Discotek Media To Release ‘Urusei Yatsura Always My Darling’ On Blu-Ray

0

Coming to a Blu-ray release, ‘Urusei Yatsura Always My Darling’ the sixth and final film from the anime. Directed by Katsuhisa Yamada, the movie was first released to Japanese theaters in 1991 and would be made available to international audiences later. Now Discotek Media is releasing it on home video, featuring both the original Japanese cast and the English dubbed version.

The original teaser is available as a special feature.

You can watch the 10th-anniversary trailer below:

The movie was produced by Kitty Films and animated by Madhouse with Mitsuru Kotaki composing the music. It would be the last film in the original franchise until a 2012 OVA. It was distributed by Argo Project instead of Toho, which had released the previous entries.

Right Stuf Anime describes the synopsis as follows,

“You thought The Final Chapter was the last Urusei Yatsura movie? Nope, sorry! This time around there’s a girl named Lupica – there’s always a girl with an outlandish name in these movies – and she’s out to kidnap the most lecherous person in the universe! That’s Ataru Moroboshi, of course, and for some insanely contrived reasons he’s the only person alive who is able to snatch a mystical love potion. A love potion Lupica wants to win the heart of a mild-mannered intergalactic tofu deliveryman. She could just ask him out, but she’s too scared to, so instead decides brainwashing is the way to go. Things don’t go to plan, of course, and the love potion ends up being used on Ataru instead! He starts to go crazy and also bark like a dog for some reason, but that’s okay, because he was already a dog to begin with. Lum tries to save him despite this, the citizens of Tomobiki get really mad about the chaos, and it’s all a big mess, really.”

The set is available for pre-order on Right Stuf Anime.

Marlon Wayans Says Comedies Like ‘White Chicks’ Are “Needed”

In this age of hypersensitivity from certain sectors on the internet, Hollywood studios have changed on they handle certain genres. That includes comedies. In the media, it is popular to pick an old feature film or television show and nitpick it, searching for something to criticize about it. There is some pushback on this from some creators.

Actor and writer Marlon Wayans was being interviewed by BuzzFeed and when asked if his past works, specifically ‘White Chicks,’ could be made today with a “stricter form of censorship.”

“I think they’re needed,” the ‘Scary Movie’ star said. “I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled. If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor.”

Wayans discussed the aversions to certain types of comedy and declares he “ain’t listening” to voices saying he should self-censor.

“It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore,” he continued. “I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-ass people, these scared executives. Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself.”

He added, “I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”

‘White Chicks’ is a 2004 comedy film where Marlon and Shawn Wayans play FBI Agents disguised as two caucasian women who have to infiltrate a fashion event. While the movie was critically panned, it was a small hit at the box office. It was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans.

Batman and the Bat-Family are definitely at the forefront on both individual issues and collected editions.

Damien Wayne As Robin Is Mezco’s Next One:12 Figure

If your ex came up to you and said she lied about having a miscarriage and then presented you with a trained killer as your son, what would you do? Of course, if you’re Batman, you just sort of roll with it, I guess. Thus why we’ve been dealing with Damian Wayne since 2006. Regardless of his popularity, the child of the Bat and Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter has earned his place amongst all those wearing Robin’s cowl.

After several Batman figures, we’re finally moving on to Damien in Mezco’s One:12 Collective series. While I may not be a fan of the character, I do like his Robin outfit. It looks less flamboyant than the Dick Grayson version and improves on some of the things we saw evolve over the years with Tim Drake’s costume. Damien is due out around next Summer.

Damien is priced in the typical range for One:12 figures, $95, but he is not all that impressive regarding the extras. Damien isn’t exactly accessory-heavy, but he comes with enough to give him some decent display options:

  • Three (3) head portraits
  • Eleven (11) interchangeable hands
    • One (1) pair of fists (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of bow holding hands (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of katana/bo staff holding hands (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of birdarang holding hands (L&R)
    • One (1) pair of posing hands (L&R)
    • One (1) relaxed hand (L)
  • Hooded, serrated cape with integrated posing wire
  • Face mask (removable)
  • Armored tunic with ‘R’ insignia
  • Fitted bodysuit
  • Wrist gauntlets
  • SAP gloves
  • Utility belt (removable)
  • Boots
  • One (1) bo staff
  • One (1) katana
  • One (1) bow
  • Three (3) arrows
  • Three (3) small birdarangs
  • Two (2) medium birdarangs
  • One (1) large birdarang
  • One (1) birdarang throwing FX
  • One (1) grapple gun wrist mount with open hook & integrated posing wire (attaches to wrist)
  • One (1) One:12 Collective display base with logo
  • One (1) One:12 Collective adjustable display post

I never really got into the whole Damien Wayne bit of Batman lore. At first, I thought it would be a short-lived fluke like so many other “kid” characters, but he has stuck around for years. Is he popular? What do you think of the young spawn of Bruce and Talia? Let us know in the comments section below.

Former Classic G4TV Technical Director Comments on New G4TV Closing – Our Past Needed To Be Fixed?

In the wake of the relaunched G4TV network shutting down in under a year, many have taken to social media to express their views on how Comcast handled resurrecting the doomed brand. While everyone felt empathy for those who lost their jobs, others debated on who or what was to blame for the network failing a second time. Some of the former new G4TV hosts and personalities shared their thoughts online after the cancellation, but other thoughts from former classic G4TV posted and shared their views on everything leading up to how it all went down.

Chris Flynn is a former G4TV technical director who worked at the network from 2006 to 2012, up to when the network was canceled. He oversaw many of the technical elements of the shows being aired at the time, including effects and camera shots for Attack of the Show and more. Chris also worked for various productions at different studios in Hollywood, before and after the original G4TV was live on air. Like many alumni from the original version of the network, Chris had many opinions and thoughts to share about the new G4TV shutting down, including insight into the information he learned as things went south.

“I felt they came back with a hollowed-out version of Attack of the Show… I had advanced knowledge through inside sources six weeks ahead of time what they were doing and what the plan was… ” Sitting down for an interview with YouTube channel VGx7, Chris details that his source, who was rehired by G4TV, informed him that the ones in charge of the network had no intention of bringing back the older shows that were popular from classic G4TV. Everything was going to focus on what was new, including a big connection to eSports. He also goes on to note towards the later part of the interview that the campaign #G4NeedsTalent was also a complete mess, where most of the talent added to the network was already decided well in advance.

According to Chris’ sources, the network was very scattered and didn’t even figure out or have a crew as close to around 2 weeks prior to the relaunch. Many people didn’t know how to approach making things work. Stories coming out of the network were very bad according to what Chris was being told by his sources. Some executives on shows and other people running wild and not doing much for nearly the whole timeframe of G4TV’s Summer Beach House.

“You had people who were supposedly running things and building the company, and yet when the director would come in they would be like ‘thank god you’re here’… This was the people who were the showrunners…” Things got crazy enough that conflict between staff caused a lot of tension, with the shock of working on a real production schedule and trying to maintain order within the production caused some people to leave.

One of the big issues Chris notes from new content produced for new G4TV was the rotation of the hosts and lackluster gags. Instead of having personalities tied to specific shows, newer content would cycle the pool of talent and underutilize them. Some of the hosts would linger in the background during segments looking bored, rather than allowing them to connect with the audience on the shows they were featured. “Typical TV would have two dedicated hosts… instead of having everyone else twiddling their thumbs on the bench, they would be a role player on the bench… Everyone has a role to play…”

In the interview, Chris also goes on to discuss the differences in the talent between some of the newer hosts and the older hosts. He notes many things that worked for new hosts coming from Twitch backgrounds didn’t work for the audience watching, where the same kinds of gags would be rinsed and repeated when they didn’t always work. “One day Goldenboy is on Boosted, the next he’s just sitting on a couch… they clearly felt like they were under-utilized, the whole thing was a disaster… These people are just going to be sitting on a couch?”

Speaking on the layoffs, Chris expressed sympathy for those getting laid off most recently, with some people not even receiving severance pay after the new G4TV shutdown. “The first group that got laid off got 4 to 6 months’ severance… apparently this last group didn’t get any severance… And some were trying to figure out how to get their personal belongings back because they couldn’t get back into the studio…”

One of the more interesting bits to come from the interview was Chris’ thoughts on how things transpired with controversial host Indiana “Froskurin” Black and her speech to the audience. “I understand you’re all going to do whatever you want, you are new G4 and I respect…just don’t screw with our legacy. Once you had Frosk telling everyone to go to hell… now you’re messing with our legacy. You’re taking all that love and nostalgia that people had for us, and they were now questioning it…”

Chris went on to talk about some of the backlash and fallout from Indiana Black’s posts on Twitter, including the now infamous tweet right after the first batch of layoffs. “This is a person who needs to go away from social media, needs to stop talking in public… Just stop… She said ‘our mandate was to fix the past’… Hold on a second, our past needed to be fixed? … We lasted 12 years, launched the careers of Olivia Munn and Chris Hardwick… You all crashed and burned in 11 months, and Frosk says she’s leaving the business… How can you say we needed to be fixed?”

The rest of the interview with Chris goes on to discuss other aspects of how the older version of G4TV was made, including parts of the production that were vastly different from the new G4TV. For fans of the network who were eager to watch and disappointed with how it all turned out, the interview is a fascinating discussion about the past and present of G4TV. You can find and watch the full interview here. Post in the comments below your thoughts about what happened to the new G4TV and what you think about the interview with Chris Flynn!

HiDive Nabs ‘Lupin Zero’ Anime For Streaming

0

Anime fans will get to see the an early story for gentleman thief Lupin III in the upcoming prequel show ‘Lupin Zero’ from TMS Entertainment. Set for a December 2022 release, HiDive has announced that they will stream the animated series to a North American audience.

“HIDIVE, home of the LUPIN THE 3RD anime series, has acquired exclusive rights to the new spin-off series LUPIN ZERO,” they said online. “Set in the 1960s during Japan’s Showa Era, this original anime story centers on a teenaged Lupin III and delves into his untold origins as the world’s greatest thief. LUPIN ZERO will run for six episodes and debuts on Sunday, December 16 on HIDIVE.”

The anime will be directed by Daisuke Sakou, character designs are being handled by Asami Taguchi, and Ichirou Okouchi acts as series supervisor.

HiDive President and General Manager John Ledford celebrated the acquisition, saying, “We’re thrilled to launch the new original anime LUPIN ZERO this December as an exclusive series only available on HIDIVE, home of the LUPIN THE 3RD anime series.”

“Lupin III has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years and this fan-favorite character is returning with all new mysteries – but this time as a teenager in junior high in 1960’s Tokyo. This new action series will not disappoint,” he added.

A trailer was released to promote the series:

In a press release obtained by Lupin Central, the show is described as follows,

“The LUPIN ZERO anime features a young, nameless, Lupin III running around the streets of 1960s Japan during the economic boom — the era simultaneous to Monkey Punch’s release of the manga.

How did this young boy become notorious gentleman thief “Lupin III”?

Since the initial serialization of Monkey Punch’s globally renowned “LUPIN THE 3rd” manga in 1967, Lupin III has taken the world by storm and has appeared in various media. However, despite his long-standing status and notoriety as the world’s greatest thief, there was once a time when even Lupin III, was young and inexperienced.

Loosely based on Young Lupin III from the original manga, LUPIN ZERO will tell a nostalgic, yet brand new original story, finally lifting the veil cast upon Lupin III’s humble beginnings. Set during the era in which the original series was first published, the anime depicts Young Lupin III running around the streets of 1960s Japan during the country’s economic boom.”

‘Lupin the 3rd’ is based on manga series written and illustrated by Monkey Punch whose original run began in 1967 and concluded in 1981. It would continue on under other writers and receive numerous anime content including TV shows and feature films.

In this practical, students must demonstrate that they have the necessary skillset to live with a partner of the opposite sex while presenting a certain level of harmony to the video surveillance that grades them.

Unfortunately, random chance put his slightly subdued self into the practical with the person polar opposite to him, the gyaru Akari Watanabe. Akari on the other hand hoped to be paired with her crush Minami Tenjin.

Their hopes are doubly dashed when they find out that Shiori and Minami are assigned together. Thus, they reluctantly decide to cooperate to reach the top ten, which would give them the right to exchange partners if both couples agree. To that end, Jirou steals Akari’s first kiss without realizing what he’d done, while giving a hurried good-bye kiss…”

The television show is directed by Takao Kato and Junichi Yamamoto with Chizuru Kobayashi designing the characters.

Sentai Announces DVD Releases For November 2022

Sentai Filmworks has announced its Blu-Ray DVDs release slate. The production company says that will release over eight titles for home video with some being English dubbed and others subtitled with the original Japanese audio.

Sentai Filmworks announced the releases on their website:

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei Herz

“Magical girls don’t get time off, so even though Illya and Miyu have just saved the world (see FATE/KALEID LINER PRISMA ILLYA,) it’s now their job to clean up the resulting mess! Unfortunately, there’s no established system for disposing of hazardous magical materials and sealing the Class Cards has caused some serious side effects… one of which is that Illya now has a duplicate doppelganger who is being a very bad girl! Can Illya get “herself” under control in a conflict of split personalities? And even once she’s comfortable with her dark self, is it wise to take her on a trip to the beach while preparing for her next mission? Not unless you’re ready for the demons, alternate dimensions, and all the other Magical Girl stuff that ensues…”

Kinmoza!

“Speaking another language is wonderful, but simply knowing the words doesn’t mean that you always understand everything they mean. That’s a lesson that Shinobu Omiya started to learn when she studied as an exchange student in England. Now that her host family’s daughter is coming to study in Japan, Shinobu is right to worry about whether Alice will fit in well with her Japanese friends Yoko and Aya. As it turns out, though, that’s the least of Shinobu’s problems, as the arrival of an old rival, who’s half-English and half-Japanese, throws everything into chaos! With Karen and Alice both making landfall at the same time, will the relationships that were shared in another language continue?”

Kinmoza: Pretty Days

One of the best parts about being in a group of friends is that you usually have a couple of guardian angels watching over you. So, when Shinobu has to both write a script as well as make costumes for a play for the school festival, it doesn’t take long for her classmates to realize that someone might have bitten off more than she can chew. Or write and sew, in this case. Fortunately for Shinobu’s theatrical future, Alice, Yoko, and Aya are glad to pitch in, and that allows for a chance to reflect on their experiences in the days before Alice arrived. Will everything be finished in time, or will the audience be in stitches because of the ones coming apart onstage?

Konmoza: The Movie

“Time flies when you’re having fun, and it seems like only yesterday that Shinobu Omiya was nervously waiting for her friend Alice Cartelet to arrive from England to study at Shinobu’s school in Japan. Now, in their third and final year, Alice, Shinobu, Aya, and Yoko have truly become the best of friends and even Karen, Honoka, and Kana are part of the gang as well. But since it’s their last year, that means their time will be split between preparing for the big senior trip to Nara and Kyoto, and trying to make plans for whatever is to come next in their lives… and in Shinobu’s case, that may mean something so amazing that she’d never even dared to dream it!”

Sakura Trick

“After sitting next to each other all through junior high, Haruka and Yuu were really upset to find that the seating plan in high school had them on opposite sides of the class! So, to show that they were still the very best of friends, they decided it would be cute to kiss. It had seemed so cute and innocent… until, maybe, it wasn’t. Because suddenly everything they thought they knew about their feelings for each other felt… different. But since they’ve kissed once, what’s the harm in doing it again? And learning that some of their classmates are similarly occupied only increases the inclination! Are they still just girls who are friends, or are they becoming girlfriends? They really don’t know. Not yet.”

Princess Principal Crown Handler Movie 2

“The problem with assassinations is that bullets are cheap, fanatics are fanatical, and even when an attempt fails, there’s always a chance for follow-ups. So even if the attack on Prince Richard by a supposed foreign sniper fails to put his royal highness six feet under, it soon becomes clear that it’s open hunting season for Royals when assassins strike again. Now Team White Pigeon’s priorities must be split between locating the deadly Cavorite bombs smuggled into the country and protecting Princess Charlotte’s sister Mary, the next in line… which, given that Charlotte herself is also a target and currently posing as White Pigeon’s Ange, only redoubles the peril she’s already found herself in!”

Listen To Me, Girls. I Am Your Father!

“Yuta Segawa’s sister raised him by herself, so when Yuri and her husband go missing, how can Yuta not take in their three daughters? Unfortunately, just because they’re family doesn’t mean that things will go easy, and there’s the question of how the girl Yuta likes, Raika, will react to his unplanned triple paternity. Even more troubling, however, is the fact that only the youngest, Hina, is Yuri’s by birth, while the stepdaughters, 14-year-old Sora and 10-year-old Miu, are both hitting phases where boys are on their radar. Of course, when you’re a dad and you’ve got daughters, EVERY phase is an awkward one, but with Yuta being only 19 himself, this new family dynamic will mean navigating a potential minefield filled with epic disaster…”

‘Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise’ is getting a special release with a 4K remastered edition in a “Memorial Box” for its DVD.

“The Royal Space Force is established in Honnêamise – a fictional kingdom on a fictional planet. Although the force boasts 30 years of history, they haven’t been able to achieve solid results; people and the government have given up on them, seeing the force as a burden. Shirotsugh Lhadatt, the protagonist, is a member of the Royal Space Force, which far from their dreams have gone into idleness. One day, Shirotsugh meets Riqunni, a girl who preaches God’s word, and his destiny drastically changes, leading him to volunteer to be a space pilot…” Prepare to witness the legendary film that revolutionized the anime industry, launched the careers of dozens of today’s animation superstars such as Hideaki Anno and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto of “Evangelion” and put Studio GAINAX forever on the map as one of Japan’s premiere production houses.”

From sci-fi to fantasy to comedy, there is a wide variety with these releases.

‘X-Treme X-Men’ and ‘Avengers Assemble’ Comics Are Getting Relaunched

0

Marvel Comics is relaunching two of their popular titles with ‘X-Treme X-Men’ returning for the first time since 2013 and ‘Avengers Assemble’ which has been on hiatus since 2014 with the subtitle ‘Alpha.’

“The X-Treme X-Men are back in business,” Marvel said on their website. “In X-TREME X-MEN (2022) #1 by Chris Claremont and Salvador Larroca, a powerful psychic attack on Kitty Pryde will bring the team back together. Even so, the combined might of Bishop, Sage, Gambit, Rogue, Rachel Summers, Storm, and Wolverine may not be enough to stop Ogun and his insidious new plan. After this, the X-Men may never be the same!”

‘Avengers Assemble Alpha’ will see Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Wasp, Captain America, Thor, and several other members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembling together to battle Mephisto and the Masters of Evil.

“The greatest army of heroes ever assembled go to war against the deadliest group of villains who’ve ever lived in an epic story so monumental it can only come from the mind of super hero visionary Jason Aaron,” Marvel explained. “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE will close out Aaron’s nearly five-year run on Avengers with a breathtaking crossover between Aaron’s two current Avengers titles, AVENGERS and AVENGERS FOREVER. The saga will officially kick off in next month’s AVENGERS ASSEMBLE ALPHA #1, where Aaron will be joined by superstar artist Bryan Hitch, and fans will witness the start of a conflict beyond all imagination—a grand battle that stretches from the dawn of time, when Earth was protected by the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC to the twilight of all reality and everything in between!”

J. Scott Campbell is doing a special variant cover to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Avengers.

The ‘X-Treme X-Men’ and ‘Avengers Assemble Alpha’ has a planned release for November 30, 2022.
