Anime Comedy ‘Cromartie High School’ Gets A Blu-Ray Announcement

0

Discotek Media is bringing the surreal anime comedy series ‘Cromartie High School’ to North American audiences on Blu-ray. The box set includes all twenty-six episodes as well as both the original Japanese and the English dub from ADV Films. The DVDs have a planned release date of August 29, 2023, but are available for pre-order on the Right Stuf Anime website.

Based on a parody manga by creator Eiji Nonaka, it was released between 2000 to 2006 by Kodansha locally and released in the United States by the now defunct ADV Manga.

Discotek released an image of the Blu-ray box set:

Steven Foster worked on the project as ADR Director and as a producer.

The English voice cast included:

  • Ben Pronsky as Takashi Kamiyama
  • Andy McAvin as Akira Maeda
  • George Manley as Masked Takenouchi
  • Illich Guardiola as Shinjiro Hayashida
  • James Faulkner as Noboru Yamaguchi
  • Jason Douglas as Takeshi Hokuto
  • Jay Hickman as Shinichi Mechazawa
  • John Gremillion as Yutaka Takenouchi
  • Adam Conlon as Tabata

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows,

“Takashi Kamiyama is your typical mild-mannered high school student—polite, aloof, and pacifistic, with a slightly above-average IQ. But would your average high school student really enroll himself at the infamous Cromartie High School, known as a breeding ground for the toughest delinquents out there?

Apparently so, as that is exactly what Takashi does, though for reasons he’d rather leave unmentioned. However, one thing is for sure: the “hard-boiled rabbit in a den full of hungry lions” is never going to have another dull day. And how could he, now that he’s surrounded by mohawked punks, obnoxious robots, and… gorillas? And was that Freddie Mercury riding a horse down the corridor? Follow Takashi as he earnestly dedicates his new high school life to better his school’s reputation while his classmates are hellbent on wreaking havoc.”

Japanese filmmaker Yūdai Yamaguchi released a live action version titled ‘Cromartie High – The Movie’ in 2005.

  • Jane voiced by Junko Minagawa (Nagi in Akiba Maid War)

IMDb described the synopsis as follows,

“The year is 20XX. The ninja, who once forged the history of Japan, were scattered across the country during the Meiji Restoration. As these ninja mingled with the other clans, their bloodline thinned, and they gradually faded from sight. The descendants of these ninja clans, seeking to preserve their heritage, formed the WNA (World Ninja Association) in the hope of carrying on their legacy. And so it was that the WNA succeeded in developing Ninja-Gum, an art which could summon forth the strength of the Shinobi. And yet creating the most powerful Ninja-Gum requires the strongest of ninja DNA. So it was that the Ninjala Tournament was held, that the mightiest of all ninjas could be found.”

The television series aired on TV Tokyo in Japan.

EA Sports and EA Games Split in EA Restructuring

If you’re someone that plays a lot of sports games, then you’re very familiar with the EA Sports brand and EA games. Many of the major sports that had licensed video game releases were often released with EA Sports on the box, including games like Madden and FIFA. But while the two have been associated with each other for a long time under the same umbrella of Electronic Arts, things are shaking up for the publisher. Both EA sports and EA games are splitting up as the company aims to look into opportunities beyond games when possible.

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson announced on the EA website that the company is realigning studio leadership with its major studios in order to empower their creative teams. This would include splitting up EA Sports and EA Games, and rebranding EA Games under the name EA Entertainment. This could indicate the company is looking towards things like film and television to expand the reach of their big franchises.

Andrew made the announcement in a message circulated about how the change would positively help Electronic Arts moving forward. “We’re building the future of interactive entertainment on a foundation of legendary franchises and innovative new experiences, which represents massive opportunities for growth…”

There has been a lot of changes going on behind the scenes at Electronic Arts for a while. Not too long ago, Star Wars: The Old Republic had moved development over from BioWare to Broadsword Online Games, with the shuffling of developers to other projects or possibly being laid off. Other moves came from the cancelation of two mobile projects back in January 2023, specifically Apex Legends Mobile and Battlefield Mobile. With this new shift, studios under the banner of EA Games and now EA Entertainment will be mostly the same with moderate changes internally. Both organizations will report to Andrew going forward.

EA Sports will still have many of the big sports titles under its watch. This would mean series like Madden, NHL, PGA Tour will be totally fine. Other games included in this would be the upcoming EA Sports College Football game currently in development and the F1 racing series. EA recently acquired Metalhead Studios back in May 2021, who made Super Mega Baseball, which will also be part of EA Sports.

For EA Entertainment, you can expect to see many of the studios who have made big games for franchises like Star Wars, Battlefield, Mass Effect, and many others. This would include studios such as Respawn Entertainment, DICE, Ridgeline Games, and BioWare. The EA Originals label is also part of this grouping as well. Many licensed games on both consoles and mobile platforms may very well be a big focus here. This means any game projects related to the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings franchises, and possibly more.

“This evolution of our company continues to empower our studio leaders with more creative ownership and financial accountability to make faster and more insightful decisions around development and go to market strategies…”

What do you think of all the changes happening for Electronic Arts right now? Do you think this will lead to good things happening with their games in the nearby future? Tell us your thoughts about everything in the comments down below!

Review: Crash Team Rumble – Arena Crash

Crash Bandicoot is a character that has been thrown into many different things, for better or worse throughout the years. Like Mario and Sonic before him, Crash Bandicoot has done everything from racing to party games that bring multiple people together. Now Crash is getting injected into competitive arena games with Crash Team Rumble on PlayStation and Xbox Series consoles. And while it’s an interesting idea that works out well for Crash Bandicoot the character, a number of technical problems cause the game to crash and falter for players. It’s too bad because what Toys for Bob made here is actually a smart and clever way to utilize these characters.

Crash Team Rumble pits two teams against each other in a race to collect Wumpa fruit. You break boxes and pick up Wumpa fruit in different stages and bring them to a goal on the map. The idea is to do this before the opposing team, so you’ll have to work as a team to get the job done. This is where the game is at its best by having every character fit a given role that can assist the team. Certain characters you pick are ideal for different scenarios, whether it’s scoring or hindering the other team in a variety of ways. If you have a good team of players who can stick with their job in a match, you can end up winning pretty easily.

That is until you have to deal with the barrage of technical issues that pop up during gameplay. Balancing for the game is hit or miss, depending on the map you’re on and the team you find yourself in. A few characters have big hitboxes that can cause them to get smacked by incoming attacks easily or knocked back, causing you to fall off the map or get KOed pretty fast. Matches can get very chaotic with everything happening on screen, between players dropping abilities or items and crazy instances being activated on the map, it can be difficult to judge how to approach skirmishes at times.

But the most egregious thing to happen is the game crashes that spontaneously occur. On the PlayStation 5, the game can suffer from random crashes at the worst of times, including when you’re about to finish a match or when you just complete it. While this doesn’t give you a penalty for online matches, it can be very annoying when it happens multiple times. Updates and patches will definitely address this, but at launch, it’s a big point of concern.

When that isn’t happening, Crash Team Rumble can get very competitive. You’ll want to explore all of the different characters available to use in order to find the best combination for your own play style. Do you like scoring points for the team? Try using Crash or any of the characters labeled Scorers. Like being a problem for the other team? Blockers like Dingodile and N. Brio are great for being an absolute menace to the other team all the time. But for everyone else who likes to be the support person, characters like Coco and Cortex help out by gathering relics to activate special abilities on the map. Each class of character has pros and cons that can be exploited in matches to great effect.

Because of how wild some abilities can be for certain characters, balancing in matches can be a major issue for this game. Certain matches will have you matched with a team that uses more of a certain class over others, rather than balancing things out. When that happens, you might be out of luck when the opposing team dominates you by one or two means, preventing you from scoring or completely taking over everything on the map. As more updates for Crash Team Rumble are released, the balance may or may not get better with time. But for now, there are definitely certain characters that will dominate the majority of matches online over others, mainly because they have the most benefits in nearly every match they are in.

The game also has a lot of unlockables that you’ll gain over time by playing matches. Music from throughout the Crash Bandicoot series can be played at the end screen of matches, artwork for your online profile, as well as custom items you can equip to every character. There are enough rewards to go around to the point that you might find yourself getting something new each time you finish a match. The customization is limited to the items you unlock through the game’s Battle Pass and Challenges you complete, but the majority of items can be equipped for nearly every character. At the start of the game, you’ll need to play different classes to unlock the full roster by completing challenges. A few of them can take a while due to the nature of what they ask from you, such as blocking opponents from scoring points, but are achievable after playing a bunch of matches online.

Online matches can be either hit or miss, depending on who you get matched with and if you pick the right character for the skirmish. The connections and frequency of matches are pretty solid, but the load times may annoy some people. When matched online, you’ll definitely need to play your role with the character you choose because other players might not do so often. It can definitely get frustrating when you’re thrown into a match where your teammates are not helping out after you’ve been filling your role the whole time. A lot of patience is needed in times like this, but eventually, you’ll get paired with others where the team synergy works out very well.

Crash Team Rumble is a game that will only really resonate with Crash Bandicoot fans who love the series. Even those who enjoy arena-style games might not be too quick to jump into this, especially with the balancing issues and other technical problems that pop up frequently. If you can get over that, there is a solid foundation here for anyone who takes the time to play, with a good roster of characters and fan service from throughout the Crash Bandicoot series. One would wish that many of the big problems would get ironed out in patches so that more of the better aspects of Crash Team Rumble can stand out better to everyone.

Toxic Crusaders Demo Impressions: Fun But Repetitive

0

The Toxic Crusaders demo is out! It gives us a few locations to fight through, a boss battle, and four characters to try out. So, does this retro beat-em-up satisfy fans of the short-lived Troma cartoon? Let’s check it out.

We get to pick from Toxie, Yvonne, Major Disaster, and Junkyard. Sadly, No-Zone was left out. Although you may not get to play as the core four Toxic Crusaders, the roster is diverse enough to give a slightly different experience on each playthrough.

The pixel art is outstanding, capturing the cartoon’s style perfectly while incorporating The Toxic Avenger’s aesthetics. Speaking of the original movie, there are lots of Easter eggs spread throughout the demo. You’ll encounter a few colorful villains from the 1984 film: Leroy, Rico, and Frank from the taco restaurant fight scene.

The game certainly needs a bit of polishing and maybe a little more depth regarding the fighting. Unlike TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, there’s no leveling up and unlocking new moves. The core fighting mechanics are all you’ll get throughout the game. Thankfully, the character animations are very well done and help disguise the shallow move sets.

Each character has a special attack that drains a meter indicated below the life bar. These moves vary from character to character to character, but all appear to do similar AoE damage. Toxie spins around on his mop, Yvonne belts out powerful notes, Junkyard howls, and Major Disaster unleashes giant thorns from the ground. The attacks all appear to have the same range and effectiveness. Some are more flashy than others, though. The bar refills as you fight or when you’re standing in a puddle of radioactive waste.

When the meter is full, pressing both shoulder buttons together will unleash Rad Mode. Oddly enough, I ignored this during my playthrough because it never felt necessary to use. It might have been helpful if the enemies had been a tad more aggressive. As it stands, the basic core attacks suffice for every encounter.

I noticed that the hitboxes for enemies were not very generous. On multiple occasions, I would throw an object at Radiation Rangers, and they wouldn’t be affected because I would have to be on the same plane as my target. However, standard attacks didn’t always have this issue. Hopefully, this will be tightened up by next year.

The enemy AI would sometimes be wonky, too. There was a point where I stopped moving for a few seconds, and a nearby Radiation Ranger stopped dead in its tracks, unsure how to approach me.

One of the game’s best aspects is the inclusion of semi-animated cut scenes and the return of several voice actors to provide a surprising amount of dialog during gameplay. It feels like a continuation of the show, which was Retroware’s goal.

Toxic Crusaders will make for a fun multiplayer experience, but it’s unclear if there will be enough to warrant multiple playthroughs.

New Kraven the Hunter Trailer Reveals Marvel Villain Brutality

Sony has been working on bringing out various Spider-Man villains into their own movies following the success of the Venom films. The next one that movie-goers will get a look at is the infamous Kraven the Hunter. Those that went to Cinemacon got a quick look at what the movie will be like, with reactions being mixed at the creative liberties taken. But now the public can finally see what a Kraven the Hunter movie will look like in the official trailer. And it’s definitely making waves with how vicious Kraven the Hunter will be.

The official trailer for Kraven the Hunter reveals actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character. We follow Kraven as a young boy to adulthood, following the teachings of his father and hunting his enemies. But things don’t appear to be as straightforward as we thought, as Kraven will be hunting a multitude of people ranging from hitmen to others who may be just as bad as him.

Like both the Venom and Morbius movies that came before, Kraven the Hunter will focus solely on the Marvel Comics villain, so don’t expect any Spider-Man cameos or appearances. While there are other Marvel characters that appear in the film, like the tease for the Rhino at the end of the trailer, the story in this film is all about Kraven. Much of the dialogue in the trailer is about Kraven and his family being predators to everyone and everything around him. We see a quick glance at how Kraven gets his abilities and how brutal his fighting skills will be. As a hunter, Kraven looks to show no remorse or mercy to those he sets his sights on. The film is going to be rated R, so we can definitely expect to see many successful hunts and blood for the highly-trained killer.

The movie’s official poster shows Kraven in an iconic pose that is pulled straight from Marvel Comics. It is the pose from the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #17 released back in 2018, showing Kraven sitting down and contemplating his next move. The poster also has Aaron Taylor-Johnson wearing the iconic Kraven outfit that many comic fans are familiar with. However, we hardly see Aaron in the costume during the trailer, with only a few glimpses of him wearing the outfit and moving around.

Speaking at Cinemacon during a panel, Aaron Taylor-Johnson told fans that the movie is heavily grounded in the real world. “Kraven the Hunter is a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world… anyone who is familiar with the comics and the character of Kraven knows that he’s a fierce hunter with the skill of a highly trained killer. So, I figure now’s a good time to answer the Internet’s biggest question about the film. Will it be rated R? Fuck yes it’s going to be rated R.” Kraven the Hunter is set to release in theaters on October 6th, 2023.

‘Run With The Wind’ Dashes Onto HiDive

0

The 2018 sports anime ‘Run With The Wind’ was based on the 2006 novel by Shion Miura and released by Shinchosha Publishing. It ran for two seasons with twenty-three episodes and was produced by the Japanese animation studio Production IG. Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime for a North American release with HiDive announcing they would stream it starting June 25, 2023.

“The Irish have a saying: “May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back.” That’s an evocative blessing for a sports anime that is as inspiring as it is relatable. If you’re looking for your next anime binge, you really can’t go wrong with the Run with the Wind anime,” HiDive said on their website. They added that both the subbed and dubbed versions would stream.

The Japanese publisher Shueisha released a manga version of the novel illustrated by Sorata Unno released between 2007 and 2009.

You can watch this clip from the dub below:

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows,

“Former ace runner of Sendai Josei High School, Kakeru Kurahara is chased away from a convenience store for shoplifting. Shaking off his pursuer, he runs into Haiji Kiyose, another student from his university. Haiji is impressed by Kakeru’s agility and persuades him to live in Chikusei-sou, the run-down apartment where Haiji resides along with eight other students. Having lost his entire apartment deposit at a mahjong parlor, Kakeru accepts the offer reluctantly.

However, Haiji reveals a secret during Kakeru’s welcoming party: the apartment is actually the dormitory of the Kansei University Track Club. He unveils his ultimate goal of participating in the Hakone Ekiden—one of the most prominent university marathon relay races in Japan. Unfortunately, all the residents apart from Haiji and Kakeru are complete running novices. Worse still, none of the inhabitants are even remotely interested in being involved with Haiji’s ridiculous plan! With only months before the deadline, will the fourth-year student be able to convince them otherwise and realize his elusive dream of running in the Hakone Ekiden?”

A live action adaption was directed by Sumio Ohmori and distributed by Shochiku in 2009.
