‘Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie’ Anime Gets An English Dub

0

‘Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie’ is a romantic comedy manga created by Keigo Maki that is being serialized in the Kodansha magazine ‘Magazine Pocket.’ The rom-com launched in 2019 and has thus far produced twelve volumes. Its popularity led to the Japanese animation studio Doga Kobo picking it up for an anime adaptation under director Ryota Itoh that was launched in April 2022 and Crunchyroll announcing they are picking up the series for an English dub.
“She’s beauty, she’s grace, and she just might kick you in the face — the intensely adorable Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie is the latest Spring 2022 anime to get the English dub treatment,” they said on their website, noting that the first episode dropped to April 23, 2022.
Crunchyroll released the cast list:

  • Macy Anne Johnson (Chiyuki in Smile Down the Runway) as Shikimori
  • Bryson Baugus (Bell in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) as Izumi
  • Clifford Chapin (Bakugo in My Hero Academia) as Inuzuka
  • Michelle Rojas (Roxy in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation) as Nekozaki
  • Molly Zhang (Adachi’s Manager in Adachi and Shimamura) as Hachimitsu
  • Lydia Mackay (Kyoko in Fruits Basket) as Motoko
  • Mark Stoddard (Oishi in Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU) as Akisada

Emily Fajardo is working as the ADR director with Mark Allen Jr. and Tia Ballard serving as assistant ADR directors.
You can watch this official dub clip below:

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows:
“Shikimori seems like the perfect girlfriend: cute, fun to be around, sweet when she wants to be… but she has a cool dark side that comes out under the right circumstances. And her boyfriend Izumi loves to be around when that happens!”
Shōhei Yamanaka is serving as the anime’s assistant director with Ai Kikuchi working on the character designs and Yoshimi Narita handling the scriptwriting details.
Kondasha USA has been publishing the manga in North America since October 2020 and (as of the writing of this article) has released the first eight volumes of ‘Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie.’

Mezco’s Doctor Doom One:12 Figure Is Packing Heat!

Doctor Doom is one of the most interesting villains in the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, he has yet to be adapted appropriately into live-action for some reason. I don’t hold out much hope since the MCU’s baddies usually become one-note disposable adversaries. It’s best to stick to the original.
Mezco had the same idea. The company’s latest One:12 Collective figure is none other than Doom himself, and he’s packing some serious hardware. The $155 action figure is clad in metal armor, softgoods and loaded with accessories. Reed and company are in for a bad time. Expect Doom to arrive from Latveria sometime between February and April 2023.

Wicked’s Film Adaptation Gets Split Into Multiple Movies

0

The Wicked motion picture adaptation is still happening, but the production is so large that what was supposed to be a single film has now been split into two parts. The adaptation’s director Jon M. Chu issued a statement updating fans on the how and why of the decision.
From the info we spotted at Coming Soon, rather than trying to compress the world-building and all the songs into a single 2+ hour long movie, the filmmaker has decided that the film needed to be told via two films rather than one. Entirely understandable, given the amount that happens in the Wicked story, and would suffer quite a bit with significant cuts. Luckily the film is not getting pushed any further out than Christmas 2024. I would guess that Part 2 would follow three to six months after that.
According to Chu:

“As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but TWO!!! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”

Below is the statement in full:

Jon M. Chu
What we know as the popular version of Wicked started as a Gregory Maguire novel called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Released in 1995, the story turned the classic MGM version L. Frank Baum’s Wicked Witch into a somewhat heroic activist. Born Elphaba, the green-skinned inhabitant of OZ, wants to bring equality to the land. What follows is a twisted tale of betrayal, death, and the eventual hardening of Elphaba’s heart.
The popular musical by Stephen Schwartz followed the same story for the most part, with the necessary artistic liberties taken to turn the 406-page fantasy into a two-and-a-half-hour musical. Wicked had its premiere in 2003 and has been on world tour ever since. Personally, I wish Chu and his crew were adapting the book rather than the musical, but I’m probably in the minority.
What do you think of Wicked, either the musical or the book? Let us know in the comments section below.

Actress Xochitl Gomez Discusses Playing America Chavez In ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel

America Chavez is a Marvel Comics superhero who made her 2001 debut as an interdimensional alien in the pages of ‘Vengeance.’ She would go on to join the Young Avengers with her origin being retconned in ‘America Chavez: Made in the USA’ in 2021. The character is now joining the line-up of heroes in ‘Doctor Strange: Into The Multiverse Of Madness’ with Benedict Cumberbatch as the protagonist and Elizabeth Olsen reprising her roles as the Scarlet Witch.
Teen actress Xochitl Gomez (‘Shadow Wolves’) is portraying America Chavez in her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut with trailers showing her working with the Sorcerer Supreme in several sequences.

She opened up about portraying the character in an interview with Marvel Universe, explaining she got the role after testing for it in the United Kingdom over a Zoom call with casting director Sarah Finn.
“She said she had something big to tell me, and said, ‘Xochitl, welcome to the MCU! You are America Chavez.’ I was so shocked and frozen. It took me a couple [of] weeks to process the news,” Gomez explained.
The actress said that she immediately started reading the comics in order to get a grasp of the Young Avenger, saying that she “instantly fell in love with her.”
“You can definitely see the beginning stages of what future America might become,” Gomez continued. “I took stuff that was in the comics, and kind of lightened it up since she’s less experienced. She’s younger than any of her known appearances in the comics, and I think you can see that. It was a fun challenge exploring what a younger and less experienced America might be, but also hinting towards the serious leader she would soon become. I wanted to keep that kid energy and a little bit of that fake-it-till-you-make-it confidence.”
‘Doctor Strange: Into The Multiverse Of Madness’ is set to debut exclusively in theaters on May 6.

Return What You Have Stolen! The ‘Time Bandits’ Toys Are Officially Here!

It’s about time that one of Terry Gilliam’s greatest fantasy movies got some official merchandise! Time Bandits, his pre-Brazil time-traveling epic, was released in 1981 and went on to be a cult classic. Yet very few pieces of merch have surfaced. Some artists make reproductions of the Map, but no toys … until now.
Plastic Meatball has officially released the first wave of action figures based on Time Bandits. This initial set of 3.75″ scale figures includes Evil (David Warner), Randall (David Rappaport), and Og (Mike Edmonds) after being turned into a pig. Articulation is limited to only five points, like many classic action figures. Each figure is $14.99, shipping not included.

Plastic Meatball

The self-proclaimed leader of the Time Bandits, Randall uses the Supreme Being’s map of the universe to travel through time to get stinking rich by stealing from some of history’s most famous personalities.

Plastic Meatball

Before Og was turned into a very well dressed pig by Evil, he was famously known as the Time Bandit who designed the “Pink Bunkadoo” – a tree that smelled so bad it caused the Bandits to be fired by the Supreme Being.

Plastic Meatball

From his Fortress of Ultimate Darkness, Evil keeps a close eye on the Time Bandits, drawing them ever closer to his grasp so he can steal the Supreme Being’s map and use it for his own nefarious purposes!

Time Bandits was my first experience with a Terry Gilliam film, followed closely after by Brazil. It was one of those rare movies where a majority of the main actors were little people. David Rappaport stole most scenes, and I wish his character had a follow-up film. Sadly, Rappaport died in 1990.
I’m hoping that his chaotic masterpiece, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, also gets this sort of love from either Plastic Meatball or Super7. The cast of characters from that film is perfect for the retro-style action figure model. King of the Moon with a launching head. Bertold with windup running legs. The Baron with interchangeable aging heads. Come on! Someone get this started!

LIDENFILMS Announces ‘The Legendary Hero is Dead’ Anime for 2023

0

‘Yuusha ga Shinda!: Murabito no Ore ga Hotta Otoshiana ni Yuusha ga Ochita Kekka’ also known as ‘The Legendary Hero Is Dead’ is an Ecchi fantasy action comedy written and illustrated by the Japanese author Subaruichi. It has been released by the manga magazine Ura Sunday since 2014 and by Shogakukan Asia in the United States since 2015.
Crunchyroll is reporting on their website that LIDENFILMS has picked up the manga for an anime adaptation with Rion Kujo set to direct. Voice actor Wataru Kato will take on the role of protagonist Touka Scott and Shunichi Toki performing the character of Sion. LIDENFILMS also dropped a teaser trailer along with the announcement.
You can check out the teaser below:

LIDENFILMS also released a visual to celebrate the announcement:

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows:
“Far to the north of the world lies Hell’s Gate, a portal formerly used by the Demon Lord to invade the human realm. Thanks to the legendary hero Shion Bladearts, wielder of Excalibur, and his loyal band of companions, the Gate was sealed off and the demonic threat was vanquished.
Unfortunately, the seal was incomplete and has begun to weaken, allowing the demons to once again begin their attack. Worried about the safety of his village, selfish and perverted farmer Touka Scott digs pitfalls to defend against the demons. But fear not, for Shion is on his way to reseal Hell’s Gate and save humanity!
Or at least he was, because the legendary hero is dead, having fallen into one of the pitfalls of Touka Scott. Luckily, dealing with the dead is the specialty of necromancer Anri Haynesworth. While she can’t revive him, Anri can at least salvage their quest by forcing Touka’s soul into Shion’s rotting body and dragging him along to Hell’s Gate in Shion’s place. Not wanting to be left behind, Touka’s childhood friend Yuna Yunis tags along. Together, the three of them set out as what just might be the most unsuitable party to ever try to save the world!”
While there is not a specific release date, LIDENFILMS has said the anime will premier sometime in 2023.

Meta To Open Its First ‘Meta Store’ This May In California

Meta, the Facebook company that is all about VR experiences and totally not collecting and selling the data of its users, is going to be opening a physical location in Burlingame, California. The ‘Meta Store’ will be doing business with the public on May 9th. This initial location is just south of San Francisco.
Now, what could you possibly buy at a store like this? Ars Technica is reporting that visitors will be able to pick up and/or test out the Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus) and the system’s various accessories. Or you could go to your local Target or Best Buy.
Those looking to overpay for RayBans can try on the new Meta-powered sunglasses. However, if you decide to purchase the Ray-Ban Stories shades, you’ll have to do so on Ray-Ban.com. The sunglasses with the built-in camera and speakers run about $329 each.
Pictures from inside the retail space are what you’d expect. It’s minimalist, like an Apple Store, but with fewer portentous faux socialists and $1k monitor stands.

Meta
Meta
Meta
The 1,500-square-foot space will most likely be sparse mainly because there are not many Meta devices on the market. Aside from the Quest 2 and a handful of accessories, the brand carries nothing else. Currently, the Quest’s only other function is to act as a VR headset for your PC. This may change if Meta partners with Microsoft to take on Sony’s upcoming Playstation VR successor.
Don’t expect a lot of third-party Quest 2 parts, either. Judging by the images Meta released, everything on the shelves bears the official branding. So, get ready to pay $50-$80 for that USB-C cable. Ugh.
I would not mind visiting the location if only to test out some of the VR games that I don’t have room to play inside my studio. However, once the novelty wears off, which will be quick, how long will Meta maintain the space before handing sales duties back over to other brick and mortar stores?

Miyamoto Announces Super Mario Bros. Movie Is Pushed Back To 2023

If you were hoping to spend this Christmas with Mario and Luigi at the cinema, we’ve got some bad news for you. However, we’ve got good news for those out there who have been concerned about Illumination adapting the long-running Nintendo franchise!
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and overall Nintendo legend, has announced that the Super Mario Bros. movie will be delayed until Spring of next year. Originally the film was going to premiere during the 2022 holiday season.
Via Nintendo’s official Twitter account, Miyamoto had the following to say:

“After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

Last year we learned that Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt, was going to be voicing the legendary Italian plumber turned hero. Rather than going for a cast of veteran voice actors, the animated feature was going to have an all-star roster. Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen are also in the mix as part of the main cast.
Suppose I were going to be cynical (which I usually am), I’d wager that the film’s story is going to lean heavily on topical humor. What other guesses can I make? Um, maybe a Mario rap and a skateboarding or snowboarding scene. You know I’m right.

Is there enough material to make a feature-length movie with Mario and Luigi? It was stretched pretty thin in ’93 when Max Headroom‘s Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton were sharing the director’s chair. I’m not knocking that original movie, and I love it.
What do you think of the casting and the delay? Let us know in the comments section below.
