Japan Finds Different Ways to Stop Scalpers

0

It seems like scalping has gotten worse over recent years, especially since everything started happening last year with the pandemic, with plenty of stories reporting orders going out of stock within literal minutes of going up for sale. Scalpers will buy things in bulk, then sell them online for a bigger profit for themselves.

Clownfish Tv reported one incident back in May that was recorded on video of many adults scrambling and rushing to the isle of a Walmart store. Pokemon cards have been in high demand which can turn a big profit return for resellers if they buy the cards in bulk.

See that video here:

Pirates & Princesses recently reported another scalper event that you can read here. There have been attempts made to combat, or minimize scammers, as shown here in regards to Playstation 5:

Want A PS5? Here Is The Best Way To Get One Without Paying A Scalper

However, it’s not just an issue here in America, but also in other countries, such as Japan. Some stores have found their own creative ways to make it unappealing for scalpers to take advantage of sales.

Here are recent examples of two stores taking a stand against scalpers:

At one branch of the Yodobashi Camera store, they took measures to deter scalpers from buying stacks of the Sword and Shield-Chilling Reign expansion pack. They put up a sign you see in the above tweet, which reads:

“Notice regarding box purchases of Pokémon card game cards

In order to allow as many customers as possible to make purchase, we are implementing countermeasures against resellers. If you are purchasing a box of cards, the shrink wrap will be removed before you are given your purchase.”

This takes out the thrill of trying to sell a mint condition item that’s already been opened.

Another store had their own ideas about deterring scalpers. In Nagoya, there is a toy shop call Mickey. They put up a tweet with this photo:

The sign reads:

“To purchasers of plastic models:

As a countermeasure against resellers, for certain Gundam models and other low-inventory items, at the time of purchase the staff will open the interior part pouches and cut away a portion of the plastic runners.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”

Plastic runners are lines of plastic that holds pieces together. Builders of the model break the pieces off of the plastic liners to put together the model. That is part of the enjoyment of building a Gundam.

Both stores received very favorable responses. This would give fans and kids, who actually want these products, a chance to buy it at a more fair cost, rather than from a scalper, or reseller, who would undoubtably up-charge the price. It does have one disadvantage, and that is for collectors who want that pristine packaging.

What to you think? Is having a ‘tampered’ stack of cards or Gundam model kit worth it to prevent risk of scalping? What would you do to prevent scalpers from taking advantage of buying out something you would want to sell to your customers?

Replicas and replicas and more replicas! As someone who used to make these replicas and sold them on eBay for years, this is one heck of a deal. For $69.99, the set gives you so much stuff. Just a couple of these replicas would run you about that price on their own if purchased on the auction site.
Now, I cannot speak to their quality or accuracy yet. However, from a cursory examination of the currently available photos, there are some slight differences, and it’s difficult to judge the scale of the items.
Regardless, this would make an amazing gift for a BTTF fan. Even just a handful of these items would make for display pieces. The set can be pre-ordered here and should be shipping in November 2021.

Madballs Return Again With Retro-Inspired Action Figures

Madballs are back, again! This time a company called Premium DNA is handling the IP. We spotted new Madballs toys over at the Big Bad Toy Store. These include updated versions of action figures and a new Madball called Trashin’ Pumpkin.
The new editions of the Madball action figures include 26 points of articulation, multiple interchangeable parts, and accessories. Premium DNA even captured the weird squat proportions of the originals. These guys, however, do not have the head launching play feature, thankfully.
Premium DNA focuses on several retro IPs include Battle Toads, Conkers, Earthworm Jim, and even the forgotten toyline called Barnyard Commandos.

MadBalls as a brand has been fluxing in and out of the market for many years now. Sometimes there’s a resurgence of the classic balls. Other times the classics get slightly reinvented. Then there was that time that iconic horror movie villains got the ball treatment (heh).
If you grew up in the ’80s, you might have rented the Madballs movie, which was a pilot for a TV series that, sadly, never got picked up. But, if you went further down the rabbit hole, there was another VHS tape of the Madballs telling bad jokes. Yup. I remember seeing that at the movie rental place in my podunk town. It existed.

Get ready for some bad jokes and even worse animation!

I had the Oculus Orbus figure when I was a kid. The eye/head would never stay on the body. The latch was too loose. So, the eye would shoot off randomly. Nevertheless, he was cool looking thanks to that blood-red veiny body. These things lived up to their reputation of being gross. Perfect for kids of the 1980s!

The school I was going to in the late ’80s banned us from having Madballs. We couldn’t bring them to school or even wear anything with the branding. The school board made the same rule for band t-shirts, too. No White Snake or Run DMC gear for us elementary school kids.

Japan has Mixed Feelings on Netflix Cowboy Bebop

0

On Monday August 23rd, Netflix revealed a first look of their live-action Cowboy Bebop series set to air on November 19th of this year. Reactions on the reveal have been a mixture of excitement, cautious optimism, and high skepticism. The track record for anime-to-live-action adaptions in the U.S. have not always succeeded (Alita being one recent exception).

But what do people in Japan think? Considering the story was originally created in Japan, it’s only fair to be curious of their opinions on a live-action series based on one of the most iconic anime series. Even if an anime fan not a huge fan of the genre, they most certainly have heard of this 1990s Space Western.

Spike, Jet, Faye, and Ein

Some notable criticisms from Japan on twitter are:

“This just looks somehow off to me.”
“Spike doesn’t have his messy hair of world-weary expression, so I’m really worried about this.”
“Spike isn’t handsome enough.”
“Faye doesn’t look sexy at all.”
“Looks like some sort of gag cosplay session.”
“I’ve actually seen cosplay that looks better than this.”
“They look more like the cast of Black Lagoon.”
“Looks more like City Hunter to me.”

John Cho as Spike Spiegal
Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black
Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine

Others have commented on how all the overall color patterns have been toned down quite a bit. Though the series is set in the future with a rough and tough story, it was still balanced out with vibrant light and a colorful palette. This subdued color and light difference could change as more from the Netflix series is shown.

Even as many are unsure on how well Netflix will deliver on capturing what made Cowboy Bebop stand out as an anime, there are those who are either excited or cautiously optimistic and hopeful, as we can see in these samplings:

“So looking forward to this! I know there are a lot of different opinions, but it’s good for Bebop to be back in the spotlight in the current era.”
“Hmm…not entirely sold, but I’ll probably watch it to see how it is.”
“It’s good to see they’re trying to stay close to the original work and not making all sorts of weird changes. Not sure if I’m confident they can pull it off, though.”
“They’ve got [original anime composer] Yoko Kanno doing the music, and [original anime director] Shinichiro Watanabe involved [in a consulting role], so it can’t be all that bad, can it…”

Here is the opening for the anime series Cowboy Bebop:

Netflix describes the series:
Based on the worldwide phenomenon from Sunrise Inc, Cowboy Bebop is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed: a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world…for the right price.

What are your thoughts about Netflix’s interpretations so far? Do you plan on watching it when it comes out?

Batman Is Getting A New Lead Writer At DC Comics

0

‘Joker War’ author James Tynion IV is stepping away as the lead writer of Batman with former writer for ‘The Flash’ Joshua Williamson taking over as Batman prepares to leave Gotham City. Partnering with artist Jorge Molina, they are also bringing back the classic yellow and black bat-emblem on the Dark Knight’s chest.
“I’m writing Batman!” Williamson said according to GamesRadar. “As Batman leaves Gotham, I’m starting a new storyline called ‘Abyss’ drawn by the awesome Jorge Molina.”
He added, “We’re honoring the plan that the other books in the bat-line are doing while telling a brand-new story for Bruce Wayne as Batman in the DCU.”
Williamson worked with ‘The War of Jokes and Riddles’ writer Tom King for a 2017 crossover with Batman and the Flash known as ‘The Button.’
Molina joined in saying, “The bat is out of the bag!!! I’ve been waiting to do Batman all my career and now it’s the time.” He continued, “Teaming up with the amazingly talented [Joshua Williamson] on this exciting ride where we’ll explore new adventures for the Dark Knight while bringing a classic feel to it.”
GamesRadar notes that Williamson “has already become the de facto lead writer at DC, adds Batman to an already busy portfolio of two monthly ongoings in Robin and Deathstroke Inc., along with the event series Infinite Frontier, and the limited series Future State: Gotham (with co-writer Dennis Culver) and Justice League Incarnate (also with Culver). Outside of DC, he is also guest-writing The SIlver Coin #6.”
Williamson is taking over at Batman #118 with Tynion departing to focus on his own independent content on Substack.
“A grant from Substack to create a new slate of original comic book properties directly on their platform, that my co-creators and I would own completely, with Substack taking none of the intellectual property rights, or even the publishing rights,” Tynion explained. “Instead, I’m going to dedicate my whole brain to building a bunch of really cool stuff on my own terms, without having to get permission from any publisher to make it.”

Amazon Studios Releases Final Season Trailer For ‘Goliath’

0

The Amazon Studios legal-drama ‘Goliath’ is coming to an end. The television series that follows disgraced attorney Billy McBride, played by Billy Bob Thornton, and his quest for redemption will conclude at the finale of season four.
Thornton had previously told Collider about the show, “For me, starting with Season 1 until now, it’s been my life, so I don’t have to worry that much about being spread out, all over the place, and having to think about all of these different things ‘cause they are things that I feel happened to me. One of the things about this show is that, after awhile, he’s such an alcoholic lawyer that I actually feel like a lawyer.”
He added, “I’ve been playing this character long enough that I’ve started to feel like these things are actually happening to me. That’s a good thing, for an actor. Maybe not always good for you, personally, when you go home and think about stuff, but it’s certainly good for the character.”
You can check out the trailer here:

Amazon Studios announced the conclusion in a press release.
“Today, Amazon Prime Video released the official trailer and key art for the highly anticipated fourth and final season of Goliath, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Nina Arianda, Tania Raymonde, Diana Hopper, Julie Brister, Bruce Dern, Brandon Scott, Jena Malone, and J.K. Simmons,” they explained. “The entire eight-episode season will premiere on September 24, 2021 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.”
They continued, “In the final season, Billy returns to his Big Law roots after Patty (Nina Arianda) takes a job at a prestigious white-shoe law firm in San Francisco. Together, they try to take down one of America’s most insidious Goliaths: the opioid industry. As Billy deals with his own chronic pain and Patty can’t shake the feeling she’s being used, their loyalties will be tested, putting their partnership on the line. In a world where money can buy anything, even justice, they’ll have to risk everything to do what’s right. Goliath is from Amazon Studios, with executive producers Lawrence Trilling (Parenthood), Geyer Kosinski (Fargo), and Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner (Boardwalk Empire).”

Matt Reeves Opens Up About Making An “Emotional” Batman Film

0

As Warner Media prepares to release ‘The Batman,’ director Matt Reeves described the inspiration behind the DC Comics adaption and how it became an “emotional” story at this year’s CinemaCon.
Reeves said in a featurette shown at the convention that Frank Miller’s ‘Batman: Year One’ was a huge inspiration for Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the Dark Knight.
“I felt that we’ve seen lots of origin stories. It seems things go further and further into fantasy, and I thought, well, one place we haven’t been is grounding it in the way that Year One does, to come right into a young Batman, not being an origin tale, but referring to his origins and shaking him to his core,” Reeves explained according to EW. “You can have it be very practical, but I also thought it could be the most emotional Batman movie ever made.”
Pattinson chimed in during the featurette where he said, “For some reason, Batman has always stood out as one of the major characters of the 20th century, and so many people connect with it on such a deep level for so many different reasons.”
‘The Lighthouse actor added, “From the first conversation I had with Matt about it, I just knew that there was something radically different.”
Check out the trailer that was released during the DC Fandome 2020:

Besides Pattison as Bruce Wayne, the movie also stars Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale) as Jim Gordon, Paul Dano (Prisoners) as the Riddler, Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) as Alfred Pennyworth, Zoë Kravitz (Gemini) as Catwoman.
‘The Batman’ has faced numerous delays in production first due to pandemic lockdowns while filming in London and then faced cast and crew testing positive for Covid-19. There have also been rumors of tension between director Reeves and Pattinson, though many in the industry have denied that there is any conflict.
