Why Celebrity Cameos Like Lizzo and Jack Black Hurt Star Wars Stories

To say that episode 6 of the third season of The Mandalorian has been divisive would be an understatement. While there are many people who enjoy the surprise of seeing Lizzo or Jack Black show up in the Star Wars universe, there are just as many who did not. A lot of the discourse almost always ends up volatile, no matter what side you find yourself on. But many would agree that celebrity cameos in Star Wars media have always been a contentious issue among Star Wars fans. It’s something that has lingered around since the early days of the franchise, for better or worse and doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.

Star Wars is no stranger to cameos or appearances by big-name celebrities who show up briefly for any reason. One cameo in the Star Wars movies was by Daniel Craig in Episode VII: The Force Awakens as a stormtrooper, during a time when he was known to the public as James Bond 007. There’s also the surprise inclusion of George Lucas in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in the background as Anakin Skywalker races to the opera house. It’s almost a blink and you’ll miss it moment. And most recently, The Mandalorian has had a few episodes across its three seasons that included celebrity guests, like Jack Black and Lizzo in one episode. But these examples are all very different from one another and have very different results. One can compliment the story being told, while the other takes away all of the attention from it. If you watched each of them, you already know which one is which.

A cameo is something that is a light inclusion that shouldn’t overshadow the story or universe everyone is in. It’s a small character or part of a story played by a popular actor or celebrity, and shouldn’t be bigger than it needs to be. Even though there are shows where a cameo can be part of the focus of an episode, they still don’t overshadow everything around it and pull you out of the story or universe. That’s the biggest problem with putting an emphasis on cameos of any kind in a Star Wars series or movie. The line between suspension of disbelief and complete distraction is razor thin, especially with more popular celebrities who have their own relevance outside of the Star Wars franchise.

There’s an infamous story about the Star Wars prequel trilogy that gets circulated from time to time about George Lucas when he was casting parts for Episode I: The Phantom Menace. At one point, there were conversations about Michael Jackson playing the part of Jar Jar Binks, but with the use of makeup and prosthetics instead of computer graphics. Ultimately, George Lucas decided to have Ahmed Best be cast as Jar Jar Binks instead of Michael Jackson, despite the latter being the bigger name and popular star. When asked about it, George said that it was because the actor would become bigger than the movie itself, taking the focus out of the story and just on the actor. If he was going to make The Phantom Menace successful at any level, the story had the take the center stage over everything else.

What makes the appearance of Lizzo and Jack Black in The Mandalorian such a prime example of this is how easily their inclusion pulls audiences out of the episode. Not only are the characters they play very different in tone than the rest of the show, but they are also essentially playing themselves and not characters in a galaxy far, far away. The performances from both Jack Black and Lizzo comes off like a copy-and-paste inclusion of the celebrities we know in the real world, emulating their own personalities in this universe. It’s jarring to the audience and sorely sticks out in the worst way.

The characters of The Duchess and Captain Bombardier they play also don’t contribute much to the story of the episode as a whole, let alone any of the Star Wars lore being built within The Mandalorian show. This is only made worse throughout the episode by the poor line delivery from Lizzo and Jack Black when they appear. Both of them over-exaggerate their dialogue in ways that don’t sound very good and are radically different than every other character in the show. For many people, this was a bad mixture and didn’t save the episode by some of the better parts later on, such as the visuals and action sequences with Din Djarin and Bo Katan.

While much of the attention is focused on Lizzo and Jack Black in the episode, the other cameo that didn’t catch as much heat was the appearance of Christopher Lloyd. The beloved Back to the Future actor plays Commissioner Helgait and ends up having a surprise connection to the Star Wars prequels that nobody expected. But what makes his appearance less of an issue for vocal fans is that very reason, because it wasn’t just Christopher Lloyd in the Star Wars universe.

The character he played added something to the universe and felt like it had a purpose. While some aspects of Christopher Lloyd’s acting could be criticized towards the later part of the episode, many fans were willing to accept it more than what had been done by Lizzo and Jack Black. It’s still a cameo by Christopher Lloyd, but not a distracting one that felt aimless or forced.

The concept of cameos isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the approach to cameos in Star Wars shows lately has done more harm than good. Viewers love to be surprised by a celebrity cameo, but they hate when it feels forced and impacts the story in a significantly negative way. It’s hard not to empathize with fans of The Mandalorian who feel disappointed by how their inclusion seemed to overshadow quality storytelling for a show nearing its season finale. If Lizzo and Jack Black had been given better material or direction to work with for the episode, viewers would have received them better. But what we ultimately end up with is another example of poor cameos in the Star Wars galaxy that have done more harm than good. It might be a good idea if Star Wars projects avoided them for a long while.

HBO Max is Relaunching as Max And Combining With Discovery+ Content

It looks like HBO Max will be changing up very soon. Warner Bros. Discovery is going to relaunch HBO Max under a brand new name moving forward. The service will just be known as Max and seen as a means for the company to compete with streaming services from both Disney and Netflix. While existing users can expect similar content to what was available before, Max will combine both Discovery+ and HBO Max content into one place.

According to a report published in the New York Times, sources have said the change can happen as early as May or June 2023. The price for the service will also be set to $16 per month, but will also have multiple tier levels of the service available. This includes an ad-friendly tier service at a lower price that will have commercials that play occasionally. For comparison, HBO Max had its price set at $16 for its ad-free version.

The new Max will give subscribers access to all of the reality shows on Discovery, such as Property Brothers and Dr. Pimple Popper, as well as all of the movies and shows on HBO Max. The joining of both will give a bigger hub of content for fans of the many HBO series that have become incredibly popular, such as shows like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. Will this encourage HBO fans to explore some of the other content coming into the service? Probably not, especially if they prefer to watch original content as opposed to reality TV.

According to sources in various reports, the official unveiling and announcement will be a one-hour event, with no stars from any shows involved. There will be a few movie and TV announcements, along with a heavy focus on the Max service itself. The big question that will be answered during the event is how exactly current HBO Max subscribers will carry over into the new service. Many subscribers are worried about losing their account or having to re-subscribe for something they have already paid for.

One thing to keep in mind is that while Max will become a new service to join, the original Discovery+ app will remain standalone for the time being. It will coexist with Max, but will not have the HBO content that Max will have. A lot of companies with streaming services have been losing money over time, with a number of factors being pointed to as the cause. Whether this will be a successful change or a bad move for Warner Bros. Discovery is anybody’s guess.

Are you interested in checking out Max when it eventually launches? What new details do you want to hear about Max when Warner Bros. Discovery finally talks about it? Post your thoughts in the comments down below and let us know!

Karai Kicks The Rat King Out Of Super7’s TMNT Ultimates!

Last month we covered the 10th wave of Super7’s TMNT Ultimates being announced. We noted that the Rat King figure looked a little too handsome. That complaint must have been widespread because an e-mail from the company today shows Karai is replacing the Rat King.

Super7 had the following to say:

Turtles fans, we heard your feedback about TMNT ULTIMATES! Wave 10, and we agree! Karai has arrived and chased Rat King away, but have no fear; the rodent rascal will be back in TMNT ULTIMATES! Wave 11 with a new and improved look.

The only problem with the Rat King was his face and hair color. He looked way too pretty to be a sewer-dwelling rodent lover. At least Super7 is taking fan complaints into consideration.

Shredder’s 2nd in command is a surprising addition to the series. The focus for the past few waves had been on the whackier variants of Playmates Turtles figures and some fan favorites from the later cartoon episodes.

Karai will come with the following accessories:

  • 3x Interchangeable Heads
    • 1x Headband Head
    • 1x Masked head
    • 1x Foot Clan Leader Head
  • 10x Interchangeable Hands
    • 2x Fist Hands
    • 2x Gripping Hands (Vertical)
    • 2x Gripping Hands (Horizontal)

  • 1x Kama
  • 1x Punch Dagger

  • 1x Compound Bow

Karai was one of the most interesting aspects of the TMNT 2003 and 2012 shows.

Crunchyroll Announces ‘Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You’ Dub Cast For Season 2

The Japanese animation studio Seven Arcs is producing an anime version that first debuted in 2022 with Crunchyroll acquiring the license for a North American release. They also announced that they would be releasing the second season with an English dub from Bang Zoom! Studios.

Crunchyroll announced the cast on their website:

  • Nasa voiced by Zach Aguilar (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
  • Aya voiced by Erika Harlacher (The Seven Deadly Sins)

  • Charlotte voiced by Natalie Rose (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card)
  • Chitose voiced by Lizzie Freeman (Tokyo Revengers)

Dorah Fine works on the project as the ADR director.

You can watch the trailer below:

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows,

“Nasa Yuzaki is determined to leave his name in the history books. Ranking first in the national mock exam and aiming for a distinguished high school, he is certain that he has his whole life mapped out. However, fate is a fickle mistress. On his way home one snowy evening, Nasa’s eyes fall upon a peerless beauty across the street. Bewitched, Nasa tries to approach her—only to get blindsided by an oncoming truck.

Thankfully, his life is spared due to the girl’s swift action. Bleeding by the side of an ambulance, he watches as the girl walks away under the moonlight—reminiscent of Princess Kaguya leaving for the moon. Refusing to let this chance meeting end, he forces his crippled body to chase after her and asks her out. Surprised by his foolhardiness and pure resolve, the girl accepts his confession under a single condition: they can only be together if he marries her!”

A 20′ Donkey Kong Arcade Machine Is Being Built For The Strong Museum!

The Strong National Museum of Play will create a 20′-tall recreation of the classic Nintendo Donkey Kong arcade cabinet!

The Strong Museum announced the project on Twitter, with a tweet showing off a render of the cabinet with a humanoid thrown in for scale. Museum visitors will play Donkey Kong via controls set up on a pedestal in front of the Kong-sized machine.

In a press release from The Strong Museum, the VP of exhibits, Jon-Paul Dyson, Ph.D., had this to say:

“Donkey Kong is a true titan in the video game world—both in terms of character size and the iconic status of the game—so it lends itself perfectly to this playful, whimsical installation. The museum’s expansion will provide a new and bigger home for the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and fittingly, Donkey Kong was inducted into the hall in 2017. We’re thankful to Nintendo of America for providing guidance as we create this unique game feature as authentically and true to the original game as possible.

The Donkey Kong machine is being added to the Strong National Museum of Play’s new 90K square-foot expansion that focuses solely on the history of video games. The DK machine will premiere with the museum’s new wing on June 30th.

If you’re a stickler for authenticity like me, you’ll be pleased to know that this version of Donkey Kong will run via a motherboard from an original DK machine! No emulation here! I can already see this thing being used to set a new world record.

It’s unclear if the machine will be a permanent fixture at the museum or if it will be swapped out for other iconic arcade games.

Denuvo Removed From Resident Evil Village, Half-Life: Alyx Has Full “No VR” Mod

0

Some good news for Half-Life: Alyx fans and even better news for those who dislike Denuvo infesting Resident Evil Village! Unfortunately, none of these stories have anything to do with an interactive VR version of Lady Dimitrescu.

On the virtual reality front, Valve’s latest Half-Life game now has a mod that allows you to play the entire game without a VR headset. In a story from GameStop, we learned that the NoVR mod turns the well-received game into more of a regular first-person shooter.

The mod can be found over at ModDB. In place of the standard VR controls, the mod allows most interactive objects to be manipulated with a typical button press, usually the ‘E’ key. Check out the Half-Life: Alyx “NoVR” FAQ to see if you’d like to try this.

If you’re a completionist, there is a list of achievements that cannot be earned if using this mod:

  • Dead Giveaway – Loot a corpse
  • Up in Arms – Install your first pistol upgrade
  • Freshly Squeezed – Test your grip on a headcrab heart
  • Zombie with a Shotgun – Collect the shotgun
  • Deadliest Catch – Use the gravity gloves to intercept an incoming enemy grenade in mid-flight
  • Combine Harvester – Use the gravity gloves to loot an item off a living Combine soldier
  • Safe Trip – Use the multitool to hack a tripmine
  • Hold Your Liquor – Catch a bottle falling out of a cupboard before it breaks and alerts Jeff
  • Gnome Vault of My Own – Bring a garden gnome with you to the Vault

In other news, Denuvo is finally being removed from Resident Evil Village. We learned about this via PC Mag, as the change comes almost two years after the sequel launched. The anti-piracy DRM program had a workaround available not long after the Resident Evil game was released. However, Capcom refused to remove the alleged malware until now.

I wonder if the same fate awaits the Resident Evil 4 remake. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Review: Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story – SHMUP Sausage

Some of the simplest, yet fun games ever made have been shmups. They’re easy to understand and start playing, fun to get deep into, and challenging to master in a variety of ways. Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story, for multiple platforms, is a fun and goofy shmup that blends together the chaotic action of the genre with the silliness of cartoon sausage. While there is a very light story to go along with the colorful visuals, the focus of this experience is jumping into a fighter plane alone or with some friends and taking down legions of enemies with your sausage-based weapons. Short, simple, and straight to the point.

There’s a total of nine stages in Dogfight, all of which you can replay over and over again. You’re given a grade out of five stars when you complete a stage, based on how well you do in it. This means taking down every enemy, collecting every power-up and medal, and avoiding all damage. This is tougher than it sounds, especially when you’re facing groups of baddies and enemy fire all over the screen in your fighter jet. You will definitely find yourself replaying stages again and again in order to get those extra stars at the end, because of the need for completion or out of sheer pride.

Dogfight can get pretty tough in later stages, mostly because of how many projectiles you’ll try to dodge and the surprises the game throws at you. Some enemies will appear in groups, while others are large and will attempt to take up the majority of the screen. Your plane is able to take some damage, but will eventually get shot down if you aren’t careful. There’s also a chance to repair your plane before it hits the ground, which can save a life and allow you to continue fighting. It’s a neat second chance ability that can save you in some scenarios but is useless if you ram into an enemy or object. At higher difficulties, this might be a more regular occurrence because of stronger enemies that will appear even early on.

Luckily, you also have a ton of power-ups and weapons at your disposal. However, you’ll need to complete stages and earn stars to unlock them. This includes variations in your standard shot, your secondary bombs, and different versions of both. It can get annoying when you’re finishing stages and not earning enough stars to unlock new weapons, and if you’re getting shot down a lot you’ll lose the extra boosts you gather within a stage. Stronger weapons are a necessity for the later portions of Dogfight when the bosses get larger and stronger, so replaying stages to get better rankings is key to opening up new weapons. Are there enough variations on your weapons? Yes, but if you can’t use them for the majority of the game then it hardly matters.

What about cooperative play? Unfortunately, the game is only made with local co-op, no online matchmaking whatsoever. But getting someone into the action is easy with drop-in/drop-out multiplayer, where you can just plug in another controller and hit a button to join. It would’ve been great to have online multiplayer to really take advantage of this, especially when nobody is around locally to play. Having an extra teammate or two definitely makes the game a lot easier, allowing you to tackle higher difficulties with more finesse. Everyone gets their own load-outs to choose from before entering a stage, which can be key to tackling tougher bosses. Teamwork can make quick work of most bosses throughout the whole game.

If you want a quick action game to get in and out of when you have some time to spare, then Dogfight can be a good time. Whether you keep coming back for more will vary greatly for everyone, but what’s here is good. It’s only a shame that different aspects weren’t taken further to really make the game stand out. It’s not the best kind of dinner you can have, but it’s still pretty good.

Are you a fan of shmups or action games? Are you going to check out Dogfight on any platform? Post a comment down below and let us know what you think!
