Gkids To Dub ‘Pompo The Cinephile’ Ahead Of North American Theatrical Release
‘Pompo The Cinephile’ was directed by Takayuki Hirao and made by the production company CLAP. It was an adaption of the shojo manga by Shogo Sugitani that kicked off in April 2017. Following several delays to the pandemic, it was released in Japan in July 2021 after becoming an “official selection” at the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival.
Gkids announced on their website that they had acquired the North American distribution rights to the film with plans for a release in the original Japanese and in an English dub.
GKIDS President David Jesteadt explained, “’Pompo the Cinephile’ is a completely charming and original work.” He added, “Both hilarious and earnest, its contemplation of what it takes to pursue an artistic vision is an inspiration for these times. I cannot wait to share the experience with audiences in theaters early next year.”
The official synopsis explains that “Pompo is a talented and gutsy producer in “Nyallywood,” the movie-making capital of the world. Although she’s known for B-movies, one day Pompo tells her movie-loving but apprehensive assistant Gene that he will direct her next script: a delicate drama about an aging and tormented creative genius, starring the legendary and Brando-esque actor Martin Braddock, and a young actress seeking her first break. But when the production heads towards chaos, can Gene rise to Pompo’s challenge, and succeed as a first-time director? ‘Pompo the Cinephile’ is a rollicking, exuberant ode to the power of the movies, and the joys and heartbreak of the creative process, as a new director and his team devote their lives to the pursuit of a ‘masterpiece.'”
There has been no official announcement for the English voice cast or North American release date, though it is eyeing a 2022 premier. The Japanese cast includes Hiroya Shimizu, Konomi Kohara, Ai Kakuma, Akio Ōtsuka, and Ryūichi Kijima.

Mezco Goes Retro With Monsters and A Tower of Fear Deluxe Boxed Set
Mezco is producing a horror-themed playset that comes with five figures! Yes, for a change, those characters you see on the box are included! The Tower of Fear comes with Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster, Werewolf, and the Sea Creature.
The Tower stands at 18″ tall and features multiple levels and accessories for each monster. The playset has both an exterior face and interior detail. Right now, the images of the playset look like renders. Is it made out of plastic? Cardboard? I don’t know. We’ll find out when this thing launches between Q1 and Q2 of 2022.
While not precisely Universal’s versions of the monsters, Mezco has made each horror icon in ways that honor the long-standing tropes while also keeping them unique. Mezco’s 5 Points action figure line is, as you should have guessed, filled with toys that have five points of retro articulation.
Standing at a monstrous 18” once assembled, the retro play set diorama creates a decaying Carpathian castle with three floors – a dungeon, a main hall, and Frankenstein’s Lab! Each floor has interactive components for each Monster including a coffin that Dracula can fit inside, a sarcophagus that Mummy can fit inside, lab equipment that Frankenstein’s Monster can connect to, multiple landings for each figure to stand on, and much more!
The creatures come with the following accessories:
- One (1) vampire bat (fits over Dracula’s head)
- One (1) skullcap (fits onto Frankenstein’s Monster’s head)
- One (1) Usekh collar
- One (1) unraveled scroll
- Two (2) Canopic jars
- One (1) Uraeus
- One (1) fossilized Sea Creature head
- Two (2) seaweed fronds
- One (1) human skull
- One (1) tibia bone
- One (1) fibula bone
- Five (5) display bases
What are your thoughts on this playset? Should Mezco re-release some of their old monster figures from the early 2000s? Let us know in the comments section.

Bucky O’Hare Wave 2 Launches With A Lunch Box and Deadeye Duck!
Bucky O’Hare, the comic book and cartoon character who we all remember for a few brief moments in the early 1990s, will return as the second wave of his action figure line starts rolling out soon!
Kicking off Wave 2 will be a new version of Deadeye Duck. Corsair Canard Deadeye Duck, the four-armed fowl, comes with a Bucky-themed lunch box and several accessories. Deadeye Duck is priced at $42.99 and will arrive in November. He can be pre-ordered from Entertainment Earth.
The other entry in this wave is a holdover from the first. The Storm Toad Trooper looks to be identical to the one from Wave 1, but every hero needs an army of baddies to blow up. Like Deadeye, the Toad Trooper can be picked up via EE.
Deadeye comes with the following:
- 3x interchangeable beaks
- 8x interchangeable hands
- 4x laser pistols
- Lunchbox
The Toad Trooper has these accessories:
- 1x Toad Phlegm Laser Rifle
- 1x Bayonet
- 1x Laser Pistol
- 1x removable helmet
- 2x interchangeable heads
- 3x additional hands
- 1x cap
Bucky, Jenny, and the other intergalactic critters can still be picked up at EE since they’ll be restocked soon.
Do you remember Bucky O’Hare? What about the action figures from Hasbro? I remember them being available very briefly at Kay Bee Toys then vanishing. Check out Toy Galaxy’s video below for a whole rundown of what happened to the green rabbit.
Let us know your thoughts and memories in the comments section. Feel free to pick your boy up a few action figures for Christmas. You know you want to!

Raph’s Alive! NECA Has Combined The TMNT With Universal’s Monsters!
NECA is resurrecting a certain Ninja Turtle with an attitude problem. Somehow Raphael found himself on the dead side and has been jolted back to life by Dr. Frankenstein. Now, this living mutant abomination is on the loose!
Raphael as Frankenstein’s Monster stands at 7″ tall and comes with two lightning bolt sais as well as interchangeable hands. Unfortunately, the figure won’t arrive this Halloween but will be out by April 2022. Raphenstein can be pre-ordered via Entertainment Earth for $34.99.
The line will pay tribute to the world’s most famous turtles and Universal’s icons of horror. Inspired by the silver-screen classic Frankenstein, celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2021, Raphael as Frankenstein’s Monster reimagines the temperamental Turtle as the misunderstood monster. Includes metal chain, interchangeable hands, and two lightning bolt sai.
If Frankenstein’s monster was created from several dead people, what is Raphael constructed out of? My god! He’s made from his brothers, isn’t he?! Oh, the horror!
So, where can this line go next? The Creature would probably be a little too close to the Turtles’ original look. So, who else could they combine with? Maybe Donnie as the Invisible Man? That could make for an excellent combo of translucent parts and bandages.
Speaking of bandages, what about Mikey as the Mummy? He could have burial urns as nunchucks! Instead of a turtle shell, his back could be a winged Scarab beetle?
Now for Leo. Hmmm. The Wolf Man may be the right route, but what would his katanas be themed after? The cane, maybe? That’s a tough one since the creature isn’t really known for his accessories.
What are your thoughts of the Turtles crossing over with classic Universal Monsters? It feels like old times, right? Let us know what you think in the comments section.

You can watch the teaser below:
MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as:
“In a fantasy world in which a young girl with the Divine Protection of the hero battles against the demon lord. In that world, Red, the elder brother of that young girl hero, possessing the Divine Protection of “The Guide” which only grants a high initial level, fought in the initial party of the hero.
However, with a Divine Protection that only grants a high level but no magic nor martial art nor supernatural ability, he gradually could no longer keep up with the battle and in the end, a companion, a sage, remarked “You are not a true companion” as he snatched all his equipment and kicked him out of the party with just a single copper sword.
Having his heart completely shattered, Red distanced himself from the battle against the demon lord’s army despite knowing that the fate of the world rests on it, aiming to live an inconspicuous life alone at the frontier Zoltan as he earns money to open a herbalist shop by utilizing the knowledge he acquired throughout his journey.
Together with the half-elf carpenter living downtown and the princess who couldn’t become the hero’s companion, he aims to live a slow life in the frontier of the world governed by a person’s inborn Divine Protection!”
Sunrise Christens New Corporate Headquarters ‘White Base’
Sunrise Inc. is the Japanese animation studio responsible for several iconic anime, including Mobile Suit Gundam and its various spin-offs. Originally, the company had its operation based in over twenty locations, but recently they announced that Sunrise is consolidating their corporation into one building in Ogikubo in Japan. As a tribute to Gundam, they are naming their building “White Base.” The building will also feature decor Gundam and other anime properties they have produced.
The company also released some images of their new headquarters:
Sunrise is calling their new corporate headquarters "White Base." pic.twitter.com/mjaQ5S2uJk
— Jukt Micronics (@JuktMicronicsX) October 20, 2021
Crunchyroll reports, “The first Sunrise department will be moving in on October 25, with different departments, animation studios (including the different Sunrise ones, Namco Bandai Pictures, and Sunrise Beyond), and production houses trickling into the building between then and June 2022. Sunrise Beyond is set to be the last anime studio moving into White Base in January, while Sunrise Music is scheduled to move in sometime in June 2022.”
They continue, “White Base is situated only a short walk from Ogikubo Station, making it easier on all the Sunrise employees who will now be communicating to the building every day.”
According to the White Base Wikipedia page, the base “At the outbreak of the One Year War, the Dreadnought-oriented Earth Federation was caught completely by surprise when the Principality of Zeon deployed the agile mobile suits against their fleets. The Federation military quickly realized that they would also need mobile suits if they were to have any chance of victory, and instituted the famed Project V in order to develop a mass-production mobile suit design.”
Wikipedia adds, “The Federation also realized that their existing line of space warships — mostly the cannon-heavy Magellan-class battleships, Salamis-class cruisers, and the unarmed Columbus-class transporters — are severely lacking in mobile suit transport and support capacity, and thus desperately in need of designs capable of mobile warfare. A new revolutionary warship class exclusively designed for MS combat and support was born — the Pegasus-class assault carrier. One of the first Pegasus-class ships to enter active service was the White Base.”
Aside from Gundam, Sunrise has produced Cowboy Bebop, Space Runaway Ideon, Armored Trooper Votoms, Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, Future GPX Cyber Formula, Crush Gear Turbo, The Vision of Escaflowne, and several others.
Ninja Turtles’ Newest Crossover Toys Pit The Brothers Against Cobra Kai!
Sweep that green turtle leg, Johnny! The world of Netflix’s Cobra Kai clashes with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with these four new action figure sets!
Raphael will face off against John Kreese (very fitting). Donnie takes on Johnny while Leo faces Miguel Diaz. The odd one out is Mikey. Instead of competing against a member of the infamous dojo, he will be sparing with Daniel LaRusso. It may be an unfair fight since the Turtles come with their signature weapons. A crane kick is no match for a katana kid.
Each of the four packs comes with a Ninja Turtle and a member of either Cobra Kai or Daniel LaRusso. Produced by Playmates, each pack is priced at $49.99 and should hit retailers in early 2022. They can be pre-ordered now from The Big Bad Toy Store.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles join the tournament to take on the dojos from Netflix’s Cobra Kai in these brand new action figure 2-packs from Playmates!
Each set of fully articulated action figures comes packaged in a collector-friendly window box that features unique illustrations for each pair. Collect all four sets and see which dojo reigns supreme!
The Turtle brothers feature 34 points of articulation, while Daniel and the Cobra Kai clan each have 16. Each Turtle will have a weapon, but they will be painted black for some reason. Why any tournament would allow weapon-wielding mutants to fight unarmed humans is beyond me.
The other features include:
- 6 inches tall (15.24cm)
- Made of plastic (Oh, Boy!!!!)
- Based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Cobra Kai TV series (Ya think?)
- Window box packaging
Sorry, I had to insert my commentary because it was kind of apparent what these were and what they’re made out of.
What are your thoughts on this matchup? A bit out of nowhere? Should Splinter face off against Mr. Miyagi?
Child Endangerment The Board Game: Home Alone “Keep The Change”
Home Alone, the Christmas classic movie about a boy left alone … at home is getting a brand new board game from NECA. Home Alone: Keep the Change pits Kevin and Old Man Marley against the Wet Bandits Marv and Harry.
The game will be arriving just in time for the holidays. Keep an eye open at your local Target as this will be shipping out in November. You can also pre-order the game at The Big Bad Toy Store for $24.99.
One player is Kevin, who draws from a deck of loot and trap cards, and places them around the house. Other players are Marv and Harry, who move through the house, flipping over cards, trying to find Loot (like VCRs) and avoid Traps (like Slippery Stairs). One player can also be “Old Man” Marley, who can help Kevin fight off the Bandits!
The Bandits must collect enough loot and escape before Kevin’s mom gets home!
Of course, since Home Alone was a product of the early 1990s, this isn’t the film’s first board game. In 1991 the Home Alone board game from Kidz Biz had a similar premise to the NECA version.
To be honest, I kind of like the old game’s art style more. It has a somewhat Cracked or MAD Magazine feel to it.
What are your thoughts on this Home Alone board game? Let us know in the comments.
