Patreon and Kickstarter are GATEKEEPERS Now?!

Indie Comics Creators BEWARE! Patreon is a PR dumpster fire right now. In the wake of the “Patreon Purge” of Sargon of Akkad and the ensuing fallout, the New York Times publishes an article attempting to paint their Trust and Safety team in a positive light… but it had the OPPOSITE effect, creating even MORE backlash for the troubled crowdfunding platform.

Kickstarter is also policing comics projects not based on the project itself, but on the actions and social media presence of the creator OUTSIDE of Kickstarter.

What does this mean for comic book creators if the platforms they depended on for crowdfunding no longer work as intended?

Maybe it’s time to look to the PAST, as webcomics creators and podcasters have been “crowdfunding” for DECADES without third parties like Patreon.
