‘Gran Turismo’ Movie Begins Filming

Sony Pictures announced that their planned movie adaption of the hit video game series ‘Gran Turismo’ has begun filming with ‘District 9’ director Neill Blomkamp helming the production. The movie is the second attempt at bringing the game to the silver screen following a planned 2013 movie with ‘Tron: Legacy’ Joseph Kosinski attached to the project.

“Filming is now underway on (Gran Turismo),” Sony said on Twitter. ” …based on the inspiring true story of a Gran Turismo player, Jann Mardenborough, who won a series of gaming competitions leading him to become an actual professional racecar driver.”

Official social media accounts for the film have launched with most of the shoot being done in Hungary.

The movie stars David Harbour, Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Djimon Hounsou, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Daniel Puig, Josha Stradowski, and Thomas Kretschmann. The script is written by co-executive producer Jason Hall and Zach Baylin.

“As one of PlayStation’s longest standing and most beloved franchises, it’s great to be partnering with Columbia Pictures again to bring Gran Turismo to life in an exciting way,” producer Asad Qizilbash told THR. “We can’t wait for audiences to see Neill’s vision of this inspiring true story of gamer turned professional race car driver.”

The movie is slated to be released in theaters on August 11, 2023.

Clownfish TV previously reported that the movie is a dramatized version of a true story of a teen who played ‘Gran Turismo’ and would go on to become a professional racer. In the film, Harbour will play someone who will teach the teenager how to race in these Nissan competitions after he graduates from GT Academy.

The first ‘Gran Turismo’ was released in 1997 as a Playstation exclusive and has gone on to have seven sequels and received widespread acclaim as a racing game.
