Rosario Dawson has made a splash with comic book fans, appearing in the Netflix shows ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Luke Cage,’ and ‘The Defenders’ as the Night Nurse, a Marvel Studios character who helps the New York heroes. She is returning to comic books with the relaunch of Puerto Rican hero ‘La Borinqueña.’
La Borinqueña debuted in 2016 from writer Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and publishing company Somos Arte. The story follows a Columbia University student who runs into the Taíno mythological gods Atabex, Huracan, and Yucahu, according to Newsarama. Miranda-Rodriguez is returning to write this new adventure with artist Will Rosado to make this new story which will feature Dawson, a longtime fan of the character.
Dawson posted a lengthy Instagram post where she wrote in the description, “La Borinqueña Guest Starring: (myself!)”
The ‘Dopesick’ actress explained that the story “aims to spread awareness about the impacts of climate change and the importance of a clean energy transition in Puerto Rico.”
Newsarama reports, “Rita Fei has drawn the main cover to La Borinqueña starring Rosario Dawson, and she’ll be joined with variant covers from Bill Sienkiewicz, ChrisCross, Gus Vazquez, Leila Del Duca, Luciano Vecchio, and Rafael Albuquerque.”
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is supporting the comic book as a portion of the plot will be dedicated to raising awareness about free energy for Puerto Rico.
Dawson added, “NRDC expert Luis Martinez to discuss the newest addition to the #LaBorinqueña series- out on April 6th with 8 variant covers (including one by my Uncle [Gus Vazquez])…”
