disney’s live-action remakes.

Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo Reunite For New ‘Batman/Spawn’

DC Entertainment announced a huge crossover event at San Diego Comic-Con. After twenty years since their last collaboration, Batman and Spawn are coming together for a new event. Written by Image Comics founder Todd McFarlane and drawn by “Dark Nights: Metal” artist Greg Capullo, the new miniseries will see the Court of Owls pit the two vigilantes against each other.

McFarlane explained on DC’s website, “Look, this is really simple. I get to play with one of the greatest comic characters ever (Batman), get to reunite with amazing artist Greg Capullo, AND am able to mix in my own creation (Spawn) into the storyline. These are the types of projects many of us creators in the comic industry only get to be a part of a few times in our careers.”

“My goal with this book is two-fold; First to just make it as fun a read as possible both visually and story wise. Then second, I hope this book will continue to add to some of the many reasons any of us actually collect superhero comic books. That’s to release an “Event” book that folks will remember for years to come. This should be one heck of a nice holiday gift,” he continued.

“I was fortunate enough to be able to draw both Spawn and Batman each for over a decade,” added Capullo. “Now I get to use those decades of experience to bring fans the event they’ve waited nearly 20 years to see happen. Spawn and Batman together again. It’s gonna be fire.”

Set for release on December 13, 2022, the Dark Knight and the One crossover will feature a cover from Capullo:

There will be several variant covers for this series done by McFarlane, Gabriele Dell’otto, Sean Murphy, Franceso Mattina, J. Scott Campbell, and Jim Lee.

This will be Batman and Spawn’s third meeting, following two crossovers in 1994.

Oh Canada! Tubi Is Expanding In The Great White North

The streaming service known as Tubi has gone through a series of library growth in recent years. They have scored sporting explosives, anime, adult animation, and a deal with Lionsgate. Now they are expanding further with a deal to bring their app to the land of the Canucks with a collaboration with Incendo and Content Canada.

They said on their website that they “announced today at Content Canada that it will expand upon its collaboration with Incendo on an upcoming slate of projects that includes a new film adaptation of Hans Holzer’s THE AMITYVILLE CURSE and an original horror film, MARRY F* KILL from Ian Carpenter & Aaron Martin (“Terror Train”). THE AMITYVILLE CURSE is currently in pre-production and scheduled to film in Montreal, Canada. Production is already underway in Montreal on MARRY F* KILL.”

They added, “At its 2022 NewFronts presentation, Tubi revealed it is doubling down on content and debuting more than 100 new original titles over the next year. Tubi is cementing its commitment to original content, giving audiences more of what they love, including horror and thrillers, throughout the year.”

Tubi already hosts an impressive horror library that includes television shows, movies, documentaries, and originals. Not only is this “doubling down” on content, but also on the horror genre.

Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson at Tubi expressed excitement saying in a statement, “With the anticipated launch of the Tubi Original TERROR TRAIN right around the corner, we’re pleased to share that we’re already building upon our content creation partnership with Incendo.”

“We look forward to continuing our collaboration and working with fantastic Canadian filmmakers and talent on an exciting reimagining of THE AMITYVILLE CURSE and our new original, MARRY F*** KILL which mixes elements of ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Euphoria’ in its captivating script,” he added.

This displays Tubi’s strategy for entering the streaming wars with its ad-based platform.

EXO-6’s New Star Trek Figures Include Locutus & The Motion Picture Cast!

The thing that saved Star Trek: The Next Generation is here! Locutus of Borg was the highlight of the early seasons of the relaunched series. Those first two seasons were a bit rough and sort of uninteresting. Then along came the Borg and the possibility that Riker may have to kill Picard, and suddenly many of us were glued to the TV. The effects of that episode would follow Captain Picard through the rest of the series and into the movies. Now, we can own a 1/6 scale replica of Locutus thanks to EXO-6.

Locutus is highly detailed, right down to the red light on the side of his face. The assimilated Captain is priced at $245, plus $25 shipping. Pre-orders are being taken now until October 3rd, 2022.

This one sixth scale museum grade figure re-creates the remorseless Borg from the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Best of Both Worlds, Part II” in exquisite detail. Standing approximately 12 inches tall, every element is reproduced as accurately as possible. The original portrait sculpt of Patrick Stewart reflects the stoic Borg expression and has a battery-operated red LED light in his head to simulate the Borg laser (not available in Australia, requires two (2) AG10/LR1130 cell batteries not included).

Locutus comes with the following features and accessories:

  • Articulated Body: More than 30 points of articulation allow the figure to be displayed in multiple poses, approximately 30 cm tall. Note – articulation limited by armor, no not attempt any extreme poses.
  • A mechanical appendage with articulated hooks and levers terminates his right arm. An additional grasping left hand is also included.
  • Realistic Portrait: Locutus’s emotionless expression shows no feeling for his fellows in Starfleet. Lovingly rendered by a top artist, this excellent likeness of Patrick Stewart as Locutus is specially hand-painted. Locutus’s laser is simulated by a red LED light in the head (Requires two (2) AG10/LR1130 cell batteries-not included).
  • Costume: The spokesman for the Borg wears a black body suit styled after the original costume. Over 30 armor pieces are attached, and specially designed tubing snakes around the entire body.
  • Display Base: A hexagonal display base will provide additional support for the figure.

In other news, EXO-6 is preparing for the next wave of figures and is an excellent accessory. What would Locutus or Seven of Nine be without a Borg Regeneration Alcove? The company teased an image of the device today but gave very few details. We’re not sure if the Spencer’s Gifts electro light thing will be functional, but it would be awesome if it were! Also mentioned was that EXO-6 will be tackling figures based on the screw of the U.S.S. Enterprise, as we saw in Star Trek: The Motion Picture! Check out the images below!
