Classic G1 Soundwave Re-Released With A J. Balvin Makeover!

0

I’m always looking for reissues of classic G1 Takara Tomy / Hasbro Transformer figures. Occasionally we see Optimus Prime or Hot Rod pop up, but Soundwave, not so much. Why is that? He’s one of the simplest in terms of parts and transformation from Decepticon into disguise mode. So he’s not “problematic” like Megatron’s gun mode.

Well, if you missed the last few re-releases of G1 Soundwave, there’s another one on the way with a bit of a twist. Rather than going with the old school colors, Takara Tomy got some inspiration from the Prince of Reggaeton, Columbian signer José Álvaro Osorio Balvín. Better known as J Balvin, the artist has an affinity for yellow smiley faces, and Soundwave is perfect for all that it seems.

Over at the Big Bad Toy Store, we saw the supreme Decepticon’s $69.99 J Balvin variation. He’s now bright yellow and decked out with the artist’s signature smiley face on the cassette deck window, and the entire front panel once transformed into stereo mode. Honestly, I like how he looks. He even comes with two cassettes based on two of J Balvin’s albums: Energia and Vibras. These two are Ravage and Laserbeak, but with new paint jobs.

Oddly, Soundwave does not come with his signature battery blasters. Instead, he is carrying two large rifles with blast effects. These are probably repurposed from other Transformers figures, but I can’t quite place who they’d previously belonged to. Regardless, the future is due out this October.

This musical Decepticon wields the power of rhythm to crush his enemies! Figure converts into cassette player mode in 6 steps and features deco and details inspired by J Balvin. He comes with 2 mini cassette figures, with deco inspired by albums Energia and Vibras. Energia Buzzsaw converts to condor mode in 4 steps and Vibras Stripes converts to tiger mode in 3 steps. Includes blaster accessory and 2 rainbow blast effects.

I’d not heard J Balvin’s music until researching the Soundwave figure. Check out one of his songs below:

Kevin Smith Fears ‘Irrelevancy’ More Than Death

0

Director Kevin Smith fears being irrelevant even more than death, according to a recent interview. Smith survived a massive heart attack in 2018, and dropped a massive amount of weight afterward. His doctor claimed his infamous weed-smoking habit actually saved his life.

Once a Gen-X indie icon, Smith has changed quite a bit since his brush with death, and many fans have taken notice. Yes, having a family and a near-death experience will do that to a person.

But strangely, he claims death scares him less than being forgotten, according to something he said to Total Film.

“Irrelevancy, I guess? I used to be afraid of death then I almost died and realized death wasn’t that scary. It’s just like graduating high school. You have to move on at some point… says the guy who made Clerks fucking III.”

Clerks III has pulled in just $1.5 million at the box office, however it’s in limited release and was produced on a shoestring budget. The last Clerks film, Clerks II, made over $24 million during its theatrical run, while Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back took in over $30 million.

While Smith fans seemingly enjoy the third Clerks film, many critics have been panning it. One of the most infamous reviews was from The Hollywood Reporter, which even stooped to dragging Smith’s heart attack into the critique.

This is the point at which those of us who hold some fond feelings for Smith as a person may be tempted to ignore iffy acting, writing and direction in the name of obvious sincerity and personal closure. On the other hand, any man who still gets to make movies after directing Yoga Hosers is already living on borrowed time, heart attacks be damned. And anyone who keeps going to see them really has no grounds to complain about how drab and uninspired they are.

Ouch.

Smith’s most recent films haven’t been bringing in much at the box office by Hollywood standards, yet he’s still always in the pop culture news feeds.

Like… always. Even when he doesn’t have a movie to promote. Could this be another indication that Smith is indeed terrified of becoming irrelevant and forgotten? Maybe he’s just got one hell of a publicist.

One of Smith’s biggest online controversies in recent years was the drama surrounding the Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series for Netflix. The show, initially promoted as a sequel to the classic Filmation series, angered many fans when He-Man was sidelined in favor of Teela.

But it shouldn’t have been a surprise with current year Hollywood politics. In fact, fans were warned this was happening months ahead of time.

Teela and Andra are just good friends. Honest. Nothing to see here.

This site’s very own Publisher and EiC tweeted about rumors he was hearing from people close to the production and was called out by Smith for it.

The series dropped, the rumors were (mostly) accurate, and Smith went into damage control mode. Despite the massive backlash and Netflix cutting back on animation, a second season of Smith’s Masters of the Universe reboot was somehow greenlit.

[Editor’s note: Being publicly called a liar and getting dragged by the media lead to months of harassment, doxxing and even death threats for me and my family. Few, if any, media outlets that ran with Smith’s version of the story even bothered acknowledging that we were mostly correct after the show premiered. Thanks for that, pal. — TP]

But maybe it wasn’t the quality of the show, or the happiness of the fans that ultimately mattered most to Smith. Maybe it was just that he wasn’t being forgotten after all.

Takara Tomy Double Dips With The Masterpiece Nemesis Prime

We can’t make any excuses. More often than not, Nemesis Prime is a palette swap of Optimus Prime. It was common with the Transformers line in the 1980s to stretch out the number of figures in a wave, but it’s a little questionable when it comes to premium figures. That doesn’t mean Nemesis Prime is not a cool-looking character, but at the same time, you’re still paying for the same figure just made from different colored plastic.

Such is the case with Masterpiece MPM-12N Nemesis Prime. It’s, as we expected, a recolored MPM-12 Prime from Transformers: Bumblebee. Nemesis Prime is $154.99 and is expected to ship around late June 2023. Orders will only be taken at Hasbro Pulse until October 10th.

Super7 Reveals Supersized Reptar and Classic Monsters Ultimates!

Super7 has made a couple of big announcements this week. First up, we’re getting a supersized Reptar from the classic Nickelodeon cartoon Rugrats. He’s 16″ tall and $295.

Super7
Super7

Just ask Tommy Pickles or any of the Rugrats kids, Reptar is the bestest hero ever! This Supersize Reptar designer vinyl figure measures 16” tall and 13” long from snoot to tail, and features a poseable head, arms, legs, and tail. With bright green skin, big teeth, purple tongue, orange eyes, and blue spikes all along its back and tail, Supersize Reptar includes all the details that make him larger than life in the eyes of the Rugrats!

There’s not a whole lot to say about Reptar as a character. The Godzilla stand-in was more of a commentary on consumerism regarding horror movie monsters. Like when Freddy Krueger was on everything from kids’ lunchboxes to pajamas. These were things we weren’t supposed to be watching as small kids, yet most of the merchandise was aimed directly at us.

Will Super7 release a Ultimates figure based on Reptar On Ice? It better!

Speaking of horror icons being made into toys, Super7 is expanding the Ultimates line of premium action figures to now include an MST3K classic and one of the earliest cinematic vampires. Nosferatu, as portrayed by Max Schreck in the 1922 silent film and the B-Movie Metaluna Mutant, are Super7’s first wave of classic monsters not associated with Universal.

Each figure is $55

It’s been 100 years since the classic horror film Nosferatu was released and Count Orlok looks none the worse for wear, which is to say, still super creepy! Super7 is proud to introduce the 7” scale Nosferatu ULTIMATES! figure of the ageless vampire Count Orlok, icon of early cinema horror!

Count Orlok comes with the following accessories:

  • 3x interchangeable heads
    • 1x Hypnosis head
    • 1x Night Cap head
    • 1x Neutral head
  • 8x interchangeable hands
    • 2x Expressive hands
    • 2x Fist hands
    • 2x Gripping hands
    • 2x Open palm hands
  • 1x Rat
  • 1x Key Ring

The Zagons have destroyed Metaluna and only one of their Mutant worker drones has managed to escape fiery death!

The Metaluna Mutant is light on accessories, which is to be expected since the creatures didn’t interact with many props in the film:

  • 2x interchangeable heads
    • 1x Neutral head
    • 1x Wounded head
  • 4x interchangeable hands
    • 2x Open claw hands
    • 2x Closed claw hands

The Metaluna mutant is from the 1950s This Island Earth. The film was the featured experiment in Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. This Island Earth is mostly unremarkable except for the Metaluna mutants’ design, which has gone on to be B Movie icons and still appears as Halloween masks every year.

Studio Shaft and Rooster Teeth brings fans ‘RWBY: Ice Queendom,’ a spin-off directed by Toshimasa Suzuki. Working with Crunchyroll, the series will be dubbed with a new cast with a planned release on Rooster Teeth’s premium platform on September 25 before it heads to Crunchyroll streaming service.

Crunchyroll also noted that the “series conceptualization by Gen Urobuchi (Fate/Zero, PSYCHO-PASS), joined by Tow Ubukata (Heroic Age) as scriptwriter and huke (STEINS;GATE visual novel) as character designer.”

Crunchyroll describes the synopsis as follows,

“In the world of Remnant, a place where science and fairy tales coexist, human civilization is plagued by deadly monsters known as the Grimm. For a time, victory by the Grimm seemed all but certain, if not for the heroism of those sworn to protect humanity — Huntsmen and Huntresses.

These warriors are trained and assembled into teams at schools like Beacon Academy, where Ruby meets Weiss and Blake — forming Team RWBY along with Ruby’s sister, Yang. While team RWBY studies to become the greatest Huntresses the world of Remnant has ever known, they are faced with a horrifying threat…”

The original RWBY was created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth that launched in 2013. It ran for eight seasons and produced several spin-offs including ‘RWBY Chibi,’ ‘RWBY: Fairy Tales,’ and the video game ‘RWBY: The Grimm Campaign.’ The show also spun-off a comic book series that had a crossover with the Justice League.

Marvel Comics Reassemble The Original Avengers For A New Series

0

The founding five Avengers plus Captain America are coming back for a new series titled ‘Avengers: War Across Time’ from the Marvel Comics creative team Paul Levitz and Alan Davis. Kang the Conqueror and the Hulk will serve as the primary antagonists for the series.

“Two industry legends team up for the greatest Kang saga of all time in ‘Avengers: War Across Time,’ a new limited series starting in January,” Marvel said on their website. “Joined by fellow superstar Alan Davis, Eisner Hall of Famer Paul Levitz—known for his storied career at DC Comics—writes his first-ever Marvel Comics story in this five-issue limited series! Set during Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck’s original groundbreaking run of AVENGERS (1963), this extraordinary saga will be a love letter to Avengers history just in time for the team’s 60th anniversary!”

Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, Ant-Man, and Hulk would serve as the original team-up in the comic books with Captain America joining later. Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet With, all former villains, would reform and defect to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes later.

They continued, “AVENGERS: WAR ACROSS TIME will see the original Avengers at their very best as they battle an onslaught of powerful and strange new threats that strike at the very heart of the team. At the center of it all will be Kang the Conqueror, reaching back from the furthest reaches of time to destroy the Avengers legacy!”

“Thor! Iron Man! Captain America! Giant-Man and the Wasp! It’s the classic Avengers against the Hulk on the streets of New York, and the beginning of a showdown with Kang the Conqueror that will span the centuries,” Marvel added.

The team would have several line-ups with the founders coming and going, but Black Panther, Spider-Man, Hellcat, Beast, Wolverine, Blade, and many others heroes and reform villains would make up the Avengers.

‘Konosuba 2’ Limited Edition Steel Book Blu-ray Is Coming From Discotek

0

Fans of the comedy isekai ‘Konosuba’ got a blessing on this wonderful world with the announcement that Discotek is re-releasing the second season as a Limited Edition Steel Book Blu-ray which features the English and Japanese language of the show including the OVA. It is currently available for pre-order and will be released on September 27th, 2022.

The anime is based on a series of light novels by Natsume Akatsuki and developed by Studio Deen. The first season was released in 2016 with the second season arriving in 2020.

Discotek made the announcement on their Twitter:

AniList describes the synopsis as follows,

“When Kazuma Satou died, he was given two choices: pass on to heaven or be revived in a fantasy world. After choosing the new world, the goddess Aqua tasked him with defeating the Demon King, and let him choose any weapon to aid him. Unfortunately, Kazuma chose to bring Aqua herself and has regretted the decision ever since then.

Not only is he stuck with a useless deity turned party archpriest, the pair also has to make enough money for living expenses. To add to their problems, their group continued to grow as more problematic adventurers joined their ranks. Their token spellcaster, Megumin, is an explosion magic specialist who can only cast one spell once per day and refuses to learn anything else. There is also their stalwart crusader, Lalatina “Darkness” Dustiness Ford, a helpless masochist who makes Kazuma look pure in comparison.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 continues to follow Kazuma and the rest of his party through countless more adventures as they struggle to earn money and have to deal with one another’s problematic personalities. However, things rarely go as planned, and they are often sidetracked by their own idiotic tendencies.”

Studio Deen announced there will be a third season of the isekai comedy.

Justice League’s Tactical Batman Hot Toys Figure Looks Badass!

While browsing Hot Toys, I finally saw a new release that wasn’t part of the MCU or Star Wars franchises. Thank the maker! This time it’s Ben Affleck as Batman wearing Tactical Batsuit in Zack Snyder’s Justice League! Sure, that is a mouthful, but at least I’m not writing about yet another Iron Man suit.

Regardless of your opinion on Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it’s hard to deny just how awesome Batman looked in that film. Of course, the artists at Hot Toys managed to capture all of the batsuit’s details in a 1/6 scale figure and got Ben Affleck’s face just right. Surprisingly, the tactical batsuit Batman is only going for $300 at Sideshow Collectibles. Expect the Bat to swoop in around October 2023 and March 2024.

Robby Reyes’s Ghost Rider Is HasLab’s New Crowdfunding Campaign!

HasLab is having success crowdfunding everything except Star Wars toys lately. The Cobra H.I.S.S. blew through multiple stretch goals; the same can be said about the Proton Pack. And now it appears that even Marvel’s Ghost Rider is proving to be more loved than the Rancor or Reva!

OK, it also helps that this combination of Ghost Rider and the Engine of Vengence looks fantastic. Lots of LED lights, flame effect accessories, and one of the coolest-looking versions of Ghost Rider in twenty years make this a must-back campaign. Others think so, too, since over 3,200 backers have signed on since the campaign kicked off yesterday. The end goal is 9,000 before getting into stretch goal territory, but there are still 44 days to go. The campaign will end, for better or worse, on October 31st at 11:59 PM EST. Early backers who help the campaign reach 9k before September 23rd will receive Robbie Reyes in human form. That’s pretty cool, but what about the stretch goals? Well, those are a mystery for now.

The painful part of all this is the price. $349.99 for a Marvel Legends figure and an 18″ long car. Oof.  I cannot deny that the whole thing looks cool, but the price doesn’t match the types of things we’ve seen for Batman and other properties in the past few years. Literally, the toy aisles today are full of toys that capture the same type of features as the Engine of Vengence but for less than one-third the price.

If the campaign reaches its funding goal, here’s what’s included:

  • Engine of Vengeance vehicle inspired by the supernatural muscle car in Marvel Comics All-New Ghost Rider (2014)
  • Premium 1:12 scale car design measuring approximately 18.5 inches long, 7.5 inches wide, and 5.5 inches tall
  • Vehicle fully equipped with 20 LEDs for scorching Hellfire light-up effects in tires, engine, grill, tailpipes, and driver’s seat headrest (requires 3 AA batteries, not included)
  • 6 flame trail effect pieces for tires and tailpipes
  • 2 Brimstone Risers for dynamic car display
  • 4 interchangeable tires and 1 additional engine to convert Engine of Vengeance from Hellfire Mode to Street Mode
  • Exclusive Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider 6-inch scale figure with comic-inspired accessories, including real metal chain

Nintendo’s Switch To Receive a Kirby Remake & ‘It Takes Two’ Port!

0

Another year and another Kirby game was announced at Nintendo Direct. I’m not complaining, but a little variety would be nice. And, no, I don’t want a slew of shovelware games announced for the eShop. I guess we’ll take what we can get until the next Metroid game comes out.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land originally debuted on the Nintendo Wii in 2011. It allowed up to four players to journey through Planet Popstar simultaneously. I remember it was a fun adventure with all the typical Kirby trappings. However, based on the video Nintendo of America included in its tweet, the graphics appear slightly more cartoon-like. It’s not precisely cel-shading, but there’s a noticeable outline around each character.

Sure, this is another gussied-up remake of an existing Kirby title, but now pink puffball can turn into a mech! Ever wanted to destroy your enemies as a Gundam-like Kirbo? Here’s your chance! Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe will be out for the Switch on February 24th, 2023.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Wii classic, check out this playthrough below:

In other news, GameSpot reported that EA’s two-player title, It Takes Two, is coming to the Nintendo Switch. The last we heard about this game, it was possibly becoming a motion picture. The co-op marriage counseling adventure simulator has already been released on most other platforms, with Nintendo’s hybrid console being the odd man out. That is set to change on November 4th.

Keep in mind that the game requires two players. It was not made clear in the article if the Switch version would support the “invite a player and they get to play the game for free” feature or not. If you don’t have someone at home to play with, you’re stuck with online multiplayer, which can be hit or miss depending on how well they communicate. It’s a co-op game in every sense of the word. Like marriage, you can’t progress without the other person’s help.

What do you think of these announcements? Let us know below.
