Kemuri Karakara’s ‘Laughing in Purgatory’ Action Manga Is Coming To An End

0

Fans of the supernatural action manga ‘Laughing in Purgatory’ got some disappointing news. The series from Japanese author Kemuri Karakara is coming to end. The series has been appearing monthly in the Tokyo-based Mag Garden’s ‘Monthly Comic Garden’ and will have its finale in the April 5th issue of the magazine.
“Karakara launched the manga in Monthly Comic Garden in January 2014. The manga’s 13th compiled book volume shipped in May 2021. The manga serves as a prequel to Laughing Under the Clouds, and it is set during Japan’s Warring States period, 300 years before the main manga’s story. The story centers on the Orochi at Lake Biwa. The manga inspired a stage play that debuted in 2017,” Anime News Network reported.
MyAnimeList describes the manga’s synopsis as follows,
“Set 300 years after Utakata ni Warau, and 300 years before Donten ni Warau, during the turbulent Sengoku period, it is the story of a young man named Ishida Sakichi, whose mission leads him to encounter a pair of mysterious twins at the Kumo Shrine.”
The cast of the stage play based on ‘Laughing in Purgatory’ include Hiroki Suzuki as Sakichi Ishida, Tsubasa Sakiyama as Baren Kumou, and Ami Maejima as Okuni Kumou.

The manga serves as a prequel to ‘Laughing Under The Clouds’ created by Karakara Kemuri and also published by Mag Garden. It was released in the United States by Tokyopop. It was picked up as an anime by Doga Kobo that ran for twelve episodes with a dub being produced by Funimation.
MyAnimeList lists the description,
“In the 11th year of the Meiji Era, the end of the samurai shogunate and the prohibition of swords has left Japan with lasting scars. Displeased by these recent changes, many former samurai plot against the new government, inciting a wave of bloodshed. To counter this movement, the government constructs a colossal prison in the middle of Lake Biwa.
Unofficially assigned to help the police arrest criminals, Tenka Kumou also serves as a ferryman to the Lake Biwa prison with the help of his two younger siblings: the ambitious Soramaru and the enthusiastic Chuutarou. Together with the former Fuma ninja Shirasu Kinjou, the Kumou brothers live a frugal and joyful life mostly dedicated to studying and training.
However, behind this relatively uneventful daily routine, the specter of the “Orochi” curse is starting to spread its shadow over the city of Oumi. According to legend, every three hundred years, Orochi reincarnates in a human vessel—and it is believed that this is the harbinger of an imminent catastrophe. As various groups clash in search of Orochi’s vessel, some aim to seal the curse, while others have darker plans in motion.”
The anime was produced by VAP and Nippon Television Network.

Boom! Studios Comics ‘Irredeemable’ And ‘Incorruptible’ Get Picked Up By Netflix

‘Irredeemable’ is a Boom! Studios comic book written by Mark Waid and illustrated mostly by Peter Krause and Diego Barreto. The story presented a Superman-like hero called The Plutonian who turns against humanity, instituting a reign of terror that other heroes seem helpless to stop as they try to stop him before he destroys the Earth.
Netflix has announced that they were developing a film adaption that would combine ‘Irredeemable’ with its spin-off series ‘Incorruptible,’ about a villain who becomes a hero after the Plutonian turns evil. It will be directed by Jeymes Samuel (‘The Harder They Fall) with Kemp Powers serving as writer and co-executive producer.
The show will be produced by Shawn Carter (Jay-Z), James Lassiter, Jeymes Samuel, Stephen Christy, and Ross Richie, The Hollywood Reporter said.
The streaming service said in a press release,
“Created by comic book legend Mark Waid (“Kingdom Come”) and illustrated by Peter Krause, Irredeemable is one of the most impactful series of its time, running for 37 issues and selling over 1.5 million copies. A deconstructionist remix of the genre, the series dramatizes how the world’s greatest hero — The Plutonian — snapped under the pressure of his responsibilities and charted a dark path to become the world’s greatest supervillain. Irredeemable’s sister series, Incorruptible, flipped the coin and followed supervillain Max Damage as he responded to the Plutonian’s evil by gradually transforming himself into a superhero.”
This will be the second attempt at a film adaptation of the comic book. In 2016, 20th Century Fox was planning a movie with Adam McKay (‘The Big Short’) serving as director with Tommy Wirkola (‘Kurt Josef Wagle and the Legend of the Fjord Witch’) handling the script.
‘Irredeemable’ ran for thirty-seven issues from April 2009 – May 2012. ‘Incorruptible’ ran for thirty issues between December 2009 – May 2012. It was also written by Mark Waid with artwork from Horacio Domingues, Marcio Takara, and Damian Couceiro.

Review: Aurora’s 1960s Godzilla Model Lives Again!

0

While checking out my local hobby shop, I spotted a box I’d not seen for several years. It was Aurora’s Godzilla kit! The last time it popped up was back in 2000. It took another twenty years for a reissue, most likely due to Godzilla’s 65th birthday in 2020. So it was another two years before I finally spotted this bad boy on shelves. Glow-in-the-dark parts and all!
Here’s a little history of this specific model. The original version, sans glow-in-the-dark parts, was released by Aurora in 1963. When 1969 came around, the company reissued to kit with new “Frightening Lightning” parts. Unfortunately, Aurora went out of business in 1980. In the 1990s and to the present day, other companies have been reissuing many of Aurora Plastic’s kits, including Polar Lights, Moebius Models, Atlantis Models, and Monarch Models.
Out of those four, Moebius has been my favorite. While they’re using the same molds with a few tweaks, Moebius tended to produce the cleaner kits with less excess plastic to trim away. Until today, I’d never seen an Atlantis kit in stores. So, let’s see what they have to offer.

The box itself is worth saving, at the very least, for the 1969 artwork. Growing up with these kits, we knew that the kit would turn out just like how we saw it on the box before model-building skills were advanced. Don’t give me a glow-in-the-dark gimmick, and expect me to ruin it with paint!
Even the instructions feel straight out of the ’60s. Odds are these illustrations are from the original guide. They’re hand-drawn, simple, and impossible to screw up.
Mike Phalin
Mike Phalin

The kit was loose, with several items already free from the sprues. However, all of the glow parts were intact. No parts were broken, but, oddly, so many pieces of the King of the Monsters had come loose when there was no evidence of damage to the box.
Mike Phalin
Mike Phalin
Reissues of these 50+-year-old kits are loaded with good and bad qualities. So, on the one hand, we get to see exactly what everyone else got to build half a century ago. But, on the other hand, very little has been done to fix issues common with these older molds. Whether it’s issues with significant gaps in the seams or parts that poorly fit together, they’re all there for advanced model builders to fix. So for this review, we’re putting this thing together as-is without applying any putty or paint to correct the problems.
We see most of these issues with the tail section and the top of Godzilla’s head. There’s a massive gap between his tail and body, while there’s also a size issue between the top and bottom of the tail sections. This could be an issue with warping due to the difference in the materials used for the green parts and glowing pieces.
Luckily the gap on the tail is hard to see once Godzilla is placed on the base. However, the seam on the top of his head is more noticeable. Even when clamped and glued, this seam would still separate.
Mike Phalin
The rest of the body is pretty sturdy in design. The connections at his shoulders and hips are angled, allowing for a tighter fit and a more stable structure when standing on his own two feet. We did have to tape certain parts together to make sure that the fit was as tight as possible.
Mike Phalin
Mike Phalin

There was an issue with the molding on the left leg. During the injection process, one of the two parts for this leg didn’t get enough plastic, leaving a bowed portion in the leg. This left a 1/16″ gap in the seam that we couldn’t fix without the use of putty. Since we wanted to assemble this straight out of the box with no extra steps, we attempted to clamp it with tape, but to no avail.
While not super detailed, the base gets the job done when showing just how much destruction Godzilla can leave in his wake. Unfortunately, the larger cityscape section was a bit warped, making it challenging to keep the two areas together while the glue dried. An easy solution would be to heat these parts and bend some more skewed building sections back into position. However, it would be hard to tell there was an error considering how much wreckage is in this scene.
Godzilla’s feet slot into the base thanks to two different sized pegs in his feet. The base isn’t very thick, but we had no issue getting the beast to stand independently with only a tiny bit of glue.

Assembly, with minor trimming and quick fixes, takes about 90 minutes. When Godzilla is put together, he brings back many memories of taking those first steps into model building.
Keep in mind that this isn’t a snap kit, so you will have to choose between the solid green or glowly bits during the building process. You won’t be able to swap out the fins after he’s put together. The hands, head, and feet can be swapped out because they stay more or less in place without glue.

I’m very pleased with this old Aurora kit as a throwback display piece. The various problems common with these retro kits are easily fixable with a few common materials, but for a quick project, it’s fun.
We picked this model kit up from ME Hobbies. Depending on your local or online retailer, he’ll set you back between $35-$40.

Rosario Dawson Represents Ahsoka Tano’s New Premium Format Figure

A lone Jedi on the planet Corvus stands against a tyrannical Magistrate. Settlers fear for their lives, afraid to speak out or fight against the current “government.” It will take the efforts of both Ahsoka Tano and Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, to liberate the settlement.
This episode of The Mandalorian’s second season brought Ahsoka into the live-action realm of Star Wars. Rosario Dawson did a fine job portraying the Gray Jedi who was out to find what happened to Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Sideshow Collectibles is celebrating this interpretation of Tano with a Premium Format Figure. Ahsoka will be constructed from polystone and lots of tailored fabric. While both lightsabers are ignited, there is no light-up feature. Sculptor Matt Black managed to capture Dawson’s face perfectly. The level of detail on display here is impressive.
Ahsoka will stand 18.75″ tall and is priced at $635. The Premium Format Figure will arrive in our galaxy sometime between November 2022 and February 2023. Pre-orders are open now at Sideshow Collectibles.

The polystone Ahsoka Tano Premium Format Figure features a mixed media costume application. Her pleated pants and brown belt are carefully tailored fabric, featuring stitching, patterning, and beading to bring even the most subtle details to life. Additionally, Ahsoka Tano’s top, arm bands, gauntlets, and tabi boots are sculpted with a variety of textures and paint applications to mimic the appearance of armor, woven straps, and pinched cloth. Her signature orange complexion contrasts with the dark colors of her outfit, and her portrait bears her iconic white markings, as well as her unique blue and white lekku and montrals.

It will be interesting to see where Ahsoka Tano’s Disney+ series goes. We’ll finally have a live-action Thrawn, probably, but how many other remnants from the “Legends” books will be dug up by Disney? And is that a good thing?

This ‘Power of the Primes’ Figure Includes Optimus and Orion Pax!

Another year, another batch of classic Optimus Prime action figures from Hasbro. The latest line is called the Power of the Primes, a welcome departure from some of the recent Cybertron-related toys.
This Prime is based on the G1 version of Optimus. While many of us Transformers fans usually have several Primes, this one should be a “must buy” because not only does he transform into a truck, but hidden in the design is Orion Pax!
Pax is the Autobot who would eventually become Optimus Prime. This figure pulls triple duty, which explains the $69.99 price tag at the Big Bad Toy Store. The Leader Class figure stands at 9″ tall and will be out this May. From the pictures, it looks like Orion Pax fits entirely into the chest area of the Optimus figure. We even get a Matrix of Leadership, too.

The Autobots and Decepticons use Prime Masters to wield the incredible powers of the most legendary bots in the universe: the Primes. Prime Masters carry the spark of a Prime, allowing them to share a Prime’s godlike ability with other bots. Anything is possible and everything is at stake when the Power of the Primes is unleashed!
With the Matrix of Leadership, Orion Pax becomes leader of the Autobots: Optimus Prime.

Orion Pax has shown up from time to time in toy form but rarely looks like his original G1 form. The Power of the Primes finally solves that issue by giving us a design of Pax that is pretty close to how he appears in the story War Dawn. Check out the entire episode below.

Ninja Turtles ‘Classic’ Two-Packs Bring Nostalgia With Modern Designs

Playmates, please! My wallet can only take so much! First, you bring back the original ’80s TMNT toys, now these cartoon-inspired two-packs! Have mercy, you fiends!
Big Bad Toy Store is currently taking pre-orders for what Playmates calls TMNT Classic two-packs. Each box will contain a Ninja Turtle and an enemy based on the design of the 1980s cartoon series. No shirtless Shredder in this set, sorry.
The four sets include Donatello Vs. Shredder, Leonardo Vs. Rocksteady, Michelangelo Vs. Bebop, and Raphael Vs. Triceraton. All the figures stand at 6″ tall and have several points of articulation. Due out in May of this year, each two-pack will be priced at $49.99.

Let the fight for New York City begin with the TMNT Classic Vs. 2-Packs from Playmates! These ultra articulated 6-inch figures include weapon accessories and bases, and come packaged together in a collector-friendly window box.

I like that a few parts from the classic weapons runner made their way into the box with Shredder. Yes, even the silly-looking kama is included. But, to be honest, I think the only thing we used that weapon for as kids was a way to have our Turtle figures glide along a zipline.
The Triceraton feels like the odd one out in this series. We go from three of the original villains to an extraterrestrial. A Foot Soldier would have been too much of a rehash from the previous two-packs. But why not one of the rock guys from Dimension X?

The Original Playmates Ninja Turtle Toys Return! Party Wagon Included!

It’s weird being now that generation businesses pander to because we have, supposedly, disposable incomes. Growing up, I noticed that many places went hard on nostalgia for my parents. From Betty Boop to The Three Stooges to The Wizard of Oz, that merchandise was everywhere in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Now the focus has shifted to the Generation X and the Millenial crowd.
We’ve been seeing this in the toy market over the past two decades. Nearly every plaything from the ’80s and even the ’70s is back in fashion. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appear to be the chief culprit for using the nostalgia magnet to suck money outta our pockets. So now Playmates are trying extra hard by re-releasing the original Turtles figures and the Turtle Blimp and Party Wagon!
Big Bad Toy Store now has the four original Playmates Turtles in stock with today’s inflated prices. Each brother will set you back $19.99. They’re packaged on blister cards which almost replicate the originals. There are some noticeable differences, but you’d almost mistake them for the 1988 wave at first glance. Hell, even Raph is in the same packaged pose!
Donny, Mikey, Leo, and Raph are 4″ tall, and each comes with a weapons runner. If you decide to take them out of the packaging, remember that Mikey’s ‘chucks are probably still notoriously fragile. On the back of their cards, only the four turtles are listed. So, it’s not clear if we’ll be getting reproductions of the Foot Soldiers, Rocksteady, Bebop, or The Shredder.

Now, if you’re a big spender, then the Blimp and Party Wagon should also go into your cart. I’m not sure if it’s just inflation or because these figures may be part of a limited run, but get ready to shell out a lot of greenbacks for these two vehicles. The Blimp will set you back $79.99, and the Wagon goes for $69.99. Phew. I mean, these are cheaper than the Super7 Ultimates alternative, but good lord.

I never had the Turtle Blimp when I was a kid. My friend did, and he would tie it to a zip line from his treehouse to the pool. The blimp was covered in clear tape because it was easy to tear. The Party Wagon, on the other hand, I got one Christmas along with the Technodrome and sewer lair. The entire area under the Christmas tree became a warzone between the Foot Clan and my various Ninja Turtles. Ah, the simple life.
