New Netflix ‘Castlevania’ Series Focuses on Richter Belmont (But Netflix Needs to Brush Up on Castlevania Lore.)

The Netflix animated series Castlevania will be getting a spinoff soon. That spinoff will star none other than Richter Belmont and Maria Renard, and will likely cover plot point from two of the most popular games in the entire franchise — Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night.

Confusingly, many media outlets are leading with some variation of “New Castlevania Will Take Place During the French Revolution.” How boring!

Then again, maybe many of the pop culture outlets covering the new Castlevania series don’t know much about Castlevania lore… including Netflix themselves.

Netflix Geeked posted a tweet saying that Richter Belmont is the son of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades.

This, of course, is not the case. Richter is a descendant of Trevor Belmont. And there were several other notable vampire hunters named Belmont in-between Trevor and Richter, including Christopher and Simon.

Netflix was publicly corrected by Samuel Deats, a director on the Castlevania series, and released a corrected version of the tweet.

ANYWAY, it’ll be interesting to see where they go with the as-of-yet untitled follow-up series.

From Deadline

While Castlevania, based on the classic Konami video game, came to an end, the world it created is living on. As Deadline reported in April, Netflix is going forward a new anime series set in the same Castlevania universe with an entirely new cast of characters.

Today, as part of Netflix Geeked’s inaugural Geeked Week, the team behind Castlevania unveiled the new series, created in partnership with Kevin Kolde’s Project 51 Productions with showrunner and executive producer Clive Bradley.

Serving as executive producers, Kolde and Bradley will lead the new series, which is centered on Richter Belmont — a descendant of Castlevania characters Trevor and Sypha — and set against the backdrop of the French Revolution.

Powerhouse Animation will continue to partner on the new Castlevania series as the animation studio with Sam and Adam Deats directing.

Here’s hoping they eventually cover Castlevania: Bloodlines, which takes place during World War I.

‘The Green Knight’ Director Breaks Down Adapting The Arthurian Epic Poem

Composed in the fourteenth century, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is one of the most popular epic poems to come out of the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
The story follows Sir Gawain after he is given the opportunity to behead the Green Knight on the condition that the latter can do the same to Arthur’s knight. His journey involves temptation, tests of courage, and encountering mortal enemies.
Adapted for the silver screen twice before, ‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ director David Lowery decided to try his hand at adapting it with ‘Lion’ actor Dev Patel portraying Sir Gaiwan.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lowery discussed the process of filming ‘The Green Knight’ for A24.
“The finished movie is far bigger than what we set out to make,” Lowery said. “We wanted a film that felt as epic as Lord of the Rings but was completely unique in the way the story was told.”
Lowery explained that he had read the poem in college and was reminded of it when he was filming 2018’s ‘A Ghost Story’ when he thought about making a fantasy adventure.
“I was thinking, Maybe I could do something with a character on a horse, going on a quest. So instantly, I just thought about the various Arthurian quests, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight instantly came to mind,” he said. “It had been at that point probably 20 years since I had read it, so I ordered a copy off Amazon and started reading it, and I just started writing it as I was reading it.”
Lowery discussed how the themes of courage and loyalty ring true today with those virtue questions ringing true to him.
“And the idea that he would knowingly embark upon this quest, knowing that he was probably going to die at the end of it, because that was the right thing to do, based on the code of conduct of the day – that was really meaningful,” he explained.
“I felt that there was something modern about that, the way that can be twisted to reflect what is often perceived as valuable in our culture today,” Lowery continued. “It was hard for me to ever put that in words because talking about codes of chivalry as they apply to medieval lore, it doesn’t really hold water today. The idea of the beheading game, it’s really hard to put that in a script and have it make sense to a modern audience.”
He added, “Yet once you embraced that concept, it really had a relevance that I felt was worth digging into. And hopefully, it resonates with audiences when they see it, even if they don’t quite know why it’s resonating.”
‘The Green Knight’ is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 30, 2021.

With the Keanu Reeves character John Wick, it all started with a puppy. For Rob, an upcoming character played by Nicolas Cage, it is all about a pig.
In the upcoming revenge thriller ‘Pig,’ Cage plays a man who searches for truffles near his isolated home with a pet pig that he can summon with a whistle. When his animal companion goes missing, Rob has to go find it.

The synopsis explains that Cage plays “a reclusive truffle hunter in Oregon whose prize hunting pig is kidnapped, forcing him to return to old stomping grounds in Portland and confront his past.”
According to Variety, ‘Pig’ is the directorial debut of Michael Sarnoski.
“What began as a very personal project has transformed into a labor of love for so many talented people,” Sarnoski told the outlet in September 2020. “I’m thrilled for us all to be bringing this strange world to life.”
Co-star Alex Wolff praised Nic Cage for his performance as Rob.
Nic is one of the most talented, brave, generous, influential, and inspired actors that’s ever been a part of any kind of cinema of any language or style,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “When someone’s work means more to your life than words can explain, it’s impossible to encapsulate what it means all in one answer [or] sentence.”
Wolff continued, “All I can say is that every day I leap out of bed and race to set to not only be graced with the sensitive, acrobatic talents of the Nicolas Cage as an actor, but also to be entertained and intellectually and spiritually nourished by my hilarious, deeply empathetic, close friend, Nic. In one sentence: It’s a f–ing joy working with him.”
‘Pig’ has been picked for domestic release by the film studio Neon and is slated for release on July 16, 2021.

Disaster Film ‘Greenland’ Is Getting A Sequel With Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin Returning

The 2020 disaster film ‘Greenland’ follows a family trying to survive during an environmental disaster and escape to the titular country. The movie was a surprise hit, making over $50 million at the box office despite being hampered by the global pandemic. It came as no surprise when it was announced that a sequel was in the works.
Variety reports that ‘Greenland: Migration’ has been announced, with most of the principal film cast and crew returning to work on the movie.
Thunder Road Pictures will handle production with Ric Roman Waugh returning to direct and Chris Sparling returning to pen the script.
Morena Baccarin is reprising her role as Allison Garrity with star Gerard Butler returning to both produce and reprise his character John Garrity.
“‘Greenland’ spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death,” Waugh told Variety.
The plot will follow the Garrity family, “who survive a near-extinction level event when an interstellar comet hits Earth, must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.”
Butler claimed that he was a “control freak” as a producer for the first film, according to the Pennsylvania News Today.
“As an actor, when you come, you beg for a role, and you’re lucky to get it, and you’re in a position where a movie is suddenly made because you’re involved… Notice that you are in,” he said. “If so, you would say, ’I want to make it, I want some control, I want to help shape this movie,’ although it’s not a studio movie like ‘Gods of Egypt’ or ‘Geostorm.’ All other movies are in an independent world.”
Butler explained, “I get the opportunity to develop, get involved in the script, and choose a director. It’s more responsible, but you’re more involved in the process, and I love it.”

Mothra, Oh, Mothra! The Queen Of Monsters Gets Her Own Statue

Here she is in all her glory. Mothra! The guardian of the natural world has been cast in polystone and sits above her egg, ready to protect the earth from monsters of all sizes.
I was surprised to see a classic Mothra appear at Entertainment Earth. Ever since the King of the Monsters version appeared, the original got pushed to the side as far as merchandise goes. The new one lacked all the charm of the big-eyed beauty from the classic Toho films.
Sometimes you just cannot beat the simple design. She may not be super accurate to a real-life moth, but she doesn’t have to be. Please learn that lesson Warner Bros.

One of the world’s most iconic Kaiju, the Queen of Monsters, Mothra, is here as a premium scale statue!
Throughout the years, Mothra has battled it out with Godzilla and many other giant sized threats. But her battle in the intense Godzilla: Tokyo SOS film is one of her most impressive and heartbreaking battles to date! Represented here is Mothra as she appeared in the that film, perched over her egg and ready to defend the planet once again. Sculpted by Matt Black, designed by Ian MacDonald, painted by Hector Arce, and with packaging illustration by Tom Whalen, the Mothra Tokyo SOS Premium Scale Statue stands at 16-inches tall and with a wingspan of 19-inches wide, and includes the non larva egg. Made of polystone and PVC.

It’s a shame we didn’t get more Mothra action in the Godzilla King of the Monsters. She deserves her own film set in the Kong/Godzilla universe. Hell, bring back the twins, too. Let’s go full-on with the Queen of the Monsters.
The 16″ tall statue will be out in November, but you can pre-order now. Mothra will run you $374.99.

Coming Soon: McFarlane’s Beefy Armored Batman of Dark Knight Returns

Ready to kick the big blue boy scout’s rear? Prepared to go all out in a final battle with the government’s tool in a dreary near-future Gotham City?
The Dark Knight Return’s version of Batman is my favorite interpretation of the crime fighter. I got the graphic novel just before the 1989’s film release. Frank Miller’s art and story about a retired Bruce Wayne coming back to fight harsher threats in a world that has fetishized superheroes was a trip for my young mind.
At that time, the big two’s superheroes were still all straight and narrow, rarely delving into such bleak subject matter. To see Batman fight Superman to the death was something new and impactful. That was until it was done to death, and Zack Snyder ruined the moment on film.
Regardless, McFarlane toys is tackling the Bat in his armored suit, as seen in the final pages of the comic. It captured all the details and more, even the huge barrel chest piece. Check it out below.

DC | McFarlane
The DC Multiverse Dark Knight Returns 7-Inch Scale Action Figure comes packaged in a blister box and comes with a collectible art card that features comic artwork on the front, and character biography on the back. Featured in the iconic style of Frank Miller’s Armored Batman Suit based on The Dark Knight Returns comic. The DC Multiverse The Dark Knight Returns Armored Batman 7-Inch Scale Action Figure features up to 22 points of articulation and comes with alternate hands and a display base.
As a child, Bruce Wayne watched as his parents were brutally killed in Gotham City’s Crime Alley. Traumatized by their deaths, he devoted his life to becoming the world’s greatest weapon against crime—the Batman! He’s a master detective and an expert martial artist, but his greatest weapon is his mind. Batman has a plan for every occasion, as well as high-tech weapons, gadgets, and vehicles to assist him in his relentless pursuit of justice! Now, after 10 years in retirement, Batman returns in an armored suit and ready for an epic battle to determine the fate of the Earth.
Batman, all decked out for his final battle with Superman, will be hitting shelves in August. You can pre-order him at Entertainment Earth now for $19.99.

Game & Watch Legend of Zelda Edition Coming This November!

I don’t blame Nintendo for banking on nostalgia. It’s a powerful tool, as long as the product being sold is quality. Though very much in need of new ideas, Nintendo continues to produce well-made systems and fun gimmicks.
One of those gimmicks that were surprisingly charming was the Game & Watch line of products. I had quite a few of them in the ’80s, and Nintendo’s continued embrace of the brand is oddly heartwarming. The small LCD games were the first time we’d see the Nintendo label on consumer products before the entertainment goliath that was the NES hit the market.
What started as simple games about moving cement or spraying pests would eventually be revived with better technology while retaining the same charming size.

Like the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch, we saw last year that the Legend of Zelda Game & Watch handheld will feature multiple games, a unique clock feature, save states, and a Zelda-themed version of the LCD game Vermin.
The titles included with this mighty mini system are:

  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (GameBoy Version)

Too bad Link’s Awakening isn’t the GBC version. It’s not a better game, but it’s a bit easier on the eyes. It’s not a short game, and the original GameBoy’s color scheme can be a bit of an eyesore after prolonged periods.
I’ll admit that I don’t play the SMB Game & Watch often, but it is a neat little piece of retro Nintendo. There’s a lot of nostalgia there. I had the original Super Mario Game & Watch as a kid. It acted as a stand-in for a NES because my parents decided that a SEGA Master System was better. Boomers, am I right?
Take note and pre-order this thing. Though the SMB one is easy to find now, it was a rarity for months after its launch. Scalpers have been going hard after tech since the pandemic.
