Are you athletic, dexterous, and brave enough to take on an obstacle course based on Frogger? You know, the game where you play as a frog that must dodge cars and trucks to make it to safety? NBC’s subscription service Peacock has just the show for you if you’re up to the task.
Starting on September 9th, new episodes of Frogger will debut every Thursday exclusively on Peacock. The show will be hosted by Damon Wayans Jr. and Kyle Brandt, where the duo will provide running commentary similar to other shows in this genre.
The show Frogger brings to life this popular franchise and supersizes it on an epic course! Audiences and contestants alike will be transported into a wild, whimsical Frogger world, filled with all the simple but challenging elements of the mega-hit from Konami. Contestants from across the country will test their talent in a competition requiring skill, strength, strategy, and problem-solving smarts. Who will have what it takes to be America’s finest FROGGER and jump away with $100,000?
The pitch is that Frogger was the greatest video game of the ’80s. That’s … a bit of a stretch. I liked Frogger; I even had a copy of it on my C64 as a kid. The game itself was entirely OK. It was no Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Smash TV, that’s for sure. But then again, I don’t think Smash TV would make for a great obstacle course television show.
Frogger is basically a Wipeout clone, but less intense and what sounds like unfunny commentary. I’ve been spoiled by John Anderson and John Henson from the golden age of Wipeout, I guess.
What are your thoughts on this classic arcade game becoming an obstacle course game show? Does it look intense enough to be entertaining? What other would ’80s games make for a good game show? Let us know in the comments.
