Return To Monkey Island’s Trailer Shows Off A New Art Style

Set sail to Return To Monkey Island! The first full trailer for Devolver Digital’s upcoming sequel to the classic LucasArts franchise is here! Guybrush and crew look a lot different in this outing, a considerable departure from what we’ve seen from the games over the previous decades.
I would describe the art style as “papercraft expressionism.” The characters are a bit stubby and simplified. However, you’ll easily recognize several characters from the first three Monkey Island games. Ron Gilbert’s influence is still there, don’t get me wrong.
Monkey Island will be released on PC via Steam and Nintendo’s Switch console. No word yet if this sequel will come to Playstation or XBOX sometime in the future. A finalized release date has not been announced, but we know the game will come out in 2022.

It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck. His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, young pirate leaders led by Captain Madison have shuffled the old guard from power, Melee Island has taken a turn for the worse, and famed businessman Stan has been imprisoned for ‘marketing-related crimes’. Banter with old friends and new faces on familiar islands now under dangerous new leadership. Then, take to the high seas and explore the new and unknown as you work your way out of tough predicaments. Clever puzzles, bizarre situations, and devastating ripostes are all that stand between Guybrush and glory.

What do you think of the new look Monkey Island is sporting? Does a game lose some appeal when it undergoes a makeover like this? Did you feel the same when The Curse of Monkey Island came out? Let us know below.

I Knew It! Judge Caligula Is Next For Hiya Toys’ 2000 AD Toyline!

If you give a man a little bit of power, sometimes it goes to his head. Such was the case with one Deputy Chief Judge, Caligula. Once he was part of the Justice Department responsible for monitoring and judging Street Judges. Then, thanks to the power of hypnotism, he created his own army of Judges. With only two Judges unaffected by the scheme, they waged war to save Mega-City One from the tyrannical madman.
Not too long ago, I wondered if Caligula would be part of the line, and here he is! Hiya Toys is producing a Judge Caligula figure in scale with the rest of the company’s 2000 AD figures. Judge Caligula was possibly one of the most entertaining of all the memorable villains in the world of 2000 AD comics. Hiya Toys took all the iconic things about the character and put them into toy form. He even comes with Judge Fish!
Judge Cal is available for pre-order now at the Big Bad Toy Store. He’s priced at $19.99 and has an expected release date set for February 2023. Other figures in the 2000 AD series are also available, including an upcoming set with Judge Dredd and his Lawmaster. This PX Previews Exclusive is going for $69.99 and will come out in March.

The figure’s face looks a little rough, but this is just a prototype. I hope the clear plastic on Judge Fish’s bowl is more translucent in the final product.
Judge Caligula was based on the perverted Roman ruler and the actor who portrayed him in the 1979 raunchy Tinto Brass movie. The figure’s appearance doesn’t bear much in common with Malcolm McDowell, but you can quickly tell that this is Judge Cal. OK, the giant crest he wears around his chest is a dead giveaway.

‘Tokyo Mew Mew’ is a science fiction “magical girl” manga written by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mia Ikumi. It was published by Kodansha from 2000 to 2003. A previous series from production company Pierrot ran from 2002 to 2003 for a run of 52 episodes. The Japanese animation studios Yumeta Company and Graphinica developed a reboot anime that is set to be released in July 2022.

“What’s new in 2022? TOKYO MEW MEW NEW, that’s what,” HiDive said on their website.

The anime features the voice cast: Yuuki Tenma, Mirai Hinata, Ryōko Jūni, Rian Toda, and Momoka Ishii. It is directed by Takahiro Natori and written by Yuka Yamada. Yasuharu Takanashi is handling the music while Satoshi Ishino, who was the animation director for ‘Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ handled the character designs.

You can watch the trailer below:

AniTrendz describes the synopsis as follows, “On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is exposed to a mysterious ray that meshes her DNA with that of the endangered Iriomote wildcat. She soon discovers that she has developed superhuman abilities and enhanced agility. Her new powers are put to the test when she leads a team with four other girls, each endowed with special abilities of their own. Together, they must now protect the Earth from an alien menace known as Deep Blue.”

The manga had two sequels that followed the original titled ‘Tokyo Mew Mew à La Mode’ and ‘Tokyo Mew Mew Olé.’ The original anime was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment which only produced dubs for the first twenty-six episodes.
Two video games have been produced including ‘Hamepane Tokyo Mew Mew’ and ‘Tokyo Mew Mew – Tōjō Shin Mew Mew! – Minna Issho ni Gohōshi Suru Nyan.’

Apocalypse Goes Retro With A New Toy Biz-Inspired Action Figure

Hasbro has announced another retro-styled Marvel Legends figure. This time we’re returning to the world of X-MEN with a throwback version of the evil Apocalypse. Packaged on a card with artwork reminiscent of the early days when Toy Biz ruled the Marvel license, Apocalypse comes with multiple heads, hands, and other accessories.
This version is a bit of an amalgamation of the original two Apocalypse figures from Toy Biz’s ’90s X-MEN line, but with the color scheme of the character’s appearance in the Fox Cartoon from the same time period. The ancient mutant is $38.99 and is set to conquer collectors’ toy shelves on January 1st, 2023.

Look upon the future and tremble! He is Apocalypse, the world’s most powerful mutant, and from the ashes of our world he will build a better one.

Includes: figure and eight accessories.

  • 6-INCH-SCALE COLLECTIBLE FIGURE: Fans, collectors, and kids alike can enjoy this 6-inch-scale Marvel’s Apocalypse figure inspired by the classic Toy Biz Marvel Legends figures
  • MARVEL COMICS-INSPIRED DESIGN: This Marvel’s Apocalypse figure features textured sculpt and deco inspired by the character’s classic appearances throughout Marvel Comics and includes an alternate head, alternate hands, blast effect, and plasma laser cannon
  • PREMIUM POSABILITY AND ARTICULATION: This 6-inch Legends Series Marvel’s Apocalypse figure features extensive articulation, offering dynamic posability with other Marvel Legends figures
  • RETRO CARD PACKAGING: Includes retro-style cardback inspired by the classic Marvel Toy Biz designs
  • MARVEL UNIVERSE IN 6-INCH SCALE: Look for other Hasbro Marvel Legends Series figures with Marvel Comics-inspired characters (Additional figures each sold separately. Subject to availability.)

The first Apocolypse figure was a weak entry in Toy Biz’s initial line. It was early; I get it. They were still trying to figure things out after the flopped DC toys and the weird bulky Marvel action figures. Toy Biz got there eventually, and the proceeding waves got better and better. The second version of Apocalypse was shorter but stockier and had a great face sculpt. His hoses were also now, thankfully, detachable. The first figure’s broke so easily.

Too bad that the character was somewhat squandered in his own movie.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer,’ ‘Char’s Counterattack,’ and Gundam ZZ arrive on Crunchyroll

Gundam fans who subscribe to Crunchyroll just got some good news. The streaming service announced that they are adding three entries from Japanese production company Sunrise’s science fiction mech franchise.
“The theme song may say it’s not anime, but brand new additions of the Gundam anime franchise are (now) available on Crunchyroll! Users can now watch all 47 episodes of the 1986 series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, the 1988 film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack and the 2010 movie. Mobile Suit Gundam 00 -Awakening of the Trailblazer-,” Crunchyroll said on their website.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

Gundam Fandom summarizes the plot as, “As the continuation of Zeta Gundam, this series once again follows the story of the Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG) battleship Argama after Kamille defeats Paptimus Scirocco. To fight off the Axis Zeon, now called the Neo Zeon, Captain Bright Noa recruits a group of teenage junk collectors led by the loudmouthed but powerful Newtype Judau Ashta to pilot the Argama’s mobile suits. Now sporting a lineup of the behemoth MSZ-010 Double Zeta Gundam and the returning MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and Gundam-like MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki, the group is nicknamed the Gundam Team. As such, this became the first of a number of Gundam series where a team of Gundam mobile suits fight alongside each other regularly. The climax takes place at Side 3 in the Battle of Axis.”

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack

TV Tropes describes the synopsis as follows, “The year is Universal Century 0093: five years have passed since the end of the First Neo-Zeon War. The Earth Federation has recovered and created a new anti-colonial special taskforce to deal with rebel forces: Londo Bell. Elsewhere in space, Char Aznable reappears out of a self-imposed exile with a declaration that he now commands his own Neo-Zeon movement. Unlike movements of the past, Char intends to force the emigration of Earth’s inhabitants to space by bringing about an ice age through dropping asteroids onto the planet. Enter Amuro Ray, now a seasoned veteran of the Londo Bell, who will ensure his arch-rival will not succeed.”

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer

According to a MyAnimeList article, “In the year 2314 AD, the world is at peace. Thanks to the sacrifices of Celestial Being and its mobile suit pilots, the people of Earth experience a time of prosperity and unity, enjoying tranquil lives once thought impossible. Celestial Being, an organization once painted as villains by the Earth Sphere Federation, now exists in public perception as a group of heroes, celebrated in film and culture. When an extraterrestrial threat arrives on Earth, threatening the newly acquired calm stasis, Celestial Being springs back into action. Led by ace pilot Setsuna F. Seiei, the Gundam Meisters of the group battle the hostile alien forces, teaming up with old rivals to protect the human race from certain doom.”
Char was set to appear in ZZ (also known as Double Zeta), but his planned role was removed after he became the main antagonist in ‘Char’s Counterattack.”

Voyager’s Seven Of Nine Finally Joins EXO-6’s Premium Action Figure Line

I have a weird way of guessing which figure is next in a series. So when Tuvok showed up recently in the EXO-6 line of premium figures, I assumed that Seven of Nine was not far behind. And look who showed up!
The woman who grew up as a Borg drone before being rescued and rehabilitated by the Voyager crew is the newest Star Trek character to get a pricy action figure. Seven is $220 plus a $20 downpayment and $25 shipping. She’ll be arriving during the fourth quarter of this year.
Jerri Ryan was who everyone turned into Voyager for after the character of Seven of Nine was introduced and subsequently reformed. She sported a catsuit that left little imagination, and watching the arc she went through in the show made her more than just eye candy. Too bad Paramount’s Picard series ruined all that.

This 1:6-scale figure re-creates this iconic character in exquisite 1:6 detail. Standing approximately 11.5 inches tall, every element, from her purple cat suit and matching holsters for phaser and tricorder to the Borg implants, is authentically reproduced. The original portrait sculpt of Jeri Ryan has an authentic, hand-painted likeness.

Here’s what the sexy reformed Borg babe comes with:

  • Fully Articulated Body: More than 30 points of articulation allow the figure to be displayed in multiple dynamic poses, approximately 30 cm tall.
  • Realistic Portrait: Seven’s portrait is lovingly rendered by top artists, with an excellent likeness of Jeri Ryan. Each head sculpt is specially hand-painted.
  • Purple jumpsuit: Meticulously researched, this outfit matches the pattern, and color of the original, recreated in 1:6 scale. A purple belt is included so she can wear the holsters for the tricorder and phaser. An authentically scaled communicator badge is permanently affixed. Built-in boots replicate the ones used in the original costume.
  • Hands: A total of ten interchangeable hands are included so she can be displayed holding the tricorder, the Type II phaser and Compression Phaser rifle.
  • Display Base: A hexagonal display base featuring the transporter pad will provide additional support for the figure. Two different inserts for the floor of the base can represent the transporter pad or the center of the transporter array.
  • Autograph card: An informational LCARS card that can used to get an autograph from the performer and displayed with your figure.
  • Type II hand phaser. The phaser can be worn in a holster that magnetically attaches to the belt.
  • TR-590 Tricorder X: This standard tricorder can be opened or worn in a holster.
  • Phaser rifle: Compression Phaser rifle used by the Voyager crew.
  • PADD (Personal Access Display Device): the data display device used on board Voyager.

And now for some Seven of Nine best of clips:

Sentai Filmworks Grabs ‘Phantom of the Idol’ Anime

0

‘Phantom of the Idol’ is a comedy manga about a lazy pop star who becomes haunted by the ghost of an idol who died tragically. It is written by Hijiki Isoflavone and published by Kodansha. The manga became popular with readers, winning third place in the 2019 Next Manga Award. Its popularity led to an anime adaption being developed by the Japanese animation production company Studio Gokumi set to premiere in July 2022 with Sentai Filmworks picking it up for a North American release.
“Sentai announced today that it acquired exclusive rights to the laugh-out-loud paranormal comedy anime series ‘Phantom of the Idol,’ they said on their website. “Sentai will premiere the series exclusively on HIDIVE, its anime-focused streaming service, during the Summer 2022 simulcast season.”
The show is directed by Daisei Fukuoka with Saori Hosoda handling the character designs.
You can watch the trailer below:

Anime News Network describes the synopsis as follows,
“Yuuya, one half of the boy pop duo ZINGS, may be the laziest performer in the Japanese music industry. His partner is out there giving 110% every night (and, thankfully, he’s quite popular), but Yuuya’s half-assed, sloppy dancing, and his frankly hostile attitude toward the audience, has the fans hating him and his agent looking for any excuse to cut him loose. The career of a pop idol just isn’t the path of easy leisure and adulation Yuuya expected…After a particularly lifeless concert appearance, Yuuya meets a girl backstage. She’s dressed to the nines in a colorful outfit, she’s full of vim and vigor, and all she wants from life is to perform. There’s just one problem: She’s been dead for a year. This is the ghost of Asahi Mogami, the beloved singer whose time on the stage was tragically cut short.”
‘Phantom of the Idol’ is serialized in Kodansha’s ‘Monthly Comic Zero Sum’ magazine.

Just One Bad Day: ARTFX Captures ‘The Killing Joke’ In Statue Form

Kotobukiya‘s latest ARTFX statue captures the birth of the Joker in a 1/6th scale work of art. His eyes bleeding, his mouth forever stapled into a sinister smile, and his hair chemically changed to a ghastly green; the Joker was born out of accident or maybe fate.
The statue is based on the very first panel after the Joker’s transformation, and this thing is spot on.

One day, having lost all emotional support, a Red Hood Gang member is being hunted down by Batman. Cornered with nowhere to run, the man jumps into a river in a frantic attempt to escape. However, chemicals in the water from the Ace Chemical Processing Plant bleach his skin white, his hair bright green, and his lips red. Seeing his reflection in the water, the man stumbles to his feet and lets out an endless howling laugh, thus transforming into a madman.

All it takes is one bad day…
Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke is a well-known story for a reason. It is possibly one of the grimmest, if not the most revealing, Batman stories. It set many things that remained a staple in the Dark Knight’s comics for years. If you’ve not read it, I won’t spoil much. In the comic, we learn one of the many possible origins of The Joker.
This one, which appears to be the most favored among fans, is that the Clown Prince of Crime started as a failed comedian with a pregnant wife. To score money for his growing family, he helps a pair of criminals break into a chemical plant he once was employed by. Batman foils the plot, but the soon-to-be Joker accidentally falls into a vat of chemicals. A series of unfortunate events and the toxins pushed the comedian into becoming Batman’s most devious villain.
