Home Blog Page 105

I’m going back to blogging because Twitter still kinda sucks.

So I think I’m going back to blogging and giving Twitter a rest for a while.

It just makes me angry and wastes time.

When it was announced that Elon Musk was buying Twitter, I hoped the site could be turned around and the insanity would slowly end. Essentially, I wanted Twitter to roll it back to 2009. That is cat pics, food pics, artwork, geek news, and very little political discussion.

But the opposite happened. Twitter became more unruly. More contentious. It’s a different caliber of garbage now, but it’s still mostly garbage.

This could be because Musk is a “wrong thinker,” according to the Tumblr refugees who’ve parked it on the app, or that the mainstream media has lost control of the platform and people are lashing out. It didn’t help that Musk unbanned some folks that the Tumblr crowd really didn’t like.

(These are the same people who swore they’d rage quit the platform if Musk bought it, of course.)

Whatever the reason, it’s clear to me that Twitter will never go back to what I want it to be, and I’m just wasting a lot of my time engaging in bad-faith arguments with legit mentally ill people.

And while it does seem like there’s kinda sorta a plan to eventually turn Twitter into a useful “everything app,” it’s just not there yet. And, frankly, I don’t have the patience to wait for it to get there. As a content creator, there isn’t even a financial incentive to put up with the bullshit at this point.

(You’d be surprised what people are willing to put up with if there’s money involved. Well, actually, no you probably wouldn’t be.)

So the plan is to spend more time building up our own sites, and party like it’s still 2007.

I’ll be posting more op-eds, news, art tips and hot takes over here, and Geeky likely will as well.

We’re also planning on growing out The Reef throughout the year and will have more details about upcoming comic book projects, tabletop games and our planned podcast network.

All in all, I’m hoping that cutting back on social media will let me get back on track and actually make stuff again.

I’ll still keep my Twitter account, of course, but will use it mostly to post links to articles over here.

And who knows? Maybe someday Twitter will actually be worth the time sink.

Super7’s 10th Wave Of TMNT Ultimates Is The Best In Years!

We’ve been wondering if it was time for Super7’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimates series to come to an end. The past few releases suffer from the same issue that plagued the Playmates line in the 1990s: too many wacky variants. However, Wave 10 has possibly the best selection of characters we’ve seen hit the line in quite some time!

The latest TMNT Ultimates lineup is a mixed match of characters from the cartoon, Mirage comics, and Playmates series. We’ve got comic book Casey Jones, cartoon Rat King, and two inspired by the Playmates toys: Classic Rocker Leo and Ninja April.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimates Wave 10 is expected to arrive this Winter.

    • 2x Guitar playing hands
    • 1x Left pointing hand
  • 1x Double neck guitar with removable swords
  • 1x Guitar strap
  • 1x Microphone stand
  • 1x Superstar sunglasses
  • 1x Blue oyster pizza

April comes with the following:

  • 3x Interchangeable heads
    • 1x Bandana head
    • 1x Masked head
    • 1x Headwrap head
  • 10x Interchangeable hands
    • 2x Fist hands
    • 2x Gripping hands(vertical)
    • 2x Gripping hands (horizontal)

    • 1x Battle-damaged head
  • 6x Interchangeable hands
    • 2x Fists
    • 2x Gripping hands
    • 2x Open hands
  • 3x Baseball bats
  • 3x Hockey pucks
  • 1x Putter
  • 1x Hockey stick
  • 1x Sports bag

The Rat King has three heads but only three rats? Weird.

  • 3 Interchangeable heads
    • 1x Angry head
    • 1x Rat control head
    • 1x Smiling head
  • 8x Interchangeable hands
    • 2x Fists
    • 2x Gripping hands
    • 2x Flute playing hands
    • 2x Open hands
  • 1x Flute
  • 1x Pizza rat
  • 2x Rats

Did anyone notice that the Rat King seems a little too handsome while Ninja April is wearing more than her retro toy counterpart? Odd choice. Regardless, I’m glad that Super7’s TMNT Ultimates included the Mirage Casey Jones. Hopefully, he’s an improvement over the NECA version.

Diablo IV Beta Access Is Locked Behind A KFC ‘Double Down’ Sandwich

0

Are you ready to punish your stomach so you can get early access to Diablo IV’s beta? KFC is giving away codes to Blizzard’s upcoming sequel, but only if you buy the weird bunless sandwich.

Thankfully, KFC isn’t making you eat their food to get the Diablo beta. All you have to do is order the Double Down or “any other KFC Sandwich on the app until March 18th to receive early access beta to the fiery & much anticipated Diablo IV.” However, if you were wondering about the nutritional facts behind the meme-worthy menu item, it’s 930-950 calories.

Diablo IV will officially launch on June 6th, and according to PC Mag, the beta will allow the Double Down’s victims to play the complete prologue and Act 1. Thankfully, the beta is open to gamers on nearly every current platform, including PS4, PS5, XBOX One, XBOX Series S|X, and Windows-based PCs.

Here’s the small print you’ll probably be reading on the toilet after subjecting your digestive system to the Double Down:

For a limited time at participating locations. Prices may vary. Early access code exclusively available with purchase of sandwich on KFC.com or the KFC app between 3/8 and 3/18, while supplies last. Offer not available in restaurant or on third-party platforms. Customers will receive a code to the email provided at time of eligible purchase for early beta access to play Diablo IV between 3/17 and 3/19. Limit 1 redemption code per person. Only U.S. orders eligible. © 2023 Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. Diablo and Battle.net are registered trademarks of Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. in the U.S. and/or other countries.

I was totally unaware that the Double Down was still available. To be fair, I was also under the assumption that KFC was gone, too. I see so few of them these days compared to Popeye’s or Church’s Chicken chains.

‘Saint Tail’ Is Coming To Blu-Ray DVD Via Discotek Media

0

‘Saint Girl’ is a magical fantasy anime from TMS Entertainment that ran for three seasons between 1995 and 1996 for a total of forty-three episodes. Discotek Media announced that they are bringing the entire series in its original Japanese audio with English subtitles to North America through a high-definition blu-ray DVD release.

The release will also include the first fifteen episodes in an English dubbed version. These are the only episodes that were produced with an English voice cast. Discotek plans to release the DVD box set on April 25th, 2023, though it is currently available for pre-order on the Right Stuf Anime website.

You can watch the trailer below:

At one point, the producers of the English dub removed any religious references made in the original version of the first seven episodes, though that stipulation was removed later.

The anime is based on the manga series ‘Mysterious Thief Saint Tail’ by Japanese author Megumi Tachikawa. It was published by Kodansha in Japan and Tokyopop in the United States. It is currently out of print.

Wikipedia describes the anime’s synopsis as follows,

“Middle school girl Meimi Haneoka transforms into the mysterious thief Saint Tail and steals back random belongings that were stolen using magic tricks. She’s assisted by her best friend, classmate, and sister-in-training, Seira Mimori, whose position in the church after school each day allows her to hear the troubles of those who have been wronged and have come to pray to God.

While Saint Tail steals to right the wrongs done to innocent people, she’s considered a thief by the police force. Her classmate, Daiki Asuka Jr.—called Asuka Jr.—and son of Detective Asuka, is hot on her trail. Saint Tail delivers notices of her planned capers to Asuka Jr., to give him a fair chance to catch her.”

‘Saint Tail’ also received several video game adaptions that were made available on the Sega Saturn, Master System, and Game Gear gaming consoles.

J.J. Abrams Produced ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Animated Series Back At Amazon

0

Billed as a “spiritual successor” to ‘Batman: The Animated Series,’ the J.J. Abrams’ ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ was canceled at HBO Max following a slashing of content from the streaming service’s library. However, it is being reported that the Batman series is back in business with a new home at Amazon.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader has found a new home at Amazon,” The Hollywood Reporter said in an article. “The streamer and retail giant has handed out a two-season order for the animated series, which was originally set up at HBO Max. Caped Crusader landed at the Jennifer Salke-led streamer following Warner Bros. Animation parent company Warner Bros. Discovery scrapping the show in August — more than a year after it was ordered straight to series — amid a round of cost-cutting. Other streamers, including Netflix, Apple and Hulu, also kicked the tires on the project that marks a reunion for executive producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, who previously collaborated on The WB Network’s beloved Felicity.”

Bruce Timm, a Warner Animation Studio veteran who had famously worked on ‘Batman: TAS,’ was collaborating with Abrams and Reeves on the production of the animated show. Award-winning comic book writer Ed Brubaker, who has written for DC Comics and Marvel Entertainment, is a part of the show’s team and will work on all ten episodes of the first season.

No release date has been confirmed nor has any cast or crew been revealed outside of Timm, Reeves, and Abrams. There has been no casting announcement at this time.

The recently passed Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy (Batman: TAS, The Killing Joke, Justice League Unlimited) was rumored to be in talks to return to the cowl for this series. Following his tragic death, it has not been confirmed who would will take on the identity of Bruce Wayne and his masked alter ego.

Bob Odenkirk Starring In Remake Of Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’

The 2003 romantic drama ‘The Room’ is infamous for its unintentional hilarity and the mysteries surrounding its writer and director Tommy Wiseau. Ever since its release, it has garnered a cult following and has since gone on to be a favorite of various cinephiles. Twenty years after its release, ‘Better Call Saul’ star Bob Odenkirk has confirmed that is starring in a remake of the film as the protagonist Johnny.

“This is real. This is true. And let me tell you, I tried my best to SELL every line, as honestly as I could…and I had a BLAST,” he wrote on social media, but did not give a release date away.

“We know that the production is going to benefit a charity called amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. The organization Acting For a Cause is also involved, though it’s unclear if they’re also benefiting from donations, or if they’re only backing the remake. Brando Crawford, the founder of Acting For a Cause, took credit for direction in a recent Instagram post. As for Odenkirk’s participation, we can confirm that he did indeed participate in the film back in January. We’ve also collected several social media posts from people involved for you to check out below,” Slash Film reported.

‘The Room’ was written, produced, and directed by Tommy Wiseau who played the protagonist Johnny. It stars Wiseau’s longtime friend Greg Sestero who plays Mark, a character named after Matt Damon. It also stars Juliette Danielle, Philip Haldiman, Carolyn Minnott, Robyn Paris, Scott Holmes, Dan Janjigian, Kyle Vogt, and Greg Ellery. It was shot digitally and on 35 mm film.

In 2013 Sestero wrote ‘The Disaster Artist’ a book detailing the filming of ‘The Room.’ It was made into a 2017 film by A24 and directed by James Franco, who also played Wiseau in the film. Dave Franco starred as Sestero.

Review: Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty – Team Ninja Souls

A rough start doesn’t always mean that you’ll end up with a bad finish, especially if you don’t stumble too hard along the way. This is how one’s experience may go when playing Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty on multiple platforms. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t gotten the chance to play many of the Dark Souls-inspired games to come out in the last few years, usually called Soulsborne games, then you’re in for a real culture shock. These games are known to be difficult and often frustrating for many reasons, the least of which are the intimidating and harsh battles they throw players into. However, Wo Long doesn’t continuously beat down players that stick with it past the steep barrier of entry at the start.

The plot of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is similar to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but with a dark fantasy twist on everything. Players take on the role of a nameless soldier in the middle of the conflict and come across many legendary warriors as they fight off monsters and dark acolytes. Because this is a Koei Tecmo game, you may recognize many of the warriors encountered from the Dynasty Warriors franchise. And while not much is really added to their already over-the-top personalities from that series, Wo Long does manage to put all of these warriors into some crazy battles that look flashy. The nameless warrior you control does eventually outshine them with the impressive armor and weapons you gather throughout the game, but everyone still looks good the whole time.

What Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty does well however it open up more options for players who are unaccustomed to games of this genre. While there are still annoying design choices to deal with, such as interacting with a character multiple times, things like movement and your attacks in combat are much more lenient. Because of this at times, you may find yourself roaming into an area where you’ll start to notice some bad technical issues, such as texture pop-ins and disappearing obstacles. Some locations with a lot of foliage can appear barren at a distance, but then suddenly become dense within a split second. It’s rough looking, but luckily the issue doesn’t always affect gameplay in a severe way during combat or just before you’re about to engage an enemy.

Traversing areas, battlefields that are treated like stages or maps, can be interesting as you navigate obstacles and elevated terrain with a double jump. It feels so much more open than other games in the genre, edging more towards the same feeling as other Tecmo Koei games like Ninja Gaiden, but with the gameplay foundation of Nioh. You don’t feel weighted down by limited movement, but instead are able to explore your surroundings freely without much hassle.

There are a lot of similarities between Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and other games of this genre, most of which you’ll recognize if you’ve played other games beforehand. Luckily, there are small changes in each area that help Wo Long stand out from its predecessors but in small ways. Raising banners within locations is the same as lighting a bonfire in Dark Souls, but you also have smaller banners you can raise that both heal you and mark off checkpoints within Wo Long. Other aspects like boss battles do have that small buildup to the big door you open, much like the fog you pass through in other games, but they’re preceded by a great-looking cutscene that arguably looks better and contributes to the plot more.

Leveling up is almost exactly the same as every other Souls-like game, but Wo Long plays up the theme of the five elements that tie to different aspects of your character stats, which also influence the kind of magic you can learn. Some may prefer these extra details while others may not care so much, but they do add something to make the experience a little bit better.

Combat is fierce, with battles being tense at every encounter. You’ll be fighting monsters, enemy soldiers, and multiple kinds of evil beings that will kill you at every chance they get. Attacks from enemies that have a red glow can be parried and open them up for devastating counterattacks for big damage, even though the timing can be very strict in most cases. Paying attention to movement patterns and knowing when to deflect is key to staying vigilant. However, combat can be offset by some goofy line of sight when taking a stealthier approach to enemies.

You can sneak your way up to a target that is looking at you and still manage to move around for a backstab as long as you move slowly toward it. You can even manage to get an overhead sneak attack with enemies looking in your direction if you’re at any elevation, even if it’s the slightest lift off the ground. This most certainly looks ridiculous in some situations, but you’ll appreciate the extra leeway in battles with larger beasts and deadlier enemies, especially if you can get the jump on them for extra damage. When you jump into combat without that, most battles will have you on your toes, and sometimes a quick death.

Instead of being as straightforward as other Souls-like games, Wo Long has aspects to its combat that open more attack options and opportunities for players. Your character has a morale level that increases as you take out enemies and raise banners, which unlocks new attacks and magic, as well as the momentum they have against enemies. Deflecting and parrying attacks are key to gaining the upper hand in combat, but having a high morale level is also very helpful against stronger enemies. As you level up at rest spots, you can learn stronger attacks that require higher morale levels to use but their benefits are a great payoff. At first, it can be intimidating to engage with enemies with much higher morale levels, but taking the small time to wipe out smaller enemies and discover banners can even the battlefield and encourage taking bigger risks.

If there’s one thing that can be said about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, it’s that the first impression it gives doesn’t fully represent the whole experience it contains. For some who are already experienced with playing games like this, Wo Long might feel like a breeze to play through. But for others, there’s a lot more to look into and enjoy beyond the difficulty. Wo Long is still challenging, but manages to give players enough breathing room to tackle tougher challenges without being overly punishing or feeling unfair. While the technical issues found within definitely need improvement, the majority of the game is interesting to play through. You’ll just have to get past the annoying first-area boss to really see what this game is all about.

Have you gotten a chance to play Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty yet? What is your favorite Soulsborne game and which one do you think is the best? Post your comments down below and let us know your thoughts!

“The Age of Monsters has begun, and the only being who can stop a legion of the world’s most depraved creatures from overtaking the Marvel Universe is the INCREDIBLE HULK,” Marvel said on their website. “Enter this horror-fueled new era of the strongest there is when writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Nic Klein relaunch INCREDIBLE HULK this June.”

“As an enraged Hulk tries to take control of Bruce Banner’s body permanently, a mysterious immortal turns every monster in the Marvel Universe against Banner in an attempt to free their creator, the primordial Mother of Horrors. “Nic Klein is a genius, and working with him is pushing me to write a story worthy of his very best,” he continued.

Klein agreed, “Phillip and I put a big serving of monsters, a bit of eldritch gods, a good dash of suspense, and some cool new characters into the cauldron.” He added, “We’re trying to serve up a Hulk the readers haven’t seen before. And if they like it half as much as I’m enjoying drawing it, they’re gonna love it.”

The Incredible Hulk #1 is set to debut at comic book shops on June 21, 2023.

King Tut, Batboat, And Wayne Manor Coming To McFarlane’s Batman ’66 Toyline

More wonderful Batman toys! I wasn’t sure if McFarlane Toys would keep this line going, but here we are with more vehicles, characters, and playsets!

Coming soon, Batman and Robin can take to the water with the Batboat. It’s unclear if the sea vessel will float in water, but it looks great. Also, lIt’ll probably be affordable like the Batmobile, which is very welcome by us collectors right now.

Finally! King Tut! I never thought we’d get Egghead and King Tut, but here we are. I can’t wait for McFarlane Toys to release army-builder figures like nameless goons!

William Omaha McElroy, highly respected professor of Egyptology at Yale University, was struck in the head by a rock during a violent student protest. When he awoke, McElroy believed himself to be the legendary King Tutankhamun reincarnated, and Gotham City the ancient city of Thebes.

This latest wave includes a surprising appearance of Two-Face. Harvey Dent’s evil half didn’t appear in the original Batman ’66 series. He did pop up in later comics and an animated adventure based on the show’s universe. Harvey doesn’t come with the BIFF, POW, or ZAM accessories, unlike other action figures in this series. Instead, the duality-obsessed villain is packing an assumedly 1:1 replica of his infamous two-headed coin.

Batman '66

Harvey Dent has led a deeply conflicted life. Possessing a split personality that veers between two extremes—good and evil— Dent goes by the name of Two-Face. It is an apt description of his physical appearance. Scarred by acid into outwardly becoming the monster he once hid away from the world, Two-Face has become a tragic figure and one of Batman’s most unpredictable and dangerous opponents.

The Wayne Manor playset is a great addition for those of us who purchased the Batcave released last year. The Manor’s study has the Shakespear bust, Batphone, and the bat poles hidden behind the bookcase. Too bad it cannot attach itself to the top of the Batcave playset.

Topol of Flash Gordon and James Bond Fame Has Passed Away

Actor Chaim Topol, better known simply by his last name, passed away today. Topol was widely known for two iconic roles: Dr. Hans Zarkov in Mike Hodges’s Flash Gordon feature film and as the pious Tevye in the big screen adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof.

According to Variety, Topol had been battling Alzheimer’s disease. At 87, the beloved actor passed into the great beyond while staying in Tel Aviv. Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, validated the sad news. In a kind statement, Herzog said the late actor was a gifted man “who conquered many stages in Israel and overseas, filled the cinema screens with his presence and especially entered deep into our hearts.”

Like many kids of the 1980s, I was first introduced to Topol via his performance as the slightly unhinged Dr. Zarkov. In a cast full of people with prominent personalities, Topol was right up there with Brian Blessed, commanding your attention whenever on screen.

Years before Flash Gordon, Topol starred in thousands of Fiddler On The Roof stage performances, along with its 1971 screen adaptation. He played the loving but strictly religious father named Tevye, someone so different from Zarkov. In fact, Topol’s turn as Tevye may be considered the gold standard for anyone who takes on the role, as I’ve seen quite a few actors try to imitate his performance over the years.

The late actor also spent some time opposite Roger Moore in the 007 James Bond universe. A year after Flash Gordon was released, Topol appeared in For Your Eyes Only as reformed smuggler Milos Columbo. As expected, Columbo is just as charismatic as Topol’s other characters. Sadly, this was a one-off role, and the character never returned to the series.

When did you first see Topol in action? Was it in Flash Gordon like many of us? Let us know in the comments section below.
