Shout! Factory TV Is Revisiting Cult Classic ‘Piranha’ With “Piranhathon”

0

Producer Roger Corman’s 1978 creature feature horror film ‘Piranha’ terrified audiences as they watched as lethal, genetically altered piranha attack visitors at a resort, sealing its place as a cult classic. Corman returned to produce a 1995 remake brought the movie back into the viewpoint of audiences and served as the cable film debut of ‘That 70’s Show’ star Mila Kunis.
Shout! Factory TV has announced that they plan on doing a back-to-back showing of the two versions of ‘Piranha’ as a way to pay homage to the horror flick.
“Jump in with us…the water is bloody fine,” Shout said in a press release. “Just when you thought it was safe to take a dip in the water again…Piranhathon Bites Back-to-Back! On August 9th, stream double the camp, double the teeth and double the terror when Shout! Factory TV™ presents a 24-hour marathon of Joe Dante’s 1978 cult classic Piranha and its 1995 remake starring Mila Kunis and Soleil Moon Frye.”
They explain, “Fans can watch the films streamed all day and night long in a back-to-back format presentation that is sure to keep everyone coming back for seconds. The marathon begins Monday, August 9 at 12 a.m. PT on Shout! Factory TV.”
“In 1978, audiences discovered Piranha, widely considered one of the very best films inspired by the success of Jaws, and for over 40 years Piranha has been one of the true cult gems in the Roger Corman canon,” Shout adds. “The 1995 remake of the cult classic film features Mila Kunis and Soleil Moon Frye and was also produced by Roger Corman.”
You can check out the trailer for the 1978 version below:

Shout describes the synopsis as:

Lost River Lake was a thriving resort until they discovered … Piranha! While searching for missing teenagers, rookie skip-tracer Maggie McKeon (Heather Menzies) and booze-soaked river rat Paul Grogan (Bradford Dillman) stumble upon a top-secret military laboratory conducting genetic research on piranha fish for the purpose of developing the most lethal form of biological warfare imaginable. When the deadly eating machines are accidentally released from the compound, they’re soon headed downstream, consuming everything — and anyone — in their path. With Paul and Maggie in hot pursuit, the piranhas’ next stop is the children’s summer camp, where Paul’s young daughter is vacationing, and then the newly opened, multi-million-dollar water resort. Time is running out, and the piranha are hungry!

Showtime’s Dexter Returns to TV and The Action Figure Market

Sometimes you just have to cut people up and dump their bodies just off the coast of Miami. I’m a Floridian. It’s almost second nature. But, sadly, not all of us can get away with it … why are there sirens outside my front door?
Well, look who showed up out of nowhere just in time for his return to Showtime. Of course, it’s everyone’s favorite charismatic killer, Dexter Morgan.
Dexter is getting a new figure in classic 3.75″ form. He is an SDCC Entertainment Earth exclusive. Mr. Morgan comes with a few accessories, including a fabric apron and an enamel pin. He will be silently entering your homes this August.

Showtime | Entertainment Earth

Dexter action figures are back, just in time for the long-awaited return of Dexter in 2021 on Showtime. This Series 2 “Dark Passenger” version of Dexter Morgan presents the forensic technician / serial killer dressed in army green, with a removable black fabric apron. An extremely limited edition of only 304 individually numbered pieces, Dexter stands about 3 3/4-inches tall and comes with a badge/lanyard. Plus, accessories exclusive to this figure include a rope, a 6-inch x 6-inch sheet of plastic, and a 2-inch wide x 1-inch tall enamel pin featuring the show’s logo!

The forensic analyst who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer had a less than acceptable season finale in 2013 after eight seasons. We found out Dexter was still alive while boating directly into a hurricane. Did he float atop his dead sister’s body to shore?
Not only will there be a new figure, but the show is being resurrected as well to give the character a proper send-off.

Michael C. Hall did deserve a better conclusion after turning in a great performance for most of those eight seasons. What we know is that Dexter has a new light and new identity. He is trying to keep his tendencies under control, but you know it is only a matter of time before the Dark Passenger has to be unleashed.
Dexter: New Blood will premiere on November 7th at 9 PM ET/PT on Showtime.
What are your thoughts on Dexter’s return after a seven-year absence? Any worries? Will we get called man-babies and entitled if the series fails us? Let us know in the comments.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’d like to see Psycho Circus resurrected. Not the album or the tour, but the toys from McFarlane. I was working at Target when these things came out, and we got many complaints from parents. Apparently, we can have G.I. Joes, Spawn, Barbie, and Teletubbies, but a theatrical rock band from the 1970s pushes things past the limit.
Oh, and there was a PC/Dreamcast game, too. Want to see something really dated? Check it out:

What do you think of this KISS box set? Do Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss still have a place in pop culture today? Let us know in the comments.

‘Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans’ Producer Explains How The MCU Influenced The Animated Film

‘Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans’ is the finale to the animated epic “Tales of Arcadia” franchise by Guillermo del Toro. It was made by DreamWorks Animation and released to a wide audience Netflix like its predecessors.
The film culminates with the animated series  ‘Trollhunters,’ ‘3Below,’ and ‘Wizards,’ combining characters, settings, and lore from all three of the shows. To explain how they made it work, producer Marc Guggenheim sat down with Collider to discuss the movie and cited the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a key inspiration for the franchise.
Here, I always say the Marvel movies were very instructive. I think,” he explained. “Marvel does many things well, and I often say that Marvel has given us the answers to the test and one of the things they do well is they clearly have this interlocking, interwoven, cinematic universe, but they also know that not every audience member is going to see every single TV show and every single movie.”
Guggenheim continued, “So, part of it’s sort of following that lead and really I think just being diligent about like, is this moment going to pull someone who hasn’t watched the shows out the movie? That’s really what we’re always examining each moment in the movie. And also, like I said, we had written and animated a prologue that really was designed to be a primer to people who haven’t seen all the shows. That really just tells you that the basic information of what you need to know and I think it does its job well.”
He also mentioned how anime and Del Toro’s own ‘Pacific Rim’ played a part in inspiring the film.
“We talked a lot about Attack on Titan, the anime,” he explained. “Obviously, I think it’s pretty clear in some sequences that all the things that influenced Pacific Rim are inside here. And we also talked a lot in the writer’s room about not just our visual impressions, but our favorite TV shows and movies, which stuck the landing in a satisfying way.”
‘Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans’ is available to watch on Netflix. You can check out the trailer below:

‘Kingdom’ Is Getting An Ashin Spin-Off On Netflix

0

The Korean fantasy political thriller ‘Kingdom’ has been airing on the Netflix streaming service since 2019 and has become popular with both critics and audiences. Following the conclusion of season two, Netflix announced that the character of Ashin, played by actress Jun Ji-hyun, would receive a “special stand-alone” titled ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ episode that would explore her story.
“Today, we’re excited to share the expansion of one of the most beloved stories on Netflix. We’re taking the next leap in the world of Kingdom with the release of our standalone special episode, ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North,'” Netflix said in a press release. “It’s a look into the character of Ashin, played by the incredibly talented Gianna Jun in her Netflix debut. Ashin and her father have settled within the Kingdom of Joseon when they encounter a mysterious disease that sets Ashin down a path of betrayal, prejudice, and revenge.”
Netflix Director of Content (Korea) Keo Lee expressed enthusiasm for this spin-off saying, “I’ve been lucky to be a part of Kingdom’s journey for the past five years. I remember the first time I met Kim Eun-hee, the series’ visionary creator. We were at a small cafe by her office on a balmy June afternoon when I popped the question: ‘What’s the story you’ve always wanted to tell, but never been able to?’ It’s my favorite question to ask, and as a huge fan of her shows, I’m not entirely sure if I was asking as an admirer or as a representative of Netflix.”
You can check out the subtitled trailer below:

According to the official synopsis of ‘Kingdom,’ the show is set “during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty, three years after the Imjin War, the first season of Kingdom follows the story of Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) and his subordinates, who stumble across an unnatural plague that resurrects the dead amidst his investigation of a brewing political conspiracy and rumors of the King of Joseon’s death. Amidst the chaos and death that ensues, Chang meets allies who try to make a stand in the city-state of Sangju before it spreads further into the province, only to discover that the plague has already adapted.”

As The World Falls Down, Pick Up These Labyrinth Mini Epic Vinyl Figures!

Jim Henson’s cinematic efforts were before their time. The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were not financially successful but remain staples of the dark fantasy genre and are loved decades on. Maybe audiences weren’t ready for this stuff? Possibly. Will we see a resurgence in this genre? Well, we saw what happened on Netflix…
Fantasy may be in quality limbo right now, but at least the collectibles market is thriving. Weta will be expanding the Epic Vinyl line of stylized statues with characters from Labyrinth. Who is making the cut? The Goblin King, Sarah, and the loveable Ludo.
Each 6″ tall figure Weta Workshop’s Mauro Santini and Jorgelina Yeme.

Iron Studios’ Power Rangers Statues Join To Form A Mega-Diorama!

We’ve been seeing a lot of classic Power Rangers merch showing up recently. By classic, I mean the Saban production we got here in the States. It came out during a time in my teens where I had lost interest in Saturday morning shows, but even I knew the toys would be big business.
When we saw the original figures appear in Toys R Us, we scooped up a few and resold them at the local flea market at a nice profit. Ah, capitalism! If I’d know just how massive the whole Power Rangers thing would become in the next couple of decades, I would have invested even more money in the merchandise.
What started as $10 action figures has evolved into $100+ collectibles, as we see with the recent announcement from Iron Studios. In addition, the company will be releasing a series of statues based on Saban’s initial Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series.
The 1/10th scale statues include:

  • Zordon
  • White Ranger
  • Red Ranger
  • Green Ranger
  • Blue Ranger
  • Pink Ranger
  • Yellow Ranger
  • Green Ranger

Nope, there’s no Alpha … yet. But, even without the manic robot, this is a cool set. By buying all eight statues, they join together to form a massive diorama. Check out the pics below.

Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow Kickoff Hasbro’s Mego G.I. Joe Line

How many of you had Mego action figures growing up? OK, the name may not ring a bell, but if you had a bunch of 8″ figures with cloth outfits and they ranged from Planet of the Apes to DC, to Marvel, to Sonny and Cher, then you certainly had a Mego or two. The Mego Corporation loved having a diversified portfolio of licenses to pull from to make action figures. So you could have a crossover with literally any property that was hot in the 1970s and early ’80s.
Over the past few years, the Mego line has come back into the mainstream, kind of. They’re not lining the toy aisles, but you can usually find them in the “collectibles” endcaps at Target or Walmart. The company has continued to produce a diverse line of toys. We found Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka right next to the 2003 Leatherface just last week, for example. Those are cool for the adult collector, but what about the kids? How do you draw them into this kind of toyline?
By making G.I. Joes! OK, it may be nothing more than a fun little one-off, but Hasbro is producing two figures from the long-running action figure property. The two characters that are getting the Mego treatment are Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. When thinking of ultimate rivalries, those two are the first that come to mind, with a close second behind Duke and Cobra Commander.

Snake Eyes. Storm Shadow. A rivalry for the ages, born out of the shattered bond between brothers-in-arms. We’ve teamed up with Mego Corporation, creators of a classic action figure style with soft goods costume pieces, to bring these iconic G.I. Joe characters into the fun, retro Mego style for the first time ever… with the same premium details G.I. Joe fans look for.

The retro figures will come with the following features and accessories:

  • Legendary Hasbro characters in a nostalgic, 8-inch-scale Mego style
  • Premium Hasbro attention to detail
  • Detailed helmet sculpt and paint hits honor the OG characters
  • Removeable, premium soft-goods ninja costume pieces with character-inspired detailing
  • Character-inspired weapon and gear accessories
  • Highly poseable for play or display… your way
  • Collectible packaging inspired by classic G.I. Joe cardbacks

Pre-orders have already started, and the two-pack is expected to ship in the Fall of 2021. These rivals will cost $59.99, and right now, they are only shipping in the US.

The Journey to Requiem Part 2

0

Continued from Part 1

It all started in 2015, when Jarrod came home from school. Jarrod told his dad, Ryan Nead, he had joined a film class in school. Curious, Ryan asked what sort of things they would have to do for the class. Jarrod explained to his father they would be required to make a trailer, a commercial, and for their final project, something really big. Ryan was excited to help his son create something fun and special. After filming all the scenes, they set about editing the pieces together to what would become a Ghostbusters movie filled with special effects, complete with costumes and everything. It was after completing this project with his son that Ryan realized how much he enjoyed video editing.

As a fun idea, he thought about what he could work on next. Ryan remembered how many of the old animated shows he grew up with had often re-used animated sequences, such as in Filmations’ Star Trek, He-Man, and She-ra. He became inspired to take that idea and try to piece together the final episode that had never been officially produced past the script, “Requiem” from Dungeons & Dragons.

Using inspiration from the fan comic by Reinaldo Rocha, Ryan extracted each episode from his DVD set and started going through each one as fast as he could to get certain types of animations he would need to recreate the script into animation. Whether it was Hank running, Eric upset, Sheila mad, or Diana upset, running, jumping, flipping. He would gather these scenes and try to organize them into a timeline in the video editing software. However, the tv series did not have everything he needed to create the scenes. So he began to extract pieces from other animated series. He would edit each scene, cutting out what he needed, using up two phones to death in an app called Autodesk Sketcbook, with a stylus (I’m guessing it was a Samsung Note phone), as well as editing the clips and pieces on the computer.

It was a year into this project when he realized he needed help if he was ever going to finish this. He uploaded a sample clip on his youtube channel, and soon found help from someone named Marshall Hubbard. Marshall is a life long artist who had never animated anything in his life. After Ryan showed him how he was doing the animation, Marshall helped in any way he could. For the rest of this journey, he did artwork and gave critiques on anything that could be improved.

Ryan used as many clips he could to show characters doing what they needed to do to act out a scene. And this included the voices. Using as much of the radio show as he could, he soon ran into problems with the background sound effects not lining up with what was going on, and some of the voice work were causing a bit of a struggle to get right with what he was creating. In the end, Ryan was able to redo 4 of the 8 voices so they would sound as clean and clear as possible. Katie Leigh reprised her role for Sheila and also voiced Bobby. Katie’s daughter Laura was just 14 years old when she voiced Diana on the radio show. Now in her 20s, Laura still sounded the same. So she was able to replay the voice of Diana. Ryan’s 15-year-old son Jarrod redid all the lines for Presto, which was particularly important since he had extra lines at the end that were not in the script.

The script ends at a cliffhanger. What do the kids decide to do? Go home? Stay? Ryan felt like he had an obligation to give fellow fans an actual ending, while also not wanting to appear as though he was trying to improve upon Michael Reaves’ script. He wanted to respect the script and the characters. After much thought and careful consideration, he added about 2 minutes worth of extra scenes at the end, starting at the 28 minute mark. He also added some things during the credits to give the story a more completed ending.

After 52 months, 4 years and 4 months, the project was complete. Ryan uploaded the completed episode to his youtube channel in 2020. After 9 hours the video had amassed 10,000 views. After 12 hours, Ryan was sent subtitles of the entire dialogue in Portuguese and English from a fan named Arthur Barbaro, from Brazil. The fan episode exploded into popularity from as far as Brazil, Spain, France, Ukraine, and Russia. The episode has even been listed on IMDB complete with credits to all who worked to bring the episode to life.

Here is the finished fan-created episode. What do you think? Does it look like a final episode that could have been created in the 80s?

Ryan Nead, and all those who helped him throughout the years, did not do this for profit. It was done with love and admiration for a story that’s touched millions of kids young and old. It gave them hope, encouragement and an adventure of a life time to experience.
This was a creation done for the fans, by the fans. And nothing less.

This is an interview with Ryan and Marshall that goes into a bit more detail about how the fan creation came to life. I recommend you listen AFTER you watch the fan-episode Requiem, as there will be spoilers for the ending:

Here are some interesting tidbits Ryan shared in the fan group on Facebook, explaining some of what he used as sources to create the scenes for the episode:

There is a tree that appears when Diana does her first swing at the hydra head (right before she turns to see Dungeon Master standing on the ledge) that tree is from a 1935 Disney cartoon called “The Old Mill” it was creepy looking and I liked it, so I cut it out, hollowed out the knots and put in the weird glowing orange membrane.

The salt flats come from an episode of Ben 10. I dont know if they were supposed to represent salt flats in the original episode. But I felt they captured a alien look rather well. Funny thing is, I frequently had to place the kids in positions so they would cover up some elements from Ben 10 that had creeped into the backgrounds. Therefore, if you could shift Hank out of the way a bit, you would see a piece of Ben 10s head.

The plain of dreams where Venger and Dungeon Master make their wager is constructed from the Stonehenge like structure called Mount Anguish in the Doomgaze episode of Thundercats. Recolored to match the stone look from Reinaldo Rochas comic book first page.

The campfire scenes, they all come from various episodes of Gargoyles. The water is a shifting woodgrain effect my video editor does.

That pirate ship, most of its components come from an episode of Scooby doo. The ship was always in the water and never flew, so I found another cartoon with a flying ship (that wasnt acceptable to use in entirety) and cut away its hull, then blended the lower hull onto the scooby doo ship.

The volcano’s all come from He-mans 2002 series. I love how those background scenes looked. Almost like a moonscape.

The cenotaph is a hodgepodge of so many different castle pieces, I could never begin to remember them all. The outside however is the Tower of Traps from Thundercats. With a new base and door installed.

You can read more details on this post thread in the Dungeons & Dragon Cartoon Tv Series Facebook fan-group.

Toei Announces New Film ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’

0

Toei Animation made a huge announcement for fans of the Dragon Ball universe with the release of a teaser for a new film ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ at the Comic-Con @ Home 2021. Mangaka and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama will be heavily involved. While the trailer did not give much in the way of the plot, it showed protagonist Goku training before the title appears.
Check out the trailer here:

According to Crunchyroll, “After a scorching performance of the “CHA LA HEAD CHA LA” theme song from Dragon Ball Z by Hironobu Kageyama, Goku VA Masako Nozawa joined Toei Animation producer Norihiro Hayashida, and Toriyama’s editor and Dragon Ball series executive producer Akio Iyoku to discuss the new film, showing off character art for the likes of Piccolo, Pan, and Krillin. We also got a look at some of the detailed environments before they moved on to talking about how heavily involved Toriyama is in the film once again.”
“He was deeply involved in the last movie ‘Broly’ as well, but he’s even more invested this time,” Iyoku explained during a panel. He added that “Toriyama-sensei himself would say this is the best movie yet” after revealing Toriyama was developing the script while the movie ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly’ was in development.
Concept art for fan-favorite characters Krillin, Pan, and Piccolo was also released during the panel.

They also showed concept artwork for two new characters that will be featured in the movie. They did not have a name yet.

You can watch the full panel here:

As Funimation noted back in May when the film was first announced, “‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly,’ which debuted in Japanese theaters in December 2018, grossed over $124 million worldwide during its theatrical run, including $35 million in the Japanese box office and over $30 million in the United States box office. It’s currently the thirteenth highest grossing anime film of all time worldwide.”
