DC Comics Announces New Gritty Miniseries ‘Batman: The Imposter’

0

Batman is going to have another “unique” version in the form of a three-part miniseries from the DC Comics Black Label titled ‘Batman: The Imposter.’ Director and screenwriter Mattson Tomlin will be handling the writing duties with artist Andrea Sorrentino handling the illustrations.
According to a press release, the series is “offering up a unique vision of Gotham’s Dark Knight!”

They continue, “This October, Batman fans get a new and different look at Gotham’s guardian as he begins his war on crime in Batman: The Imposter, a three-issue Prestige format series from DC. The series will debut in print and on participating digital platforms (English-language version) on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. In addition, the series will be collected in a hardcover format, available February 22, 2022.”
“As a lifelong Batman fan, putting my spin on Gotham City has been a dream come true,” Mattson Tomlin added. “Taking the question of ‘What if Batman was real?’ as far as narratively possible conjured incredible potential that hasn’t recently been explored in the comics. Batman: The Imposter treats Bruce Wayne and the people around him as tragically flawed and vividly real, with the obstacles Batman faces coming from a reality that closely mirrors our own.”
“Bruce Wayne’s mission as the Batman has only been under way for a year or so, but he can tell he’s making a difference,” DC Comics continues. “Unfortunately, he’s made some powerful enemies. All the traditional power brokers of Gotham resent the disruption the Batman has brought to town…and it seems one of them has a plan to neutralize him. There’s a second Batman haunting Gotham’s rooftops and alleys—and this one has no qualms about murdering criminals, live and on tape.”
They explain, “With the entire might of the Gotham City Police Department and Gotham’s rich and powerful coming down on his head, Batman must find this imposter and somehow clear his name…but how can you prove your innocence from behind a mask?”
This is not the first time a guest writer has optioned for creating a “unique” view of Batman. Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, Lee Bermejo, Stan Lee, and several other creators have all put their own spin on the Caped Crusader.

Bug Bunny Voice Actor Calls ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ A Standalone Film

The 1996 comedy film ‘Space Jam’ showed the Looney Tunes all-stars show the characters teaming up with NBA star Michael Jordan and SNL alumni Bill Murray to defeat alien invaders in a basketball game.
Taking over the role from Billy West, the follow-up ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ features Jeff Bergman voicing Bugs Bunny. This time, the toons help NBA star Lebron James save his son from a rogue AI played by Don Cheadle.
Bergman, who also voiced the character in ‘Looney Tunes: Rabbits Run,’ recently sat down with Syfy Wire to discuss how the new film will not be a direct sequel, but a standalone feature.
“It’s really not the same film,” he explained. “It’s a really different film. This has a really great personal story that is really LeBron’s story, which is so different than Michael Jordan’s. So, from that perspective, I was really excited because it’s a standalone.”
He also elaborated how the cartoon rabbit has evolved from the first film, comparing him to Tom Hanks’ character Woody from ‘Toy Story.’
“Bugs Bunny reminds me a little bit of Woody in Toy Story,” Bergman adds. “He’s kind of rallying the troops. Woody’s rallying the toys [and] Bugs is trying to get all the Looney Tunes back together, and he’s just so gleeful when [they reunite]. I felt like he was the pied piper a little bit.”
“I did watch the original ‘Space Jam’ again. I certainly wanted to see it because once I saw the script, I knew they were going to pay homage to the original film,” Bergman continued. “So, I did want to watch it.”
“And, I know Billy I am an enormous fan of his,” he said referencing the first ‘Space Jam’ actor. “We’ve worked together through the years, he cracks me up all the time, and so, I did want to see what that was. But, I think very much like Billy and all the actors [who voice Bugs], our reference is the Jedi Master, which is Mel Blanc … Because ultimately, that’s where we all started from, is referencing Bugs Bunny cartoons.”
‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ is slated to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 16, 2021, both in theaters and on HBO Max for a month after its theatrical release.

Buster Keaton And Jackie Chan Inspired The Action In ‘Gunpowder Milkshake,’ Says Director

0

‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ director Navot Papushado explained that filmmaker Buster Keaton and Martial Arts film star Jackie Chan inspired much of the action in the Netflix action-thriller.
“For me, the two best action heroes are Buster Keaton and Jackie Chan,” he told Slash Film. “Their action sequences are funny, but more than anything else, they provoke emotion through storytelling. For them, it’s all about either the plot moving forward or the character’s arc. It’s never about nihilistic, shoot-em-up kind of a thing.”
He continued, “I’m also a big fan of Asian cinema and Korean cinema and Japanese and Chinese and everything. In those movies, guns play a part, but it’s actually the challenges that you throw on your characters. It’s also a challenge on yourself as a writer, how can I push my heroine into the most difficult, absurd surrealist situation and see how she can come up or recover from that?”
“Now, having said that, those action scenes were written the way that they are,” Papushado said. “But once the entire [stunt] team came on board, they kept pushing the envelope. They would come to me, and they would say, “Listen, Karen is good. Lena is good. We can push it a little bit more. How about this and about that?” And then Michelle joined in, then Angela joined in, and then Carl joined in. Okay, we needed to rethink it a little bit. We need to create more challenges for ourselves. I’m not going to put just two guns at Michelle’s hand. I mean, she jumped on a moving train with the bike. I can come up with something a little bit more creative. So, a chain would be more fitting, that will challenge us and her a little bit.”
‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ premiered on Netflix and stars Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Chloe Coleman, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Paul Giamatti. Papushado co-wrote the movie with Ehud Lavski.

Though his ongoing solo comics have been canceled, DC Comics is reviving the character for a Black Label miniseries written by Tom King and drawn by Greg Smallwood.
“Can the DC Universe’s Greatest Bodyguard Solve His Own Murder,” DC says in a press release. “With a resume that includes successful and critically acclaimed titles such as The Omega Men, Mister Miracle, Rorschach, and Strange Adventures, best-selling writer Tom King definitely has the magic touch when it comes to plumbing the depths of the DC Universe and reimagining characters for a new generation of fans. On November 2, King and artist Greg Smallwood create a new legacy for DC’s deadliest bodyguard in Human Target, a 12-issue limited series based on the character co-created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino.”
The synopsis explains, “Christopher Chance has made a living out of being a human target—a man hired to disguise himself as his client to invite would-be assassins to attempt his murder. He’s had a remarkable career until his latest case protecting Lex Luthor when things go sideways. An assassination attempt Chance didn’t see coming leaves him vulnerable and left trying to solve his own murder…as he has 12 days to discover just who in the DCU hated Luthor enough to want him dead. The DC Universe meets gritty detective noir in this DC BLACK LABEL series by two of comics most celebrated talents!”

The series is expected to be released on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.
Christopher Chance has had two ‘Human Target’ television shows based on him with Rick Springfield and Mark Valley starred as him in each one respectively. He was also a recurring character in the CW’s ‘Arrow’ played by Wil Traval.

Ray Arnold’s Mysterious Fate Becomes Mattel’s SDCC Exclusive Jurassic Park Set

Poor Ray Arnold. He didn’t get much of a sendoff in Jurassic Park. Well, at least in the final cut of the movie we all saw. Regardless, Mattel is offering up an exclusive SDCC set that shows off the character’s final moments.
Over at Figures.com, we got a good look at what looks to be a pretty awesome display box featuring both Mr. Arnold and a velociraptor. Mattel isn’t divulging too many details outright, but the display box looks to feature lights and maybe a bit more. There’s a recessed area on the floor behind Ray that hints that there may be a base that comes with this thing, too.

We know that things didn’t end well for chief engineer, Ray Arnold in Jurassic Park.
This hyper-detailed diorama uncovers a scene that lived only in our imaginations for years. Get yours 7/22 at 9 AM PST on mattelcreations.com and recreate that final scene and Mr. Arnold’s final moments…

Yup, we get a bloody stump of an arm, but what about the leg? Wondering what I am talking about? Well, the death of JP’s chief engineer wasn’t always supposed to be so mysterious.
Originally, Samuel L. Jackson’s character was supposed to have a bit more screen time when it came to his death. Of course, we all know that his arm was torn off, but based on props created and some other evidence, he suffered a lot more than just one severed limp. Check out this video for more info.

Does this mean we could eventually get a gutted Dennis Nedry figure? Oh, one can only hope. Keep your eyes on Mattel’s Instagram and Creations website for your chance to order this exclusive set.
What other scenes from that classic flick would you like to see get their own display cases? Timmy being zapped by the fence? Hammond’s lawyer being eaten by the t-rex? Let us know in the comments.

Go Ninja! Go Ninja! Go Get These Secret Of The Ooze Funko Pops!

My kid just discovered the original two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle films, and she asked me if these Turtles were real. Yes. Yes, they are. They’re as real as Santa Claus at the moment. Vanilla Ice is real, too.
When you’re young, you have to learn to believe the little lies. If they don’t learn them, how else will the bigger ones become real? Enough pining after Terry Pratchett. Let’s look at some Funko Pops!
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze kicking into theatres, Funko is releasing a bunch of Pops! based on the film. The sequel was rushed into production after the mega-success of the 1990 film. All of us kids of the ’80s went to see it. The film was an event like Christmas, Halloween, and your 10th birthday party combined.
This series of miniature movie icons will feature the following characters:

  • Tokka
  • Rahzar
  • Super Shredder
  • Michelangelo
  • Raphael
  • Donatello

Almost everyone is here. Why no Splinter, though? Or Paige Turco as April O’Neil? Or David Warner as Professor Jordon Perry? Or Ernie Reyes Jr. as Keno? Or Toshishiro Obata as Tatsu? OK, OK. I understand that these things cost money to produce, and not everyone is clamoring for a David Warner action figure. This is all just wishful thinking.
These Secret of the Ooze figures will be out in August of this year. Just in time for my birthday! If you’re feeling generous, head on over to Entertainment Earth and buy all of them for me.
Only joking. I have no room for these. Besides, they’d end up with my daughter on some magical journey with her Ana and Elsa dolls. Maybe I’ll find her Barbies doing the Ninja Rap.
