The SAG-AFTRA Strike is ongoing, causing a lot of stress for industry professionals. Productions are shut down, people behind the scenes can’t work, and some actors are growing increasingly frustrated with the negotiation roadblocks and the strike in general. One such actor is former Arrow star Stephen Amell.
Variety reports that the current Heels actor decided to speak out against the SAG-AFTRA Strike but insisted he still supported the union. His words have already sparked some harsh criticism.
During a Q&A Galaxycon, Amell was asked a question (which we don’t have the whole quote) that ended with, “… and the ongoing strike that is happening?” Since we don’t know the full context of the question, we cannot speculate why Stephen Amell decided to take a precarious stance. However, what we can do is give you his entire response:
“I feel like I’m insulated in Hollywood, uh, ’cause that’s where I live [inaudible], like all the stereotypes that exist. Um, so I feel like a lot of people in this room aren’t aware of the strike. Um. I support my union; I do. And I stand with them. I do not support striking. I don’t. I think that it is a, uh, reductive negotiating tactic. [Audible sigh] And, um, I find the entire thing incredibly, uh, frustrating. And I think the thinking as it pertains to shows — like the show that I’m on that premiered last night — I think it’s myopic. And I, uh, stand with my union.”
Heels premiered on Starz in 2021 and just started its second season last week. Speaking out against the strike could be highly detrimental to Amell’s career. We’ll have to wait and see what repercussions he faces from fellow actors, agents, and studios.
