Wanna be Batman? You can! Just Buy this $950 Cowl From The ’89 Movie!

I’m Batman. You can be Batman, too. That is if you have around $950 and a black bodysuit … and a turbine-powered car, and a huge fortune. OK, we can’t really be Batman. At the very least, we can pretend so with this film-accurate cowl from Denuo Novo.
The company, known for producing Star Wars helmets and other prop replicas, is moving into DC Comics territory. First up is a recreation of Batman’s cowl from the 1989 Tim Burton movie. However, unlike many other premium Batman cowls we’ve seen over the years, this one is intended to be worn and is not mass-produced.
Denuo Novo’s team will handcraft each piece of Batman’s iconic headwear until the production run hits 500. Then that’s it. The cowl was recreated digitally, referencing the original suit, and the replicas will be made from platinum silicone. In addition, each piece produced will be mounted on a fiberglass stand.

Sculpted in a digital format from references of the original screen-used cowl, every angle and original detail was carefully considered and preserved. From recreating the purposeful texturing of the base to the inclusion of the back seam, no detail was spared to bring to you the most accurate wearable replica.
Master craftsmen will construct each cowl from platinum silicone, meant for long term durability and comfortable wearability. When not being worn, the cowl can be returned to its custom made base, specifically created to naturally follow the exact contours of the original sculpt, for long term preservation and display.

What I noticed was missing from the replica’s description was if the bat symbol was removable. Also, does the underside of the cowl have any of the details remaining that allowed it to clip to the rest of the batsuit? I guess we’ll find out during the third quarter of this year.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Writer Says The Show Will Take Place When “The Empire is in the ascendancy.”

Star Wars fans have been preparing for the Disney Plus release of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,’ which stars Ewan McGregor reprising the role of the Jedi outcast ten years after the conclusion of ‘Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.’ The show is being directed by Deborah Chow with a planned release date of May 27th, 2022.
Following the release of the trailer, there has been speculation about the plot details. Series writer and co-executive producer Joby Harold shined a light on the premise and the plot.
“It takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, in a time of darkness in the galaxy,” Harold told EW in an interview. “The Empire is in the ascendancy. And all the horrors that come with the Empire are being made manifest throughout the galaxy. And the Jedi Order as we know them are being all but wiped out. So everything that was in the prequels has crumbled.”
“Those surviving Jedi, those that do survive, are on the run,” he noted, “and they’re in hiding. And Vader and his Inquisitors are chasing them to the end of the galaxy.”
“Within that hopeless fatalistic world, we find possibly the most famous of all our surviving Jedi in hiding struggling with that faith that defines the Jedi, and wanting to hold onto it and hoping to regain that faith within that sort of hopeless world,” he said.
The Expanded Universe of Star Wars novels explored this era in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, but Disney does not seem to be interested in tapping them for ideas. That being said, they will show Obi-Wan’s transition from Jedi Master of the prequels to the wise sage of the Original Trilogy.
“Within that environment and that galaxy, his faith is tested,” Harold continued. “And he goes on a journey that allows him to travel from that character that we saw in the last of the prequels, where [McGregor] really felt like he was embodying Obi-Wan Kenobi to a pretty extraordinary degree, and ends with him as the more finished article that Sir Alec Guinness gave to the world in A New Hope. And so in this very specific time in the history of Star Wars, when the Jedi are on run, we get to sort of stand next to and watch Obi-Wan as he runs the gauntlet and has to survive a pretty extraordinary experience.”
Harold went on to say that Hayden Christiansen will share screen time with McGregor playing Darth Vader.

‘MythForce’ Promises A Roguelike Brawler Honoring Cartoons of the 1980s

Are you ready to charge into a castle full of monsters with a group of friends? Get your spells, bows, swords, and shields ready because MythForce is going to procedurally generate 1980s nostalgia!
Tech Radar made us aware that a new roguelike four-player online co-op FPS is on the way that wants to recapture the action-adventure genre of 1980s cartoons like He-Man, Dungeons & Dragons, and Thundarr the Barbarian. The title is being developed by Beamdog, a game studio run by CEO and Bioware co-founder Trent Oster.
The game will be in early access starting on April 20th via the Epic Game Store. The title will be priced at $29.99, and the content will be delivered in the form of “episodes.” Check the trailer out below:

Inspired by beloved 80s cartoons, MythForceunites swords & sorcery with gripping 1st-person combat in a roguelite adventure fit for Saturday mornings. Brave the dungeon alone or join forces with friends to take on an ever-changing Castle of Evil!

Here are the technical specs because, as of right now, this will only be available on PC:

Epic Games
MythForce’s official website goes hard on the nostalgia bait, but what about the gameplay? It appears to be a bit rough, but the cel-shaded models look pretty good.
The voice acting, though, leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re going to market a game on ’80s cartoon nostalgia, get some VO artists who put conviction into their performances. Maybe the lines we hear in the trailer are placeholders?
The trailer is getting a lot of positive comments, but the downvotes are surpassing the upvotes. Here’s a screenshot of the trailer I took this morning:

Epic Games Gets A $1B Infusion Thanks To LEGO and Sony

Epic Games wants to create a metaverse of its own, and the company just got a massive cash infusion thanks to two major businesses. Both Sony and Kirkbi (LEGO) dropped a total of $1 billion into the gaming company responsible for Fortnite and the Unreal Engine.
We saw this story over at PC Mag. It would appear that Kirkbi and Sony want to get a jumpstart on what may be the next big thing in gaming. The term metaverse is a bit nebulous as it can fluctuate from medium to medium. So, what are these two companies looking to accomplish in a digital space?
It is unclear what types of media and experiences the three are looking to create. However, Kirkbi’s CEO, Søren Thorup Sørensen, issued a vague statement about the investment’s purpose as a step to “accelerate our engagement in the world of digital play.”
VR LEGO building with friends? Yes, please!
Meanwhile, Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony Group Corporation’s top man, was a little more transparent with the intent of the investment. He said that this influx of cash into Epic Games would “deepen our relationship in the metaverse field, a space where creators and users share their time.”

So, the metaverse is a new buzzword similar to the whole “Web 2.0” bull we kept hearing about back in the late 2000s. While “metaverse” is commonly associated with Facebook’s new VR space, it is also a general term. In the case of the LEGO, EPIC, and Sony collaboration, it could mean a massive VR gaming space. This could be an excellent idea, especially if it means we get a Fortnite-styled shooter in the world of LEGO.
In reality, though, it will all boil down to Sony and LEGO using the newest Epic Engine to power online games that can use the “metaverse” as a marketing gimmick. It’s par for the course, but I hope these companies take a chance with the technology and try to give us new experiences rather than technobabble.

Celebrate Over 30 Years Of Sonic With This New Statue

0

Coinciding with Sonic’s first appearance with the SEGA Genesis, Mr. Needle Mouse appeared in SEGA Visions magazine alongside the publication’s mascot Niles Nemo. At the time, none of us knew that this blue hedgehog would become a gaming mascot on (almost) the same level as Mario. Over 30 years have passed since that day, and SEGA’s icon is still running strong, with two hit feature-length films under his belt.
It’s a cause for celebration! Sonic is in his 30s, and that means he’ll soon be feeling that pain in his joints and have to settle down to start a family with Amy. Maybe he will finally get a restraining order against Chris Chan? What we do know for sure is that Dark Horse Direct is taking pre-orders for a celebratory statue!
The statue is marked down to $479.99 from $519.99. Sonic’s anniversary statue is due out in the second quarter of 2023 and measures 16.4″ tall, 12.4″ wide, and 17″ long.

The highly detailed Sonic statue was made to commemorate Sonic The Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary in the games industry and has since become one of the most beloved video game franchises to date. The design is inspired by the official artwork of the anniversary, where Sonic looks like he’s stepping out of the gigantic gold ring.
The base has a metallic regal design fitting for an anniversary celebration, and each side of the base represents a different zone in the Sonic The Hedgehog universe: the Studiopolis Zone, the Chemical Plant Zone, the Press Garden Zone, and, of course, the iconic Green Hill Zone. And last but not least, the top of the base has a mirror finish to give the entire statue a more grandiose appearance!

‘Spy x Family’ Anime English Dub Cast Announced

0

‘Spy x Family’ is an action-comedy manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo about a spy who has to undercover with a family. The manga’s popularity led to an anime adaption produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks which was released in April 2022. The show is written and directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi with Crunchyroll announcing that they had recruited a voice cast for an English dub.
Alex Organ (Death Parade) will play the spy known as “Twilight” aka Loid Forger with Natalie Van Sistine (Azur Lane) taking on the role of “Thorn Princess” aka Yor Forger. Megan Shipman (citrus) will voice the psychic child agent “Subject 007” aka Anya Forger, completing the fake spy family.
The rest of the cast includes Anthony Bowling (By the Grace of the Gods) as Franky with Cris George serving as ADR director.
You can watch the trailer below:

Crunchyroll described the synopsis as follows:
Everyone has a part of themselves they cannot show to anyone else. At a time when all nations of the world were involved in a fierce war of information happening behind closed doors, Ostania and Westalis had been in a state of cold war against one another for decades.
The Westalis Intelligence Services’ Eastern-Focused Division (WISE) sends their most talented spy, “Twilight,” on a top-secret mission to investigate the movements of Donovan Desmond, the chairman of Ostania’s National Unity Party, who is threatening peace efforts between the two nations.
This mission is known as “Operation Strix.” It consists of “putting together a family in one week in order to infiltrate social gatherings organized by the elite school that Desmond’s son attends.”
“Twilight” takes on the identity of psychiatrist Loid Forger and starts looking for family members. But Anya, the daughter he adopts, turns out to have the ability to read people’s minds, while his wife, Yor, is an assassin! With it being in each of their own interests to keep these facts hidden, they start living together while concealing their true identities from one another.
World peace is now in the hands of this brand-new family as they embark on an adventure full of surprises.”
Makoto Miyazaki and Shuhei Mutsuki handle the music for the show.

Review: ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ – References, Romance, and Robotnik

0

Oh, Sonic. What a weird ride it has been to get to this point. The first Sonic live-action movie was the last film I saw in theatres before the pandemic. I remember walking away from it feeling little bits of nostalgia creeping into my brain. Still, I could not remember much about the plot aside from Robotnik and the blue hedgehog. It was part road trip movie, part buddy comedy, but lacked all the fantastical elements of the games.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 bravely tried to rectify these issues with a lot of success and one glaring failure. We get adventure and action. We see fan-favorite characters inch closer to their video game counterparts. And we get a weird detour into a romantic comedy subplot for no reason. Yes, the story of Sonic 2 is just as odd as the premise of the games that bear his name.
The plot picks up some 250+ days after Sonic defeated Dr. Robotnik, sending Eggman to the Mushroom Planet. Rather than admit defeat, the evil scientist uses what little tech he has with him to create a beacon.
Thanks to one of Sonic’s quills, this beacon’s signal attracts a specific group of hunters lead by Knuckles. After striking a deal with Robotnik, Knuckles is led to Earth, believing Sonic knows the location of the hidden Chaos Emerald.
Knuckles isn’t the only one on Sonic’s trail. Tails arrive on Earth just in time to save the speedy needle mouse from angry red echidna. The two then set off to find the Chaos Emerald with Robotnik and Knuckles on their trail. The plot could not be more straightforward, and that is always the best when we’re talking about an action-adventure movie. The downside is we get a few stilted exposition dumps, but that’s more of a fault of the first movie not setting up more info about Sonic’s guardian or the ongoing battle between the two tribes.
Sonic and Tails, as characters, are fun. Tails is chipper and admires Sonic genuinely, rather than the annoying fanboy/fangirl trope we’ve seen all too often in media. However, their friendship is a bit rushed, and perhaps their bonding moment could have been handled with a better scenario than a dance-off inside of a Siberian cabin tavern (yes, that does happen).
What I will give Sonic 2 credit for is playing up to the franchise’s fans. This encompasses fans of the games, comics, and cartoons. Sonic 1 and this sequel don’t fall into the same trap we see many other franchises fall into. It does not treat the fans like pests, nor does the film try to deconstruct the Hedgehog through a post-modern lens of bleakness.
Bringing Colleen O’Shaughnessey in to voice Miles ‘Tails’ Prower is a testament to how this production is fan-focused instead of trying to water everything down for the “average” filmgoer. Unlike Ben Schwartz’s Sonic, O’Shaughnessey’s voice perfectly matches the cartoony twin-tailed fox. It’s evident that the backlash against the original Sonic design set into motion several changes that were more than purely aesthetic. I wish the same case could be said for Knuckles.
Idris Elba’s voice work as the last of the Echidnas is rough. I understand what Elba was going for, but there’s so little passion or conviction in his performance. The character is the last of his kind, sworn to a mission that has taken him across the galaxy, and he ultimately sounds bored. Knuckles needed a seasoned voice actor to pull it off. Someone like Clancy Brown should have been in the recording booth instead.
Aside from that hiccup, the rest of the casting is well put together, if not excessive. Unfortunately, during the middle of the film, we get what feels like 20 minutes of fluff centered around a very contrived plot point that hinges on a million-to-one chance that Sonic will be in this exact place, at this exact moment.
Yes, we’re talking about Rachel’s wedding in Hawaii. General Olive Garden from the first film has put together a team going by the acronym GUN to hunt down Sonic. His gameplan? To catfish Rachel (Natasha Rothwell) using an undercover agent so they’ll get married, invite Tom and Maddie Wachowski to the ceremony, and hope that Sonic just maybe there.
Of course, through a very contrived plot device, Tom has to use a misplaced magic gold ring to save Sonic just in time for him to be in full view of an entire gathering of undercover agents … and before Shemar Moore’s character, Randall can officially marry Rachel.
Sonic 2 officially turned into a rom-com about a government agent falling in love with the woman he was pretending to marry. Natasha Rothwell and Tika Sumpter get a few funny moments while they use the aftermath of the ruined wedding to find the now-captured Sonic and Tails, but once that’s done, both Rachel and Randall vanish from the movie. They do not come back at the end or in a post-credit scene. They’re gone. No payoff or anything.
This section of the movie felt like it was added entirely to pad out the runtime. Why? I have no idea. The film is 2 hours long and Sonic being captured added nothing to the movie aside from giving more screen time to the secondary human characters.
I could see my daughter getting visibly bored by this, making for the perfect bathroom break. No plot elements are lost, aside from letting us know that the plane Tails uses later came from (he stole it and somehow managed to modify it with guns off-screen in a concise amount of time).
Aside from this weird detour in the plot that ultimately added nothing to our knowledge of the main characters, the rest of the story is pretty straightforward for the rest of the runtime. Robotnik gets what he wants by betraying his new pal, and Sonic must work with everyone as a team to defeat a new god-like threat.
As I mentioned before, this movie is 100% for those who have been fans of the Hedgehog through several different mediums. The references come fast, like jokes in a classic comedy from Abrahams & the Zuckers. Some are quickfire visual gags. For example, there’s an instruction guide styled like a Genesis game’s manual. And there are the obvious ones like Eggman’s secret lair disguised as a coffee shop called ‘The Mean Bean.’
We even get a brief glimpse of what Robotnik would look like if he were as plump as he is in the original games. Even Eggman’s robots and personal transport are direct references from the early games. Sonic 2 embraces the cartoony aspects of the characters as it should.
Oh, there is a mid-credit scene. Luckily, the credits take the form of an animated retelling of the film’s story so that you won’t be sitting through a long list of names for a brief two-minute snippet teasing the next movie. Yes, it does show off another long-time Sonic character, but I won’t spoil it. I will say, though, that the reveal doesn’t make a lot of scenes.
This film has a lot going for it over the first Sonic movie. Thankfully, the human characters have less screen time except for the filler in the middle. Sonic finds his calling. Tails finds his hero, and Knuckles comes to terms with the reality of why others tried to keep the Chaos Emerald safe.
Jim Carrey has fully embraced the maniacal aspects of Dr. Robotnik and honestly does try to recapture his energy from the ’90s. However, much of his performance made me wonder how off-the-wall Eggman would have been if younger Jim had a shot at the role.
If the film franchise moves the story away from Earth for the majority of the next installment, I could see the Sonic series finding the right setting for its anthropomorphic characters. But instead, the human characters and their drama are hindering the story’s flow.
