Despite ongoing legal issues, the controversial film ‘Rust’ has resumed filming following the announcement that star and producer Alec Baldwin has reached a settlement with victim Halyna Hutchins’ estate. As part of the deal, her widowed husband Matthew Hutchins will be added as executive producer on the film with production resuming in January 2023.
Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed during a shoot in which Baldwin claims he accidentally fired a “prop” gun, later revealed to be a live firearm, which he told was “cold.” He also wounded director Joel Souza in the shoulder. The incident followed reports of safety concerns and conditions the cast and crew were facing during the production. Several other lawsuits were filed and a criminal investigation was started by local authorities.
Mr. Hutchins said in a statement obtained by Deadline, “We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed.”
He added, “The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023. I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin).”
“All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work,” he continued.
Baldwin also issued a statement on social media saying, “We are pleased to announce today the settlement of the civil case filed on behalf of the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation.”
Many commentators have noted Baldwin’s contradictory statements about the incident including some firearm experts, other actors, and pundits who have stated the tragic death could not have occurred the way the actor has described it.
