Transformers ’86 Rumble Is Here, But Where Is Soundwave?!

0

First, we crack the shell. Then we crack the nuts inside! Rumble may be small, but he makes up for it with sass and powerful jackhammer arms! The cassette-sized Decepticon has now joined the Transformers: The Movie line as a Core figure, meaning he’s small and easy on the budget. But the issue here is we still don’t have an ’86 Soundwave!

I know that a Soundwave that would fit in the 86 line is out there because he was released before, just not with the TF: TM branding on his box. So, what’s the holdup? Hell, Wheelie got a figure before Soundwave! Even Ironhide and Ratchet made it to market quicker than one of the most popular Transformers. I think the last G1-styled Soundwave in the right scale was from the War for Cybertron 3-pack. Even then, that figure was a little wonky with his hollow forearms and super skinny biceps.

Currently, the only Soundwave figures on the market that could take cassettes are the Bumblebee and Generations versions. However, neither of these transforms into a stereo. Of course, you could always hide Rumble in Blaster. Or, if you want to throw down $62.99, there’s the IDW Shattered Glass Soundwave, who does, in fact, disguise himself as a stereo. The catch? He’s mainly white and comes with a weird green headband.

If you want to go old school, there’s always the J. Balvin version. I’m not sure if the newer cassette figures will fit in an actual G1 Soundwave, but you can always take a shot. That figure is currently in stock and is priced at $69.99. He comes with recolored versions of Ravage and Laserbeak.

Which Soundwave minions were your favorites? Did you quickly lose their accessories as I did? I found one of Laserbeaks blasters I’d misplaced in the ’80s inside a random box of VHS tapes. Hmmm…

Diamond Offers A New Blade Figure And Awkward Namor Statue

Before we look at the weird Namor statue, let’s take a moment to admire how badass this Marvel Select Blade figure is. He’s up for pre-order now at Diamond Select, but he’s missing several accessories, it looks like. This probably isn’t the finalized version of the vampire hunter, but even so, he looks far better than most of the stuff we’re seeing from Marvel Legends right now. Oh, and this figure still comes in display-friendly packaging.

The fearless vampire hunter Blade has arrived in the Marvel Select action figure line, and he is ready for war! Equipped with an arsenal of weapons, including sword, guns, stakes and more, the Daywalker also includes interchangeable normal and vamped-out heads. Standing approximately 7 inches tall, this collector-edition action figure features 16 points of articulation and comes in display-ready Select action figure packaging, with side panel artwork for shelf reference.

I’m sorry, but every time I see the new Namor as far as merchandise is concerned, he looks like he’s not too thrilled to be part of the MCU. The action figure that’s out at Target now looks like he’s worried he forgot to lock his car, which he parked in a bad part of LA.

The awkwardness was there even in this new diorama from Diamond Select. Is that Freddy Prinze Jr. playing a lifeguard who wants to throw hands with some rowdy kids on the beach? What is this?! Well, it’s a $59.99 chunk of PVC. That’s all I really know.

The long wait is over! Not only is the highly anticipated Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever, almost here, we’re this close to the debut of Namor the Sub-Mariner in live action! To celebrate, DST is offering a new Gallery Diorama of the crown prince of Atlantis, coming to stores next year! Measuring approximately 10 inches tall, this sculpture is made of high-quality PVC and comes packaged in a full-color window box.

Oh, man. I hope that Namor is better in action once he shows up in Wakanda Forever because all these weird stylistic choices and changes to his origins are adding to some unintentional hilarity.

Can Hasbro Win Back Customers With Pre-Disney Star Wars Stuff?

Hasbro has been trying everything to keep Star Wars items from becoming peg warmers. I’ve seen so many Bespin and Skiff Guard Landos over the past month just sitting there. Not to mention the plethora of Bill Burr action figures that just won’t sell. As far as toys go, interest in the overall brand may be dead, and Hasbro is not helping.

With the move towards windowless boxes, the decades-old toy company is taking away one of the reasons we collect: to display! If the box only has an image of a CGI model of the toy, why the hell would I put that up on my shelf? It killed my desire to collect Marvel Legends. So now it has come to claim the little remaining hope I had for the Star Wars toy line.

Yet, the company keeps plugging along, announcing a new Clone Trooper electronic helmet for $131.99. They’re not entirely screen accurate, but for those of us who don’t want to shell out $700+ for a Denuo Novo helmet, it will do just fine. Like the previous trooper helmets, this one also comes with a voice distortion effect built into the replica, powered by 1 AAA battery. Expect this to be out by May 1st, 2023.

Luke’s appearance in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett meant that Hasbro needed to make more Skywalker merchandise. He already has multiple new action figures on the way, and it looks like his lightsaber is being reissued with some much need improvements. OK, I didn’t mean to get your hopes up if you thought Hasbro may have finally done with other saber makers figured out years ago and made a hilt that doesn’t require a bulky emitter. But, nope, we’re still playing this game where half of the hilt has to be swapped out just so you can insert the LED blade. Good grief. And Hasbro still wants $278.99 for this, according to Figures.com.

Sigh. Well, the improvements come in the form of adding the following features: wall-cutting effect, blaster deflect, clash effects, duel effect, and “battle sequence.” It’ll show up on Hasbro Pulse tomorrow for pre-order.

Over at Pirates and Princesses, we covered the news that Hasbro was releasing new retro Kenner figures from the original Return of the Jedi line. It’s kind of cool in a nostalgic way, but the display options are limited when each figure has a huge RETRO label splattered right across the card. Speaking of Hasbro ruining collectors’ ways of displaying things, it looks like the Black Series is officially moving towards windowless boxes for all 6″ figures. Oh boy!

I knew that some of The Mandalorian figures were doing this, but it made sense when the figures included a playset feature or large accessory. This matches the old Kenner ways, but why is it hidden behind cardboard and mystery when it’s a stand-alone figure, especially a one-off variant? Case in point is the Halloween Edition Wookie and Bogling. I don’t think Hasbro has before made a Halloween version of a Black Series figure.

It’s basically a Wookie with cat ears and a jack-o-lantern beskar bucket. Nothing fancy, but totally display-worthy. Yet, you can’t show off the figure because these new boxes are free of plastic. However, you can show off an image of the rendered model of the action figure. Exciting as hell, ain’t it, kids?! Oh, and according to Entertainment Earth, this guy isn’t shipping until December, totally missing the holiday this year. So I’ll keep my $27.99; thank you.

Discotek Media To Release ‘Urusei Yatsura Always My Darling’ On Blu-Ray

0

Coming to a Blu-ray release, ‘Urusei Yatsura Always My Darling’ the sixth and final film from the anime. Directed by Katsuhisa Yamada, the movie was first released to Japanese theaters in 1991 and would be made available to international audiences later. Now Discotek Media is releasing it on home video, featuring both the original Japanese cast and the English dubbed version.

The original teaser is available as a special feature.

You can watch the 10th-anniversary trailer below:

The movie was produced by Kitty Films and animated by Madhouse with Mitsuru Kotaki composing the music. It would be the last film in the original franchise until a 2012 OVA. It was distributed by Argo Project instead of Toho, which had released the previous entries.

Right Stuf Anime describes the synopsis as follows,

“You thought The Final Chapter was the last Urusei Yatsura movie? Nope, sorry! This time around there’s a girl named Lupica – there’s always a girl with an outlandish name in these movies – and she’s out to kidnap the most lecherous person in the universe! That’s Ataru Moroboshi, of course, and for some insanely contrived reasons he’s the only person alive who is able to snatch a mystical love potion. A love potion Lupica wants to win the heart of a mild-mannered intergalactic tofu deliveryman. She could just ask him out, but she’s too scared to, so instead decides brainwashing is the way to go. Things don’t go to plan, of course, and the love potion ends up being used on Ataru instead! He starts to go crazy and also bark like a dog for some reason, but that’s okay, because he was already a dog to begin with. Lum tries to save him despite this, the citizens of Tomobiki get really mad about the chaos, and it’s all a big mess, really.”

The set is available for pre-order on Right Stuf Anime.

Marlon Wayans Says Comedies Like ‘White Chicks’ Are “Needed”

In this age of hypersensitivity from certain sectors on the internet, Hollywood studios have changed on they handle certain genres. That includes comedies. In the media, it is popular to pick an old feature film or television show and nitpick it, searching for something to criticize about it. There is some pushback on this from some creators.

Actor and writer Marlon Wayans was being interviewed by BuzzFeed and when asked if his past works, specifically ‘White Chicks,’ could be made today with a “stricter form of censorship.”

“I think they’re needed,” the ‘Scary Movie’ star said. “I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled. If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor.”

Wayans discussed the aversions to certain types of comedy and declares he “ain’t listening” to voices saying he should self-censor.

“It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore,” he continued. “I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-ass people, these scared executives. Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself.”

He added, “I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”

‘White Chicks’ is a 2004 comedy film where Marlon and Shawn Wayans play FBI Agents disguised as two caucasian women who have to infiltrate a fashion event. While the movie was critically panned, it was a small hit at the box office. It was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans.

Batman and the Bat-Family are definitely at the forefront on both individual issues and collected editions.

Damien Wayne As Robin Is Mezco’s Next One:12 Figure

If your ex came up to you and said she lied about having a miscarriage and then presented you with a trained killer as your son, what would you do? Of course, if you’re Batman, you just sort of roll with it, I guess. Thus why we’ve been dealing with Damian Wayne since 2006. Regardless of his popularity, the child of the Bat and Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter has earned his place amongst all those wearing Robin’s cowl.

After several Batman figures, we’re finally moving on to Damien in Mezco’s One:12 Collective series. While I may not be a fan of the character, I do like his Robin outfit. It looks less flamboyant than the Dick Grayson version and improves on some of the things we saw evolve over the years with Tim Drake’s costume. Damien is due out around next Summer.

Mezco

Mezco

Damien is priced in the typical range for One:12 figures, $95, but he is not all that impressive regarding the extras. Damien isn’t exactly accessory-heavy, but he comes with enough to give him some decent display options:

  • Three (3) head portraits
  • Eleven (11) interchangeable hands
    • One (1) pair of fists (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of bow holding hands (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of katana/bo staff holding hands (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of birdarang holding hands (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of posing hands (L&R)
    • One (1) relaxed hand (L)
  • Hooded, serrated cape with integrated posing wire
  • Face mask (removable)
  • Armored tunic with ‘R’ insignia
  • Fitted bodysuit
  • Wrist gauntlets
  • SAP gloves
  • Utility belt (removable)
  • Boots
  • One (1) bo staff
  • One (1) katana
  • One (1) bow
  • Three (3) arrows
  • Three (3) small birdarangs
  • Two (2) medium birdarangs
  • One (1) large birdarang
  • One (1) birdarang throwing FX
  • One (1) grapple gun wrist mount with open hook & integrated posing wire (attaches to wrist)
  • One (1) One:12 Collective display base with logo
  • One (1) One:12 Collective adjustable display post

I never really got into the whole Damien Wayne bit of Batman lore. At first, I thought it would be a short-lived fluke like so many other “kid” characters, but he has stuck around for years. Is he popular? What do you think of the young spawn of Bruce and Talia? Let us know in the comments section below.

Former Classic G4TV Technical Director Comments on New G4TV Closing – Our Past Needed To Be Fixed?

In the wake of the relaunched G4TV network shutting down in under a year, many have taken to social media to express their views on how Comcast handled resurrecting the doomed brand. While everyone felt empathy for those who lost their jobs, others debated on who or what was to blame for the network failing a second time. Some of the former new G4TV hosts and personalities shared their thoughts online after the cancellation, but other thoughts from former classic G4TV posted and shared their views on everything leading up to how it all went down.

Chris Flynn is a former G4TV technical director who worked at the network from 2006 to 2012, up to when the network was canceled. He oversaw many of the technical elements of the shows being aired at the time, including effects and camera shots for Attack of the Show and more. Chris also worked for various productions at different studios in Hollywood, before and after the original G4TV was live on air. Like many alumni from the original version of the network, Chris had many opinions and thoughts to share about the new G4TV shutting down, including insight into the information he learned as things went south.

“I felt they came back with a hollowed-out version of Attack of the Show… I had advanced knowledge through inside sources six weeks ahead of time what they were doing and what the plan was… ” Sitting down for an interview with YouTube channel VGx7, Chris details that his source, who was rehired by G4TV, informed him that the ones in charge of the network had no intention of bringing back the older shows that were popular from classic G4TV. Everything was going to focus on what was new, including a big connection to eSports. He also goes on to note towards the later part of the interview that the campaign #G4NeedsTalent was also a complete mess, where most of the talent added to the network was already decided well in advance.

According to Chris’ sources, the network was very scattered and didn’t even figure out or have a crew as close to around 2 weeks prior to the relaunch. Many people didn’t know how to approach making things work. Stories coming out of the network were very bad according to what Chris was being told by his sources. Some executives on shows and other people running wild and not doing much for nearly the whole timeframe of G4TV’s Summer Beach House.

“You had people who were supposedly running things and building the company, and yet when the director would come in they would be like ‘thank god you’re here’… This was the people who were the showrunners…” Things got crazy enough that conflict between staff caused a lot of tension, with the shock of working on a real production schedule and trying to maintain order within the production caused some people to leave.

One of the big issues Chris notes from new content produced for new G4TV was the rotation of the hosts and lackluster gags. Instead of having personalities tied to specific shows, newer content would cycle the pool of talent and underutilize them. Some of the hosts would linger in the background during segments looking bored, rather than allowing them to connect with the audience on the shows they were featured. “Typical TV would have two dedicated hosts… instead of having everyone else twiddling their thumbs on the bench, they would be a role player on the bench… Everyone has a role to play…”

In the interview, Chris also goes on to discuss the differences in the talent between some of the newer hosts and the older hosts. He notes many things that worked for new hosts coming from Twitch backgrounds didn’t work for the audience watching, where the same kinds of gags would be rinsed and repeated when they didn’t always work. “One day Goldenboy is on Boosted, the next he’s just sitting on a couch… they clearly felt like they were under-utilized, the whole thing was a disaster… These people are just going to be sitting on a couch?”

Speaking on the layoffs, Chris expressed sympathy for those getting laid off most recently, with some people not even receiving severance pay after the new G4TV shutdown. “The first group that got laid off got 4 to 6 months’ severance… apparently this last group didn’t get any severance… And some were trying to figure out how to get their personal belongings back because they couldn’t get back into the studio…”

One of the more interesting bits to come from the interview was Chris’ thoughts on how things transpired with controversial host Indiana “Froskurin” Black and her speech to the audience. “I understand you’re all going to do whatever you want, you are new G4 and I respect…just don’t screw with our legacy. Once you had Frosk telling everyone to go to hell… now you’re messing with our legacy. You’re taking all that love and nostalgia that people had for us, and they were now questioning it…”

Chris went on to talk about some of the backlash and fallout from Indiana Black’s posts on Twitter, including the now infamous tweet right after the first batch of layoffs. “This is a person who needs to go away from social media, needs to stop talking in public… Just stop… She said ‘our mandate was to fix the past’… Hold on a second, our past needed to be fixed? … We lasted 12 years, launched the careers of Olivia Munn and Chris Hardwick… You all crashed and burned in 11 months, and Frosk says she’s leaving the business… How can you say we needed to be fixed?”

The rest of the interview with Chris goes on to discuss other aspects of how the older version of G4TV was made, including parts of the production that were vastly different from the new G4TV. For fans of the network who were eager to watch and disappointed with how it all turned out, the interview is a fascinating discussion about the past and present of G4TV. You can find and watch the full interview here. Post in the comments below your thoughts about what happened to the new G4TV and what you think about the interview with Chris Flynn!

HiDive Nabs ‘Lupin Zero’ Anime For Streaming

0

Anime fans will get to see the an early story for gentleman thief Lupin III in the upcoming prequel show ‘Lupin Zero’ from TMS Entertainment. Set for a December 2022 release, HiDive has announced that they will stream the animated series to a North American audience.

“HIDIVE, home of the LUPIN THE 3RD anime series, has acquired exclusive rights to the new spin-off series LUPIN ZERO,” they said online. “Set in the 1960s during Japan’s Showa Era, this original anime story centers on a teenaged Lupin III and delves into his untold origins as the world’s greatest thief. LUPIN ZERO will run for six episodes and debuts on Sunday, December 16 on HIDIVE.”

The anime will be directed by Daisuke Sakou, character designs are being handled by Asami Taguchi, and Ichirou Okouchi acts as series supervisor.

HiDive President and General Manager John Ledford celebrated the acquisition, saying, “We’re thrilled to launch the new original anime LUPIN ZERO this December as an exclusive series only available on HIDIVE, home of the LUPIN THE 3RD anime series.”

“Lupin III has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years and this fan-favorite character is returning with all new mysteries – but this time as a teenager in junior high in 1960’s Tokyo. This new action series will not disappoint,” he added.

A trailer was released to promote the series:

In a press release obtained by Lupin Central, the show is described as follows,

“The LUPIN ZERO anime features a young, nameless, Lupin III running around the streets of 1960s Japan during the economic boom — the era simultaneous to Monkey Punch’s release of the manga.

How did this young boy become notorious gentleman thief “Lupin III”?

Since the initial serialization of Monkey Punch’s globally renowned “LUPIN THE 3rd” manga in 1967, Lupin III has taken the world by storm and has appeared in various media. However, despite his long-standing status and notoriety as the world’s greatest thief, there was once a time when even Lupin III, was young and inexperienced.

Loosely based on Young Lupin III from the original manga, LUPIN ZERO will tell a nostalgic, yet brand new original story, finally lifting the veil cast upon Lupin III’s humble beginnings. Set during the era in which the original series was first published, the anime depicts Young Lupin III running around the streets of 1960s Japan during the country’s economic boom.”

‘Lupin the 3rd’ is based on manga series written and illustrated by Monkey Punch whose original run began in 1967 and concluded in 1981. It would continue on under other writers and receive numerous anime content including TV shows and feature films.
