Simu Liu Reportedly Dealing with Mental Health ‘Problems’, Seeking Treatment

The MCU’s Shang-Chi star Simu Liu is undergoing therapy for ‘problems’ likely related to his mental health. This is coming directly from the actor himself via a tweet.

The actor said “About to start regular sessions with a therapist for the first time and quite honestly pretty incredible that I get to force someone to listen to my problems once a week and occasionally provide input??”

While it’s likely nothing as serious as, say, a typical day in the life of Ezra Miller, the pressure of being thrust into the MCU limelight might be getting to Liu.

The actor elaborated on his mental health even further on a recent Instagram post, saying…

Exactly one year ago, this little movie came out and completely changed my life. It’s been nothing short of the absolute best ride… but after having some time to reflect I know that this life also comes at a massive cost.

I was suddenly catapulted into a stratosphere I had no business being in, and was woefully unprepared to deal with the mental ramifications of a life lived in public. I felt like I was riding the hell out of the learning curve, crushing all my talk show appearances and interviews, but I was also neglecting to spend the necessary time to check in with myself and prioritize my mental health.

I’ve shot four movies since, currently shooting my fifth, and also published a memoir. I’ve barely had time to breathe because I’ve been so afraid of taking my foot off the gas. I was SO obsessed with the idea of taking up space and representing for my community that I worked nearly myself to exhaustion. And while I am SO proud of my achievements and my work ethic, I know that moving forward something has to change.

So today on the anniversary of the release of Shang-Chi I’m especially excited because I’m in therapy and prioritizing my health. I’m healing and well on my way to becoming something more than a superhero; I’m on my way to becoming a good and decent man.

(But also stay tuned cause I do love doing this and will continue for many many years to come)

Simu Liu is no stranger to online controversy and Internet slap fights.

Simu Liu is not afraid to get into it with the internet, which could be exacerbating his mental health issues and exhaustion.

Recently, Liu was slammed by Twitter users for making light of the cancellation of the Batgirl movie.

Liu has reportedly received backlash for being “too ugly” to be cast in the upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie.

Liu also got backlash from comic book fans for refusing to sign old issues of the Shang-Chi Marvel comic book, Master of Kung Fu, deeming them racist.

Before that, Liu’s old reddit account had been linked to a post seemingly comparing gay people to pedophiles.

And before that, Liu went on the offensive against Disney CEO Bob Chapek for not having more faith in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Oh, and Liu seemingly got Shang-Chi banned in China by calling out the country’s government.

So if the actor is having some mental health issues because of all of that stress and drama, it’s somewhat understandable. And his therapist will have no shortage of things to talk about.
