0

The fantasy anime series from Studio ENJI ‘Management of a Novice Alchemist’ is set to premiere in Japan in October 2022. Based on the light novels written by Mizuho Itsuki and illustrated by Fuumi, HiDive announced that they will be streaming the show in North America.

They said on their website, “HIDIVE announced today that it acquired exclusive rights to Management of a Novice Alchemist, the heartfelt fantasy anime series based on the light novel of the same name by Mizuho Itsuki. The series will premiere exclusively on HIDIVE this fall.”

The Japanese cast includes Kanon Takao, Hina Kino, Saori Ōnishi, and Nanaka Suwa.

“Studio ENGI (A Certain Scientific Railgun T) handles animation production for this charming series. The series is directed Hiroshi Ikehata (episode director in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) with series composition from Shigeru Murakoshi (I’m Quitting Heroing, Zombie Land Saga). Yosuke Ito (The Detective is Already Dead, Key Animation for Pokémon XY) provides character design and serves as chief animation director,” they added.

Sentai Filmworks will handle home video releases, but has not announced if there will be an English dub.

You can watch the trailer below:

AniList describes the synopsis as follows,

“Orphaned Sarasa just graduated from the Royal Alchemist Academy, and that means her longed-for life of elegance and riches is close at hand! As a graduation gift, her teacher gifts her a house to set up shop — but Sarasa’s dilapidated new digs are beyond far-flung. What’s a novice alchemist to do when they’re stuck in the middle of nowhere with a business to run and supplies to gather from a very dangerous natural world? Whether it’s facing down frightening fantasy creatures or finding creative ways to attract customers, Sarasa has her work cut out for her as she achieves her dream of becoming the greatest alchemist around!”

‘Management of a Novice Alchemist’ was originally published as a web novel online at Shōsetsuka ni Narō. It has since been serialized as a manga by ‘Comic Valkyrie.’

Tubi Announces New Film ‘Spread’ Has Begun Production

0

Tubi has announced that they have begun production on the new film ‘Spread,’ said to be based on a true story. The movie is being directed by Ellie Kanner with Buffy Charlet handling the script as well as co-producing it with Tubi Films and Cartel Pictures.

Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson said in a press release, “SPREAD is a smart comedy inspired by a true story that shows how an unexpected turn in one’s career aspirations can spark a journey of self-discovery.”

“The fantastic Liz Gillies and the legendary Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel are joined by an outstanding ensemble cast in this upcoming Tubi Original with a wholly unique voice from an incredibly funny and perceptive screenplay,” he added.

The movie stars Gillies, who also is an executive producer. It also stars Bryan Craig, Blake Harrison, Keith Walker, Dia Frampton, Jonah Platt, and Diora Baird.

Tubi describes the plot synopsis as follows,

“SPREAD follows Ruby (Gillies), an aspiring journalist and staunch feminist, who has big dreams but has not done much to make them a reality. Broke and desperate, Ruby is forced to swallow her pride and take a temp job at SPREAD, an outdated adult magazine. There she discovers that despite the industry, this is just another office job with bad coffee, stale pastries, and unhappy employees. Planning to escape as soon as possible, Ruby somehow finds herself making a good impression on her boss, Frank Ferretti (Keitel), a former industry king who has been riding on his glory days. Needing a fresh take, Ferretti puts Ruby in charge of designing the company’s new app. While trying to hide her status working in the adult business, Ruby steps into her own power and slowly changes her tune on an industry that she might have a chance to change for the better.”

Buffy Charlet claims that the movie is partially based on the time she spent working at ‘Hustler’ magazine.

Netflix’s One Piece Season 1 Finishes Filming

0

The filming for Netflix’s One Piece TV’s first season has been completed as of early September. Various people involved with the live action series took to Twitter and Instagram on September 8th to celebrate the wrap-up of filming. It’s also been estimated as to when the series will be premiering on Netflix.

From Iñaki Godoy, the actor playing the main character Luffy:

From the Showrunner, Steve Maeda:
From the Showrunner Matt Owens:

A short video clip of actress Emily Rudd, who’s playing as Nami, and both Showrunners share who their favorite One Piece characters are:

Fellow Showrunner Steve Maeda shared a video that was shown on a Netflix Tudum online streaming event on Saturday, September 24th. The music is not likely to be for the series specifically, since someone figured out it’s a Classic Western song by ALIBI called Comrades:

Now starts the next hard work with the special effects and video editing. Estimated premiere date is expected to be around mid 2023.

Cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker was recently interviewed for Filmmaker’s Academy in which she gave some insight as to what to expect from the Netflix series. Whitaker explained how she was already familiar with the source material, as she used to read the manga to her son, and then they would watch the series together. They have seen all 1,000+ episodes of the anime. She revealed that she had a custom camera lens made just to get the right effect for the cinematography that she envisioned for the type of series One Piece is.

Whitaker also explained how she sought advice from fellow cinematographers who have worked on scenes involving ships, including from films such as Life of Pi and Pirates of the Caribbean.

And lastly, this live action TV adaption will not be a carbon copy of the manga or anime, but an adaption that can stand on its own for old and new fans. Not everything that can be effectively portrayed in manga and anime will be effectively translated into live action.

What do you think of the idea of One Piece becoming a live action TV series? Let us know!

You can watch the trailer for the show below:

In 2017, the show also received a television film in the form of an OVA titled ‘Encouragement of Climb: Omoide Present.’

Anime Corner describes the synopsis as follows,

“Aoi prefers indoor hobbies and is afraid of heights, but her childhood friend Hinata loves to show off her passion for mountain climbing. As young children they once watched the sunrise from the top of a mountain, and now they’ve decided to take up mountain climbing in hopes of seeing that sunrise again. They have cooking battles with mountaineering gear, climb small hills in their neighborhood, and meet new mountaineering friends as they learn the ropes of the hobby. When will they finally see that sunrise again?”

The anime is based on the slice-of-life manga series written and illustrated by Shiro. It has been published by Earth Star Entertainment since August 2011.

At Last! ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Cartoon Action Figures!

Thanks to our friend Grim Inc., we learned that new figures based on the ’80s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon are on the way. This initial wave contains six characters across four SCUs. Wave 1 includes Dungeon Master & Venger (Target exclusive), Bobby & Uni, Hank, and Diana. The figures are on 1:12 scale; most figures will be about 6″ tall.

It appears that Eric, Sheila, and Presto will be saved until Wave 2. In a surprising twist, Hasbro isn’t using the “build-a-figure” gimmick in this toy line. I would have expected the company to try to get you to collect all of them to build a scaled-down Tiamat or something similar.

Each figure comes with a few accessories and at least one die. For example, the $49 Dungeon Master & Venger two-pack includes a percentile die and giant d20. Meanwhile, the $24.99 figures come with the following: Hank gets a d8, Diana a d20, and Bobby has a d12. I don’t remember the dice playing a role in the cartoon, but ok.

Target has not put a release date on these figures yet.

Dungeons & Dragons had a decent run on TV during the 1980s. The show received three seasons with a total of 27 episodes. Rather than being a straight-up fantasy adventure, the show started with a group of kids from the “present day” being transported into the world of D&D thanks to a magical carney ride. That or the kids accidentally got some of the carnival workers’ black tar heroin mixed in with their corndogs.

Either way, the kids are seemingly trapped, with the only aid being the mysterious Dungeon Master. The diminutive wizard gifts each person in the group with a unique skill, weapon, or power. The series ended without a conclusion, but a final unproduced episode would have wrapped things up and would keep the door open for more adventuring opportunities.

The closest we ever came to getting a screen-accurate live-action version of the cartoon was when a Brazilian car advert premiered on TV a few years ago. Check it out below:

SEGA’s ’91 Sonic Statue Is Full Of Nostalgia and LED Lights

0

Dark Horse Direct is now taking orders for another First4Figures statue. We’re going old school with classic Sonic in the Green Hill Zone this time! The 11″ tall PVC statue shows the speedy blue hedgehog as he passes a checkpoint on top of the familiar brown and orange checkerboard base. You can almost hear that GHZ music playing in your ears just by looking at it.

The Sonic The Hedgehog statue is priced at $119.99. As is to be expected with most collectibles these days, the static display piece does have a light-up feature. The checkpoint sphere and Star Circle are illuminated via LEDs. What is interesting to note is that this statue’s fine print says that the USB cable and lithium ion battery are not included. Hopefully, you can just plug the statue in with your own cable, and the battery is optional.

Expect this statue to start shipping during this quarter.

The highly detailed Sonic PVC statue is seen striking a dynamic pose, revving up to run faster than the speed of sound. The base design is inspired by the Green Hill Zone, and on it is also the Star Post checkpoint, which you can rotate up to 90 degrees, allowing for multiple viewing angles. If you have 50 rings when reaching a checkpoint, a Star Circle will appear, which grants you access to a special level. The Collector’s Edition of this statue comes with the Star Circle and bright LED functions for both the checkpoint bulb and the Star Circle.

MotU Diamond Ray Of Disappearance and Duncan’s Mace Replicas Are Here!

0

Want to bash the evil forces on Skeletor or maybe make someone you don’t like disappear? Thanks to Factory Entertainment’s newest Masters of the Universe replicas, you can now do both! Previously, the company had created a replica of He-Man’s Power Sword and Skeletor’s Havoc Staff. Now you can get your hands on the Diamond Ray of Disappearance and Man-At-Arms’s Mace!

The Diamond Ray Of Disappearance should be instantly familiar to anyone who grew up watching He-Man. For many of us, the magical gem was part of the first episode of Masters of the Universe that we witnessed on September 5th, 1983. Now you can own that piece of history with this 1:1 replica that features an acrylic diamond with an LED light effect inside the box! The replica is priced at $249.99 and is ready to ship now!

Another new weapon to join the MotU armory is the mace we sometimes see Man-At-Arms wielding. Unfortunately, the mace is limited to only 500 copies and is made from a sand-casted brass alloy. So, this thing is probably going to be heavy. The replica measures 20″ long, and the handle is wrapped with “genuine leather dyed oxblood red.” Personally, I would have liked the mace to be painted the traditional Mattel orange, but you get what you get.

If you order Duncan’s mace directly from FE, you’ll get it discounted from $399.99 to $349.99. You’ll need to be patient, though, because this replica isn’t going to ship until Spring 2023. However, a three-installment payment plan is available if you don’t want to lose a few hundred bucks immediately.

Our officially licensed Masters of the Universe Man-At-Arms Mace Prop Replica is 20-inches long and is sand-cast from brass alloy as an homage to the color the original toy accessory, but with a realistic finish and enhanced detail intended to convey the appearance of an actual historical mace. This includes the addition of a unique texture to the outer surfaces, giving the replica an ancient and battle-worn patina. The handle is wrapped in genuine leather dyed oxblood red.

The box was first sculpted as a 3D model. Taking inspiration from ancient ossuary boxes, fine details were then added by hand to give the appearance of age and wear. It features mystical engraved script and is cast from polsystone. The stone itself is supported on an industrial-looking cradle that houses an LED lighting effect. This effect is triggered by a hidden sensor when the box is opened, lighting the diamond from beneath. A round-cut diamond shape was chosen to maximize the sparkle when the LED light shines through its many facets. The stone is high pressure cast in acrylic.
