Super7’s ThunderCats Ultimates Wave 6 Pays Homage to LJN

Super7’s ThunderCats Ultimates is starting to rehash earlier figures, but at least this wave is honoring the original ThunderCats toys of the 1980s. With simplified paint jobs and fewer accessories, Wave 6 brings us back to when LJN produced toys based on Lion-O’s friends and foes.
Cheetara, Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, and Monkian encompass this latest wave. Although these figures are priced at the typical $55, there will be less in each box than usual. We spotted this listing over at Toy Ark. For some reason, the direct link to the figures on Super7’s official website is returning a 404 error message.

The LJN ThunderCats toys were interesting. They were larger than the 3.75″ Kenner and Hasbro figures we were used to at the time. The play features for Mumm-Ra and Lion-O were a bit out of left field. The two main characters had light-up gimmicks rather than just the simple arm swinging action features. Lion-O’s and Mumm-Ra’s eyes plate would glow when you pressed a unique battery-powered “power ring” on their backs. The issue I remember is that you’d have to press the device hard to get a good connection.

LJN, long after the company’s demise, became infamous in the late 2000s with the help of the Angry Video Game Nerd. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, LJN published several video games based on movie and comic book licenses. Mainly appearing on the NES console, LJN games were typically quick cash-ins that rarely rose above the level of rentals at best.
