The New Dungeons & Dragons Featurette Is Very MCU

Did anyone else remember that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a thing? Apart from some toys I covered over the Summer, I’d completely forgotten that this movie was due out in 2023. So yes, the film is still happening, and Paramount Pictures released a new featurette where the cast cheerleads the upcoming fantasy epic.

Due out on March 31st, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will try to wash away the so-bad-it’s-good D&D film from 2000. The Courtney Solomon movie gave us what could be described as Jeremy Irons’s best and most hammy performance ever. It was glorious. This new D&D, though? It looks like it’s playing it safe with MCU-styled quipping and no over-the-top craziness.

Chris Pine puts on his best 2009 James T. Kirk performance while stuck in a land of dungeons, dragons, wizards, elves, and barbarians. Meanwhile, Michelle Rodriguez plays Michelle Rodriguez, but dressed in more leather and carrying an ax. These two are joined by Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, and that guy who screamed his way through Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Justice Smith).

I kid, of course. The movie looks like it will be mindless fun with a mixture of good practical effects and some iffy CGI. I can work with that.

“A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.”

The problem with playing it safe is that there won’t be anything to make the movie memorable. This is the sort of problem we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately. The safe choices may lead to easy acceptance by general audiences, but so many of Phase 4’s films are forgettable. Take a chance or two, and you’ll get something unique like this:
