Review: The Expendables 4 – Random Action Heroes

There’s a charm to action movies that appeal to a primal desire to see things go crazy. Whether that’s from explosions, wild fist fights, or shootouts among two groups of people. When you think of action movies, chances are at least two of those things are going down. But when you gather a crew of past and present action stars into one movie, you expect all of it to happen in fantastic fashion. This is why The Expendables series worked out well for those who have an affinity for the genre. But while the first few films hit all the right notes to have a great plan come together, The Expendables 4(also known as Expend4bles) unfortunately falls significantly short. To the point that not even die-hard fans of the series can defend how rough it can get watching it.

The movie begins with Barney and Lee getting a team together to stop a mercenary named Rahmat from stealing nuclear warheads in Libya. Things appear to go right until the army they face manages to be more than a match for The Expendables. The mission ends when the team is hit with a devastating blow and Rahmat manages to steal the warheads. In order to retaliate and get back the stolen warheads, the CIA sends the Expendables back out under new leadership for a new mission connected to Barney’s past work. All is not as it seems as the team faces down a mercenary army undergoing a dangerous mission that will take them to Asia and near Russian territory.

At first glance, The Expendables 4 appears to make some bold moves early on with certain characters. However, the movie never truly commits to it and instead plays it off as a clever misdirect. It simply does not work and feels like a deus ex machina by the time the climax rolls in. The explanation given by the end of the film feels very lackluster and borders on being absurd. Not just for logical reasons, but by even the rules set by previous Expendable films.

Most of the movie is focused on Jason Statham as Lee Christmas, who is Barney’s friend and partner. Although Barney is around, he disappears for most of the movie, so a lot of the movie’s weight is dependent on Statham as things go south for everyone. Although it is always great to see him in action at any time, he gets some really good fight scenes and shootouts, he’s only part of the formula as to why the previous Expendables movies worked. It becomes less of an Expendables movie and more of a generic Jason Statham movie because of that.

But is Statham complimented by a great cast of action stars in their own right? Not really, at least not as much as some of the heavyweight action icons that were involved before. Instead of having Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, or even Harison Ford; we get stars who are more relevant today but don’t have as much presence. Instead, we get Jacob Scipio, 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson), Tony Jaa, and Megan Fox playing various roles in the story.

Each of them is great in their own right in other films, but in The Expendables 4, they all feel like placeholders or replacements for previous stars with far better resonance in the genre. Seeing Megan Fox and Levy Tran on the team adds some diversity to the group with more women in the mix, but they don’t add too much to what the movie is lacking. They are both stars, but nowhere near the level in action movies as some of their predecessors. It maybe would’ve been a far better choice to seek out other big female action stars (like Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, or Charlize Theron) that have a greater presence in the genre to really continue with the thematic elements of the series.

The overall story of the film feels is basic and what you would expect in a big-budget action movie, but again it lacks the charm of having major action icons being involved with it. Both Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture reprise their roles as Gunner and Toll, but are not utilized as interestingly as they were in previous Expendables films. They’re around for a few fights and goofy moments that might get a laugh for some but will fall flat for everyone else. This is also a big issue with the humor of the film, which tries very hard to be funny a bit too often. One scene involves Jacob Scipio’s character Galan going into detail about his sexual exploits (a golden shower is mentioned) which overstays its time very quickly and is just not funny.

It’s awkward and very out of place for both the characters on screen and the audience. At the same time, moments throughout the later acts that are funny get undercut but follow-ups that are either lame or awkward as well. Luckily there are some fights that happen afterward to keep things moving and get things back on track, but it happens more often than one would like.

But is the action in The Expendables 4 good enough to live up to the rest of the series? There are some brutal fights and cool shootouts that are definitely fun to watch. However, some of them involve laughable-looking special effects that don’t look finished. A truly hard-edged scene with the team in combat might lose some of its momentum by a vehicle that really looks out of place because of the CGI effects on it. This happens a lot with some of the shots involving aerial vehicles and trucks, as well as many giant explosions. By the end of the movie, things are already so wacky with the plot that the look of the explosions won’t matter too much.

The Expendables 4 is not a great movie, even if it has a few moments that fans of the series might enjoy watching. The series at this point seems to have lost its way or gotten tired. Whether due in part to decisions made behind the scenes or poor planning, The Expendables 4 just doesn’t have the same vibe and excitement that previous films did. The star power in this sequel doesn’t seem like enough to overlook many of the issues that pop up. Each one of the stars that make up this team might be good outside of it, but here everyone falls together as a team. They just couldn’t get the job done right.

Elon Musk Wants Human Guinea Pigs For The Neuralink Implant

0

Are you willing to let Elon Musk put things in you? No, not in a fun way. I mean, would you be willing to be part of his human trials for the Neuralink brain implant?

In a story we saw on PC Mag, we learned that the $260B Tesla CEO needs people to get behind his startup company in a very serious way. The implant’s intended purpose is to help patients who’ve lost the use of their limbs operate computers. It’s no miracle device, but it is undoubtedly a step in a positive direction … hopefully.

Nueralink is currently recruiting for clinical trials, but the eligibility criteria are pretty strict. Not just anyone can sign up.

Nueralink is looking for people who meet the following prerequisites:

  • Have quadriplegia (limited function in all 4 limbs) due to spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and are at least 1-year post-injury (without improvement)
  • Are at least 22 years old
  • Have a consistent and reliable caregiver

As of right now, Nueralink is not accepting applicants who fit into the following checkboxes:

  • Have an active implanted device (pacemaker, deep brain stimulator (DBS), etc.)
  • Have a history of seizures
  • Require MRIs for an ongoing medical condition
  • Are receiving transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment

The study is expected to run for six years. Volunteers will be expected to attend two one-hour research sessions per week.

Even after the study concludes, there is a five-year follow-up period that encompasses twenty visits, but it is not clear if these are in-person or at home.

While it is easy to be snarky when it comes to Elon Musk, I truly hope that this venture helps those who’ve lost the use of their limbs. However, I can already see the various news media outlets drawing up stories about how this tech is ableist or something.

What do you think of Nueralink? Let us know in the comments section below.

Wrath of Khan’s Saavik Is EXO-6’s Next Star Trek Figure

My second favorite Vulcan is getting immortalized by EXO-6! Lieutenant Junior Grade Saavik is joining the studio’s “Museum Grade” action figure line!

EXO-6 has captured Kirstie Alley’s likeness in this 12″ figure, along with the stunning-looking Starfleet uniform. For $295, the company is also throwing in her Regula One outfit and gear!

Pre-orders are open now through October 8th. Expect the true star of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to arrive in the second quarter of 2023.

The Vulcan is packing one of the best-looking Starfleet uniforms we’ve seen so far from EXO-6, along with an alternate outfit:

  • Starfleet “Monster Maroon” Duty Uniform: Meticulously researched, this duty uniform with a removable tunic matches the pattern and color of the original costume recreated in 1:6 scale. Diecast pieces make up various accents on the uniform, including the main chest badge.
  • Starfleet Field Jacket: The most complex and detailed piece of Star Trek costuming ever created, this field jacket was worn by Saavik and other crew members when they beamed off the Enterprise to investigate the disappearance of the Genesis device. It features opening pockets, diecast parts and a working zipper.
  • Boots: Soft plastic boots sculpted to match the cut and style of the original movie footwear.
  • Display Base: A sculpted hexagonal display base representing the Enterprise refit transporter was specifically created for The Wrath of Khan characters.

Saavik comes with the following accessories:

  • Heavy Duty Treicorder: Only seen in The Wrath of Khan this version of the tricorder is a large scanner used by Saavik on Regula One. A strap allows her to hang it from her shoulder.
  • Phaser: Hand phaser can be carried in the side pocket of the field jacket.
  • Communicator: A new style of communicator with flip top antenna grid, only seen in Wrath of Khan.
  • Multiple hands: Including the Live Long and Prosper gesture, and hands shaped to hold her accessories.

Ah, Geez. Beast Kingdom Adds Rick and Morty to Dynamic 8ction Heroes

*Enter any variety of overused Rick and Morty catchphrases here*

Yes, Rick and Morty collectibles are still rolling out, even if the show’s future may be in question. With just a few weeks away, Beast Kingdom has announced that the abusive and co-dependent multi-dimensional hopping duo has officially joined the Dynamic 8ction Heroes (DAH) toy line.

The 1:9 scale premium action figures stand at 20cm and 15.5cm. Each one packs several accessories and interchangeable parts. However, unlike most DAH figures we’ve seen in the past, the soft goods are limited. The only bit of fabric we get here comes in the form of Rick’s lab coat.

This isn’t exactly a bad thing since the lack of sewn outfits means articulation on both figures is far more dynamic. Yes, Rick and Morty can reenact their nihilistic hijinks on your toy shelf!

Best of all, each figure is priced at only $59.99! They’ll be out next May.

Beast Kingdom’s ‘Entertainment Experience Brand’ is unleashing a new D.A.H (Dynamic 8ction Heroes) action figure collection from the fantastically wacky world of ‘Rick and Morty.’

Rick Sanchez comes with 16 points of articulation and the following accessories:

  • Three (3) Rick Sanchez replaceable head sculpts (normal, drooling, startled)
  • Five (5) interchangeable hand options (fist/open/holding/item/relaxed holding with remote control)
  • Accessories: Portal gun, Upgraded laser gun, Portal(Pet film material), Remote control
  • Real Fabric-textured lab coat

Morty Smith, probably unwillingly, also has 16 points of articulation, accessories, and a to-scale Pickle Rick:

  • Three (3) replaceable head sculpts: (Normal, Confused, Angry)
  • Four (4) Interchangeable hands (fist/indicate/holding/relaxed)
  • Accessories: Mind Blowers, Three Test Tubes, Pickle Rick

Is it fair to say that Rick and Morty has run its course? I think Pickle Rick was the start of the slide into irrelevance, but the removal of Justin Roiland may have been the final nail in the coffin.

Mondo Resurrects Batman’s Phantasm In 1/6 Scale!

Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series introduced two great original female characters into the DC Universe but only achieved wide mainstream appeal. Move over, Harley, because The Phantasm is finally getting some love, thanks to Mondo.

The Avenging Angel of Death is getting the 1:6 scale action figure treatment. This figure is big and expensive, like Batman and the Joker from last year. The Phantasm will cost you $210, but you had better act fast.

The Timed Edition of the Phantasm is only on sale from now until September 25th. Orders are limited to only (2) figures per person and address.

This sadly underused character from Batman: Mask of the Phantasm made only one other appearance in Bruce Timm’s DCAU. She did, however, show up in the Batman Beyond 2.0 comics. Hopefully, the animated feature’s 4K Ultra HD release will rekindle people’s interest in Andrea and this badass character design.

Released after the surprising success of B:TAS Season 1, the cult classic 1993 movie introduced one of our favorite DC characters ever … Andrea Beaumont (aka The Phantasm). Available for only six days, our Timed Edition includes exclusive extras like the smoke base attachment and swappable Andrea torso!

Andrea’s vigilante alter-ego comes with the following:

  • Swappable Hood 1
  • Swappable Hood 2*
  • Swappable Andrea Torso*
  • Swappable Attack Blade & Acid Attack Blade
  • Swappable Hands:
    • Left Phantasm Fist
    • Left Aggressive Hand
    • Left Neutral
    • Smoke Attack Left Hand
    • Left Andrea Fist, Right Andrea Fist*
  • Smoke Base figure stand attachment*
  • Bat Symbol figure stand

The two four (*) accessories are exclusive to the “Timed Edition” version of the Phantasm.

What do you think of the Phantasm? Should she be introduced into more DCEU media? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
