A Statue of Jack Kirby’s Classic Doctor Doom Coming Soon!

0

Even though Doctor Doom is one of Marvel’s most unique and intriguing characters, we’ve yet to see him properly brought to life on the big screen. With the Fantastic Four joining the MCU soon, let’s hope the ruler of Latveria doesn’t end up like his 2015 counterpart. In the meantime, we can always fill that void with Doctor Doom collectibles!

This Dr. Doom statue is part of the aptly named Heritage Collection from Semic Studio. As you can tell, Victor’s likeness is based on the classic 1960s design that originated from the legendary Jack Kirby. That look comes in the form of a wide mask with prominent features (like the triangular nose and wide grimace) and, of course, the signature green cloak and gun holster on his belt.

Size-wise, the polystone statue isn’t as tall as I was expecting. Rather than being 12″ tall, Victor Von Doom only stands at 10.23″ in height based on the specs seen at the Big Bad Toy Store. So yeah, if you want to own this guy and live in the States, then the BBTS will be your best option since Semic Studio is based overseas.

Dr. Doom will run you $359.99 and is slated to arrive during the third quarter of 2023. The statue will be part of a minimal run of only 399 copies. Each one is handpainted by Daniel Moreira, and Alban Ficat did the original sculpt.

I’m unfamiliar with Semic Studio, so I cannot tell you much about the quality of their products. However, considering Dr. Doom is on the pricier side when it comes to collectibles on the same scale, I’d hope he’s a quality product.

If you want to see Doom’s sculpture being done, check out Ficat’s Instagram page. We’ll link a few of the images from his posts below.

Review: The Witcher: Blood Origin – Far Removed from The Witcher

If you want a good example of how not to approach a prequel to an established series, then look no further than Netflix’s prequel, The Witcher: Blood Origin. From the very start of this miniseries, everything that unfolds is an ongoing stumble to match up to the quality from the original Witcher series that starred Henry Cavil. But the lack of Geralt of Rivia isn’t the only major problem this series suffers from, and if anything it’s the least of the issues that contribute to why this miniseries just isn’t good. Many viewers, not just Witcher fans, will struggle to enjoy this at the most basic level.

The story of this series takes place around 1200 years before the events of The Witcher and covers the creation of the first Witcher. At the same time, details about the event known as the Conjunction of the Spheres from the lore of The Witcher books and games are covered. However, the major problem is how very little that is shown in Blood Origin is based on any of the source material from The Witcher books. There’s nothing wrong with seeing an original story being set in an established universe, but when so much is so far removed, it can be detrimental. This is made worse when certain key details about Witchers are heavily changed, flat-out contradicting the books and the Witcher series as well. If you’re a big fan of either one, you’re going to be very disappointed at how Blood Origin handles everything.

Witcher lore aside, the characters of this miniseries are incredibly forgettable and shallow in many ways. Much of the plot is focused on the gathering of seven heroes that come together with a common goal to assassinate the rulers of Xin’trea and the Golden Empire. Each of them has individual quirks and motivations as they gather together, mimicking elements of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai in some ways. But none of them have the amount of complexity or depth as any other character from the original Witcher series.

F’jall the Dog Clan Warrior, who we see become the first prototype Witcher and go through the trial of grasses, isn’t as likable or gravitating as Geralt. The rest of the group and the villains we meet are just as bad. Because of how short the miniseries is, lasting only four hour-long episodes in total, you only get a surface-level of look at everyone who appears. Some of them would be a lot more interesting individuality if the writing of the show was in better hands.

Speaking of which, the tone of the show feels way too lighthearted and subdued to take place within The Witcher universe. Blood Origin is much more easily comparable to a low-budget fantasy series on another network than what was seen in Netflix’s The Witcher, both in how it’s presented and how the dialogue between characters plays out. The grim and harsh reality of The Witcher’s fantasy world isn’t felt here. Even the few moments that edge on the gruesome or brutal aspects of this universe never sees any true follow-through. It’s like the show is shy to ever take a step towards being explicit with what is happening on screen, something The Witcher show was never afraid to do tastefully.

By the time you reach the end, The Witcher: Blood Origin feels like a rushed prequel that doesn’t succeed in complimenting The Witcher Netflix show. This miniseries feels lower in quality and could be skipped over without anything of value lost, even if you’re a huge fan of The Witcher. See a story that sets up many aspects of the universe could’ve been great, but how things are executed here are a clear sign that the showrunners would’ve been better off sticking to the source material. No matter how you look at it, The Witcher: Blood Origin is a lackluster miniseries that doesn’t live up to the legacy of its predecessor.

Discotek Media To Release ‘City Hunter’ Anime Films On Blu-Ray

0

The action-comedy anime ‘City Hunter’ is returning for a home video release from Discotek Media. The entertainment company is releasing the three spin-off films from the show as well as the TV specials released after the animated series concluded.

The first ‘City Hunter’ anime was made by Sunrise and directed by Kenji Kodama from 1985 to 1987. The films released after were titled ‘.357 Magnum’ (1989), ‘Bay City Wars’ (1990), and ‘Million Dollar Conspiracy’ (1990). The TV specials include ‘The Secret Service’ (1996), ‘Goodbye My Sweetheart’ (1997), and ‘Death of the Vicious Criminal Ryo Saeba’ (1999).

The Blu-Ray will include all of these movies and TV specials with both the original Japanese audio and the English dub. Discotek is set to release it on January 31, 2022, but it is available for pre-order on Right Stuf Anime’s store.

You can watch the trailer for ‘City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes’ below:

Discotek describes ‘City Hunter’ as follows,

“Ryo Saeba, the legendary City Hunter, is a first-class sweeper for hire, taking on jobs from protecting beautiful women to taking out bad guys permanently. He can be a private detective or hitman, whatever the case calls for, and it often requires the use of his superhuman marksmanship. But even so, Ryo can’t do it alone. His partner is Kaori Makimura, the younger sister of his murdered best friend. Kaori serves as his assistant, while also protecting their attractive clients from Ryo’s “mokkori” advances with her trusty supply of 100 ton hammers. Though they always appear to be at each other’s throats, the partners trust each other implicitly when the chips are down, and together they’ve solved various tough cases.”

‘City Hunter’ is based on an action-comedy manga created by Tsukasa Hojo and published by Jump Comics from February 26, 1985 to November 19, 1991.

Diamond Select Makes Mr. Fantastic Fantastically Bland

I’m still waiting for a worthwhile Mr. Fantastic action figure. The same with Sue Storm. At least with the Invisible Woman, you’ll get a semi-translucent action figure. With Reed Richards? Sometimes you get a couple of elongated arms, nothing spectacular. At least the animated series action figure from the ’90s had actual stretch arms. Will the upcoming Diamond Select figure do justice to one of Marvel’s leading men?

Nope.

The absolute best thing about this figure is that Reed Richards looks remarkably like Bruce Campbell. Imagine if Marvel or Disney had made that casting decision early on during the MCU’s life cycle. Oh, that would have been great. Reed isn’t a fascinating character, but Bruce could have given the super elastic mega genius a lot of life on the silver screen. Unfortunately, besides a passing resemblance to a great character actor, this Mr. Fantastic figure is bland. Very bland. Even his included accessory turns him into something equally dull: a pen holder.

Seriously, look at the pictures. The swappable body turns the long-running Marvel hero into a pen holder. Well, that is if that alternate body is hollow. Unfortunately, there are not enough pictures to tell, but I doubt Diamond Select would include a massive chunk of solid plastic for $29.99.

The description does say Mr. Fantastic comes with “interchangeable hands and stretched parts,” but the official website for this figure does not show any of that. Come on.

This is a fantastic figure! The Fantastic Four finally get their leader with the release of Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, in the Marvel Select line! This 7-inch action figure features 16 points of articulation, as well as interchangeable hands and stretched parts, including a lower body section that can wrap around an opponent! It comes in display-ready Select action figure packaging, with side-panel artwork for shelf display.

Ugh.

Meta Settles Second Privacy Lawsuit, This One cost $725M

0

It has been a lousy year for Meta (formerly Facebook). Thousands of layoffs and now over $5B in settlements. With the Metaverse looking more like an experiment than the future of social media, are there any upsides left for Mark Zuckerberg’s embattled company?

Not if Meta must continually pay out multi-million-dollar settlements regarding privacy issues. In February of this year, Meta agreed to pay $90M to plaintiffs who claimed that Facebook’s proprietary browser plug-in tracked user data even after accounts were logged off. According to the New York Post, this class-action lawsuit was started a decade ago.

In more recent news, Meta’s Cambridge Analytica problem is finally being solved, with the company settling that lawsuit with $725 million. This is yet another class action suit that involved the private data of 87 million Facebook users dating back to 2016-2018. According to CNBC, Cambridge Analytica was given unrestrictive access to data to “inform political campaigns.”

Of course, Meta deflected any blame and spat out the typical corporate speak, which means very little considering the number of times the company had to settle, “We pursued a settlement as it’s in the best interest of our community and shareholders. In addition, over the last three years we revamped our approach to privacy and implemented a comprehensive privacy program.

As far as Cambridge Analytica is concerned, the firm has been closed for over four years, but who knows how much damage was done. Unfortunately, the company was willing to dive head-first into some devious dealings to aid candidates’ campaigns. Stealing user data is one thing, but the London-based consulting firm was also looking to employ “sex workers, bribes, ex-spies and fake news” to get the job done.

Sadly, those at the top of CA have formed multiple other businesses looking to influence politics, albeit on a smaller scale. Check out this Wired article from 2018 for more on that.

Idris Elba Returns As Luther In Upcoming Netflix Film

‘Thor’ star Idris Elba is returning to his role as English police detective John Luther in the upcoming film ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun.’ The movie is set to take place after the series 2019 finale where the detective defeated his longtime foe Alice Morgan played by ‘The Affair’ actress Ruth Wilson.

“He’s just very haunted by things he’s done,” Elba said, according to an Entertainment Weekly report. “He’s done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he’s ended up in jail.”

“So that’s where we start the story. He’s contemplating what he’s going to do with his life,” he continued. “Luther is just so haunted — that’s his whole thing.”

“Even when he’s a free man, he can’t help but chase it, chase the ghosts that get into his head. And I think that’s what drives him in this film. He’s just very haunted by things he’s done, things he could have done, people that have died,” he added.

The film will see Luther cross paths with some new characters played by ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ actor Andy Serkis and ‘Chewing Gum’ actress Cynthia Erivo.

Director Jamie Payne explained, “The story in some ways continues — if you binge the series from season one to the film, the story is continuous. But because the film has got such a larger platform, we thought it was important that if someone was watching the film for the first time that it had its own story. So you could watch the film and go back and then binge the series. It was important to all of us that the audience could find a way into the series, and to the lore.”

‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ is set to stream on Netflix in March 2023.

The original ‘Luther’ series ran on BBC for five seasons between 2010 and 2019.

Sentai Filmworks Announces January Anime Blu-Ray Releases

0

Sentai Filmworks announced their January release slate for their home video releases. They include an isekai, drama, teen romance, fantasy fiction, and epic heists. They are planning more releases in the coming months, but for those heading into 2023, they are dropping some Blu-ray DVD box sets.

They released the list as follows on their website:

Lupin the Third Part 6

Master thief Arsène Lupin the Third and his usual entourage of peculiar but insanely talented criminal cronies are back, but this time they may have finally met their match! That’s because instead of Inspector Zenigata, who has never been quite able to beat Lupin in a game of wits, Lupin is now up against no less than the legendary Sherlock Holmes! And to make it personal, Lupin is wanted on the suspicion of having murdered Holmes’ longtime associate Watson! With an antagonist like that, it will take everything Lupin has to clear his name while also trying to steal a treasure from a shadowy organization that’s been manipulating the British government! Still not enough? Then let’s add tracking down the mystery of who Lupin’s own mother really was as the capper for the sixth thrilling part of LUPIN THE 3RD!

I’m Quitting Heroing

After defeating the Demon King, former hero Leo Demonheart is learning that he was just a little too good at what he did, to the point that many now suspect that his real goal was to become the Demon King himself. Which, given that his name is Demonheart and he was created as part of a secret project, is perhaps not as far-fetched as it sounds, but now nobody wants to employ him, and a former hero has still got to eat. So, he applies for a job with the Demon King Echidna herself… but she doesn’t want him either. Fortunately, some of her subordinates are more appreciative of his skills, and if he wears a disguise, he might just get away with becoming the new bad boy on the block after deciding I’M QUITTING HEROING!

No Game, No Life

For years, 18-year-old Sora and his 11-year-old stepsister Shiro have lived as shut-ins, rarely leaving their house, unable to be separated without panic attacks, and playing videogames as an escape from reality. On the internet, however, they’re known as the legendary videogame tag-team BLANK, where their unrivaled skill inexplicably leads to them finally getting out of the house in the most extreme way possible – pulled over into another world to defend humanity in the most insane and deadly competition ever imagined! But hey, no pressure. If they fail it will only mean death for them, and slavery or destruction for the rest of the human race. Can two misfits who can barely cross the street defeat a horde of otherworldly champions and save our planet? The ultimate battle has begun in No Game, No Life!

Waiting in the Summer

There was a time when groups of teenagers would get together to put on plays by themselves, but with the availability of modern cameras, they’re just as likely now to make movies instead. Kaito Kirishima is one such aspiring filmmaker, and since the death of his parents, capturing stories and images on video has become an even more important way of permanently preserving memories. Then things get strange and he meets a girl who’s from a bit farther away than usual, and they bring Kaito’s closest circle of friends together on a project that will change their worlds forever. Because little else bonds people together like sharing a secret, and the new girl Ichika has a major one. Something wonderful lies ahead as a group of teens discover the mysteries and marvels WAITING IN THE SUMMER!

Himouto! Umaru-chan R

Umaru Doma isn’t a superhero, but she could be a super-villain if she wasn’t so lazy, and addicted to snack foods, comics, and video games. At school, she still appears to be the fashionable “Miss Perfect” her fellow students believe she is, but when she gets home, the popular girl façade comes off! Then the hamster cloak goes on, and her ogre-like otaku side is unleashed! So far, the only one who knows the whole truth is her loyal servant… er, older brother, Taihei, but lately Umaru’s been finding it harder to maintain the personalities that different people know her by, while her relationships with Nana, Kirie, and Sylphynford all seem to be getting closer. Is she getting… gasp! Nicer? Or is it all part of some diabolical plot in HIMOUTO! UMARU-CHAN R?

Love, Election and Chocolate

Joining clubs is an important part of Japan’s educational experience, but many require more expenditure of brains or brawn than suits Yuki Ojima’s tastes. Fortunately, the Food Research Club’s requirements are easier to swallow, allowing a slacker like Yuki to sit around chewing the fat with his childhood friend, Chisato, and other pretty girls… until a candidate for Student Council President tries to spoil this winning recipe and Yuki’s culinary haven is threatened by her campaign to shut down clubs like the FRC! Can our hero step up to the plate and defend his club in the most unappetizing extracurricular activity of all: School Politics? Will the FRC unite the other “meritless” club members in a crusade to preserve their right to choose freely, or will disaster be served when the dish of the day is LOVE, ELECTION, AND CHOCOLATE?

The entries will be released between January 3rd and January 24th, respectively.

Sony’s DualSense Customizable Controller Coming Soon!

If you’ve wanted a PlayStation 5 controller with more customizable features, Sony will solve that problem next month with the DualSense Edge. From button remapping to stick sensitivity, this pricy peripheral could make all the difference in your experience gaming on the PS5.

The DualSense Edge shares many similarities to the XBOX Elite controller. Both come with a carrying case, multiple swappable thumbstick caps, and additional triggers. However, Sony’s version is a bit more expensive. While the Elite is $179, the Edge will be $199.99 when it launches on January 26th, 2023. The PS5 controller is available exclusively through the PlayStation Store.

If you have the official PS5 controller charger, the Edge is compatible with that hardware. That being said, there should be no issue using the other licensed third-party docks with the Edge unless Sony somehow made charging of the controller proprietary.

Regarding how much this thing differs from the PS5’s original DualSense controllers, much of the peripheral is the same besides the additional buttons. The grips retain the same slip-resistant surface, and the touchpad appears to be the same size. The USB-C port, however, has changed a little. The included lockable connector housing will keep the USB cable hooked to your controller. Honestly, I wasn’t aware that this was an issue that needed to be addressed.
