Sentai Announces September 2022 Anime Releases

Sentai Filmworks announced a slew of anime that they are planning to distribute on DVD and streaming. They will include television shows and films, both brand-new and some continuations. A few of them will have English dubs and others will feature the original Japanese audio with English subtitles.

Their website reveals that the dub include include:

Magical Warfare

“When Nanase Takeshi, a regular high school student, encounters Aiba Miu, a girl from a world of destruction, he winds up getting involved in a grand battle between mages. In order to save Miu, in order to save the world, and in order to change destiny. A real, modern-day magical action story begins now,” reports Anime News Network.

“500 years before Saiyuki, a heretic child with golden eyes is brought to Heaven and given into the reluctant care of a minor deity, Konzen, nephew of the Merciful Goddess, Kanzeon Bosatsu. Konzen eventually names him ‘Goku.’ Goku befriends two other minor gods, Marshal Tenpou and General Kenren of the Western Army of Heaven, and a boy who seems to be his age, the War Prince Nataku. Though Goku is happy in his new home, Heaven is not kind to heretics,” says TMDB.

“The cast is back and ready to quip! In this companion film that follows season 2 of the zany, irreverent Seitokai Yakuindomo anime series, the student council must again grapple with a mix of double-entendres and doubly potent teen hormones,” reports AniList.

Gunbuster: The Movie

“Noriko Takaya’s dream is to become a space pilot like her father, who died when she was young after an attack by alien forces in deep space. After entering Okinawa Girls Space Pilot High School, she must persuade everyone, especially herself, that she can fulfill her goal and become an accomplished pilot despite being just an ordinary girl,” Letterboxd said.

All of the releases are being handled cooperatively with Section23 Films.

Shout Factory announced that they are distributing the European film ‘Kingslayer,’ a medieval film that dramatizes the early life of English King Richard the Lionheart. Shout will stream it on several platforms and will also give it a home video release on DVD.

“ A nation stands on the brink of chaos, England’s crown lies ready for the taking. One man must make a choice between love and destiny before a kingdom falls. From BAFTA Award winner Stuart Brennan (Risen) and Golden Globe-winning producer Gareth Wiley (Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) comes an enthralling action epic based on true historical events when KINGSLAYER unleashes on digital, VOD, Blu-ray™, and DVD for watch-at-home on October 18, 2022 from Shout! Studios in collaboration with Kaleidoscope. Written and directed by Brennan and produced by Wiley and Brennan, KINGSLAYER boasts an impressive cast of Brennan, Carolina Carlsson (The Young Pope), Ryan Gage (The Hobbit films), David Hayman (Macbeth), newcomer Ellie-Rose Mackinlay, and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings films),” Shout said on their website.

A ‘Killer Klowns From Outer Space’ Game Was Just Announced!

It’s a good year for horror fans! A few months ago, a fantastic multi-player Evil Dead game hit the scene, and now the Killer Klowns From Outer Space are joining in on the PVP fun! So team up with your friends and get ready to ravage a town or get stuffed inside cotton candy cocoons!

  • Take on a role of the iconic Killer Klowns – cooperate in a team of three players, utilize outlandish abilities, hunt humans with zany weapons, and plan your own alien invasion to successfully harvest the population of Crescent Cove.
  • Fight back as a team of seven brave citizens of Crescent Cove – pick your class, explore the city for valuable loot and weapons, avoid getting captured by Klowns, and try to survive – or sabotage – the alien invasion.

Depending on your role, you’ll either be hunting or hunted. If you’re a clever enough human, you’ll be able to take on the invaders. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game may sound familiar in terms of gameplay, and that’s because it comes from Randy Greenback, the guy behind 2017’s Friday the 13th: The Game. While it was a little rough around the edges, it was a fantastic experience with a group of friends.

Our friend, composer John Massari, confirmed on Twitter that he had a hand in the new game’s score. Mr. Massari wrote the original film’s soundtrack, headlined by an awesome song by The Dickies. When I spoke with John earlier, he confirmed that he had been working on the music for this game for half a year!

If you want to sign up for the beta, head on over to the game’s official website. The game is expected to launch, possibly in Q1 of 2023. Expect a bunch of post-launch support like DLC, probably in the form of costumes and other customizable things. Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game will land on Steam, PS5/PS4, XBOX Series X|S, and XBOX One. No word on a Nintendo Switch version yet, but if Friday The 13th made its way to the handheld console, this probably will, too.

Tubi Announced ‘Breaking Bears’ Adult Animated Comedy

Tubi is making further moves into the adult animation space with the announcement that they had greenlit the series ‘Breaking Bears’ for their ad-based streaming service. Cartel Entertainment developed the series which was created by Julien Nitzberg (‘The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia’) and Tom DeLonge’s To The Stars Media (‘Monsters of California,’ ‘Unidentified’). Describing the show as ‘Yoga Bear’ meets ‘The Sopranos,’ it will parody and satirize other crime family films and TV shows.

“BREAKING BEAR follows the escapades of three bear siblings who decide they have to start selling drugs in order to raise money and save their home after gas companies start fracking next to their cave. The bears soon enlist other forest animals in a scheme that will pit them against oil companies, The Russian Mafia, local Hell’s Angels and polar bears who hate anything that isn’t white,” Tubi says on their website.

They also released a “first look” at the main character designs:

Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson expressed his excitement for the project, saying, “When The Cartel pitched a series with cartoon animals as mobsters, I knew it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

He continued, “This is the perfect project to expand our adult animation offering after the stellar success of THE FREAK BROTHERS, cementing Tubi as a destination for adult humor.”

Stan Spry (‘Creepshow,’ ‘Day of the Dead’), Jeff Holland (‘Creepshow,’ ‘Day of the Dead’), Bradford Bricken (‘Twelve Forever’), and Eric Woods (‘Creepshow,’ ‘Harland Manor’) join DeLong and Nitzberg as executive producers for ‘Breaking Bears.’

This is the second original adult comedy from Tubi following ‘The Freak Brothers‘ which was renewed for a second season. The show is based on a 1968 comic strip in the pages of the underground newspaper ‘The Rag’ published in Austin, Texas. They would later appear in ‘Feds ‘n’ Heads,’ ‘Playboy,’ ‘High Times,’ and ‘Rip Off Comix.’ There would be a number of compilations including ‘The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus’ which was released in 2008 by Knockabout Comics.

‘The Batman’ Director Matt Reeves Receives Multi-Year First Look Deal At Warner Media

After slashing ‘Batgirl,’ one version of the Dark Knight is moving forward at Warner Bros. Discovery. The entertainment company is doubling down on ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves by offering him a multi-year “first look” deal for both film and television. The director’s 6th & Idaho production company will be developing new projects for the Hollywood studio.

The deal includes a sequel to ‘The Batman’ which will see ‘The Lighthouse’ actor Robert Pattinson return to the role of Bruce Wayne as well as ‘The Penguin’ spin-off show starring ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ star Colin Farrell as the titular villain.

“Making this legendary studio my home is a dream,” Reeves told Deadline in a statement. “I am so excited to be working with Mike, Pam, and Channing and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen.”

Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-Chair/CEO Michael De Luca added, “(Warner Co-CEO Pamela Abdy) and I gratefully inherited the relationship with Matt from The Batman, and through the beginning stages of planning ‘The Penguin’ series for HBO Max.”

“We were excited to nail down his overall deal because it’s a cornerstone of what we want to do with the filmmakers that are working at the studio. We want to create an atmosphere where all of these filmmakers can excel and do their work and stay with us once they are inside the Warners family. Keeping Matt and creating a home for him to do more projects in the Batman universe but also originals, was very important to us,” he continued.

Apart from the approved projects, it is possible that the much-discussed ‘Arkham’ series will move forward. Originally announced as a Gotham City PD show, it has since evolved into one about the troubled mental health facility that houses Batman villains like the Joker and the Riddler.

“We’re making an investment for whatever Matt feels a pull toward, in the Batman universe and otherwise. He has an open invitation to go wherever his interests take him. We’ll lean into whatever Matt wants to do,” De Luca said.

Marvel Comics has announced their new pull list for late August which features all of the heavy-hitters. The Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and so many more are going to get new releases including online, individual issues, and graphic novels. We will also see some fan-favorite minor characters such as Eternals and Damage Control, which is getting a new title.

“In this week’s Marvel comics, the creator of The Goldbergs will bring Damage Control back into the spotlight,” Marvel Universe said. “After the mega-powered battles and Hulk-level catastrophes, Damage Control is always there to clean up the mess and get things back to normal…but Damage Control is much more than just a glorified cleanup crew. ‘My Isekai Life’ Tames An English Dub

‘My Isekai Life’ is a fantasy isekai light novel series written by Shinkoshoto, illustrated by Huuka Kazabana, and published by SB Creative starting in 2018. That same year, Square Enix started producing a manga illustrated by Ponjea. In 2022, the Japanese animation studio Revoroot released an anime adaption that streamed to HiDive. The streaming service announced that they and Sentai Filmworks had licensed an English dub to be released in August 2022.

New SEGA Movies Coming: Space Channel Five & Comix Zone!

After the successful debut of the reworked Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020, I had a feeling that SEGA was going to push for more of its classic franchises to become feature-length films. However, I wasn’t expecting the next two announced to be Dreamcast’s Space Channel Five and Comix Zone from the Genesis (MegaDrive). That’s the official word, according to The Escapist.

Space Channel Five started as a music game in ’99/’00, and its protagonist, the news reporter Ulala, became one of the Dreamcast’s most familiar faces during its short lifetime. Since it launched, the title has seen various sequels, including a VR game in 2020. It was a cool sci-fi game that used the fashion styles of the psychedelic 1960s as inspiration, but how will it translate into a movie? It’s up to Nir Paniry and Batty Battles to figure that out, as the duo has been tapped to pen the comedy. It is interesting to note that the film will not center around Ulala, instead “a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to save the world from aliens using the one thing that unites all people on the planet: our love of silly viral dances.”

Comix Zone was one of the last Genesis games I bought before trading all my game systems for a PC in the mid-1990s. It was a unique beat’em up title where you played the role of comic book artist Sketch Turner. This guy gets pulled into his own comic and must fight through panel after panel to save the fictional post-apocalyptic New York. This game could make for one visually impressive, if not FX-heavy, film. Thankfully, Young Justice‘s Mae Catt has been tasked with writing the script for this adaptation. However, I can already see the Twitter feed when they see the outline of the new plot, which “follows a jaded comic book creator and a young, queer writer of color who, when sucked into the final issue of his popular series, must put aside their differences to stop a dangerous supervillain from sowing complete destruction — and in the process wittily explore the ever-evolving power of storytelling itself.”

 

SEGA will work with Erik Feig’s Picturestart to bring these two new films to life. This production company is also working on the upcoming Naruto and Borderlands adaptations. Erik and Picturestart’s Royce Reeves-Darby will oversee the SEGA projects. In addition, Sega Vice President Co-COO Shuji Utsumi will join them to ensure quality. Other SEGA alumni to join these two productions will be Toru Nakahara (producing both films), Takumi Yoshinaga (Space Channel Five), and Kagasei Shimomura (Comix Zone).

Eri Kasamoto Rounds Out Metal Slug 3’s Action Figure Set

Hot on the heels of the recently announced 1/12 scale Fio figure, Eri Kasamoto has just been announced. We spotted her over at the Big Bad Toy Store with a price tag of $139.99. She’s expected to ship during the second quarter of 2023. Something that caught my eye is that it looks like she’s using the same body as Fio. I am not complaining!

Eri’s shorts, shirt, vest, socks, and kneepads are made of fabric. She’ll stand about 5.9″ tall and has a wide range as far as articulation goes. I hope Tunshi Studio makes a version of the rebel soldier with the screaming face so that I can pose him next to Eri as she blasts off her shotgun.

Now, where is a 1/12 scale version of the original SV-001 Metal Slug?
