Toynami Announces Comic-Con@Home Exclusive Robotech Figures!

Robotech is another one of those franchises that have a messy history regarding its integration into the American media landscape of the 1980s. All I can remember is a Battloid somehow made it into the transformer line. Then some robots appeared in the Mechassault/Battletech tabletop game.
Oh, ’80’s toy license deals were messier than a perm coated in Aquanet.
Those days are, thankfully, long behind us. Now Harmony Gold has things under control, and Robotech is represented the way it should be. Speaking of which, Toynami has some new releases and an exclusive set coming out for Comic-Con@Home this year.

Mezco’s Mothra Gets Flocked and Boxed In This New Collector’s Set

It was 57 years ago when the king of the monsters clashed with the winged protector of Earth. Mothra VS. Godzilla was the Queen of the Monsters’ second appearance in the Shōwa era of giant creature films. Some tweaks were made to her lore, but ultimately, this appearance against Godzilla made her a mainstay (in one form or another) in the series for decades.
Mezco is doing the Queen justice with this upcoming box set. Inside the replica Shobijin (faires) case is a 9″ Mothra with beautiful flocking. Also included, as to be expected given the box, are the twin faires/Cosmos/Shobijin as played by Keiko Imamura and Sayaka Osawa.

Inspired by the 1964 film ‘Mothra vs. Godzilla’ , the massive moth measures 9” in length from wing to wing. Mothra features a flocked body and an articulated head and wings. The Shobijin Twins feature flocked shoulder capes and come complete with two different head portraits, two sets of interchangeable arms, and can join hands – allowing for a multitude of display options.
Mothra and the Shobijin Twins are packaged in a train case, just like the one seen in the film. Mothra’s display base can attach to the packaging so she can hover over the Shobijin twins.

Keep in mind that these photos are only prototypes. So, some changes to the colors and flocking may take place over the next several months. Flocking, when done wrong, can be a giant pain for collectors. Expect Mezco to put out a solid product.
Mothra and the Twins come with the following features:
(2) pairs of clasped Shobijin arms
(2) pairs of holding Shobinjin arms
(2) standard Shobijin heads • Two (2) singing pose Shobijin heads
(2) Shobijin display bases
(1) Mothra display base (attaches to packaging)

Pre-orders are open now, with an expected shipping date somewhere between March and May 2022. Click here to pre-order your Mothra set for $60.00.

Fans Donate to Keep Studio Ghibli Museum Running

0

Japan has been going through a bit of a tough time keeping things running as usual with the pandemic going throughout the country, putting certain businesses at risk of closure.

Studio Ghibli Museum has become one of those places that has faced the danger of being shut down. The museum was personally designed by Hayao Myazaki, who often visiting the cafe they have there. They would sometimes showcase exclusive short films in its theater and a visit is much like stepping into a blended universe of Studio Ghibli’s classic films.

The city of Mitaka, where the museum is located, announced a “Furusato Tax” online crowdfunding fund to support the Studio Ghibli Museum which has taken a hard hit during the pandemic.

A Furusato Tax is a donatable tax many Japanese people who moved away to different cities use to support their hometowns from far away, usually with a local delicacy given in return as a thank you gift. In this case, Mitaka is taking all Furusato Taxes donated and sending them to The Tokuma Memorial Cultural Foundation for Animation, who operate the museum. The fund goal was set to 10,000,000 yen (about $90,872 USD).

Fans have really shown how much they appreciate the museum by far exceeding funding for the initial goal amount. As of July 16th, they have raised 13,284,564 yen (about 120,595.00), sitting at a comfortable 118% with plenty of time still remaining. Everyone who donated will receive a thank-you card.

It’s a very cool thing to see a supporting community of fans coming together to help a struggling company that has given so much to the animated world full of imagination and wonder.

‘The Green Knight’ Director Explains Editing The Arthurian Film

0

‘A Ghost Story’ director David Lowery was set to release his film adaption of the Arthurian legend ‘The Green Knight.’ Apparently, Lowery was not satisfied with the first cut of the fantasy movie and took time during the pandemic lockdown to re-cut it to what he wanted it to be.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, ‘The Old Man & the Gun’ director explained, “Sometimes movies just aren’t ready.”
The movie was set to make its premiere at the 2020 SXSW festival but was delayed due to the covid restrictions. Looking back, Lowery decided to make some edits to the movie to get it to a place where he could be happy with it.
“I just gave myself permission to dig back into the movie, unlock it, and rework the entire thing,” Lowery said. “I found the affection I needed to cut it with love in my heart instead of disappointment and hate. It’s different—it’s much better.”
He also discussed how several films from the eighties, such as ‘Willow,’ influenced the production of ‘The Green Knight.’
“We couldn’t afford to do an actual, literal period piece in the 14th century with period-accurate costumes,” he said. “So [we were] finding this weird middle ground where it doesn’t have to be true to history and yet also feels grounded. Films like ‘Willow’ and ‘Ladyhawke’ did that really well.”
Lowery also said that practical effects and costume designs were used for the titular Green Knight’s design.
“We went through a lot of crazier designs, but ultimately I wanted him to be an actor underneath that makeup. We even talked about doing things like a puppet. I decided the best thing to do was cast a really great actor and design some incredible prosthetics around him,” Lowery explained. “There are no VFX at all.”
Composed in the fourteenth century, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is one of the most popular epic poems to come out of the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
The story follows Sir Gawain after he is given the opportunity to behead the Green Knight on the condition that the latter can do the same to Arthur’s knight. His journey involves temptation, tests of courage, and encountering mortal enemies. It was translated and expanded upon by ‘The Lord of the Rings’ author J.R.R. Tolkien and adapted as a film twice before.

Hasbro Accused of ‘Indoctrinating’ Children with Critical Race Theory Employee Training Program

0

The world’s largest toy company, Hasbro, is being accused of ‘indoctrinating’ workers with CRT (Critical Race Theory) according to a company employee.

Hasbro is the manufacturer of such beloved brands as My Little Pony, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Mr. Potato Head and so many more. They’re also the current manufacturer of most Disney, Marvel and Star Wars toys.

David Johnson, a Hasbro packaging engineer, talked to Project Veritas on video about Hasbro’s hyper-focus on race when it comes to employee training materials current year.

“My name is David Johnson. I’m a packaging engineer for Hasbro. They are attempting to covertly push CRT, critical race theory, through branding and messaging through their products,” Johnson says in the interview. “This is the program developed by ‘The Conscious Kid‘, which is working with Hasbro to teach children about racial bias at an early age.

The non-profit organization’s program allegedly attempts to explain how racial bias is formed by children at an early age, and, according to Johnson, posits that toddlers are just as bigoted as adults.

The Conscious Kid, as it turns out, is an organization run by the husband and wife team of Katie Ishizuka and Ramón Stephens. If they sound somewhat familiar, it’s because these two made waves by slamming Dr. Seuss with a paper called “The Cat is Out of the Bag.”

That paper led to a modern-day book banning, with some Dr. Seuss books being pulled from sales channels and libraries all over the country.

Ishizuka was railing against Dr. Seuss years before that, claiming The Cat in the Hat was a racist caricature… and seemingly using the media attention to push The Conscious Kid Social Justice Library.

(Think Loot Crate, but with social justice kids’ books. Or something.)

While the duo are celebrated in some literary and academic circles now, it wasn’t too long ago that Ishizuka and Stephens launched a failed crowdfunding campaign for their organization back in 2016. It managed to raise just over $3,400.

Apparently business has picked up since then, as Hasbro executives have decided that these two are somehow the most qualified people in the world to help spearhead the international toy company’s diversity and inclusion training.

Johnson, a Black man, said that coming forward isn’t something he wanted to do, and he understands it will likely cost him his job.

“This isn’t something I want to do; this is something I felt I had to do. This is a hill worth dying on,” explains Johnson. “I’ve seen this ideology a lot over the past seven years. To have it so in-my-face at my place of work was just astounding to me.”

“To just state categorically that, at five years old, your children are as racist as the adults – which is implying that the parents are also racist in some manner – I just think it’s absurd.”

Hasbro isn’t the first major corporation to suffer blowback from employees for pushing ‘wokeness’ in a post George Floyd world.

Coca-Cola was blasted by employees for a using a training program developed by White Fragility author Robin DiAngelo. Not long after, Disney’s Reimagine Tomorrow program was leaked, and it effectively asked employees to check their own privilege via a questionnaire.

The latter is highly hypocritical, considering that Disney is catering more and more to the rich with each passing year.

Both attempts by these corporations to “lecture” their employees ended in massive PR failure, and both companies wound up walking back the programs.

Well, maybe now we have some idea as to why Cobra Commander can’t wear a hood in current year, why the next My Little Pony series seems to focus heavily on race relations, and why Hasbro-owned Wizards of the Coast is focusing so much on race in Dungeons & Dragons.

This still doesn’t explain the gender neutral Mr. Potato Heads, but maybe another Hasbro employee will dish on that fiasco in due time.

DC Universe Brings Back Tim Burton Vibes With New ‘Batman 89’ Comic Book

0

The 1989 film ‘Batman’ directed by Tim Burton helped bring the Dark Knight back into the forefront of pop culture. Starring Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne and Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent. The 1992 sequel ‘Batman Returns’ brought in Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.
Now DC Comics is reconnecting fans with that era of Gotham City with a new six-part comic book miniseries.
“Step Back Into the Gotham City of Tim Burton’s Seminal Classic ‘Batman’ movies! Batman ’89 by Screenwriter Sam Hamm and Artist Joe Quinones Begins on August 10,” DC said in a press release.
“Step back into the Gotham of Tim Burton’s seminal classic Batman movies on August 10! Batman ’89 by screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) will pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director in an incredible new comic book miniseries,” they continue. “When the new six-issue comic book run launches next month, Gotham City is being torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets! As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: BATMAN! And he’ll get Bruce Wayne’s help in taking down the Dark Knight!”
“In this first look preview, all the classic elements of Burton’s Batman are on full display. Take a look, and then scroll through to pick the covers you want your local comic shop to order for you,” DC adds.
Along with the standard cover by Quinones, each issue will feature a range of variant covers including by artists Jerry Ordway, Ken Taylor, Taurin Clarke, Francesco Mattina, Mico Suayan, Carla Cohen, and Warren Louw.
The story serves as a sequel of sorts to the 1989 film with an appearance by fan-favorite villain Two-Face who will come after Gotham City.

Swing From Buildings with This Batman: The Animated Series Grapnel

If there was one thing that really drew me to Batman as a kid, it was the tights. I mean the gadgets. Batarangs, Batmobiles, Bat-Shark-Repellant. All that stuff. Most of all, the devices that helped the caped crusader traverse the Gotham City skyline. That freedom to swing from rooftop to rooftop hits with a kid who is trapped in a rural country setting.

We spotted this replica over at The Big Bad Toy Store. I always wanted one as a kid in the early ’90s. Who didn’t want to swing from building to building like the Dark Knight? Batman: The Animated Series kept the grapnel gun very basic. It was just a t-shaped device with a claw grapple that would fire out at a high rate of speed. It looked cool. It was functional. It was never made into a replica until now.
Previously other companies have released the spear gun from Batman ’89, but the animated version went under the radar for some reason. Thanks to NECA for going after something like this.
Not only does it look spot on to the animated version, but it is also functional. Well, you can’t swing around Gotham City with it, but a grapnel gun does launch the plastic grapple out, and a small motor does reel it back in. Pretty cool, considering a lot of replicas tend to be static props.

Click here to pre-order yours. It should be shipping in August 2021 and is currently $39.99.

This full-size replica of Batman’s signature gadget, the Grapnel Launcher, comes from the extraordinary and beloved Batman: The Animated Series!
It’s over 7″ in length, with a grapnel hook attachment and a motorized spool that retracts the rope and hook after firing.
Uses 3 LR1 batteries, not included.

What other Batman props should NECA tackle next? Let us know in the comments.

Dude, Super7’s Ultimates line is like a retro action figure genie. I wish for more classic cartoons to get the series’s treatment, then boom a new announcement hits.
This time around, G.I. Joe is joining the mix. Snake Eyes, Duke, Cobra Commander, and a BAT Trooper are part of the initial wave of figures. These are a mix of cartoon accurate figures and callbacks to the first line of 3.75″ toys from 1982.

G.I. Joe’s Field Commander, Sergeant Conrad S. Hauser – better known as Duke – knows multiple languages, but the one he may be most fluent in is the language of kicking Cobra tail! This made-to-order 7” scale fully articulated G.I. Joe ULTIMATES! figure of Duke comes with interchangeable heads and hands and a variety of accessories, allowing you to create many of your favorite cartoon and vintage toy looks. Be sure to pull the trigger for the mysterious and dangerous Snake Eyes ULTIMATES! Figure for your G.I Joe collection!

Every good story needs a villain, and Cobra Commander is the kind of egomaniacal archvillain legends are made of. This made-to-order 7” scale fully articulated G.I. Joe ULTIMATES! figure of Cobra Commander comes with interchangeable hands- one holds a cobra wrapped around the Earth, which you may recognize from a video game commercial- and a variety of accessories, including multiple weapons, his snake scepter and soft goods cape, and more! You’re going to love the Cobra Commander ULTIMATES! figure as much as he loves the sound of his own voice, and that’s a VERY high bar.

Super7

They may lack the over-the-top dramatic flourishes exuded by many of Cobra’s notable characters, but Cobra Battle Android Troopers (B.A.T.) more than make up for that in their ability to unleash pure battlefield carnage and mayhem! Star Trek Toys To Be Resurrected By Playmates Again?

Where is all the Star Trek merchandise? That’s what I’ve been asking myself for a while. Polar Lights has done a good job of relaunching older AMT models. The company has also produced some new kits from the original series and the new Kurtzman series. The toylines, however, have been stagnant for years.
In the 1990s, Playmates Toys ruled the Star Trek landscape. Nearly every character from every Star Trek series, old and contemporary, got their own action figure. Old Scotty? Yep. Young Scotty? Yup. Khan? Oh, yes. Barclay? Who didn’t own ten Barclay figures?
Then for the longest time, the toyline stayed dormant. That was until Figures.com published a PR announcement from Playmates. Karl Aaronian, the company’s senior vice president, stated:

“We’re excited to be transported back into the Star Trek Universe, a brand and world that we know very well. Our product team includes some lifelong super fans, like me, and we are honored to join with ViacomCBS again to help further engage fans with the wealth of new content coming as well as captivate a new generation of kids with the positive values that Gene Roddenberry introduced in his Trek world.”

Playmates Toys has been a bit of a non-entity for a long time. Sure, the company still makes toys, most recently some Godzilla figures and a series about two kids named Vlad and Nikki. No idea. Don’t ask me.
The 2009 Star Trek reboot toyline tie-in didn’t go over too well. I remember seeing the figures overflowing on the clearance endcaps of Toys R Us. Could Playmates recapture the lightning it had for most of the ’90s? Is the market there for ST: Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks figures? I’ve been following the IPs merchandise lines for a few years and noticed that TNG and OS stuff sells well while the new stuff stays on the shelves.
From TMNT to Star Trek, the company put out a ton of great toys. I had quite a few Next Generation figures, including the transporter playset and the tricorder replica. Good times. I’m not sure that Star Trek will bring in the same fanbase in its current state.
