Rosario Dawson Teams-Up With Puerto Rican Hero La Borinqueña In Upcoming Comic

0

Rosario Dawson has made a splash with comic book fans, appearing in the Netflix shows ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Luke Cage,’ and ‘The Defenders’ as the Night Nurse, a Marvel Studios character who helps the New York heroes. She is returning to comic books with the relaunch of Puerto Rican hero ‘La Borinqueña.’
La Borinqueña debuted in 2016 from writer Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and publishing company Somos Arte. The story follows a Columbia University student who runs into the Taíno mythological gods Atabex, Huracan, and Yucahu, according to Newsarama. Miranda-Rodriguez is returning to write this new adventure with artist Will Rosado to make this new story which will feature Dawson, a longtime fan of the character.
Dawson posted a lengthy Instagram post where she wrote in the description, “La Borinqueña Guest Starring: (myself!)”
The ‘Dopesick’ actress explained that the story “aims to spread awareness about the impacts of climate change and the importance of a clean energy transition in Puerto Rico.”
Newsarama reports, “Rita Fei has drawn the main cover to La Borinqueña starring Rosario Dawson, and she’ll be joined with variant covers from Bill Sienkiewicz, ChrisCross, Gus Vazquez, Leila Del Duca, Luciano Vecchio, and Rafael Albuquerque.”
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is supporting the comic book as a portion of the plot will be dedicated to raising awareness about free energy for Puerto Rico.
Dawson added, “NRDC expert Luis Martinez to discuss the newest addition to the #LaBorinqueña series- out on April 6th with 8 variant covers (including one by my Uncle [Gus Vazquez])…”
They also released an image of the main cover by Rita Fei:

‘La Borinqueña’ guest-starring Rosario Dawson will be available on April 6, 2022.
Dawson has appeared in several films Josie and the Pussycats (2001), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006), The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002), and Rent (2005) for which she won “Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture” at the 2006 Satellite Awards.

DC Comics Gives “First Look” At Tom King’s ‘Batman/Catwoman Special’

0

DC Comics Black Label dropped a bombshell with its “first look” at Tom King’s ‘Batman/Catwoman Special’ issue one which is set to reveal some of Selina Kyle’s lonely childhood. It also features a plethora of artists and writers adding their own spin. This includes the late comic book artist John Paul Leon, known for Marvel’s ‘Earth X,’ among numerous other titles.
“Batman and Catwoman have pretty much the definition of a complicated relationship,” DC Universe explains. “They’ve been adversaries, they’ve been allies, they’ve been engaged and now they’re…well, what are they exactly? That’s the real question at the heart of Tom King’s Batman/Catwoman, the out-of-continuity DC Black Label series that drops in on the costume-clad couple at various points throughout their relationship.”
They continue, “Batman/Catwoman is about to enter its final act, but before we get there, we have what King describes as a one-shot “interlude” in next week’s Batman/Catwoman Special #1, featuring a script by King and story art from Mitch Gerads, Bernard Chang, Shawn Crystal and, in the final work completed before his untimely death, John Paul Leon. Leon drew the first thirteen pages of the comic and provided the breakdowns for seven more before losing his longtime battle with cancer last year.”
They also released a glimpse at the cover:

Leon previously dipped his talent into Batman comics, having worked on such titles as Shadow of the Bat, Batman Incorporated Special, Detective Comics, and Batman: Creature of the Night, just to name a few.
DC Universe explains the story is “also a poignant meditation on loss and saying goodbye. But surprisingly, our first look at the special focuses on the other side of Selina’s relationship with Bruce—the first time she ever saw him, when she was a child at the orphanage established by his family. It’s a sweetly envisioned moment, giving us a glimpse at Selina at arguably her most vulnerable, and certainly the youngest we’ve seen her in quite a while.”
‘Batman/Catwoman Special #1’ is currently available digitally and in physical form at comic book shops.

‘BELLE’ English Actress Discusses Voicing Protagonist Suzu As Her First Feature Film Role

0

Movie director Mamoru Hosoda’s latest anime film ‘BELLE’ had a strong showing at the Japanese box office and made a splash when it was released in North America. After acquiring the license, GKIDs tapped voice directors Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh to make an English dub version starring Kylie McNeill as protagonist Suzu aka Belle, in her first starring role.
The young actress spoke with the Anime News Network about the role and what it was like debuting in her feature film.
” I got the casting audition from my agent and I auditioned in August,” she said describing how she got the role. “I just recorded it in my room on my laptop and sent it in. I think while they were casting me, my YouTube was used as a reference to hear more of me singing… I actually recorded the first audition in my bathroom. I was staying in Atlanta because my mom was working there, and I had a bathroom space that I made my little recording studio.”
McNeill continued, “I’ve been singing ever since I was super little. My parents raised me on Broadway cast albums. My abuelo was a flamenco singer. My mother sings. I went to a performing arts high school where I majored in musical theater. I think I started my YouTube channel two or three years ago. I haven’t posted too much.”
When asked if she saw a difference between Suzu and Belle, she shared her thoughts on the two as one character.
“Well for Suzu, I definitely tapped into my awkward teenage years, which I’m just barely escaping now,” she explained. “I really relate to her. I was super shy in high school. I barely spoke except when I was performing for class, which was required. For Belle, she has more of an air of confidence around her because she’s in her avatar and she feels more comfortable. I tried to play that up.”
‘BELLE’ is currently in theaters in both the Japanese and English audio formats.

The Villains Of ThunderCats Come Together In A Massive Diorama

0

Mumm-Ra and his hench … mutants (?) are coming together to form a massive diorama courtesy of Iron Studios.
Each of the six statues is 1/10th scale and is based on the original Rankin Bass cartoon that premiered in 1985. The show ran for four years and had 125 episodes. Each statue is made from polystone and is hand painted. These are scheduled for release during the third quarter of 2022.
Here’s the price breakdown for each baddie:

From the darkest corners of the planet called the Third World, Iron Studios proudly presents the ThunderCats\’ greatest archenemy, the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra, the Eternal Being, with his powerful muscles, on a base in the shape of an altar, referring to the interior of his Black Pyramid, amid the ruins of what appears to be an ancient civilization with Egyptian characteristics. In his primary form, the villain has the fragile appearance of an undead and mummified elder, but by invoking the power of his masters, four divine and evil entities known as the \”Ancient Spirits of Evil\”, the bands that cover his body are completely torn, and he changes his shape, making him, who previously had a decadent appearance, become the king of eternal life, a muscular, blue-gray giant with the appearance of an ancient pharaoh, with an adorned helmet and a symbol on his chest, in the form of two connected black snakes.
Having mystical powers linked to witchcraft and an apparently unlimited life span, Mumm-Ra in this form, has super strength, can cast spells, can also cast bundles of energy from his fingers, and can fly and change shape, but he also has a unique weakness: when he sees his ghastly reflection, his ability to remain outside his Black Pyramid is neutralized and this forces him to return to the Pyramid as a mummy. The villain\’s name is inspired by the words \”Mummia Raa\”, which means Mummy of Evil or Mummy Evil in Hebrew.

This isn’t anything new to the artists of Iron Studios. We previously covered their Mighty Morphin Power Rangers diorama. That thing was massive. This ThunderCats one looks to be no different. There was no artistic license taken here. Without a doubt, you can tell that these are the Rankin Bass designs. Maybe Silver Hawks will be next on the list?
In all honesty, I’d really love for Iron Studios to make a diorama based on the Rankin Bass version of The Hobbit. Gandalf, the dwarves, and Bilbo. I’d buy it, even if I had to get each character separately.

What do you think of Mumm-Ra and his gang? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Chicken Run’s Sequel Gets A Title, New Wallace & Gromit Heading to Netflix

0

A sequel to the 2000 stop-motion animated feature Chicken Run is going to Netflix. We learned today from Empire that the next installment of the escaping poultry now has an official title: Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget.
That title doesn’t feel as clever as what we typically see from Aardman, but maybe it will make more sense later after checking out the official synopsis:

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in!

I guess this means that chicken nuggets or processed poultry fast food products are becoming a thing, and the couple needs to save more chickens from certain death. OK, that makes sense. However, the original film’s setting was before fast food chains started to sprout up. So does this mean the film’s themes will move from The Great Escape to something more in line with James Bond films?
Big changes are coming as far as voice casting goes. Shazam‘s Zachary Levi will not voice the cannon-fired chicken, Rocky. Meanwhile, Westworld‘s Thandiwe Newton will be taking on the role of the brave and determined Ginger. According to Empire, Ginger’s original voice actor Julia Sawalha was saddened not to be returning. Apparently, she was not approached at all.
Mel Gibson had voiced Rocky in the first film from 2000. Since then, the Lethal Weapon star has had more than a couple of public scandals. While these did take place nearly two decades ago, it makes sense that Netflix would want to distance a kids’ film from the actor. However, there will be a very noticeable difference considering how recognizable Mel’s voice is compared to Zachary.
In other Aardman news, Wallace & Gromit will be heading to Netflix, too. Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham will direct the next adventure for the bumbling cheese-obsessed inventor and his clever canine. Unfortunately, details remain scarce aside from this official synopsis:

Gromit’s concern that Wallace has become over-dependant on his inventions proves justified, when Wallace invents a “smart gnome” that seems to develop a mind of its own… As events spiral out of control, it falls to Gromit to put aside his qualms and battle sinister forces – or Wallace may never be able to invent again!

AI on the loose? OK, I can see that being the premise for a classic W&G short. I’m not sure if it is enough material to make another feature-length film, though. On the other hand, I am eager to see more Ben Whitehead as Wallace. The character’s original voice actor, Peter Sallis, passed away, and Whitehead has been the go-to backup voice off and on for over a decade.
For decades now, Aardman has been the leading studio in stop-motion. Will working with Netflix degrade the house of Wallace & Gromit? That’s a personal concern of mine. What do you think of Netflix being the new home for Aardman’s creations? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hot Taarna Is Back With This Classic ‘Heavy Metal’ Statue

Ah, I see you’re enticed by Taarna’s rocking … pose. Me, too! Heavy Metal knew how to exemplify the awesomeness of warrior women.
Most of us were introduced to Taarna during the movie’s finale based on the long-running sci-fi/fantasy magazine Heavy Metal. She is represented here in a bit more detail than her animated counterpart, but no less sexy. Taarna looks like she is ready to take on the Loc-Nar born mutants and kick some serious butt.
The statue stands at 12″ tall and is priced at $250. It can be pre-ordered now over at Sideshow Collectibles. Taarna and her faithful Avis are scheduled to ship out between July and September 2022.

The Statue of Wyld Stallyns’ Bass Player Doesn’t Fear The Reaper

0

“You may be a king or a little street sweeper, but sooner or later, you dance with the reaper!”
Standing at 12″ tall, this 1/10″ scale replica of the Grim Reaper is ready to either usher Bill and Ted into the underworld or rock out with the Wyld Stallyns! Yes, Death features multiple interchangeable parts to match either his appearance just after the untimely demise of the Wyld Stallyns or when he joins them during the world-changing Battle of the Bands.
The statue of Death is limited to only 1,000 pieces and is priced at $200. He can be pre-ordered now over at Sideshow Collectibles and is slated for a fourth-quarter release this year. Incendium LLC designed the statue.

It may be a little nitpicky, but that doesn’t look like William Sadler. Maybe the finished product will be a bit better. However, I think the white they put in the PVC is washing out the details. If he were painted white to match the on-screen look, the Grim Reaper would look a bit more like a rock star.

Bill and Ted are totally dead! But that’s ok, at least they have Death to keep them company! This musically inclined and delightfully detailed 1:10 scale PVC statue features swappable appendages and accessories to recreate iconic moments from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. Lay down the groove with his rad stand-up bass or get down to business with his Scythe. Sooner or later, you’ll dance with the Reaper…
The statue stands approximately 12-inches including the base and is limited to 1000 pieces. Get your order in before they’re gone!

What do you think of this statue of the Grim Reaper? Should Incendium LLC create one for Station and robot Bill & Ted? Let us know in the comments section below.

Interview: X-MEN’s Cyclops Series Coming From Filmmaker Keith Sutliff

0

Fellow Tampa native/filmmaker/actor Keith Sutliff joined us today to talk about his upcoming series The Cyclops Chronicles: The Story of Scott Summers. The series focuses on the longtime X-MEN leader, Scott Summers, whose eyes emit powerful concussive blasts of energy. While Scott’s mutant ability sounds cool, it also means that he has to keep his eyes hidden under the lenses of ruby-quartz.
This fan project will follow the origins of the legendary mutant as he cruises around in a sweet Delorean. The first episode of The Cyclops Chronicles will arrive within the next couple of months. Until then, let’s get to know the how and why of this series by chatting with Mr. Sutliff himself.
Check out our interview below. Also, be sure to check out KS Pictures LLC for more information on his upcoming and past projects.

Playmates Revival Of The ‘Star Trek’ Toyline Has Officially Been Revealed!

Playmates Toys is once again in control of the Star Trek license! Years after the company produced its last batch of figures based on nearly every Federation captain and ancillary character; things are going back to business as usual.
StarTrek.com announced the first batch of figures, roleplaying items, and vehicles for the relaunched toyline. Much like the old days, the high points and low points of Star Trek will be included.

Playmates
Khan Noonien Singh, Admiral James T. Kirk, and Captain Spock, as they appeared in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, will be the first versions of the Original Series characters to join the toyline.
Playmates
Bearded Commander Riker, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and Luetenant Data are the first trio from the Next Generation. Next, the crew of the Enterprise D will arrive donning their Third Season uniforms.
Playmates
A Playmates line wouldn’t be complete without some roleplaying items. The original toyline gave us everything from phasers to medical tricorders. The relaunch is going straight for the original series’s phaser. The Starfleet weapon will have lights and sounds, but it is not clear if this replica is modular.
Playmates
Ah, the Enterprise NCC-1701! No refit, just the classic gray ship that boldly went where no one had gone before. This vehicle is stated to be 18″ scale, so I guess they mean 18″ from front to back. Lights, sounds, and quotes from TOS are listed as the play features.
Playmates
Well, I can’t avoid it. Playmates will also be making two characters from STD: Commander Saru and Michael “Crying Game” Burnham. Star Trek Discovery is what an “edgy” parody of what Star Trek would be like if Michael Bay directed the franchise. Odd that only two characters have made the cut so far. This could be because the amount of plastic needed to make Tilly would strain the production costs.
What do you think of the revival of Playmates’ long-running Star Trek action figure line? Are the changes to the classic body styles a good thing, or would you prefer them more blocky? Let us know in the comments section below.
