Review: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion – Remastering Dreams

If you follow all of the different spinoff releases within the compilation of Final Fantasy VII, you’ll remember that Crisis Core FFVII was a prequel released on the PlayStation Portable. Beforehand, fans of Final Fantasy VII never had a detailed backstory about Zack Fair, an important character that has a significant impact on Cloud and his friends from that game. Crisis Core fleshes out the events prior to the RPG classic and what led up to the start of the story we see play out, which received a lot of praise. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion on the PlayStation 5 is a remastering of the original PSP game, with a big upgrade to the visuals and soundtrack. But that’s not the only thing you’ll find that’s different about this new version of the game.

The presentation of Crisis Core feels more in line with Final Fantasy VII Remake. Not only are the character models and backgrounds during gameplay much better looking than the original, but the music and sounds have also been remixed. While there are a few tracks Crisis Core fans may prefer from the original over the remixes, one cannot deny how good Crisis Core Reunion looks and sounds overall. For a remastering of the original game, every edges closer to remake territory in terms of quality. While Crisis Core Reunion is on multiple platforms, the fresh presentation really shines on the PlayStation 5 where you can get the full effect of polish and smooth framerate. The story itself is the same as before and still a rollercoaster, especially if you know anything about the story of Final Fantasy VII, but it benefits from the visual overhaul very nicely.

Another part of this however is the recasting of voice actors. Everyone sounds different than their original release counterparts, for better or worse. Zack still sounds carefree and serious when he needs to be, which is good for the story, but there is some dialogue that isn’t always delivered very well. The same goes for other characters like Sephiroth as well, along with a few others, who have some very awkward line delivery at times. Some of the dialogue in the original had the same issue, but within Crisis Core Reunion it can occasionally sound worse.

The Japanese voice track does remedy some of this, but the subtitles may not always sync up with the spoken dialogue. Whether you like the new voice actors in their roles will be entirely different for everyone, but voices are more consistent with what we get in Final Fantasy VII Remake and the new games from Square Enix related to Final Fantasy VII overall.

But that’s not the only thing different about this version of Crisis Core. The gameplay has undergone a few changes, specifically the combat. You still have the ability to equip materia and use their abilities in battle, which is exactly the same as the original release. However, now combat isn’t sluggish and feels more like a fast-paced action game. Zack can attack enemies and combo into AP attacks or magic for extra damage, as well as stun enemies and exploit weaknesses at critical moments.

The DMW slot from the original game is still here, but it feels more effective and un-intrusive despite its randomness. When the slot triggers a Limit Break you have the choice of using it at the moment or waiting a bit before executing it, giving you more control over the flow of combat and saving your big attacks for key moments. It also helps that every Limit Break you gain looks great and can sometimes trigger a small cutscene you can skip at any time.

Moving around with Zack feels so much better than before, with the ability to sprint ahead and explore the area around you a lot faster. The camera also feels smoother to move around when getting a view of the environment, even though it still has moments where it can get blocked by objects or enemies. Luckily you can adjust things faster, smoother, and not get stifled by its viewpoint. Some of the quirks from the original release are here as well, including the ability to avoid battles by hugging the side of the area to skip encounters in most sections.

The tougher enemies and sections are still as tough as before, so you’ll have to do a bit of grinding by finishing the side missions you have access to via the menu and at save points. Leveling up feels a bit faster than before as well, despite not much changing with how you level Zack up by defeating enemies. The randomness of the DMW and uncertainty of leveling from the original Crisis Core is still here, but it doesn’t come off as prevalent as it did before. If you do more side missions or finish more encounters, you’ll definitely feel like progress is being made with Zack’s overall strength.

As a total package, do players need to play anything Final Fantasy VII related to enjoy Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion? No, you can go into this with a basic understanding or shallow knowledge of that game. You don’t even need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake to follow this story. But you will get the most that Crisis Core has to offer if you have beforehand. The gameplay and presentation are a huge step up from the original release, making this the best way to play through Crisis Core if you haven’t yet, especially on the PlayStation 5.

NECA Reveals The Phantom And Elton John Action Figures

When I think of music, two things come to mind: Elton John and a sewer-living ghoul hungry for love. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the two apart, given the recent unpleasantness on Twitter, but the ghoul I’m speaking of is Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera. Thankfully, NECA just announced that both musicians would be hitting stores in action figures form this coming Summer.

The Phantom is part of NECA’s “Ultimate” line of action figures. The classic Universal Monster stands 7″ tall and comes with multiple faces, a velvet-like cloak, and lots of articulation. NECA even includes the unnerving mask the Phantom uses to hide his hideous face. It’s got those dead eyes and everything. Ugh.

On a lighter note, the Elton John “Live in ’76” figure looks great. Decked out in patriotic garb, this 8″ tall representation of the legend comes with a piano, mic, stool, and multiple heads. NECA did a pretty solid job recreating Elton’s look from the Louder Than Concorde (But Not Quite As Pretty) Tour. So does this mean a Pinball Wizard version is in the near future?

Celebrating more horror legends, NECA is excited to reveal The Phantom of the Opera! Starring Lon Chaney, the 1925 silent movie was famed for the shocking appearance of the Phantom, which Chaney created himself and kept secret until the premiere.

In partnership with Elton John, NECA has produced a second deluxe tribute to the legend and his profound influence on both music and fashion.

I’d really like a Lon Chaney action figure, complete with a scaled dressing room and special effects kit. The man is so known for his creatures that the actor gets lost in the icons he created. Come on, NECA. You know an Ultimate Lon Chaney with interchangeable heads and a load of accessories would sell well. Get on it!

Amazon Studios Announces Season 2 ‘The Rings Power’ Directors

Amazon Studios announced that they had recruited new directors for the second season of their Middle Earth adaptation ‘The Rings of Power.’

They said in a press release, “The three directors – Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Louise Hooper – will each be at the helm of multiple episodes for season two. Brändström, who directed two highly acclaimed episodes of The Rings of Power’s first season (106/“Udûn” and 107/“The Eye”), will be directing four episodes and will also serve as co-executive producer for the series this season. Hamri and Hooper will each be directing two episodes. Brändström and Hamri also have overall deals with Amazon Studios.”

As Clownfish previously reported, ‘The Rings of Power’ has also expanded on its casting with new additional actors and actresses added to the upcoming second season.

You can watch the trailer for the show below:

Amazon describes the show as follows,

“The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”

‘The Rings of Power’ is based on the works of British author J.R.R. Tolkien.

‘Iron Man’ Flies Into The National Film Registry

The Library of Congress announced their list of movies to be inducted into the National Film Registry which includes the feature that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the 2008 film ‘Iron Man. ‘

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said in a press release, “Films have become absolutely central to American culture by helping tell our national story for more than 125 years. We are proud to add 25 more films by a group of vibrant and diverse filmmakers to the National Film Registry as we preserve our cinematic heritage.”

“We’re grateful to the entire film community for collaborating with the Library of Congress to ensure these films are preserved for the future,” she added.

The adaption of the character co-created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby starred Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Gwyneth Paltrow as love interest Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as assistant Happy Hogan, Terrence Howard as James Rhodes, and Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane. Paramount Pictures handled the production while Favreau directed the film and its 2010 sequel ‘Iron Man 2.’

‘Iron Man’ would go on to be nominated for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects at the 81st Academy Awards and would be listed in the top 10 lists of 2008 by the American Film Institute.

After the conclusion of his tenure as Iron Man with ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ CinemaBlend reports that Robert Downey Jr. said, “I’ve done all I could with that character and can do other things now. Now, being middle-aged, you start looking at the back nine and realize this is all part of the journey and things end. I am fortunate and eternally grateful to have wound up where I have.”

“Each project is different. Playing Tony/Iron Man was hard and I dug deep. I had an incredible 10-year run that was creatively satisfying,” he added.

You can watch the trailer for ‘Iron Man’ below:

CNN notes that others on the list include the films ‘The Little Mermaid,’ the musical ‘Hairspray,’ the romantic comedy ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ the Stephen King adaption ‘Carrie,’ and the 1950 film version of ‘Cyrano de Bergerac.’

Recreate Anakin’s Lust For Padmé With New Hot Toys Figures

Out of nowhere, Hot Toys has decided to return to the Prequel Trilogy for the following two Star Wars 1/6th scale figures. Straight out of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Hot Toys’ Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala action figures are ready to get a little too friendly with each other.

Hot Toys has included many features and accessories for both collectibles, but Anakin wins out. He has two LED-powered lightsabers, complete with motion effects. Although the former Queen of Naboo isn’t accessory-heavy, she does sport an incredible likeness of Natalie Portman and a form-fitting outfit.

Pre-orders have started for these two over at Sideshow Collectibles. Padmé is going for $270, while our sand-hating, youngling-slaughtering lover-boy is $279. These two will ship out sometime during the first half of 2024.

I’m not a fan of the prequels, but I admire the level of detail and artistry that went into recreating Padmé and Anakin’s costumes and face sculpts. Oh, no… people are going to do bad things to the Natalie Portman figure, aren’t they?

New Transformers Ultimates: Dead Starscream & Purple Megatron

Starscream getting royally f’d up and Megatron getting reformatted are the two newest figures to make their way into Super7’s Ultimates Transformers toy line. The two new additions will be released late next year and are priced at $55 each. I’m surprised that Super7 didn’t release a throne for the fallen King Starscream. Maybe next time.

I don’t think a regular version of Megatron’s righthand usurper has been made for Ultimates yet. Strange. Maybe Transformers Ultimates are more focused on iconic parts of the franchise’s past rather than pumping out every character as we saw with ThunderCats Ultimates. If that’s the case, I can dig it. Now, make a Ultimates version of the prototype Unicron.

Starscream thought it was finally his moment to rule the Decepticons, but how wrong he was!

The fallen Decepticon leader comes with the following:

  • 3x Interchangeable heads
    • 1x Agonized crumbling head
    • 1x Smirking head
    • 1x Frowning head
  • 6x Interchangeable hands
    • 2x Fist hands
    • 2x Trigger hands
    • 1x Open hand
    • 1x Expressive hand
  • 1x Crown (removable)

Unicron has reformatted Megatron into the even more intimidating Galvatron!

Even though Megatron didn’t do much in this scene aside from floating in space, Super7 was nice enough to include multiple heads and hands:

  • 2x Interchangeable heads
    • 1x Neutral head
    • 1x Damaged head
  • 8x Interchangeable hands
    • 2x Open hands
    • 2x Trigger hands
    • 2x Fist hands
    • 2x Expressive hands

I’m not exactly thrilled that the Transformers Ultimates are starting to do re-issues/repaints already, but at least both figures are athletically significant departures from their previous figures. Instead of Starscream’s Ghost, we’ve got Starscream’s Corpse! Yeah, I know. These variations will end up in the discount bin at Entertainment Earth, just like Optimus Prime and Toxie did this year.

I advise waiting a few months after these figures release if you don’t want to drop $55 on each one.

A Life-size Bust of Ōkami Amaterasu Is Coming Soon!

0

Another week has passed, and First4Figures has announced another statue. However, instead of focusing on Sonic, Zelda, or Castlevania, the collectibles company is returning to the much-beloved game Ōkami. The Sun Goddess in her white wolf form is now available to own as a 26.5″ tall bust.

As with every other time we cover First4Figures statues, there are multiple versions. Thankfully, there are only two this time: the regular and the exclusive. The only thing that separates the two is the implementation of LEDs in the flames and Issun’s bubble. The price difference isn’t all that drastic, either. The regular edition is currently going for $709.99, and the exclusive one is $749.99.

The busts are expected to ship during the first quarter of 2023. The statues measure 26.5″ tall, 16″ wide, and 23″ deep. I’d love to tell you what you need to power up the exclusive edition’s LED effect, but First4Figures failed to put that in the product’s description. Based on previous collectibles we’ve covered, it’s probably a USB-C plug-in (not included).

First 4 Figures is proud to present Okami Amaterasu Life Size Bust. She stands at 26.5 inches tall from the top of Issun’s glowing orb to the rotatable base making for a simply stunning display centerpiece for any Okami fan. Comes in deluxe full-color packaging, hand numbered base and an authenticity card that allows you to purchase the same product number for future pieces in the Okami series.

If you want to replay the 2007 Clover Studio / Capcom classic, check out the HD re-release on XBOX and Playstation. Ōkami is currently $19.99 on both platforms. If that’s not enough, you can also play as Amaterasu in Marvel VS Capcom 3.

DC Comics Announces ‘Superman: Lost’ Miniseries From ‘Batman Vs. Deathstroke’ Writer Christopher Priest

0

Prolific comic book writer Christopher Priest (Vampirella, Justice League, Black Panther) returns to the pages of DC Comics with artist Carlo Pagulayan (Elektra, Wonder Woman, WTC Tribute Book) for the upcoming ten-part series ‘Superman Lost.’ The story will center on Superman returning from a mission only for him to inform his friends that he has been gone for two decades.

DC Comics says on its website,

“After Superman is called away on a routine Justice League mission, Lois Lane awakens to find a complete stranger standing in her living room. The Man of Steel, home much sooner than expected, reveals he has, in fact, been lost in space for 20 years. Nothing and no one seems familiar to him anymore, and the timeless bond between them has been severed…or has it? Can love conquer all? Superman’s 85th-anniversary celebration continues with this all-new blockbuster 10-issue, self-contained series from the creators of the Eisner-nominated Deathstroke series!”

Priest said about the series, “Superman: Lost has been several years in the making and it’s been incredibly difficult for me to keep quiet about this.”

“I am absolutely delighted to be reunited with my Deathstroke team as we explore the emotional toll a tragic loss exacts. A man of steel, from an alien species, is ultimately the most human among us. And finding his way home is only the beginning,” he added.

DC Comics also revealed the first issue cover by Pagulayan and Jason Paz:

The first issue of the limited series is set to debut on March 14th, 2023.

Priest and Pagulayan worked together on the DC Rebirth version of Deathstroke, which included the ‘Batman Vs. Deathstroke’ story arc. In that series, the Dark Knight and the Terminator go head-to-head when Talia al Ghul claims that Damian Wayne is actually the son of Slade Wilson, not Bruce Wayne.

Tubi To Stream Horror Flick ‘Bed Rest’

0

Tubi has struck a deal with STX Films to stream their latest horror film ‘Bed Rest,’ starring Melissa Barrera, who is also a producer for the flick, and directed by Lori Evans Taylor in her feature film directorial debut. The movie’s production was handled by Project X Entertainment and Bondit Media while STX International acquired the distribution rights.

Barrera expressed excitement for the deal, saying in a statement, “As a first-time producer, it is my profound pleasure to be partnering with Tubi to bring BED REST to a savvy and engaged audience.”

“While on the surface, BED REST is a horror film, it is a story that will resonate deeply with anyone who’s experienced grief and been haunted by loss. Lori Evans Taylor has created a deeply emotional journey for audiences, and I’m grateful to my partners at Project X and STX for bringing us together to share this story with the world,” she added.

Besides Barrera (Scream), the movie also stars Guy Burnet (Pitch Perfect 3), Edie Inksetter (Spiral), Sebastian Billingsley-Rodriguez (Love, Guaranteed), Erik Athavale (Sniper: Rogue Mission), Kristen Sawatzky (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil), and Paul Essiembre (The Ice Road).

You can watch the trailer below:

Tubi describes the synopsis as follows,

“After years of struggling to start a family, Julie Rivers (Barrera) is pregnant again and moving into a new home with her husband as they embrace a fresh start. Upon being ordered to mandatory bed rest, Julie begins to slowly unravel as she suffers through the monotony and anxiety of her new constraints. Soon, terrifying ghostly experiences in the home begin to close in on Julie, stirring up her past demons and causing others to question her mental stability. Trapped and forced to face her past, and the supernatural, Julie fights to protect herself and her unborn baby.”

The movie is produced by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein.

Mister Mxyzptlk Causes Cosmic Chaos In A New Justice League Game

0

We’ve all been waiting for a great Justice League game. With a roster of the world’s finest superheroes and villains, there’s no reason why we haven’t seen more games based on these legends. Well, rejoice, fans, because Outright Games is here to solve that issue with a new game titled Justice League: Cosmic Chaos! Mister Mxyzptlk is on the loose, and it’s up to Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman to save the day.

Wait. Outright Games? Oh…

The gameplay looks straightforward, which is usually the case for Outright Games. The company has made a series of similar PAW Patrol titles, which weren’t exactly breaking new ground as far as gameplay goes. These titles are for kids first and foremost. Nothing about the art direction for Just League: Cosmis Chaos tells us otherwise. That’s perfectly fine because the game couldn’t be any worse than their last tie-in game, the ultra boring on-rails shooter, DC League of Super-Pets: The Adventures of Krypto and Ace.

Mister Mxyzptlk is a right bastard from the 5th Dimension. He travels through various realities to be a pain in the backside for DC heroes and villains. He’s typically vanquished when he is tricked into saying his name backward.

Unfortunately, we rarely get to see Mister Mxyzptlk in other media. He’s shown up in DC animated TV series from time to time, but he’s yet to make his big-screen debut in the DCEU. His initial appearance was in Superman #30 over 78 years ago. Mxyzptlk was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Over the years, the character has changed appearances, with his most recognizable incarnation similar to the one seen in our header image. Although, I do like the miniature impish businessman version from the early days. In fact, the same version appeared in the Bruce Timm Superman animated series, voiced perfectly by Gilbert Gottfried.
