Charles Martinet Stepping Back as Voice of Mario for Nintendo

For many people who grew up with Nintendo games in the 90s, the voice of Mario has always been done by Charles Martinet. Since the release of Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 back in 1996, Charles has portrayed the voice of the iconic character, going on to voice Mario and many other characters in various Super Mario games. For Nintendo fans, there is no other more fitting to play the voice of Mario in any game released by Nintendo. But it looks like that will be coming to an end, as Nintendo announced a coming change that marks the end of an era.

In a post released by Nintendo over Twitter, the company released a statement announcing that Charles Martinet will be stepping back from voicing Mario in future games. In addition to that, Charles will instead be moving into a new role as a Mario Ambassador. As far as what that new role might mean, no details were given. Nintendo went on to praise the work they’ve done with Charles over the years in many video games starring the red and blue plumber.

“It has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank him and celebrate him…” Charles himself went on to retweet and share a short message about the announcement shortly after it went live. “My new Adventure begins! You are all Number One in my heart! #whooohooo!”

Although it hasn’t gone live just yet, Nintendo did say that Charles would be releasing a special video discussing everything, which will include Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Hopefully, the video will give some insight into what comes next for Charles Martinet as Mario Ambassador. Following the announcement, no details about who might be the next one to step into the shoes as the voice of Mario. After the announcement, it was confirmed that Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be the first Mario game from Nintendo that will not have Charles Martinet doing the voice of Mario.

Since the release of Super Mario 64, Charles has been the voice of Mario in nearly every video game release from Nintendo that included Mario. This includes spin-offs of the Mario series like Luigi’s Mansion, as well as other major releases from Nintendo like the Super Smash Bros. games. Charles was also the voice of other Mario series characters like Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and many others.

What do you think of the news about Charles Martinet stepping back from doing the voice of Mario in Nintendo games? What was the first Super Mario game that you ever played that had Charles doing the voice of Mario? Tell us everything down below in the comment section and let your voice be heard!

Dell Slapped With $6.5M Fine For False Advertising

0

Have you ever wondered if the “deals” you see on Dell’s website are real? If you’re a customer of the PC company in the Land Downunder, then you might have been scammed.

Thankfully, this scummy behavior appears to be centralized in Australia. Although, the practice is probably being implemented all over the place.

A report from Ars Technica has informed us that Dell’s Australian branch is expected to pay almost $6.5 million for a fine resulting from “making false and misleading representations on its website about discount prices for add-on computer monitors.” The number of monitors sold using this slimy tactic wasn’t small, either. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) claims 5,300 Dell monitors underwent misleading price fixing.

Dell has been accused and found guilty of tricking customers into thinking that the “slashed” prices they found while purchasing PCs were not, in fact, the actual price of the monitors.

To be fair, that looks like one heck of a deal. I would have probably picked up a new monitor if there was such a huge alleged discount. No wonder Dell was able to dupe so many customers.

As a long-time Dell customer, I’ve noticed weirdness with the company’s prices here in the States. Deals appear to be oddly arbitrary, and the same item can sometimes change price on a daily basis. While this may be y normal thing, I sometimes wonder how often a monitor, laptop, or desktop’s price is overly inflated to make a “deal” seem better than it really is.

The most considerable discount I’ve seen on monitors over the past few years has been roughly $300 on older models. Maybe I’ve been tricked, too?

Have you experienced any strangeness when it comes to Dell’s sales and prices? Let us know in the comments section below.

GTA V AI Mod Taken Down by Take-Two

Mods for popular video games are a common occurrence, with fans creating their own additions for the games they love to play. But some mods for specific games tend to be more ambitious than others. As is the case with mods that are made for games like Grand Theft Auto V, which can get pretty interesting and impressive. But not everyone is a fan of mods, specifically, the companies that publish the games they are made for. And one mod may have gone a bit too far for publisher Take-Two.

A mod for Grand Theft Auto V called Sentient Streets was recently the focus of ire from Take-Two. The mod in question uses AI technology to generate conversation dialogue for NPCs found in the game, which can change up a lot of the conversations you hear while roaming around. The mod was created by YouTube user Bloc and attracted a lot of attention after being reported by various gaming websites. This got the attention of Take-Two and was taken down from YouTube.

The creator of the mod was very disappointed by the actions of Take-Two, sharing a blog post after videos of the mod in action were hit by a DMCA takedown. “Yesterday, Take-Two Interactive hit my channel with a copyright strike about my video on GTA V mod and YouTube removed the video immediately without giving me any chance to explain myself. The reason for this takedown shown by Take-Two Interactive on YouTube was that I used their software (Grand Theft Auto V) in the video. No one from Take-Two Interactive contacted and ask me anything prior to this, they just took down the video out of nowhere.”

Despite being reached out for comment by various outlets, Take-Two has not given any statement about the mod takedown. It’s not the first time a Grand Theft Auto game has had some controversy related to fan projects and mods surrounding it. In the past, the company has gone as far as to send private investigators out in pursuit of taking down fan mods. With the Sentient Streets mod, the involvement of AI may have been the sticking point for Take-Two.

“Perhaps this occurred automatically, but the evidence suggests a deliberate manual DMCA takedown request from them… I also didn’t get any response back. It looks like they are just attacking the mod from all fronts… Knowing that large corporations can issue strikes based on arbitrary reasons, which can cause your work to go in vain in moments, is also discouraging, to say the least…”

What do you think of Take-Two going after fan mods for Grand Theft Auto V? Do you think the involvement of AI with this fan mod could’ve been what prompted the company to act quickly? Do you still play GTA V now on any platform? Let us know your thoughts about everything in the comment section below!

Overwatch 2: Director Responds to Steam Review Bombing

Overwatch 2 has had many ups and downs since its release. The community of Blizzard fans who frequently boot up Overwatch 2 has been vocal on a number of issues about the game, including the new Invasion content and Season 6 updates. Since going live, many players have taken to forums and Steam threads to voice their opinion about the game, which resulted in a wave of negative reviews and comments. Despite the backlash from the Overwatch community, Blizzard has been silent and given no response. But that changed on Friday with an unexpected response from an unlikely source.

Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, finally shared a response to the overwhelming backlash and negative reviews of the game on its Steam page, shared on the official Overwatch blog. The number of reviews shared on there from fans led to Overwatch 2 garnering a “mostly negative” display and becoming one of the most negatively reviewed games on Steam to date. Aaron’s statement touched on what it’s been like seeing the response from the community and how much he understood why it was happening.

“…Although being review-bombed isn’t a fun experience, it’s been great to see lots of new players jump into Overwatch 2 for the first time. Our goal with Overwatch 2 has been to make the game more accessible than ever for more people than ever before. Many of the reviews on Steam mention the cancellation of the much larger component of PvE that was announced in 2019 as one of their primary reasons for dissatisfaction with the game. I get that. That announcement was about an ambitious project that we ultimately couldn’t deliver…”

Aaron went on in the blog post to discuss some stats about the game since launching Overwatch 2, as well as how the team learned much when launching some of the latest new content. “If we can’t turn back the clock, then what can we do? We can keep adding to and improving Overwatch 2. That is how we move forward. This means more maps, heroes, game modes, missions, stories, events, cool cosmetics, and features – an ever-expanding, evolving, and improving game. This is the future of Overwatch. One where we will continually create and innovate on what is making the game great now for the players who are playing now.”

For many, there was a lot of disappointment with Overwatch 2 after PvE content that was initially planned was canceled. Much of the excitement about the launch of the sequel was the potential for PvE content to become a big deal among players. But despite changes being made, a lot of people continue to play Overwatch 2 online, even with so many negative reviews of the game being passed around. Hopefully, things will change going forward as more content is released and Overwatch 2 receives more updates. With any luck, it’ll change the outlook of it to the community who are still very passionate about the game.

What do you think of Overwatch 2 and the statement from the game’s director? Do you still play Overwatch 2 online? What kind of things do you want to see Blizzard add to the game? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments!

A Premium Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Figure Stomps Ashore In 2024

The next Ghostbusters film may be on hold indefinitely as the writer’s strike continues, but that won’t stop the collectibles from hitting the market! Today we learned about an upcoming premium Stay Puft Marshmallow Man figure from Star Ace!

Standing roughly 12″ tall, this manifestation of Gozer features some items we don’t typically see in Stay Puft figures: a fabric tunic and an interchangeable cross-eyed angry face. Was this face even in the 1984 classic? Stay Puft’s alternate head looks like it came from the recently released short film rather than the first Ghostbusters movie.

Regardless of the optional head, this Stay Puft Marshmallow Man looks good. Hopefully, it won’t suffer from the discoloring problem we saw with the Mattel version years ago.

The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man may be pre-ordered for $153.99 directly from Star Ace or for $194.99 from the Big Bad Toy Store. He is expected to come ashore during the fourth quarter of 2023.

Crafted with utmost attention to detail, this soft vinyl rendition of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man captures the essence of the mischievous and larger-than-life character. His legs, arms and head rotate allowing for multiple poses. The figure features the mixed media elements of the fabric collar and necktie and standing at an impressive 30cm tall this figure is a fun and authentic look at the classic movie monster.

The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man will come with the following:

  • Two pairs of interchangeable hands
  • Interchangeable jolly and angry heads
  • Fabric sailor’s tunic

Superman Goes On A New Quest To Try Japanese Cuisine In New Manga

Superman is on a quest for peace, but this time for a taste of Japanese cuisine. DC Comics did a collaboration with Kodansha to bring ‘Superman VS. Meshi,’ a manga following the Man of Steel as he explores Japan for the best dishes. Hey, even Superman needs a break from the Justice League every now and then.

DC Comics said on their website, “‘Superman vs. Meshi’ is a slice-of-life manga by Satoshi Miyagawa and Kai Kitago that’s now getting published in English. (The title roughly translates to “Superman vs. Food.”) The delightful comic takes the Man of Steel to Japan to try out the local restaurant chains. He learns not just about traditional dishes and their flavors, but also how to order them.”

Miyagawa is magaka behind the science comedy ‘Uchuu Senkan Tiramisù (Space Battle Ship Tiramisù).’ At the same time, Kitago did the story and artwork for the humorous slice-of-life story ‘Good Morning Leon.’

“A self-proclaimed addict of meals like yakitori—grilled chicken on a skewer—Superman gets so excited when he tries some particularly delicious new Japanese food that his powers spontaneously activate. He also chides himself for acting like an excitable Kansas farm boy, an adorable trait that I hope makes it into the mainstream DC Universe,” DC continues.

The comic book company added, “One of my favorite things about Superman vs. Meshi is how Kitago wonderfully captures the likenesses of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder for his Clark and Lois. I can’t stop imagining the iconic Superman of the 1980s closing his eyes with a contented sigh as he takes a bite of his lunch. The rest of the Justice League look more similar to their recent film counterparts, a memorable mix of past and present.”

The first three chapters are currently available on the digital library DC Universe Infinite with the complete volume one being released in print on September 5, 2023.

They revealed the cover for the English version:

Review: Blue Beetle – Heartfelt Stumbling Hero

Superhero films can sometimes fall into a familiar formula that gets tiring for some audiences, despite how much it works. It can be difficult trying to mix things up enough to make the same kind of story feel unique and different. This is the hurdle that Blue Beetle finds itself in, both as a superhero film and as another entry into the cinematic universe of DC comic book heroes. Although there is a strong focus on family relationships and overcoming hardship to become stronger in life, awkward moments and humor that often miss prevent this movie from being something truly special. There’s a stable foundation in here that can work out well, but it all never fully comes together to form something great.

Blue Beetle follows a young college graduate named Jamie Reyes and his family. Jaime wants to get a job working for a major company in order to help his family get out of their struggle living in the lower class. But constant setbacks and hardship keep making things difficult. That is until he is forced into guarding a mysterious piece of alien technology called the Scarab, which bonds with Jaime and turns him into the Blue Beetle. Because of this, Jaime and his family are thrown into danger by the Kord Industries, led by Victoria Kord. She wants to use the technology of the Scarab to create weapons and change the world with the help of the OMAC project, made from hijacked technology.

The best parts of Blue Beetle are the close bonds between Jaime and his family members. The conversations between him and his father, his sister, and even his uncle Rudy touch on very emotional points that will stand out. One of the best is when it’s Jaime and his father sitting down and discussing how to get through tough times through perseverance and patience. It’s a showcase of solid acting from Xolo Mariduena and Damian Alcazar. These kinds of moments are complimented by some of the action in the film. There’s a good amount of fighting with Jaime as Blue Beetle against a group of soldiers, which looks pretty good.

But what about the Blue Beetle suit itself, does it look good overall? There are moments when Jaime as Blue Beetle looks very good, especially when he’s in combat or when there’s a blue lightning effect around the suit. That’s when the effects are at their best. Some people will easily compare the design of the suit to Marvel’s Iron Man suit, which shares many similarities. They don’t have the exact same abilities, but their weapons are somewhat alike. But when Blue Beetle is standing still or when there’s no lightning around him, the suit does look a lot cheaper than one would expect. You can notice the rubber on the suit in some shots that take away from the illusion of it being an alien suit covering Jaime’s body. With better framing in some scenes, these imperfections could’ve been hidden better.

The movie is also held back from being fantastic by moments where the pacing feels mishandled. Some scenes will drag on for way too long with jokes that don’t always feel like they are landing, often coming off as either too cheesy or awkward than funny. The beginning of the film takes a while to get past much of the setup, with it feeling like a long time before Jaime comes across the Scarab and the Blue Beetle action starts to rev up. There also isn’t a lot of time to make sense of how Jaime becomes adept with his skills in the Blue Beetle suit, or his connection with the Scarab itself. The plot almost rushes through in order to get Jaime to the point it needs him for a big fight scene. And while the battle looks good, you’ll have to often forget that Jaime hasn’t had the Scarab for very long to be as good as he is.

You might also find yourself not connecting too much with the villain of the film. Although Blue Beetle doesn’t have as iconic of a rogues’ gallery as many other DC heroes, the bad guys in this film feel shallow. Raoul Trujillo plays Conrad Carapax, who ends up getting a suit that can rival Blue Beetle’s armor but doesn’t have an interesting backstory. Much of the details are dumped at the very end, which feels like a massive cop-out. The real villain of the story is Victoria Kord, played by Susan Sarandon, who has a connection to the original Blue Better Ted Kord. But her presence and overall impact feel just as shallow as Carapax, despite much of the story taking place because of her actions with Kord Industries. This isn’t going to be a movie that gives DC fans a great new villain in cinema, which is a shame for a hero that is definitely likable.

Something that will often feel like a misstep in the film is the humor, which doesn’t always hit the jokes as well as it probably should. There are some jokes that have great timing and work well within a given scenario that involve George Lopez as Uncle Rudy, but they are far and few between. The best jokes often imply Rudy’s conspiracy theorist ways or even how the Scarab may have gotten into Jaime when it chose him. But the humor that really doesn’t work is when things go far on the cheesy side, such as the moments involving Jaime’s grandmother and her implied history as a revolutionary fighter. Seeing her pick up a giant Gatling gun as a very old lady, on top of knowing how to storm a high-tech military facility, often feels like too far a leap in logic for the story. It’s played for laughs in context, but may not be that funny for most viewers.

Much of the misses in humor for Blue Beetle can also be attributed to the whiplash tone shifts between various scenes. There will be very serious emotional or action moments that are placed next to outlandish comedic moments within the same scene. It can make things somewhat confusing for the overall tone the movie is aiming for, with some action moments or dialogue losing some of its appeal. It can feel inconsistent with a lot of what the movie establishes at the start. Most of the beginning will feel lighter in tone, only later to shift by having a character get killed behind a door with a giant blood splatter.

Other moments end up making certain points seem irrelevant. Jaime will make a point of the Scarab not killing anyone at first, but then the movie shows his family nonchalantly killing soldiers by having a giant mech impale them. Some might not be too bothered by this, but many will definitely feel the shifts in tone and think that the movie really doesn’t know what kind of direction it wants to go with.

The movie also has a very strong emphasis on displaying aspects of Jaime’s Latino culture in various ways, more specifically Mexican heritage. It’s done well in how it helps reinforce the ideas of strong family bonds and going through hardships together, without being too distracted from the superhero story it’s trying to tell. There are a lot of scenes that use subtitles for when characters speak to each other in Spanish, which makes moments between them a little more authentic and deep.

When things get dire for Jaime and his family, there are exchanges between various family members that have a greater impact and solid delivery because they are said in Spanish or switch between languages mid-conversation. Unfortunately, some scenes feel like they’re missing subtitles when a character makes a statement or says a phrase in Spanish when previous scenes were subtitled. It doesn’t happen often, but it is noticeable when the movie follows that format early on.

Blue Beetle is a decent film that may or may not resonate with fans of DC comic book heroes. If you know the character and the source material for this version of Blue Beetle, then you will find enjoyable aspects of this movie. Jaime is a likable hero as Blue Beetle and his relationship with his family is at the heart of the story, which can stand out in good ways. Although not a terrible film, the missteps it has will stand out at one point or another, especially if you don’t like the tonal shifts or humor. This isn’t going to drastically change one’s stance on the quality of DC movies, but it can still be enjoyable to watch for those looking for a new superhero to follow.

What do you think about Blue Beetle? Are you going to watch this movie any time soon? What other DC heroes do you want to see get their own movie? Let us know your thoughts about everything down below in the comment section!

Review: Knock-Off LEGO ‘Short Circuit’ Johnny 5

0

There are a surprising number of Johnny 5 “interlocking brick” sets. Each Short Circuit robot is drastically different, and some are roughly the scale of a LEGO Technic kit. However, they’re all far more affordable than an official set would be. The one we’re reviewing today is $17.99.

Johnny 5 comprises 370 pieces, many of which you’ll probably have encountered in official LEGO models. The skill level required is pretty low, as shown on the box. I don’t doubt that kids 6+ should be able to get this thing together with a few issues.

If we had not seen the box, we would not have known right away that this was not an official LEGO kit—the manual and how the parts are bagged match the style the legendary toy company used.

The full-color manual also makes the same annoying jumps in assembly that LEGO has been known to do occasionally. There are also far fewer spare parts left over at the end. We had two tread links and a single small tubular joint piece.

There are only two significant issues encountered when putting Johnny 5 together. The joint connections in some key areas are way too loose compared to LEGO’s friction joints. The lack of friction makes Johnny 5’s right arm incapable of being posed. It flops down while his left one stays in whatever position we put it in.

Issue number two is the laser. It is connected to a rod using a part we typically see as a “hot dog” or “sausage” in other kits. It’s very flimsy and snaps off if bumped. The laser should have been mounted on a ball joint similar to that in Johnny 5’s waist connection.

Besides those annoyances, the end product looks like Short Circuit‘s famous robot. The price and quality are hard to beat, especially when there’s no official alternative if you’re a fan of the movie. I’d 100% suggest this.

As expected from these “totally not LEGO” kits, the box lacks a company’s name. Amazon says Vonando makes these; however, web addresses on the back of the box go nowhere, and the various corporate entities appear nowhere during a cursory Google search.

Vonando sells two totally different versions of Johnny 5 at two different prices. So, who knows who makes these kits?

Microsoft to Shut Down The XBOX 360 Store Next Year!

0

Microsoft knows how to kick XBOX fans in the balls. Last month, the company announced that XBOX Live was being rebranded and rolled into Game Pass. Now we’re learning that the XBOX 360 Store is being shuttered in 2024.

The official goodbye to the nearly 20-year-old shop will happen on July 29th, 2024. Existing purchases will not be affected by this change. However, if you’ve been eyeing some DLC for an older title, you’d better buy it soon:

  • On July 29th, 2024, Xbox will stop supporting the ability to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com)
  • Related to this change, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360, which means TV and movie content will no longer be viewable on your Xbox 360 after July 29th, 2024.

Multiplayer, at least for games not affected by the shuttering of 3rd party servers (EA, Ubisoft, Activision), will also be unaffected:

Even after July 2024, you will still be able to play games and connect with friends through multiplayer on the games you purchased, as long as the publisher still supports the online servers. You can still save your games and progress to the cloud, and if you choose to continue any of those available games on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, those cloud saves will transfer over.

Microsoft has opened a support page specifically for this issue that should answer any other issues XBOX owners may have. Considering MS has delisted several games I’ve owned that never became backward compatible with the XBOX One, my only hope is to buy a used XBOX 360 and try to recover them. These games include the X-MEN Arcade game, Marvel VS Capcom 1 & 2, and the High Moon Studios Transformers titles.

This change comes fast on the heels of the news that Microsoft would implement a strike and suspension system targeted at online harassers.
