One, Two Mezco’s Adorable Talking Freddy Is Coming For You

Hot on the heels of Mezco’s Leatherface, this adorable Freddy figure is ready to cuddle … or kill you in your sleep.
Mezco is adding another horror icon, the MDS Mega Scale line. Like with the Pennywise figure, this Freddy Krueger talks! OK, that’s not the coolest thing. However, the crispy child murderer also features a cloth sweater, pants, and what looks like a felt fedora.

Freddy Krueger, the dream-haunting slasher from the original ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ films, is coming for you!
The MDS Mega Scale Talking Freddy Krueger stands at a frightening 15” tall and says 5 nightmare-inducing phrases from the original films including “You think you was going to get away from me?!”
The dream demon is dressed in his infamous striped sweater and fedora. He features a newly sculpted head portrait, razor glove, and 11 points of articulation.
The MDS Mega Scale Talking Freddy Krueger comes packaged in a collector-friendly window box, perfect for display

Some of those sayings better include the word “b!&*%” and “You shouldn’t have buried me” line. If they throw in his Freddy’s Dead dialog about the Power Glove, it will be an instant buy for me.
Click here to pre-order Krueger for $98.00. He should be shipping between September and November of this year.
Freddy Krueger is such a weird bit of pop culture. Think about it. His crimes as a human included doing horrible things to children, and then as a dream demon, he did even worse things to teens. This character became a multi-generational icon. I had Freddy footy PJs! Merchandise was made aimed at kids featuring the fictitious killer’s face!
What other character in cinema could you see getting this kind of treatment? Would we put Walter White on kids’ lunchboxes? Norman Bates bubble bath? Leatherface Lunchables? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Sideshow and Premium Collectibles Studio present the Pumpkinhead™ 1:4 Scale Statue, inspired by special effects legend Stan Winston’s 1988 directorial debut, Pumpkinhead.
The Pumpkinhead 1:4 Scale Statue measures 27” tall and 19” wide, standing on a detailed environment base that recreates the iconic graveyard scene from the film. Pumpkins and vines grow in tangled masses above the dirt, which hides the partially uncovered corpse used to summon the titular monster. Pumpkinhead prowls in the darkness, searching for its next victim in an unstoppable vengeance spree.
The Pumpkinhead 1:4 Scale Statue is a fully sculpted marvel meticulously recreating Stan Winston’s iconic creature in exceptional detail, from its terrifying face down to the talons on its feet. Painted with fleshy, pale orange and sickly purple hues, the monster takes on an undying, unearthly appearance with large claws and a whip-like tail. Pumpkinhead has a muscular physique detailed with veins and sinews, its form textured to give added depth to the horror of the creature. Pumpkinhead’s portrait is complete with a snarling face, inhuman eyes, and the brain-like cranium as imagined by one of the greatest minds in movie monster horror.

Pumpkinhead is available in two versions. Both are $1,250. The exclusive version of the beast comes with an alternate head. Now, if you’ve not seen the movie, it is a bit of a spoiler. You see, once someone has sold their soul for vengeance … they eventually become the monster.

Manga Dominates June 2021 Top 20 Graphic Novel Bookscans

The NPD BookScan’s Top 20 adult graphic novels list was dominated not by any of the usual suspects, but by Japanese manga. ‘My Hero Academia’ takes the number one spot with ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’ and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ taking several slots. This is the third month in a row that manga has taken over.
Clownfish TV reported in June how ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’ was outselling comic books from the largest publishers.
“Demon Slayer has reportedly outsold the entire North American comic book industry in 2020, but journalists are trying very hard to disclaim that,” Kneon notes. “No matter how you slice it, manga is seeing a surge in popularity while the American comic book industry is coasting on fumes. The corporate owners of Marvel and DC comics probably have a lot of questions…”
According to the Anime News Network,
#1 — Kōhei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia volume 28
#2 — Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man volume 5
#3 — Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen volume 10
#4 — Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba volume 22
#5 — Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s Death Note Black Edition volume 1
#6 — Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan volume 1
#7 — Tatsuya Endō’s SPY x FAMILY volume 5
#8 — Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen volume 3
#9 — Junji Ito’s Uzumaki Hardcover
#10 — Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen volume 1
#11 — Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen volume 8
#12 — Kōhei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia volume 27
#13 — Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man volume 3
#14 — Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu’s The Promised Neverland volume 1
#15 — Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba volume 9
#16 — Iro Aida’s Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun volume 1
#17 — Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen volume 4
#18 — Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba volume 10
#19 — Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba volume 13
#20 — Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen volume 2
They add that the “BookScan rankings collect data sales from more than 16,000 locations including Barnes & Noble and other book chains, independent bookshops, and online purchases — but not sales at comic book stores, Walmart.com, and some other venues. The rankings cover about 85% of the U.S. trade print book market.”

‘Those Snow White Notes’ Creator Discusses Writing A Musical Manga

‘Mashiro no Oto’ is a manga written and illustrated by Marimo Ragawa. Known in English as ‘Those Snow White Notes,’ the story is published in Kodansha’s ‘Monthly Shōnen Magazine’ and follows a shamisen player who has lost his creative spark until a chance encounter changes his fate.
Ragawa recently sat down with Crunchyroll to discuss his “manga without sounds” that relies heavily on music.
“At first, I tried to express the imagery through the scenery, but along the way, I started making heavy use of onomatopoeia,” he said. “I realized that, even before trying to imagine Tsugaru shamisen, in particular, the reader might not have any idea what the instrument sounds like in the first place, so I felt it was necessary to put words to the art. Now that the series has been running for so long, I feel like even if they don’t know the sound, they can understand the feeling, so I’ll draw abstract imagery and leave the sound to the reader’s imagination.”
He continued, “To prepare for this series, I did start going to Tsugaru shamisen lessons. Back then, it was one of those “culture classes” with many other students, but scheduling was difficult, so now I take private lessons. I never learned any kind of music, so I’ve always admired the piano. I like all genres of music, and I really love songs from the ’80s and ’90s ― Madonna, Michael Jackson, Queen, Cyndi Lauper, etc … That’s my youth!”
On the inspiration behind the protagonist Setsu, Ragawa discusses how family plays an important role in the character’s development.
“Since Setsu was a baby, he’s been raised listening to his grandfather’s sound,” he explained. “It had become his identity, so he didn’t know how to express himself outside of it, and he never had any reason to question that about himself. That’s why when he rushes out of his hometown, Aomori, he’s bewildered about the process of self-expression.”
He added, “In the beginning, he admired his grandfather’s sound and wanted to be able to play like him, but now, he perceives it as a sound he must surpass.”
The popularity of the manga led to an anime adaption from Shin-Ei Animation that was released in the West by Crunchyroll.
According to Kodansha, the plot begins when, “Setsu’s grandfather died, so did Setsu’s “sound”—his unique creative spark. Grieving, he goes to Tokyo to find himself…but manages to become totally, literally lost on his first day. Only a chance meeting with Yuna—aka Yuka, the hostess—saves him from being robbed. At first glance their lives seem totally different, but they’re both striving for their dreams—hers, of being an actress, and his, of developing his talent with the shamisen—and it could just be that life in the raucous, unfeeling urban sprawl of Tokyo could just be what binds their fates together…”

Take Star Trek’s 24th Century Medicine Home With This Replica Set

0

Star Trek has the best medical devices in all of sci-fi. The Next Generation showed that we just needed to wave a flashing gizmo over someone’s head to diagnose any number of maladies. So simplistic. So futuristic.
Now, you can take replicas of those fancy devices home, thanks to Factory Entertainment.
Factory Entertainment is producing a limited edition set of Star Trek: TNG medical devices that includes:

  • Hypospray (with interchangeable vials)
  • Hand Scanner
  • Wooden Presentation Case
Factory Entertainment

The devices feature lights and sounds. I’m not sure if the hypospray device had any lights, but we all know the sound it made.

Factory Entertainment’s TNG Medical Set Replica has been copied directly from surviving resources in the CBS archives to ensure accuracy. Our development team also spent many hours analyzing footage to fine-tune the details.
This 1:1 scale set replicates two iconic props used by 24th century physicians in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It consists of a Hypospray (with interchangeable vials) and a Hand Scanner. Both feature electronic light and/or sound effects and are crafted with heavy diecast metal bodies. Each numbered limited edition museum quality replica set comes with a wooden presentation case, cast metal plaque and a certificate of authenticity/prop story booklet and will make a fine addition to any Star Trek collection.
The Hypospray and the Hand Scanner each operate on three LR44 batteries (included).

I hope this means we’ll get a couple of tricorder replicas in the future. If they came with working LCDs, that’d be even cooler! I had the Playmates version of the standard one and the medical one. If you’ve ever seen those things modded with custom screens, you know how awesome they look.
This set will cost $374.99 and is set to come out next Spring. If you pre-order now, you get the set at a discount. If you wait, the price will go up to $399.99.
What other Star Trek replicas would you like to see make it to market? Let us know in the comments.

The Original Leatherface Gets Mezco’s MDS Treatment

Gunnar Hansen’s Leatherface version is and will always be definitive out of all the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. His look is the most iconic. His performance showed us the savage, scared, and somewhat tender side of the horror icon. Sure, he may have been a murderous cannibal, but you couldn’t help feel a little bad for the guy.
Now you can own a cute version of the chainsaw-wielding, hammer-smacking butcher, thanks to Mezco! He looks like he knows how to make really good headcheese.

“We ain’t in no hurry…cause you ain’t going no place, ha ha ha ha ha!”
Leatherface, the chainsaw-wielding cannibal, joins the Mezco Designer Series!
Leatherface is dressed to kill – outfitted in a short-sleeve collared shirt and tie under his real cloth apron, slacks, and cowboy boots. He comes complete with his infamous chainsaw and a hammer, which can be held neatly in his hands.
You can run, you can hide, but can you escape? For five friends, a typical summer afternoon drive becomes a terrifying nightmare…
MDS Leatherface stands 6″ tall, features 10 points of articulation, and comes packaged in a window box, perfect for display.

Sometimes ya just gotta smack some trespassing kids in the head with a hammer and make them cool off in the chest freezer. I don’t blame him.
I didn’t know it was possible to make Bubba look adorable, but Mezco did it. Now, where are Nubbins, Drayton, and Franklin? I’d love to have an entire set. Unfortunately, Nubbins (the hitchhiker) rarely gets the love he deserves in the toy industry.
While Leatherface was the big bad of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nubbins was the most disturbing. He was our first introduction to the Sawyer family and set the disturbing tone for the 1974 movie.
What other version of Leather should be part of the MDS line? TCM2? TCM3? The Andrew Bryniarski version? Let us know in the comments.

Two ‘The Suicide Squad’ Figures Are Exclusive To Target and Walmart

There’s less than a month to go before James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad hits theatres. I’m not sure what to make of this film yet. The first film was the victim of so much studio meddling that it left me totally uninterested in seeing any of these characters ever again.
Gunn has the ability to make inane comic book heroes and villains interesting when he is given the freedom to do so. The Suicide Squad is full of D-List characters that could benefit from Gunn’s style. Will he pull off another Guardian of the Galaxy but with a DC license? We’ll find out soon.
McFarlane Toys is coordinating a release of action figures based on the new film. This line will include Bloodsport, Polka Dot Man, Harley Quinn, and Peacemaker. When all four figures are purchased, you can also create possibly the film’s most interesting character, King Shark.

Over at Figures.com we saw that the build-a-figure line was going to have two variants that would be available at two different retailers.
When I first spotted these figures, I was confused as to why Bloodsport and Peacemaker didn’t come with alternate unmasked heads. Then it dawned on me, why give your figures these accessories when you can make them buy a totally new figure to get that option!
DC | McFarlane Toys
Yep, if you want the unmasked versions of these two, you’ll have to go to Target (Peacemaker) or Walmart (Bloodsport) and buy them there. No, these guys do not come with extra helmeted heads. Sigh. Both of them can be pre-ordered now by clicking on the store names.
The Suicide Squad as directed by James Gunn will be in theatres and HBO Max on August 6th.

What are your thoughts on these figures? Is it a good idea to split up exclusives among multiple retailers, especially in a time when pegs have stayed bare through multiple waves of other toy lines? Let us know in the comments.

11 Years Later, This Model of Kaneda’s Bike From ‘Akira’ Returns!

In 2010 Project BM released a 1/6th scale version of Kaneda’s bike from Akira, and it was amazing. Sadly, this was in the middle of the recession, so dropping a few hundred dollars on a toy was out of the question.
Good things come to those who wait, apparently. After 11 years, the bike is back. This is a direct re-release of the original complete with lights, sounds, and a huge amount of detail. We caught sight of those over at the Big Bad Toy Store.
The front end is removable to reveal the highly detailed suspension system and wheel detail. Not only do we get to see under the cowl, but the sound effects are also activated via pressing the accelerator and brake pedals.
If you were looking for the accompanying Kaneda figure, he hasn’t been listed yet.

Kaneda’s bike, from the global anime film AKIRA, is about to explode into collections worldwide! This renewed edition comes 11 years after the first release: an incredibly accurate, heavy weight, and highly detailed portrayal of this iconic high-tech motorcycle. The front suspension, which is accentuated with chrome detailing, accurately flexes; pressing the accelerator pedal triggers an engine sound, while pressing the brake pedal triggers a tire-squealing effect. You can even connect it to external speakers for immersive, high-quality audio playback!

The product has the following features and accessories:

  • 19.5 inches (50cm)
  • 1/6 Scale
  • Pressing the accelerator pedal triggers an engine sound
  • Connect to external speakers for immersive, high-quality audio playback
  • Front cowl
  • Light cover
  • Front-wheel covers (L/R)
  • Side covers (L/R)
  • Rear-wheel covers (L/R)
  • Rear-wheel frame cover
  • Tail cover
  • Side undercover (L/R)
  • Stand support

Kaneda is not included. The original figure and bike can still be found on eBay but can get pretty pricy.

Click here to order. The bike is currently in stock and is priced at $649.99.

Funimation Announces ‘SSSS.DYNAZENON’ English Dub Voice Cast

0

‘SSSS.Dynazenon’ is a sequel to 2018’s ‘SSSS.Gridman’ and the second installment in the shared Gridman Universe. The anime was developed by the Japanese production studio Trigger and will now receive an English dub voice cast.
“Get ready to suit up for some mecha vs. kaiju action, because the SSSS.DYNAZENON English dub is officially coming to Funimation,” the studio reported in a press release. “Starting July 9, you’ll be able to catch the first two episodes of the SSSS.DYNAZENON English dub right here on Funimation. The latest from studio TRIGGER is a stunner, so if you haven’t jumped in yet, now’s the perfect time!”
“And the cast for this one is stacked,” Funimation adds.
Dallas Reid (Black Clover) will voice series protagonist Yomogi. Aaron Campbell (Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun) will perform Gauma and Kristen McGuire (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) will voice Yume. Jason Liebrecht, Aaron Campbell, Megan Shipman, Y. Chang, David Matranga, Kara Edwards, Lee George, Elizabeth Maxwell, Emily Neves, Zach Bolton, Mark Allen Jr., and AmaLee round out the rest of the cast.
McGuire expressed her excitement on social media, saying, “You can hear me sing in episode 1 of (SSSS.Dynazenon). I’m actually very self conscious about my singing, so this was really scary for me. I practiced the song a lot before this scene because I wanted it to be perfect.”

The official synopsis says, “The appearance of a kaiju followed by the entry of the gigantic robot, Dynazenon, leads Gauma to reveal his secret of being a ‘kaiju user.'”
The plot continues, “Yomogi Asanaka is just an ordinary high school boy when he encounters a young man named Gauma, who claims he is a “Kaiju User”. When the city is attacked by a kaiju, Gauma summons the giant robot Dynazenon to battle it. Yomogi, his classmate Yume Minami, and local NEET Koyomi Yamanaka are caught up in the battle and end up becoming Gauma’s copilots for Dynazenon. Together, they must uncover and put a stop to whatever is behind the kaiju attacks.”
