We’ve got another Hooper on the way! Last year we reported on NECA’s Matt Hooper action figure, fresh off the boat and ready to cast skepticism on the “boating accident.” Today NECA announced that the self-important oceanographer has now suited up and is prepared to go into the water.
Coming this September, Hooper stands 8″ tall and comes with a fabric wetsuit. Unfortunately, the academic does not come with an underwater cage. What he does have to fend off the great white shark is the following:
Flippers
Wetsuit
Spear
Water-proof light
Knife
Oxygen tank
Shark dart
Wristwatch
Alternative head
NECANECANECANECANECA
NECA is excited to announce a new 8″ clothed figure featuring the licensed likeness of Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper from the 1975 classic.
Based on the shark cage scenes, standing at 8″ tall, the young oceanographer is equipped with screen-accurate accessories (flippers, spear, underwater light, knife, and oxygen tank) as well as swappable heads. Window box packaging.
Hooper can be pre-ordered at The Big Bad Toy Store for $39.99, but he’ll probably also show up at Target as Quint did. In addition, NECA sometimes produces accessory packs for some franchises. So, maybe they’ll produce a cage for Hooper, or perhaps a diorama of Ben Gardner’s boat.
I’m hoping Hooper’s alternate head is a little more wide-eyed in the final release to match that close-up view during the cage scene. This really makes me want a to-scale Orca, but I doubt NECA will ever make something that large.
So far, we’ve got one Quint and two Hoopers. Where’s Chief Brody? OK, to be honest, I’d really rather have a figure of Amity Island’s mayor, Larry Vaughn. He has to come with that gray anchor suit, though. No deal otherwise.
What do you think of these NECA figures? Let us know your opinions in the comments section below.

With all of the rumors surrounding ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ following the surprising cameos in the film’s teaser trailers, Marvel Studios has been busy trying to build excitement for the sequel which sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Stephen Strange.
Marvel Studios head and architect of the MCU Kevin Feige spoke about the film in an interview with Empire magazine.
“We want it to be a Sam Raimi movie,” he said according to SyFy Wire. “We would give notes like, ‘This action is cool — you’re competing with Avengers and Spider-Man, no problem — but don’t forget the Sam Raimi parts.’ You will see just how Sam Raimi it is, in ways that will make fans of Evil Dead II very happy.”
“[Sam] said, ‘We might need four or five pre-viz and conceptual artists.’ I said, ‘Sam, we’ve got dozens. They’re all yours,'” Feige continued. “It took me back to the days where I was just watching on the Spidey movies, and him having to fight for that, while essentially defining and revolutionizing what that kind of filmmaking was at the time.”
Kevin Feige noted that the MCU is about to get “out of hand” when it comes to the multiverse, which was first teased in ‘Agents of SHIELD’ and expanded upon in ‘Loki.’
The Doctor Strange sequel is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022, after a delay due to pandemic lockdowns. It will be directed by ‘Evil Dead’s Sam Raimi, who also helmed the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.
Raimi said on returning to the director’s chair after a hiatus, “I have missed directing.” He added that he felt “honored” to return to the Marvel Universe and has praised ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ which saw Maguire reprise his role as Spidey alongside Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.
Alongside Cumberbatch, the cast includes Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.
Fans of the ‘Fate/Grand’ series got some news when the HiDive streaming service announced that they had nabbed the anime fantasy spin-off film ‘Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity Grand Temple of Time: Solomon.’ The film serves as a follow-up to ‘Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia.’
HiDive said on their website, “Bummed that ‘Fate/Grand Order’ didn’t get the finale it deserved? We’ve got great news for you in that case: the ‘Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity Grand Temple of Time: Solomon’ (say that three times fast) movie is coming to HIDIVE on Monday, March 21, 2022.”
The movie was released in Japan on July 30, 2021. It is directed by Toshifumi Akai for CloverWorks with Aniplex distributing it. Funimation handled the dubbing and initially released it in North America.
The Fate/Grand Order official synopsis states, “After battling their way through all seven Singularities, the Chaldea Security Organization has finally arrived at the endpoint of the ‘Grand Order: The Final Singularity, Grand Temple of Time: Solomon. Now is the time to defeat the root of all evil, Solomon, the King of Mages. Now is the time to reclaim the future. With the final operation looming large, Romani Archaman considers the choices he will soon have to make, Mash Kyrielight dwells on life’s limitations, and Fujimaru prepares to receive a new Mystic Code. All their many encounters have led to this moment as Fujimaru and Mash, at last, embark on their final operation…”
The cast includes Ayako Kawasumi, Kenichi Suzumura, Maaya Sakamoto, Nobunaga Shimazaki, Rie Takahashi, Tomokazu Seki, Tomokazu Sugita, Mamoru Miyano, and Miyuki Sawashiro.

MyAnimeList explains ‘Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia’ takes place in “A.D. 2016, the foundations of humanity have been incinerated by the Mage King Solomon. Chaldea, a secret mages organization with the mission to preserve humanity’s future, foresaw mankind’s extinction in 2015. Thus commenced the operation to repair the Singularities in history caused by Holy Grails dispersed across time and space—Operation Grand Order.”
The series ran for twenty-one episodes.
Retro issues of Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain America are getting revamped with Marvel Comics announcing that they are partnering with Penguin Classics to release new versions of some of their titles.
“It’s time to clear some space on your bookshelves — the Penguin Classics Marvel Collection arrives this Summer on June 14,” Marvel said on their website. “For the first time, these classic stories of some of the most iconic Super Heroes in the history of American comics are Penguin Classics, and we’re excited to share a first look at The Amazing Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain America.”
They added, “These carefully curated comic book anthologies present the original stories and seminal tales of key Marvel characters, and serve as a testament to Marvel’s transformative impact on the fantasy genre and across popular culture. “It is impossible to imagine American popular culture without Marvel Comics. For decades, Marvel has published groundbreaking visual narratives that sustain attention on multiple levels: as metaphors for the experience of difference and otherness; as meditations on the fluid nature of identity; and as high-water marks in the artistic tradition of American cartooning, to name a few,” Marvel continued.
Black Panther’s collection will feature his first appearance in Fantastic Four as well as several issues featuring T’Challa in the hit series ‘Jungle Action.’
When it comes to Captain America, it will feature his first appearance as well as his run as the title character in ‘Tales of Suspense,’ plus the bonus story “Captain America…Commie Smasher.’
Fans of the supernatural action manga ‘Laughing in Purgatory’ got some disappointing news. The series from Japanese author Kemuri Karakara is coming to end. The series has been appearing monthly in the Tokyo-based Mag Garden’s ‘Monthly Comic Garden’ and will have its finale in the April 5th issue of the magazine.
“Karakara launched the manga in Monthly Comic Garden in January 2014. The manga’s 13th compiled book volume shipped in May 2021. The manga serves as a prequel to Laughing Under the Clouds, and it is set during Japan’s Warring States period, 300 years before the main manga’s story. The story centers on the Orochi at Lake Biwa. The manga inspired a stage play that debuted in 2017,” Anime News Network reported.
MyAnimeList describes the manga’s synopsis as follows,
“Set 300 years after Utakata ni Warau, and 300 years before Donten ni Warau, during the turbulent Sengoku period, it is the story of a young man named Ishida Sakichi, whose mission leads him to encounter a pair of mysterious twins at the Kumo Shrine.”
The cast of the stage play based on ‘Laughing in Purgatory’ include Hiroki Suzuki as Sakichi Ishida, Tsubasa Sakiyama as Baren Kumou, and Ami Maejima as Okuni Kumou.
The manga serves as a prequel to ‘Laughing Under The Clouds’ created by Karakara Kemuri and also published by Mag Garden. It was released in the United States by Tokyopop. It was picked up as an anime by Doga Kobo that ran for twelve episodes with a dub being produced by Funimation.
MyAnimeList lists the description,
“In the 11th year of the Meiji Era, the end of the samurai shogunate and the prohibition of swords has left Japan with lasting scars. Displeased by these recent changes, many former samurai plot against the new government, inciting a wave of bloodshed. To counter this movement, the government constructs a colossal prison in the middle of Lake Biwa.
Unofficially assigned to help the police arrest criminals, Tenka Kumou also serves as a ferryman to the Lake Biwa prison with the help of his two younger siblings: the ambitious Soramaru and the enthusiastic Chuutarou. Together with the former Fuma ninja Shirasu Kinjou, the Kumou brothers live a frugal and joyful life mostly dedicated to studying and training.
However, behind this relatively uneventful daily routine, the specter of the “Orochi” curse is starting to spread its shadow over the city of Oumi. According to legend, every three hundred years, Orochi reincarnates in a human vessel—and it is believed that this is the harbinger of an imminent catastrophe. As various groups clash in search of Orochi’s vessel, some aim to seal the curse, while others have darker plans in motion.”
The anime was produced by VAP and Nippon Television Network.

‘Irredeemable’ is a Boom! Studios comic book written by Mark Waid and illustrated mostly by Peter Krause and Diego Barreto. The story presented a Superman-like hero called The Plutonian who turns against humanity, instituting a reign of terror that other heroes seem helpless to stop as they try to stop him before he destroys the Earth.
Netflix has announced that they were developing a film adaption that would combine ‘Irredeemable’ with its spin-off series ‘Incorruptible,’ about a villain who becomes a hero after the Plutonian turns evil. It will be directed by Jeymes Samuel (‘The Harder They Fall) with Kemp Powers serving as writer and co-executive producer.
The show will be produced by Shawn Carter (Jay-Z), James Lassiter, Jeymes Samuel, Stephen Christy, and Ross Richie, The Hollywood Reporter said.
The streaming service said in a press release,
“Created by comic book legend Mark Waid (“Kingdom Come”) and illustrated by Peter Krause, Irredeemable is one of the most impactful series of its time, running for 37 issues and selling over 1.5 million copies. A deconstructionist remix of the genre, the series dramatizes how the world’s greatest hero — The Plutonian — snapped under the pressure of his responsibilities and charted a dark path to become the world’s greatest supervillain. Irredeemable’s sister series, Incorruptible, flipped the coin and followed supervillain Max Damage as he responded to the Plutonian’s evil by gradually transforming himself into a superhero.”
This will be the second attempt at a film adaptation of the comic book. In 2016, 20th Century Fox was planning a movie with Adam McKay (‘The Big Short’) serving as director with Tommy Wirkola (‘Kurt Josef Wagle and the Legend of the Fjord Witch’) handling the script.
‘Irredeemable’ ran for thirty-seven issues from April 2009 – May 2012. ‘Incorruptible’ ran for thirty issues between December 2009 – May 2012. It was also written by Mark Waid with artwork from Horacio Domingues, Marcio Takara, and Damian Couceiro.
‘Six Gates Far Away Mon Colle Knight’ is a fantasy adventure manga written by Satoru Akahori and Katsumi Hasegawa with illustrations by Hideaki Nishikawa for Kadokawa Shoten Publishing. The series ran from September 27, 1999, to April 27, 2001 and was released in four volumes. It was picked up by Studio Deen for an anime that ran for fifty-one episodes.
Discotek Media produced forty-six for an English dub known as ‘Mon Colle Knights’ in 2000. For the first time, they are releasing it on home video in Blu-Ray.
The English cast included Derek Stephen Prince (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders), Brianne Siddall (Digimon), Jamieson Price (Flint the Time Detective), Wendee Lee (Robotech), Joe Ochman (BNA: Brand New Animal), Michael Sorich (Naruto), R. Martin Klein (Eagle Riders), Philece Sampler (Great Teacher Onizuka), and Lex Lang (Transformers: Robots in Disguise).
The DVD is currently available for pre-order ahead of its March 31, 2022 release date.

The anime was directed by Yasunao Aoki with music from Hiroshi Sakamoto. Tony Oliver, Scott Page-Pagester, and Michael Sorich served as the voice directors for the dub.
While checking out my local hobby shop, I spotted a box I’d not seen for several years. It was Aurora’s Godzilla kit! The last time it popped up was back in 2000. It took another twenty years for a reissue, most likely due to Godzilla’s 65th birthday in 2020. So it was another two years before I finally spotted this bad boy on shelves. Glow-in-the-dark parts and all!
Here’s a little history of this specific model. The original version, sans glow-in-the-dark parts, was released by Aurora in 1963. When 1969 came around, the company reissued to kit with new “Frightening Lightning” parts. Unfortunately, Aurora went out of business in 1980. In the 1990s and to the present day, other companies have been reissuing many of Aurora Plastic’s kits, including Polar Lights, Moebius Models, Atlantis Models, and Monarch Models.
Out of those four, Moebius has been my favorite. While they’re using the same molds with a few tweaks, Moebius tended to produce the cleaner kits with less excess plastic to trim away. Until today, I’d never seen an Atlantis kit in stores. So, let’s see what they have to offer. Mike PhalinMike PhalinMike Phalin
The box itself is worth saving, at the very least, for the 1969 artwork. Growing up with these kits, we knew that the kit would turn out just like how we saw it on the box before model-building skills were advanced. Don’t give me a glow-in-the-dark gimmick, and expect me to ruin it with paint!
Even the instructions feel straight out of the ’60s. Odds are these illustrations are from the original guide. They’re hand-drawn, simple, and impossible to screw up. Mike PhalinMike PhalinMike Phalin
The kit was loose, with several items already free from the sprues. However, all of the glow parts were intact. No parts were broken, but, oddly, so many pieces of the King of the Monsters had come loose when there was no evidence of damage to the box. Mike PhalinMike Phalin
Reissues of these 50+-year-old kits are loaded with good and bad qualities. So, on the one hand, we get to see exactly what everyone else got to build half a century ago. But, on the other hand, very little has been done to fix issues common with these older molds. Whether it’s issues with significant gaps in the seams or parts that poorly fit together, they’re all there for advanced model builders to fix. So for this review, we’re putting this thing together as-is without applying any putty or paint to correct the problems.
We see most of these issues with the tail section and the top of Godzilla’s head. There’s a massive gap between his tail and body, while there’s also a size issue between the top and bottom of the tail sections. This could be an issue with warping due to the difference in the materials used for the green parts and glowing pieces.
Luckily the gap on the tail is hard to see once Godzilla is placed on the base. However, the seam on the top of his head is more noticeable. Even when clamped and glued, this seam would still separate. Mike Phalin
The rest of the body is pretty sturdy in design. The connections at his shoulders and hips are angled, allowing for a tighter fit and a more stable structure when standing on his own two feet. We did have to tape certain parts together to make sure that the fit was as tight as possible. Mike PhalinMike PhalinMike PhalinMike Phalin
There was an issue with the molding on the left leg. During the injection process, one of the two parts for this leg didn’t get enough plastic, leaving a bowed portion in the leg. This left a 1/16″ gap in the seam that we couldn’t fix without the use of putty. Since we wanted to assemble this straight out of the box with no extra steps, we attempted to clamp it with tape, but to no avail.
While not super detailed, the base gets the job done when showing just how much destruction Godzilla can leave in his wake. Unfortunately, the larger cityscape section was a bit warped, making it challenging to keep the two areas together while the glue dried. An easy solution would be to heat these parts and bend some more skewed building sections back into position. However, it would be hard to tell there was an error considering how much wreckage is in this scene.
Godzilla’s feet slot into the base thanks to two different sized pegs in his feet. The base isn’t very thick, but we had no issue getting the beast to stand independently with only a tiny bit of glue. Mike PhalinMike PhalinMike Phalin
Assembly, with minor trimming and quick fixes, takes about 90 minutes. When Godzilla is put together, he brings back many memories of taking those first steps into model building.
Keep in mind that this isn’t a snap kit, so you will have to choose between the solid green or glowly bits during the building process. You won’t be able to swap out the fins after he’s put together. The hands, head, and feet can be swapped out because they stay more or less in place without glue. Mike PhalinMike PhalinMike PhalinMike Phalin
I’m very pleased with this old Aurora kit as a throwback display piece. The various problems common with these retro kits are easily fixable with a few common materials, but for a quick project, it’s fun.
We picked this model kit up from ME Hobbies. Depending on your local or online retailer, he’ll set you back between $35-$40.
