Resident Evil 4 Remake Demo Impressions – Leon Looks Better?

One of the most anticipated games of 2023 is the remake of Resident Evil 4 from Capcom. The original is a beloved classic in the Resident Evil series, often credited as one of the major shifts in the franchise that had a major impact on subsequent Resident Evil games afterward. But those who never played the original game may not have to wait much longer to see if they’re all in with Leon Kennedy and crew with the release of the Chainsaw Demo of Resident Evil 4 Remake for multiple platforms. Evil may have evolved once again with the power of next-gen consoles, and it’s bringing a bigger chainsaw with it.

The Chainsaw Demo for Resident Evil 4 remake is the first area after Leon Kennedy arrives in the Spanish town at the beginning of the story. It’s a short demo, roughly around 20 minutes or so, where you can get a good idea of how the controls feel and how great the visuals look. The RE Engine gives the original game a major upgrade with tons of details and extra flair that the 2005 original game could only dream of achieving. Leon looks fantastic, while his surroundings exude a creepiness and foreboding vibe that will cause you to hesitate when moving around every corner.

Much like the previous Resident Evil remake titles, the biggest change to the experience is the massive improvement to the atmosphere. Things feel a whole lot scarier in here, with the dramatic lighting and bone-chilling sounds making every spot you go to feel like a setup to scare you. Everything works together in creating a far better horror vibe than the original game, which will please many long-time Resident Evil fans.

Controlling Leon feels very good. The layout of the controls is very similar to Resident Evil 2 Remake, which feels better to move around and quickly take action when things get crazy. As you move through the demo and make your way to the central part of the nearby village, the game has pop-ups that guide you through some of the basics of Resident Evil 4.

Little things are changed, such as the wording of abilities and actions you can take in the menus, but their function remains the same as the original game. You can craft items together to make stronger or more useful items, objects you pick up can be inspected for secrets, and you can even take a closer look at some of the gruesome things around you. The RE Engine makes everything you see look very good, even if it’s one of the most hideous things you’ve ever seen.

But what about the zombies you encounter? This is Resident Evil 4 after all, so how are the Las Plagas? While you don’t get to see many of the crazier versions of Las Plagas in the chainsaw demo, you do get to fight against some of the lesser zombies and the chainsaw-wielding boss that chases you around in the original. With all of the visual upgrades for this remake, these encounters look and feel deadlier. You’ll have to be quick thinking to take down zombies with your pistol or knife, but without lingering around for too long. Much like before, these zombies come at Leon in groups and will throw axes and lunge at him relentlessly. And when the chainsaw comes out, the zombie swinging it around won’t stop until Leon is chopped up to pieces. The entire section of the demo is satisfyingly fun to play and terrifying when things go wrong.

Luckily the demo isn’t all that it appears to be at face value. Capcom managed to sneak in a few secrets that you can find if you play through the demo again, including new weapons and a few changes you may notice from the original game. You can find a TMP machine gun towards the end of the demo if you do a few things beforehand, and get to keep it with you each time you play the demo again.

There’s even a hidden difficulty within the demo called Mad Chainsaw Mode that is exclusive to the demo and won’t be in the final game. If you enter a specific combination at the main menu, you can enable the super hard mode that increases the strength of the zombies, makes them incredibly more aggressive, and gives the Dr. Salvador zombie a flaming chainsaw. The placement of enemies is also mixed up, while also making them less prone to staggering you attack them. Getting through this mode is prohibitively hard if haven’t already gotten used to how the demo plays and where you can exploit enemy weaknesses.

The unfortunate part of this demo is that progress in it does not carry over to the final game. Who knows what other secrets might be hidden within the demo as well, but for a first impression Capcom definitely hit its mark well. The demo gives a very good idea of how the game is shaping up and what we can expect when Resident Evil 4 Remake releases on March 24, 2023. If the rest of the game is up to the same quality as what was conveyed in the chainsaw demo, then fans will have a lot to get excited about.

Are you looking forward to the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake? What platform will you be getting the game on? Post your thoughts in the comments and let us know!

A Stage Play Based On ‘Stranger Things’ Is Happening

0

‘Stranger Things’ is headed for its fifth and final season on Netflix. However, fans everywhere got some good news that the science fiction series will get some new life in a limited capacity as a stage play. Netflix is bringing an off-Broadway version with ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ which will act as a prequel to the show.

“Based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, STRANGER THINGS: THE FIRST SHADOW, a new play written by Kate Trefry, will receive its world premiere in late 2023 at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End, directed by Stephen Daldry with co-direction by Justin Martin,” Netflix said on their website. Produced by Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions, the play will go on sale this spring, details of which will be announced later this month. The Duffer Brothers act as creative producers, with 21 Laps as associate producer.”

Netflix described the series as follows, “Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach. Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end.”

Fans can find out how to register to view the stage play on a special website where you can find out about scheduling and locations.

‘Stranger Things’ made its debut on Netflix in 2016 and has won multiple accolades during its run.

People got fired over Hogwarts Legacy. Apologies when?

Despite the J.K. Rowling controversy, Hogwarts Legacy is one of the best-selling games in recent memory.

While some video game media outlets have tried to stir up outrage to kick off a widespread boycott, that obviously backfired. Hogwarts Legacy sold over 12 million copies in its first two weeks and conjured up $850 million in revenue for Warner Bros. Games. And yes, Rowling most definitely gets a slice of that.

The gaming media has mostly moved on from the faux outrage, save for sites like The Gamer. Headlines pertaining to Hogwarts Legacy are now almost exclusively about tips, tricks, gameplay, and updates. Very little of the conversation around the game centers on J.K. Rowling’s Twitter drama.

However, there’s been some collateral damage in the months and years leading up to the Harry Potter game’s release.

In their zeal to “cancel” Rowling (and possibly Hogwarts Legacy itself), some activist-minded gaming journos at Polygon and Kotaku tried to link the game’s lead designer Troy Leavitt to Gamergate. After the hit pieces saturated the news feeds, Leavitt stepped down from his position at Avalanche in early 2021.

More recently, one of the voice actors in the game was harassed by the Twitter outrage mob, despite having recorded his lines before Rowling ran afoul of that crowd. Sebastian Croft had to make a full-throated apology for his perceived ‘crime,’ and it’s still unclear where he stands with the stans.

Most heartbreakingly, the community manager for Limited Run Games, Kara Lynne, was terminated for simply tweeting that she was looking forward to playing Hogwarts Legacy. That tweet seemingly angered one lone activist (who has a long documented history of online harassment) and they pored through her tweets, finding one from seven years ago that kinda-sorta-but-not-really supported the termination of Lynne in their eyes.

So now that the game has broken records and proven to be a certifiable, undeniable hit with general audiences and that the same general public is simply stepping over the Rowling controversy… where are the apologies?

Honestly, where are the lawsuits?

The BBC was forced to make not one, but two public apologies for letting defamatory statements about J.K. Rowling slide.

(One of those apologies was on behalf of the editor-in-chief of The Gamer, and weirdly enough, it was the same podcast featuring a ClownfishTV.com contributor, Jakejames Lugo.)

I personally do not think that the companies that tossed their employees overboard to appease the (mostly inconsequential) Twitter outrage mob should get off the hook. People’s lives and livelihoods were wrongly destroyed over a stupid wizard video game.

How ironic it is that this game is being blamed by its detractors for destroying lives.

Dwayne Johnson Address Henry Cavill’s Untimely Exit As Superman

0

‘Hobbs & Shaw’ star Dwayne Johnson spent fifteen years developing ‘Black Adam,’ a film based on the DC Comics villain. Despite a cameo by Henry Cavill as Superman, the movie did not perform well at the box office. Its performance prompted DC Films Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran to go in a different direction with the superhero franchise. This will include a new actor to portray Clark Kent in the announced film ‘Superman: Legacy.’

Johnson addressed Henry Cavill’s untimely exit from the franchise in an interview with Variety.

“All that I can do, and all that we could do when we were making ‘Black Adam,’ was to put our best foot forward and surround ourselves with the best people and deliver the best movie we could,” the ‘Faster’ actor explained. “Our audience score was in the 90s. Critics took a couple shots, but that’s just the business of it.”

“It’s almost like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships and your head coach wins championships and then a new owner comes in and says, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going to go with somebody new,” he added.

Prior to the shift in agenda, Johnson had announced that the previously titled DCEU would be developing a future slate of films where Superman would square off against Black Adam. That film appears to no longer be in the works with the announcement of “DCU Chapter One: God and Monsters,” Gunn and Safran’s first film slate for the DCU.

Cavill had previously announced that he would return as Superman after a hiatus following ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’ A few months later, Gunn announced that a younger actor would be portraying the Last Son of Krypton on screen. Cavill instead will focus on an adaption of the table-top game ‘Warhammer 40,000’ that he will be executive producing and possibly starring in for Amazon Studios.

PlayStation 5 Sales Up in Japan and Catching Up to Nintendo Switch

On Wednesday, February February 8th, 2023, the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu shared the sales numbers of PlayStation 5 consoles in Japan. The information in the report was shared by a number of media outlets. The comparison to the number of consoles sold in the region was staggeringly higher than what was reported in February 2022. For many following the company and industry trends for the new year, Sony is having a great start to the new year.

For 2023, Famitsu shared that Japan saw over 350,000 PlayStation 5 consoles sold as of the time of reporting. That number is a huge 450% jump in total sales when compared to the previous year. Back in February 2022, Sony managed to only get over 65,000 consoles sold (the exact number being 65,772). A lot of factors may have come into play during the previous year, as it was the year following many global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the worldwide chip shortage. Both of which affect Sony and many other tech companies trying to get products made and shipped out to different regions.

How is this relevant to Nintendo Switch sales in Japan? These big numbers are very different than the previous year when comparing the two consoles being sold in the region. 2022 saw a massive amount of Nintendo Switch consoles sold to Japanese gamers, with the PlayStation 5 trailing in second place by a long mile. By the end of the year, nearly 5.3 million Nintendo Switch consoles were sold, while the PlayStation 5 only managed to sell around 942,000.

With PlayStation 5 selling very well in early February this year and lasting throughout the month, we might see the gap between PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch sales in Japan start to close even more. It’s difficult to say why this might be happening, but some have speculated that it could be due to the age of the Nintendo Switch, the release of more appealing PlayStation 5 games, and the novelty of the PlayStation console itself. For all we know, things can shift again as we move forward into the rest of 2023.

Are you happy that PlayStation 5 is selling well in Japan? Think that it’ll hit even bigger numbers by the end of the year? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Five Great Female Game Characters You Should Know

March is often a time to celebrate Women’s History Month, highlighting many aspects of history impacted by various women who pushed boundaries and made a positive change to the world around us. And while much of that is geared toward what goes on in the real world, gaming has its group of female characters that stand out in many of the series we love to play. Some of these have changed how we enjoy or view gaming in a significant way.

Even if you are someone who only plays only a small amount of games, chances are you’ve heard about some popular female video game characters that get brought up constantly. So let’s celebrate some of the characters in gaming that continue to make waves and remain relevant to the greater gaming community. Whether it’s those who stand against evil monsters, take their fights to the streets, or make us see the world through a different point of view; here are five female game characters you should definitely know about.

Chun-Li – Street Fighter

Not only is she often known as the strongest woman in the world, but Chun-Li is also the first lady of fighting games. First appearing in 1991 with Capcom’s Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior, Chun-Li was part of the original eight world warriors that helped shape the fighting game scene as we know it. Representing China in the Street Fighter tournament, Chun-Li is a martial artist that works for Interpol, trying to take down the evil organization known as Shadaloo. Her mission coincides with her personal motivation to avenge the death of her father at the hands of M. Bison.

Chun-Li is one of the first female characters that were playable in a fighting game. Her overall design and backstory was one of the big parts of making the game different, with a diverse roster of characters apart from other fighting games. Over the years, Chun-Li has remained incredibly popular and a staple of the Street Fighter series. She has made a number of appearances in various spinoffs and crossovers that featured Capcom characters, including Marvel vs. Capcom, Project X Zone, and Capcom vs. SNK.

The Boss – Metal Gear Solid

One of the more layered and complex characters in the Metal Gear Solid series isn’t Snake or Big Boss, but his mentor. Commonly just known as The Boss, she goes by other names as well including The Joy, Mercury Lady, and the Mother of Special Forces. The Boss taught everything that Snake knows before the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, giving him the tools he needs to survive and take on any mission given to him. However, a conspiracy involving the world’s superpowers and the Philosopher’s Legacy causes her to be on the opposite side of her student, putting the two at odds in a heartbreaking but action-packed story.

The Boss has a fabled history within the Metal Gear Solid universe. She not only played a significant role during World War 2 at the Battle of Normandy but also played roles in other historical events like the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba. She is a dedicated soldier that is the embodiment of patriotism, while also physically and mentally strong enough to lead the infamous Cobra unit. The Boss and her actions before and during the Metal Gear Solid games helped lay the foundation for many events that take place later on in the series.

Chloe – Uncharted

The Uncharted game are all about adventure and seeking hidden treasures throughout the world. One of the best-supporting characters that is a beloved fan favorite is Chloe Frazer. She first appeared in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves opposite Nathan Drake, but had an even bigger presence in the games that followed afterward. Chloe is a treasure hunter and thief for hire with a variety of skills that has given her a high degree of notoriety in the series. While she is a love interest of Nathan in the games, at times she also becomes a rival for him as they chase leads toward treasures.

While Uncharted 2 had Chloe being part of the action, later Uncharted games got to show Chloe as more than just another love interest. Uncharted The Lost Legacy has Chloe going on a quest for the tusk of Ganesh, where she runs into Nadine Ross and faces various mercenary groups across India. Chloe is a complex character that values her own needs and goals above anything else but still manages to have a heart when it really counts throughout the series. She is quick to take action and make a move when things get dangerous and dire for everyone involved.

Shanoa – Castlevania

When it comes to female heroes within the Castlevania series, there aren’t many who hold the name of Belmont. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t female heroes that uniquely stand alone with their own level of vampire-hunting goodness. Shanoa is the heroine of Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia that uses magical glyphs to battle the hordes of monsters under the control of Dracula’s minions. While the Belmont clan is absent from the world, the Order of Ecclesia is tasked with keeping monsters at bay and preventing them from reviving Dracula.

Shanoa is a powerful magic user that was trained at a young age to help destroy Dracula as one of the Order of Ecclesia’s female warriors. The glyphs that appear on her body allow her to use different abilities, ranging from melee and projectile attacks to more powerful magical spells. She is both driven by her goal to vanquish Dracula and strong-willed when facing adversity, although during the game she struggles with amnesia that goes away after rediscovering her past by the end. While the series is often dominated by whip-wielding male heroes against the dark lord, Shanoa is a fresh breath of variety in the ongoing action series.

Bastila Shan – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

When it comes to Star Wars games, one of the most beloved is Knights of the Old Republic. It’s a game that not only helped improve the original Xbox library but gave us some of the best characters in the Star Wars franchise for video games. Bastila Shan is a Jedi knight who is not only devoted to the light side of the force but helps save the galaxy from a massive threat caused by the Sith during the days of the Old Republic.

In the game’s story, Bastila helps guide Revan, the player’s main character, on their path as a Jedi and quest to find the Star Forge, a powerful tool used to create the most powerful in the galaxy. Bastila also has the force unique ability called Battle Meditation, which allows her to boost the morale and overall abilities of an entire army. She was also incredibly skilled with a lightsaber, often shown wielding a double-bladed lightsaber and using a wide variety of other force powers in combat.

Although Bastila isn’t the central character in the Knights of the Old Republic games, her force powers and reputation have become very popular. Her story is almost a staple to most Star Wars projects that are related to the Old Republic timeline, with many referencing her story or powers in some way. What was interesting about Bastila in the original Knights of the Old Republic was the high level of detail in her backstory and lines of dialogue that can be heard by talking with her at various points of the game. Depending on the actions of the player, her affiliation and outcome in the plot would also change, whether you chose to be more like a Jedi or a Sith.

So who are your favorite female video game characters? Which are the games you love to go back to often and replay? Tell us about all of it in the comments!

Hasbro has gotten hella weird.

In 1986, Transformers were literally killing each other while a heavy metal soundtrack blared in the background.

In 2023, Transformers are having a heart-to-heart with children about respecting pronouns.

Speaking of pronouns, a Hasbro rep required that middle-aged adult men give their pronouns before being able to ask a question about G.I. Joe figures at a convention.

Hasbro claims that they dropped the plastic from their packaging to help the environment, but they’ve seemingly been caught dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars of unopened Magic the Gathering cards into a landfill.

Hasbro claimed that “collectors will love” the plastic-free packaging, but it’s also lead to a litany of complaints about a lack of quality control from the collecting community.

Dungeons & Dragons has seen a resurgence in popularity due in part to Stranger Things and the character of Eddie Munson.

But according to some at Wizards of the Coast, guys that look like Eddie Munson can’t leave the hobby fast enough.

Speaking of WotC, they’ve beaten the “inclusive community” drum for the better part of a decade. They’ve bent over backward to appease the new breed of Dungeons & Dragons players who probably think Eddie Munson was a racist.

And then Hasbro stabbed that same community in the back with their draconian OGL 1.1 plans.

Remember when they wanted to drop the “Mister” from Potato Head, and then promptly walked it back after severe backlash?

Remember that ex-Hasbro employee who said that the company was actively trying to indoctrinate kids into “wokeness,” and was terminated for doing so?

Remember how Hasbro saw its revenue drop off a cliff and had to lay off 15% of its workforce?

Maybe it’s all interconnected. Maybe it’s not.

But my armchair observation is that Hasbro has gotten hella weird.

NECA Reveals Gargoyles’ Elisa Maza and David Xanatos Figures

Elisa Maza and David Xanatos finally make their appearance in NECA’s Gargoyles action figure line. Both figures are scheduled for a July release date.

Maybe it’s just me, but Xanatos’s head sculpt looks weird. The animated version looked much more like Jonathan Frakes than his physical manifestation. The alternate grimacing face is a lot better. Maza, however, is spot-on, and the figure looks fantastic with the optional flowing hair.

Something else odd is how NECA has chosen to do the arms. The double joints at the elbow make Xanatos look like he has robotic arms. Maybe it’s time to invest in seamless limbs like other companies have.

I am grateful that NECA includes accessories for previously released characters with these two new figures. The other option was releasing an accessories pack, which I always disliked. Xanatos comes packed with optional cloaked wings for Demona, and Maza has a pair for Brooklyn.

The sinister billionaire David Xanatos comes with the following:

  • Alternate head sculpt
  • 2 Pairs of interchangeable hands
  • Eye of Odin necklace
  • Laser blaster
  • Blast effect
  • Floppy disc
  • Folded wings for Demona

Elisa Maza comes with the following:

  • Interchangeable head part
  • Interchangeable hair part
  • Police badge
  • Flashlight
  • Cagney the cat
  • Brooklyn’s folded wings

We’ve covered Gargoyles action figures before over at our sister site, Pirates and Princesses. However, the last Gargoyles figure we saw announced by NECA was the army-builder Steel Clan Robot.

Now that most of the main cast has been taken care of, who should be next on NECA’s list? Which characters are you still hoping to see make it into this line? Let us know in the comments section below!

EU Telecom Companies May Fine Google For Broadband Usage

0

Another day, another potential nail in Google’s coffin is revealed. EU telecommunication companies apparently want the tech giant to start paying for the broadband it uses in Europe.

According to CNBC, EU regulators could be pressured into charging companies like Google for the traffic. If telecom companies are the ones servicing and installing the backbone Google uses, it only makes sense that the Big G pays for the usage. However, Google isn’t the only company the telecom providers are targeting.

Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Netflix are all pushing data through copper and fiber networks, and the fees would help businesses like Deutsche Telekom improve and innovate existing systems. Of course, this isn’t being met with open arms by those who would pay the “tax.”

Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters believes the alluded-to fees would adversely affect customers. He may be right. If Netflix and Amazon were suddenly asked to pay by gigabits or terabits used, these fees would be passed on to the consumers using said companies’ services.

Or, adversely, the telecom companies will start raising their rates in order to account for the needed improvements to the infrastructure. If Google doesn’t pay, the customers will.

Category cable isn’t getting any cheaper. The same can be said for fiber spools until we hit a major recession. CAT6 and CAT6a cable has shot up considerably over the past nine months, with distributors sending out bulletins announcing the price increases every few weeks.

The rising prices are across the board when it comes to technology. The compounded issues of the chip shortage, labor shortage, and the pandemic left many companies scrambling to cover a fraction of backorders. In the end, the cost gets funneled along to us, the customer base.

However, some people think the entire issue could be solved by retooling the EU’s regulations. The European Commission’s head of internal markets, Thierry Brenton, believes “the imbalance is not down to Big Tech, it’s not down to streamers, and it’s not down to telcos. It’s down largely to the old, out-of-date regulatory environment.

Something has to give, but how long will the red tape keep consumers from seeing improvements across the board? Will Google and the others push back? Let us know your thoughts below.

Review: Scream VI – Legacy Horror in New York City

The Scream has had many ups and downs over the years, but its impact on horror cinema and pop culture cannot be denied. As much as we like to poke fun at the many horror movie clichés and occasional cheesiness of these films, their influence helped shape the evolution of the horror movie genre in the years that followed. Scream VI is a movie that takes pride in its legacy and embraces many of the staples that built the foundation it stands upon. Luckily for everyone watching it does so with some genuinely solid performances and shocking moments that make for a fun runtime. If you’re not a fan of the Scream series of 90s slasher movies then you might not see the big deal in many things that happen in it, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find something to like about Scream VI.

Unlike its predecessors, Scream VI takes the series to a new and bigger location, the streets of New York City. But that’s not the only thing this movie does differently from previous Scream films. The opening sequence is a great setup and fake-out that plays with your expectations, leading to some surprising moments and build-up for the rest of the film. Just when you think the film is going in one direction, Scream VI takes a hard turn towards something interesting that will keep you intrigued. It’s a solid example of how subverting expectations can go right for a film, where the twists and turns make sense and offer a good payoff for everyone watching.

The main plot of the film follows Sam Carpenter and her sister Tara, along with their group of roommates that share an apartment in New York while attending college. The sisters are located there following the events of Scream V, where Sam was the survivor of the Woodsboro legacy murders. While the general public believes she framed the tragedy, someone wearing the Ghostface costume begins killing in New York City and is attempting to frame Sam for it.

The mystery that unfolds throughout the film showcases a bolder Ghostface that relentlessly pursues Sam and her sister, while also taking out many other characters. The body count is high, with some gruesome moments that don’t go over the top but will manage to make some people squirm. How it all comes to an end is a big twist that not only highlights much of the Scream series but manages to build upon its legacy with clever ideas.

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega play Sam and Tara Carpenter in the film with what feels like genuine chemistry as sisters. There are emotional moments in-between the horror chases and killings that build up the history they have and the mental toll they each suffer from their past. And while both women get some big moments to shine towards the end that borderline on the absurd, the earlier parts of the film allow them to showcase some great acting between each other and the rest of their costars. The film is about the relationship these two sisters have with each other as much as it is about their family and the previous Ghostface killer tragedies.

The rest of the cast isn’t as memorable or interesting as Sam and Tara are, with a few exceptions that become surprising by the end of the film. The legacy characters from older Scream films, played by Courtney Cox and Hayden Panettiere, do have some genuinely good moments that are important to the big plot. Things long-time Scream fans have wanted to see finally get addressed here. The rest of the cast does end up feeling like their personalities revolve around one specific trait to round off the group. You have the horror movie buff, the hot boyfriend, the pretty girl, and so on and so forth. It feels very much like a checklist from the earlier Scream films and other 90s horror movies of the era.

When the body count starts to rise, you can almost pick out who may or may not get caught by Ghostface, but the film manages to switch things up a few times to keep things interesting. Some of the decisions made by different characters can come off as boneheaded or stupid, but it’s usually followed by something that makes up for it with a great payoff that keeps the momentum of the film going.

Unfortunately, some viewers may be disappointed by how Scream VI rounds off its ending with who survives. There are spots where some can say Scream VI wasn’t bold enough to go further with certain characters, while others may feel it went too far with specific events. Part of slasher movies in the 90s were the extremes during different parts of the story, which the movie does attempt to a degree of success. Instead of coming off as trying too hard to be like what was, it instead feels like a smart homage that makes sense within the context of the movie’s plot at the right time.

Although Scream VI does have a lot of nods and fan service to the entire series, there are a few things that it does stumble around. Series heroine and a staple of the Scream movies Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell in previous Scream films, is nowhere to be found. Much of this is due to the actress not coming to an agreement to be in the film, which is a shame since many fans wanted to see her show up.

There is a throwaway line that says her character went into hiding following events of the previous film, which manages to keep the door open for her to return in another sequel. With Scream VI so heavy on revering the origins of the series and the legacy that has been built over the years, it’s a shame that it couldn’t accomplish getting the final girl who started it all to be part of it.

Scream VI is a good entry to the Scream series that will make fans who have watched since the beginning happy. But even if you’re not a fan of these movies or never had the chance to watch them, you’ll at least have a good slasher movie that can shock and scare you into enjoyment. The action, new ideas, and crazy twists can be thrilling to watch. It’s definitely not the highest point of the series and fumbles a few things that could’ve made it better, but it’s far from the worst entry of the series.

Have you watched Scream VI yet? What is your favorite scary movie to watch alone or with friends? Tell us about it in the comments down below!
