Director Shares Update on Sherlock Holmes 3

Audiences may return to Baker Street sooner than expected with Warner Media releasing a third entry into the mystery film series starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson. Though the first two movies were directed by Guy Ritchie, Dexter Fletcher is helming the third film and he seems to be enthusiastic that it will emerge from development limbo.
During an interview with Collider, Fletcher opined, “The pandemic derailed it.” However, he quickly noted, “I do think it will get made. I think it has to be made.”
The film’s production has been delayed twice since the pandemic began with Digital Spy reporting that it has no official release date.
“I don’t know what the timeline of that is, unfortunately, but I believe it should be. It’s fantastic. I think it’s about all the right people being at the right place, at the right time. I think it’s that,” he said. “It’s one of those cruel twists of fate, where the pandemic hit and that scattered people around the world to the wind.”
“But I know that the appetite is huge for it, and I’m sure there are other people acutely aware of that as well,” he continued. “But I believe it should be [made] because it’s brilliant. I very much hope so.”
Warner Media first released ‘Sherlock Holmes’ in 2009 which starred Mark Strong as the villainous Lord Henry Blackwood, an original character not based on a character from the short stories and novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The 2011 ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ starred Jared Harris as Professor James Moriarty, considered Holmes’ greatest villain. Rachel McAdams also starred in both films as Holmes’ romantic foil Irene Adler.
Sherlock Holmes first appeared in ‘A Study In Scarlet’ an 1887 novel written by Doyle.
