The 80s Cartoon ‘Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs’ Blu-Ray Release Announced

0

‘Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs’ is an animated series that ran for fifty-two episodes between 1987 and 1988. Developed by World Events Productions, the cartoon attempted to recreate the success of other space Westerns such as ‘BraveStarr’ or ‘Voltron’ with limited success. The show has developed somewhat of a cult following and they got some good news.

Discotek Media announced that they would release the entire series on standard definition in a Blu-ray. The box set has a planned release date of August 29th, 2023, though it is available for pre-order on the Right Stuf Anime website.

The series starred an ensemble cast of popular Saturday Morning Cartoon voice actors including Pat Musick (Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears, The Further Adventures of SuperTed), Rob Paulsen (Sonic the Hedgehog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Pat Fraley (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man), Townsend Coleman (Adventures in Odyssey, Fraggle Rock: The Animated Series), and Peter Cullen (Transformers, Winnie the Pooh).

You can take a look at the box set below:

Wikipedia describes the synopsis as follows,

“The series is set in the distant future. Humans have spread beyond living on Earth and have colonized planets across the universe, creating a New Frontier of man. In order to protect these new settlers and maintain law and order in the New Frontier, Earth’s Cavalry Command was created. Cavalry Command is a military organization that maintains an army and fleet of ships to protect the New Frontier and the residents of the planets within it known as Settlers. Within Cavalry Command is a unit of special operatives known as Star Sheriffs that function as the organization’s field agents, investigating any crimes and plots that threaten the security of the New Frontier.”

The series is based on the 1984 Japanese anime ‘Star Musketeer Bismarck’ from Studio Pierrot.

Animated Reboots of Classics ‘Bewitched’ and ‘The Partridge Family’ Is In The Works

0

As part of reshaping stories from their library of classic hit shows for kids of today, Sony Pictures Television – Kids (SPT – Kids) is reportedly developing adaptions of the classic 60s and 70s sitcom series Bewitched and The Partridge Family. These animated adaptions are currently in development but because of the Writers Strike, a writer has not been named for either projects.

“There’s such a vast history at Sony Pictures Television with properties that we could play around with and reinvent, introducing a whole new generation of kids to them.”

Executive VP and general manager of SPT – Kids Joe D’Ambrosia

In the original live action series of Bewitched (1964-1972), the story was centered around a witch named Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) who is married to an ordinary human named Darrin. The sitcom centered around their married life while trying to keep her powers hidden from the world around them. Hanna-Barbera produced the opening and closing animated credits.

The opening credits of the 1960s show:

The new animated Bewitched series will have the main character be of the couples’ 13-year old daughter named Tabitha. She learns to juggle two lives while attending middle school, as well as also secretly enrolled in a magical academy run by her witch grandmother Endora. The series is described as a cross between Hannah Montana and Harry Potter.

In the 1970-1974 live action series The Partridge Family, Shirley Jones starred as a widowed mother who leads a musical group with her five children. One of the actors portraying her children was her real life step-son David Cassidy. It was later turned into an animated series in 1974 as a Hanna-Barbera cartoon titled The Partridge Family 2200 A.D., which lasted for 1 season with 16 episodes.

Opening credits to the 1970s show:

In the newly announced animated series, the Partridge family is getting a completely different setting as a Black family living in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood. In the ’70s series, the family traveled around in the iconic Mondrian-inspired school bus. However that’s been changed to a family operating and traveling around New York’s five boroughs in a food truck, serving up treats and tunes.

Opening credits to the 1974 animated series:

What do you think of these reboot announcements? Are you happy to see old shows get a new treatment “for the modern day kids”? Or are you tired of yet more of Hollywood relying on old shows instead of making new things for kids (and adults) to enjoy? Let us know yours thoughts!

Persona 3 Reload Leaks and Is Coming to Xbox Consoles

When it comes to the summer season of gaming news, there’s always bound to be leaks. And one big surprise that was being saved for the Xbox Showcase has now been spoiled, despite being discussed and leaked in other places months prior. Fans of the Persona series can start getting excited at the confirmation of a Persona 3 remake coming to consoles and PC. But instead of being revealed during an official presentation, the news of the game comes from a posting on the official Atlus Instagram page that was quickly removed after being noticed. At this point, however, it’s all but officially confirmed now.

The leak about the game was shared online in places like Reddit before it was pulled down by Atlus. According to the leaked trailer, Persona 3 Reload is being developed by P-Studio with Unreal Engine for Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC. The game is also coming to Xbox Game Pass for Xbox series consoles, which may or may not be a day 1 release for Game Pass. In the leaked trailer, the game has a similar visual quality to that of Persona 5, with a heavily stylized look. Anyone that played the original Persona 3 will take notice of the blues and white in the color scheme that set the tone for the game.

From the trailer, the gameplay of Persona 3 Reload looks similar to the original game with some extra flair. The exploration and combat will be very familiar to long-time fans. The trailer shows many characters from Persona 3, as well as the infamous Velvet Room that you go to, with Igor sitting down with his assistant. The android Aegis opens up the trailer in a clever face reveal, but we get to see Yukari, Junpei, and everyone else in action at various points.

The music in the trailer seems to be a new remix from the game’s original soundtrack, which may indicate we’ll be getting more great music tracks remixed in the final release. At the end of the trailer, a release window of early 2024 is shown, which could mean a first or second-quarter release in the year. The trailer also doesn’t show the game coming to PlayStation 5, which may be from the trailer being set for an Xbox Showcase reveal. Nearly all of the Persona games have been on every platform, as well as both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Network.

Persona 3 Reload is a remake of the original Persona 3 that was for PlayStation 2, along with its expansion Persona 3 FES. The original game had a rerelease on the PlayStation Portable as Persona 3 Portable, which added new content and adjustments to the gameplay. With Persona 4 getting a rerelease not too long ago with Persona 4 Golden, it was only a matter of time before Atlus finally got to Persona 3 and remixed it for fans. The leaks on the ATLUS social media also happened to reveal Persona 5 Tactics, a tactical take on Persona 5 which is aiming for a November 17th release on Xbox consoles.

Mortal Kombat 1 Gameplay Revealed in Brutal New Trailer

With so much teased about Mortal Kombat 1 since its first unveiling by Netherrealm Studios, many have been anticipating a first look at its gameplay. During the Summer Game Fest presentation, the show had a strong opening with a world premiere trailer that showcased Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay, as well as what characters will appear on the roster. But that wasn’t all for the game. Geoff Keighley brought Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon onto the stage to talk about the game and show off more of the gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1, much to the delight of viewers who have been waiting to see more.

The best parts of the new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 revealed how exactly fights would look like in the game. While most things are visually similar to the previous game, there is a lot of detail in the backgrounds, as well as fresh new looks for many characters we see. As Ed Boon and Netherrrealm Studios discussed previously, this is an entirely new look at many characters we’ve seen in the series up to this point. The trailer shows Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Kenshi, Jax; and even Striker, Kitana, Millena, and Goro in combat. Every character sports a new look that still feels like their original versions from previous games but with a younger energy on display.

The matches featured in the trailer and in the short demo afterward gave everyone a glimpse at how the new Kameo fighters would work. After picking a fighter from the Character Select screen, each player will be able to choose a Kameo fighter that can assist them in the fight. These fighters can do anything from following up attacks to helping defend against incoming attacks from opponents.

In some spots of the trailer, we’re able to see Kameo fighters jump in to do X-Ray moves that deal massive damage, as well as what appears to be Fatalities. Some reactions to the trailer during the presentation compared the use of Kameo fighters to that of the Assists from games like Marvel vs Capcom or Dragon Ball FighterZ. In essence, Kameo fighters work very similarly but with a more brutal presentation that is fitting for Mortal Kombat 1.

The story of Mortal Kombat 1 is given a bit of shine in the new trailer with some cutscenes from what may be the game’s story mode. Fire God Liu Kang is going around to gather champions from throughout Earthrealm, which includes many warriors we see fighting. One fighter we don’t see in the trailer is Shang Tsung, who was prominently shown in the previous reveal trailer. Shang Tsung is a preorder bonus for the game, so it’s fair to think he will function as a playable and Kameo fighter much like the rest of the cast.

The discussion during Summer Game Fest after the reveal of the trailer allowed Ed Boon to talk more about Kameo fighters and what to expect in the final release. Not only will the roster of fighters be larger than what was shown, but Ed Boon mentioned that Jean Claude Van Damme will appear in the game as an alternate version of Johnny Cage. The original inspiration for the first Mortal Kombat was Jean Claude Van Damme, and things have finally come around full circle with his involvement in the game.

For fans of Mortal Kombat, there are a lot of great things to look forward to with Mortal Kombat 1. Technically and visually the game promises to be a great time that will not only move the series forward but remix what many love about Mortal Kombat games. Hopefully, a beta and demo are in store for the nearby future before Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19th, 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

Are you looking forward to playing Mortal Kombat 1 when it’s finally out? What did you think of the new gameplay trailer and what do you want to see next revealed for the game? Share your thoughts about everything in the comment section below!

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Trailer Takes Us Outside Midgar

During the Summer Game Fest presentation, Geoff Keighley closed out the show with a first look at the gameplay of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Many fans of Final Fantasy VII have been eagerly anticipating how the game would look overall as a sequel to 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake. At the end of that game’s story, players found themselves leaving Midgar after major events took place that affected the game’s protagonist Cloud Strife and his colleagues. Based on the original Final Fantasy VII story, the core group of heroes ventures out into the wild lands outside of Midgar, where the story takes many twists and turns. Now with the new gameplay reveal trailer, we have our first look at what to expect in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

The trailer begins with a grim look at some of the Final Fantasy VII cast in a dire situation, but quickly switches gears and showcases many interesting parts of the next game. Cloud and the group will be able to explore various locations within Gaia, many of which longtime Final Fantasy VII fans will recognize in the trailer that was key parts of the original story. Remember when Cloud and friends are told about the Ancients? We’ll finally get to see it in all of its glory with the visuals of Final Fantasy Remake. While venturing out into the world, Cloud and crew are pursuing the infamous Sephiroth, who is looking to bring doom upon everyone. Many of the shots in the trailer from cutscenes give great looks at Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and Red XIII in the aftermath of the previous game, as well as Sephiroth who looms over the entire story.

But what really stands out in the trailer is the first look at combat and exploration. Players will be running through fields and large environments, with some wildlife nearby as well, which bring to life the world of Gaia. But they won’t always be running around on foot. Like in the original Final Fantasy VII, players will be able to ride Chocobos in the world as they travel, which will definitely please many Final Fantasy fans who were hoping to see this in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Whether you’ll be able to capture or raise Chocobos in the game is not yet known, but you might have a good idea of what direction things are going if you’ve played the original game.

A noteworthy part of the trailer is the sections that show Red XIII in combat, as well as the inclusion of Yuffie in the group. For those that remember the extra downloadable content for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Yuffie was a playable character in her own story. Now she’ll finally be joining the main group in the story and in combat. Like before, every character in the party will be playable and be able to team up together for massive attacks.

In addition, more new enemies will appear, including the Elena and the Turks who will try to hinder the group’s journey. Depending on where the party finds themselves, many new challenges and vicious enemies will be waiting. The trailer briefly reveals a boss fight against a spawn of JENOVA while Sephiroth narrates, which appears to be a tough battle that everyone will have to face.

The final part of the gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at Summer Game Fest shows a reimagining of the iconic scene at Nibelheim, with Tifa trying to stop Sephiroth from getting to JENOVA. While we don’t get to see Zack Fair, Cloud, or anyone else from those events in the trailer, it’s a safe guess that we’ll see these events play out in a new way that will include them. The release window for the game is early 2024, with no month or day given for now. Hopefully, this means we’ll get to see and play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a lot sooner than later. Many Square Enix fans are eager to see the next chapter of this reimagining of Final Fantasy VII, and it’s looking very good so far.

What are your thoughts on the new gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Are you excited to play the game when it’s finally out in 2024? Leave us a comment down below and let your voice be heard!

Summer Game Fest Reveals Big Announcements and Gameplay

Although E3 is no longer around to hype up people for a summer celebration of video games, that doesn’t mean gamers will miss out on big reveals and new announcements. The Summer Game Fest presentation, hosted by Geoff Keighly, is picking up the slack that the Electronic Entertainment Expo is unable to carry this year. While the live presentation took place in downtown Los Angeles, the same place that E3 normally happens, gamers around the world were able to tune into the show online. What they were greeted with was a showcase of upcoming games for later in the year and a glimpse at the future from highly anticipated game releases.

The Summer Game Fest presentation had a large collection of games from a variety of studios, AAA publishers and indie game studios alike. The show opened up with the surprise reveal of Prince of Persia: The Lost Kingdom from Ubisoft. Many were wondering what would happen with the Prince of Persia series, after Ubisoft seemingly cancelled a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. But that doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing the last of the series, with this new game taking a more traditional 2D approach to its gameplay that harkens back to the origins of the Prince of Persia series.

One major highlight of the show was the world premiere of gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1. Geoff Keighly and Ed Boon took some time to talk about the game, detailing the new additions to the fighting system and the setting of the game’s story. The gameplay trailer showcased new characters that are playable, as well as gave everyone a first look at the Kameo fighters in action. For Mortal Kombat fans, this was an interesting presentation, and they won’t have to wait long to get their hands on it. Mortal Kombat 1 is set to release in September 2023.

Fans of PlayStation already had a ton of announcements in the weeks prior, but that didn’t mean they left without seeing a release date for Insomniac Games’ upcoming Spider-Man 2. The game is set to come out exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 20th, 2023. The show also gave a brief look at the upcoming Twisted Metal series being developed for the streaming service Peacock. Actor Will Arnett gives the voice of the murderous Sweet Tooth while actor Anthony Mackie struggles for survival against him in a brief brawl. It was a silly tease of the series, which may or may not pique the interest of fans of the game series.

Many third-party games and indie games also had some time to shine, with new seasonal content being released for games like Call of Duty Warzone and Fortnite very soon. Fans of JRR Tolkien are going to have a new game coming out called Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. The game is launching in the fall of 2023 and will be a survival game focused on the drawves, which takes you back to the Mines of Moria from The Lord of the Rings universe. Marvel Snap, the collectible card game, has a new mode called Conquest incoming for fans who have been enjoying the game since its release. And horror legend John Carpenter is releasing a new game called Toxic Commando, which has you facing down hordes of zombies.

Other interesting announcements from the Summer Game Fest presentation included some nuggets from SEGA. If you’re a classic Sonic the Hedgehog fan, Sonic Superstars will be right up your alley. The game has 3D renders of classic Sonic and friends, as well as cooperative modes that will have you speeding through various stages and utilizing new powers. On the flip side, Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name continues the Yakuza legacy in Fall 2023. Kazama Kiryu returns to bust heads and look cool in a new story that will have him facing legions of Yakuza other obstacles.

The show closed out with a big reveal of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Not only were viewers treated to story details about what is happening for Cloud and his friends, but also a good look at combat and exploration. Red XIII and Yuffie finally join the group, alongside many of the characters we saw in Final Fantasy VII Remake. The combat is flashy and fierce, with many big attacks being showcased from everyone. The story will take players into the world outside of Midgar, with a lot of the major events in Final Fantasy VII taking form in this reimagining of the classic tale. The game was also revealed to have an early 2024 release window.

There were many other games shown during the Summer Game Fest presentation, which included an abundance of free-to-play and MMO titles getting new content. But for the games that many were interested in seeing, Summer Game Fest delivered very well. Geoff Keighly was able to bring an interesting showcase to gamers in the wake of E3 2023 being cancelled. Whether this will be the new standard for a summer of gaming shows in the future is anyone’s guess, but there was no shortage of gaming interest and hype for this summer season.

What did you think of the Summer Game Fest presentation? Are you excited for any of the games that were shown? Leave us a comment down below and let us know your thoughts on everything!

Review: Arnold – A Netflix Overview of Schwarzenegger

It is universally agreed that Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the greatest action movie stars on the planet. His career is filled with many ups and downs, which happen to include a few iconic films and career moves along the way. For many, action movies would simply not be what they are today without the influence of Arnold Schwarzenegger. But the Netflix documentary series Arnold tries to paint a fuller picture of the man behind the catchphrases and big muscles, with varying degrees of success. The three-part series gives a good overview of the humble beginnings of the legendary career of the film industry’s larger-than-life celebrities, in more ways than one.

Each part of Arnold is divided into a different era of the movie star’s life and career, covering his origins in Austria to his role as the governor of California. Everything from his bodybuilding career highlights is touched on, as well as the beginnings of his movie career and massively impactful box office blockbusters. Littered throughout each part however are small portions of Arnold giving context to many of the big moments in his life, whether it was good or bad. Much of what Arnold speaks on does come off as inspirational and encouraging to those who have followed his career over the years, and in some parts maybe a little too motivational.

As much as the documentary includes all parts of the actor’s career and life, it does appear to hold back a few punches with some of the darker moments that impacted Schwarzenegger. We never get to hear from some of the people that were affected negatively by him when certain events took place, nor do we really see a counter point-of-view from anyone else despite Arnold and the series emphasizing people with different views coming together.

This is especially true when the series moves into the timeframe where Arnold and his ex-wife divorced during his political run, but it’s felt when Arnold is discussing his body-building years. Nobody who was around back then, the ones who are currently alive, offers another perspective about Arnold that isn’t similar to high praise. It makes parts of the story feel incomplete, even though there’s a lot of detail given by Arnold himself.

What this documentary series does very well is include a lot of archive footage of Arnold Schwarzenegger during the years it covers. This includes videos of Arnold working out in the 60s and 70s, body-building competitions, behind-the-scenes videos and interviews of Arnold, and so much more. It’s a great way further emphasize a lot of the points Arnold makes about what he was experiencing back then, especially when he’s giving a detailed account of the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe competitions he won.

There are a lot of great photos and home video clips of Arnold meeting many of the major body-building icons and movie stars of the decades, as well as details that Arnold himself gives that aren’t given in any other place. For the stars that Arnold speaks about who isn’t alive anymore, it gives more details about their interactions and how things came to be. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of insight and context that is not given by those who are still alive from those eras. The few major stars that offer their point of view on things include people like Sylvester Stallone, who was a major rival for Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the 80s. Everything else has to rely on Arnold’s word alone, which is good for fans but comes up short when giving the full outlook on everything.

When it comes to the movies that Arnold Schwarzenegger has made, the series luckily gets to have people like James Cameron, Linda Hamilton, and even Jamie Lee Curtis give their thoughts on the man behind the catchphrases. Nearly every blockbuster that Arnold has starred in gets highlighted and given details on the making and business aspects of it. Some of this stuff can probably be found in the extra features for some of these movies, but hearing it from Arnold himself and getting intricate details of what it was like filming them makes it worth another listen.

There are some moments in all three parts of the series that take moments to give a look at Arnold today, both in his quiet life at home and interactions with everyday people. The more random moments show Arnold feeding some of his animals, which feels far removed from the rest of the series. It has Arnold giving thoughts about how his career came to be and some more motivational thoughts to the viewer. But they are so far removed from the historical context of the rest of the series that they would’ve honestly been better off left out. Die-hard Arnold Schwarzenegger fans might still appreciate it, but they still feel very out of place.

As a whole, Netflix’s Arnold is a good watch that has plenty of Arnold Schwarzenegger goodness to enjoy. Looking back at the crazy Hollywood career of this mega-popular actor is a fun trip down memory lane. The extra thoughts and perspective from Arnold himself help give an extra layer to some of the big moments that the actor has been in the spotlight over the years, as well as the mindset of someone on top of the world from such humble beginnings. Although not a fully complete view on every detail and big event, the series still does a great job of covering all the important aspects of Arnold’s career and lifestyle. It’s a story about hard work, complete dedication, and enduring the changing tides that most viewers will enjoy watching.
