Meta’s VR Horizon Worlds Opens For Minors Regardless of Backlash

0

Meta wants money, and where does it get that money? By advertising to as many people as possible. So, it’s no wonder that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Horizon Worlds VR app will soon be letting in minors aged 13-17.

PC Mag reports that Horizon Worlds is opening the doors for minors within a few weeks. It turns out the stern words from two U.S. senators, Edward Markey (D. MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D. CT), did nothing to sway Zuckerberg. However, the concerns raised by the politicians may have caused Meta to push their safety precautions to the forefront.

When addressing the concerns of the two senators, a Meta newsroom post stated, “We’re rolling out to teens slowly, so that we can carefully examine usage and are taking a phased approach before expanding more broadly.”

In addition to the multi-leveled plans, Meta will also be implementing additional supervisory tools for parents:

  • We’re beginning to open Meta Horizon Worlds to teens ages 13 to 17 in the US and Canada in the coming weeks with a robust set of age-appropriate protections and safety defaults.
  • We’ve expanded our existing VR parental supervision tools to include Meta Horizon Worlds, making it easier for parents and guardians to help manage their teens’ experience and support healthy conversations about safety in VR.

The events and content within Horizon Worlds will also contain content ratings. Hopefully, this will filter out stuff that isn’t age appropriate. One of the stranger features is called ‘Voice Mode.’ The tool sounds like something out of a Black Mirror episode:

This feature transforms the voices of people a teen doesn’t know into quiet, friendly sounds, giving teens more control over who can communicate with them. It also garbles the teen’s voice, so people they don’t know can’t hear them. We turn garbled voices on automatically for all teens by default within voice mode.

Like most technology, there will be workarounds that could endanger kids or leave them open to contact with less-than-friendly adults. However, parents must do their duties and stay on top of what their children are doing online. This is a lesson that, sadly, still has not been learned even after the days of MySpace and Dateline’s To Catch A Predator.

Senator Markey did issue a new tweet condemning the targeting of teens by Meta:

What do you think about minors using Meta’s online VR sandbox? Let us know below.

Spirit Now Has 1:1 ‘Ghostbusters’ Proton Pack Replicas!

0

Spirit has finally created a 1:1 replica of the iconic Ghostbusters proton pack! And it’s more affordable than the other ones currently on the market!

The pack is reasonably priced at $249.99. Remember that the 1:1 Hasbro version of the prop was $399 when it was being crowdfunded.

Obviously, there are some concessions made with the Spirit version. It is made for wearing, after all. Unfortunately, it’s not 100% screen accurate. The bumper in front of the cyclotron is all one piece, and the speaker holes are still not well hidden.

However, what this proton pack has on the older, smaller one is better detail and sound effects that don’t sound like you’re flushing a toilet. Also, the cyclotron lights are now in sequence rather than flashing along with the garbled sound effects.

The Ghostbusters proton pack from Spirit also comes with three patches and a pair of black gloves. Why? Dunno. I’d have rather had the pack include mounting hardware for an ALICE pack instead. The straps for the replica are built right into the motherboard.

As of writing, the life-sized replica proton pack is still available to order. So buy a few now, and then make a mint when Halloween comes around because they’ll probably be sold out!

Mondo’s Next 1:6 X-MEN Figure Is Gambit!

We’re getting closer to having a complete X-MEN: The Animated Series 1:6 team! Several months since Mondo announced Magneto was joining the 12″ tall action figure series, they’ve finally added Gambit! He’s going to sell out quickly!

Like the other figures in the line, Gambit’s deco is themed after the Fox series from ’93. Remy LeBeau looks like he jumped right off of the screen. Aside from looking well worth his $215 price tag, Gambit comes with many accessories! For nearly any type of action pose you want to put the mutant in, Mondo has included an effects piece or interchangeable part to accomplish that.

Pre-orders for the card-throwing hero will be up through April 25th. Then, expect him to ship out sometime in November 2023.

Aside from Wolverine, Gambit was one of the most popular X-MEN of the 1990s. The character underwent very few aesthetic changes throughout that decade. From his first appearance in The Uncanny X-MEN 266, Remy has been sporting a brown trenchcoat, blue metallic boots, and that odd collar. It’s as iconic as his relationship with the team member who should be next on Mondo’s slate: Rogue.

“The cagey Thieves’ Guild loner who’s explosive as he is mysterious, Remy LeBeau’s Gambit has never been cooler than in Marvel’s X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. The fourth in our XTAS 1/6 scale line, this new figure pays tribute to his kinetic prowess, with four portraits plus all his favorite weapons. And we couldn’t resist nods to some of our favorite episodes, including the inhibitor collars from “Slave Island” and a Mystique portrait inspired by ‘Days of Future Past.'”

The figure will come with the following:

The outfit, while somewhat embarrassing to wear, turns out to have overpowered stats and effects that make her character significantly more powerful. After accepting the bear equipment, she finds herself transported to another in-game world that prevents her from returning to reality.

Confused and unable to log out, Yuna sets out to explore this new environment. She rescues a girl named Fina from wild wolves, who then guides her to the city of Crimonia. With her eccentric bear attire, however, Yuna stands out wherever she goes, and alongside her boosted fighting prowess, her reputation quickly rises—to the point that people give her the nickname Bloody Bear.

Undeterred by this change in her life, Yuna decides to take on the role of an adventurer and fully enjoy herself in her new world.”

The Japanese publishing company Shufu to Seikatsu Sha began to release a manga adaption in 2018. Seven Seas Entertainment releases a an English version in the United States.

Though not much else is known at this time, other than being set in the Stranger Things universe, the twin brothers creators Ross and Matt Duffer, who are also the executive producers of the new series, released a statement expressing their excitement over the news.

“We’ve always dreamed of an animated ‘Stranger Things’ in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”

With season 5 in the works as well, Stranger Things on stage tickets are currently available to purchase here. The play is titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The play is set to open on November 17th, 2023. The play is expected to run into 2024 at the Phoenix Theatre, London.

The summary of the play is:
Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce just wants to get out as soon as she can. When new student Henry Creel and his family arrive, they find a fresh start isn’t that easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story — and to the beginning of the end.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Standalone Game Revealed

Fans of Harry Potter that got to play Hogwarts Legacy recently were disappointed to find out that the franchise’s magical sport Quidditch was absent. Many were hoping that a piece of downloadable content would finally add the fabled sport that Harry and his Hogwarts classmates played during his time at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Though we won’t see any Quidditch DLC for Hogwarts Legacy any time soon, Harry Potter fans looking to get their fix on Quidditch will have an entirely different game to check out. It might be time to get those flying broom skills ready.

Warner Bros. Games announced a standalone game called Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. The game will allow players to participate in the iconic Wizarding World sport in a competitive multiplayer setting. Very few details about the game are currently available outside of the initial announcement, but WB Games did state that signups for a playtest of Quidditch Champions are open. Fans of Harry Potter can visit the Warner Bros. Games website for Quidditch Champions and sign up to join the playtest, which will allow you to create a custom character and play with others online.

While no specific platforms were given for the game, multiple outlets are reporting that it will be for both consoles and PC. Playing Quidditch Champions will also require a constant internet connection. The game has been in development for several years by Unbroken Studios, whose previous work includes the battle royale game Fractured Lands and assisting Rocksteady Studios on the recently delayed Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. Warner Bros. Games will also publish Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions under the Portkey Games label.

In addition to everything announced with the playtest and reveal, no official release date for the game was given. Quidditch is a major part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter franchise. Previous video games based on the Harry Potter films and books have included Quidditch in some form, either as mini-games or as a full game, such as in Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup back in 2003. With the announcement of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, this will mark the first next-gen version of the sport we’ve seen in a long time. Whether we’ll still see something like Hogwarts Legacy get its own version of Quidditch is anyone’s guess, but anybody that was in the mood for this magical sport will get their fix soon enough.

Are you going to check out Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions when it finally releases? Did you sign up for the playtest of the game? Share your thoughts down below in the comment section!

Star Wars Battlefront 3 Was 99 Percent Done According to Former Dev

For many who have played Star Wars games for many years, the fabled Star Wars Battlefront 3 is a story about a game that never was. The Star Wars Battlefront series was a highly popular pair of games made by Pandemic for the PlayStation 2, original Xbox, and PC back in the early 2000s. After the release and great reception of the second game, fans were hoping to see a third installment that would up the ante for what the series had done up till then. But it never came to be, due to a number of factors. But a tweet from a former Free Radical developer may have given Star Wars fans more insight into what happened back then, and why players may have been robbed of something very special.

Michael Barclay was a former developer on Star Wars Battlefront 3, which at the time was being made by Free Radical. The game was in development for a while until it was suddenly canceled back in 2008. While there was a lot of speculation about why the game was canceled and never saw the light of day, various statements floated around about what happened during its development, including missed milestones and conflict behind the scenes. Michael responded to a tweet shared around Twitter by various game developers, looking to open up a conversation about games that “got away” from them, to which he opened up about the canceled Star Wars Battlefront 3.

In his tweet, he talked about his disappointment about the game being canceled. “I feel like it’s been long enough now to come out and say Star Wars Battlefront III was gonna be legit incredible and the fact it got canceled 2 yards from the finish line is an absolute crime. Gamers don’t know what they were robbed of…” Michael then went on to respond to a few people in the replies to his statement, many of which were saddened at the reminder of what could’ve been.

Part of the cancellation of the game many blame on the sale of Lucasfilm by George Lucas to the Walt Disney Company, which is also when other Star Wars video game projects that were planned or in development were also canceled. This includes video games based on Darth Maul called Battle of the Sith Lords, a squad game called Star Wars: First Assault, and the bounty hunter-centric game Star Wars 1313.

For those that don’t know, one of the big features that were going to be a highlight of Star Wars Battlefront 3 was the seamless transition from planetary combat to space combat. Meaning players would be able to fly a starship from a planet’s surface up to the atmosphere around the planet, where the battles would continue in space. Footage of the game leaked out back in 2013, with alpha gameplay showcasing many new aspects that were planned for the sequel.

The leaked footage of Star Wars Battlefront 3 has circulated online for years, with many Star Wars fans debating on whether the game would have been positively received. We’ll never know at this point. As for Michael Barclay, since his time working on the ill-fated Star Wars Battlefront 3, he has gone on with his career in game development, working for companies like Naughty Dog as a lead designer.

What do you think of the extra details about Star Wars Battlefront 3? Are you disappointed we didn’t get to see this game finished? Post your thoughts about it all in the comments down below!

Nintendo Wins Court Case Against Website Operator Dstorage

Nintendo continues its crackdown against websites that house ROMs of their popular games. The publisher has infamously gone after different websites that house ROMs of Nintendo games for years. It is an ongoing battle against piracy that Nintendo shows no sign of slowing down, especially after various ROM websites have been taken down in its wake.  But now another one may have been impacted by Nintendo’s legal eagles and made to pay out a very hefty price for having ROMs of Nintendo games.

In a report by GamesIndustry, the website operator Dstorage was ordered by the Paris Court of Appeals to pay out €442,750 (which amounts to $484,000 USD), along with legal fees, after the court found the website liable for damages done to Nintendo for having unauthorized Nintendo games on its website. According to the court’s ruling, Dstorage failed to remove or block access to pirated copies of Nintendo games that were found on the file hosting website 1fichier.com.

After Nintendo demanded that Dstorage to remove the unauthorized Nintendo games on its website, Dstorage did not do so and the company moved towards legal action with the Paris Judicial Court. The verdict was ruled in Nintendo’s favor back in May 2021, with now The Court of Appeals giving the official amount in compensation and legal fees for Dstorage to pay to Nintendo.

In a statement released after the verdict, Nintendo reinforced its stance against piracy and thoughts on the verdict. “Nintendo is pleased with the decision of the Paris Court of Appeals, as it again sends a clear message that in refusing to remove or withdraw access to unauthorized copies of video games despite prior notification, share hosting services such as Dstorage (1fichier) are liable under French law and must remove or block access to such content and may be liable to pay compensation to those rights holders whose intellectual property rights have been infringed…

The Court’s finding of liability against Dstorage is significant not only for Nintendo but also for the entire games industry. It will prevent share hosters like 1Fichier from claiming that a prior decision from a court will be needed before pirated content has to be taken down, and additionally, the Court decision confirms what rights holders have to give notice of when claiming that notified content infringes copyright or trademark rights.”

As of now, the only options that Dstorage has is to either appeal the decision of the court or pay out the fees to Nintendo. No statement by Dstorage has been made on the court’s ruling, whether they will appeal it or not. In the past, Nintendo is notorious for having a very heavy hand on those who get involved in piracy with its games. Back in 2022, Nintendo took a known Nintendo hacker named Gary Bowser to court. The ruling found Gary sent to prison for a 40-month sentence for creating and selling devices with pirated Nintendo games.

What do you think about the news of Nintendo going after websites and people who pirate their games? Do you think that Dstorage should appeal the verdict? Share your thoughts down below in the comment section!

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast Gets VR Support with JK XR

Many Star Wars fans will tell you how much they loved to play Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast on various platforms. It was seen as one of the best Star Wars video game sequels around, with lightsaber combat that is still fondly looked at today. But what if you could take that same action from Jedi Outcast and play it in virtual reality? It’s every Star Wars fan’s dream to wield a lightsaber in VR. That’s exactly what Team Beef set out to do by porting over Jedi Outcast to Meta headsets.

The Jedi Outcast port to the Quest 1/2/3 and Pico 4 is called JK XR. It is a standalone port of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast that uses OpenXR and is based on the OpenJK source port. JK XR is available now for anyone that has a Meta Quest VR machine or Pico 4. Fans of Star Wars that have a Quest device can visit the SideQuest VR website with a post to download the port and try it out themselves. Luckily, the website also has a step-by-step guide on how to download and install JK XR, as well as feeds about updates and other aspects of the port.

The JK XR video on their YouTube channel shows the gameplay of Jedi Outcast via the port, showing a lot of the action that can be done in VR. You can notice the hands of the game’s protagonist Kyle Katarn appearing on screen in the same fashion as most other VR games, but wielding various force powers and swinging a lightsaber around. Everything from firing a blaster at stormtroopers to wielding a lightsaber against dark Jedi is done in first-person.

The game has unique VR features such as motion-triggered abilities, such as throwing a lightsaber at enemies and using force powers. By using different gestures in VR, a player can use the different force powers that are in Jedi Outcast, such as Force Pull and Force Push. You can even switch between active force powers via a wheel that can be controlled with the Quest controllers while in-game. There is also proximity trigger scopes to look down the scope of different weapons, like the sniper rifle that has a scope to use.

Outside of all of this, Team Beef hasn’t forgotten about the mod community that is still very much active for games like Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. There are mod downloads that players can access with the companion app, opening up even more gameplay possibilities in VR.

Team Beef is a group of programmers and developers who love Star Wars as much as anyone else. According to their official Patreon page, they were established back in 2019 and work at porting various games to virtual reality devices. This includes bringing games like Quake, Half-Life, Castle Wolfenstein, and DOOM 3 to VR platforms like Meta Quest. Their work on different ports averages around 370,000 downloads per year from enthusiastic fans.

Are you a Star Wars fan who is interested in checking out this VR port? Were you a fan of the original release of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast? Post a comment down below and let your voice be heard!
