Microsoft to Shut Down The XBOX 360 Store Next Year!

Microsoft knows how to kick XBOX fans in the balls. Last month, the company announced that XBOX Live was being rebranded and rolled into Game Pass. Now we’re learning that the XBOX 360 Store is being shuttered in 2024.

The official goodbye to the nearly 20-year-old shop will happen on July 29th, 2024. Existing purchases will not be affected by this change. However, if you’ve been eyeing some DLC for an older title, you’d better buy it soon:

  • On July 29th, 2024, Xbox will stop supporting the ability to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (
  • Related to this change, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360, which means TV and movie content will no longer be viewable on your Xbox 360 after July 29th, 2024.

Multiplayer, at least for games not affected by the shuttering of 3rd party servers (EA, Ubisoft, Activision), will also be unaffected:

Even after July 2024, you will still be able to play games and connect with friends through multiplayer on the games you purchased, as long as the publisher still supports the online servers. You can still save your games and progress to the cloud, and if you choose to continue any of those available games on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, those cloud saves will transfer over.

Microsoft has opened a support page specifically for this issue that should answer any other issues XBOX owners may have. Considering MS has delisted several games I’ve owned that never became backward compatible with the XBOX One, my only hope is to buy a used XBOX 360 and try to recover them. These games include the X-MEN Arcade game, Marvel VS Capcom 1 & 2, and the High Moon Studios Transformers titles.

This change comes fast on the heels of the news that Microsoft would implement a strike and suspension system targeted at online harassers.
