Review: Strays – Funny Dogs

There’s just something funny about dogs. Almost any kind of situation can be made even funnier when it’s given from a dog’s perspective. Strays is a raunchy comedy that takes the very simple concepts of revenge and daily life and makes a funny story about coming to terms with reality and moving on. But mixed in with that is a cavalcade of goofy situations and over-exaggeration of nearly everything, as seen through the eyes of a dog recently turned stray. Although there are a few stumbles throughout the film, the majority of its plot will have you laughing throughout at some of the most ridiculous things that dogs go through.

Strays follows a dog named Reggie who is treated horribly by his owner Doug. After a series of unfortunate events that are inadvertently caused by him, Reggie is left out in the middle of a city by Doug alone. By chance, he meets another stray dog named Bug, along with his friends Maggie and Hunter. After spending a short time with them, Reggie comes to realize how horrible his former owner treated him and vows to take revenge on Doug by biting off the one thing his own value. What follows is a journey that drops the whole pack into crazy situations that test their friendship, as well as some ridiculous moments of clarity.

A lot of the humor in Strays will push things far, going from silly to raunchy very fast. One moment the movie will have an entire conversation about dogs rolling around and relationships with humans, only to switch up to a crazy bit about masturbation. But the jokes, setups, and punchlines are surprisingly very funny. Even if you’re not a big fan of crude humor that pushes boundaries you’ll find a few things that are hilarious. It’s the fact that many of the conversations are happening between dogs makes the ridiculousness of it all seem even more outlandish than it should be, but still funny enough to stay for more.

Will Ferrell is the voice of Reggie, a dog who remains naive for the majority of the film until he comes to a big realization. His funniest moments come from innocent reactions and moments where he can play off any of the other dogs. But as he gets wiser to what is happening, there’s a boost of confidence and boldness that compliments his good nature. The other dogs that Reggie meets on his journey are just as goofy and funny as he is.

Randall Park and Isla Fisher are the voices of Hunter and Maggie; two dogs with a ton of sexual tension between them. One is a failed police dog forced into wearing a cone, while the other is a reserved dog with an incredible sense of smell. Both of them are funny companions that have their own quirks that linger throughout the story, with a few key moments that let them shine in a goofy, yet heartwarming fashion.

By far the best voice in the whole movie belongs to Jamie Foxx as Bug. Every line from him is delivered with a level of commitment that feels real, but incredibly funny in the best way possible. Between the snide remarks and reactions from him to other dogs, Bug is hilarious in almost every situation he finds himself in.

The times when the movie takes time to show some of the more mundane, Bug manages to make them funnier with his unexpected statements. Seeing a dog freak out over seeing its reflection is so much funnier when you’re hearing Jamie Foxx’s voice cuss out the reflection. While there are a few scenes where things get much more serious and emotional, they aren’t as strong as the scenes where comedy is the focus.

This is because the dramatic scenes in the movie are not as strong as everything else. Going from moments that are ridiculous and funny straight into drama can be jarring, but passable if the drama works out well. In Strays, however, some of the drama between the dogs comes off a bit forced and out of place. Some of the things that are brought up midway were addressed towards the beginning, so it’s weird to see them brought up again later. Had these scenes been given a better reason or set up for when they occur, it wouldn’t be that bad to include them as a break from the comedy. But as is they feel more like gaps in the comedy that mess with the momentum of the whole story.

But when the bigger things in Strays pay off, they really pay off. One thing Strays does well is wrapping up all of the details it brings up by the end. Jokes that are set up early on have a satisfying conclusion when the story comes to an end, with a few twists and turns along the way. At the same time, the movie also isn’t afraid to get graphic when it needs to be, not aimlessly. Certain jokes just wouldn’t work as well the movie wasn’t allowed to fully commit to how ridiculous the bits could be. And luckily, they’re great jokes that end up being hilarious.

Strays is a movie that is a lot better than you realize. Despite the few parts that don’t come together as well, the comedy is what makes this film work. The writing for the jokes is solid and will make just about anyone laugh, especially if you have even the slightest knowledge about dogs. Those who are not big fans of raunchy humor may not enjoy the movie as much as other people, but there is still plenty of great jokes that will click with anyone. It’s a tough world out there with many harsh reality checks, but as this movie shows, it’s so much funnier with dogs.

What do you think about Strays? Will you be checking it out anytime soon? What is your favorite kind of dog? Tell us your thoughts about everything down below in the comment section!

Discotek Media To Release First Half Of 70s Mech Anime ‘Mazinger Z’ On Blu-Ray

0

Discotek Media has announced that they would release the first forty-six episodes of the 1970s sci-fi mecha anime ‘Mazinger Z.’ Produced by Toei Animation, the series was based on the manga Go Nagai and ran for a total of ninety-two episodes directed by Tomoharu Katsumata.

This box set is being released as “Collection 1” and will feature the uncut version of the show in its original Japanese audio with English subtitles. The DVD box set is planned to be released on October 31, 2023, though it is available for pre-order on the Right Stuf Anime website.

They also released the box art:

Discotek describes the synopsis as follows,

“Koji Kabuto’s grandfather has discovered two resources which can save humanity: Photon Light Energy and the ultra-impregnable alloy Chogokin Z. However, Dr. Kabuto’s research is abruptly cut off when the evil Dr. Hell sends his trusted lieutenant, the bisected Baron Ashura, to assassinate him! Koji, now orphaned along with younger brother Shiro, swear revenge using Dr. Kabuto’s last and greatest invention: the super robot Mazinger Z!

Joined by Dr. Kabuto’s successor, Dr. Yumi, his daughter Sayaka, and her research robot Aphrodite A, Koji sets out to protect Japan from Dr. Hell’s menacing mecha monsters and ensure the peaceful work of the Photon Light Institute. Can Koji and Sayaka, along with local bully boy Boss, prevent this most dangerous of villains from running amok and conquering the world?”

The manga would run from October 1972 to September 1973 in the pages of the Shueisha magazine ‘Weekly Shōnen Jump’ though it would get released by Kodansha for their ‘TV Magazine’ in 1974.

In 1976, Consolidated Amusement Co. dubbed the first fifty-two episodes and would release them in Hawaiian theaters for children. A 1985 English dub from Three B. Productions Ltd. retitled the series ‘Tranzor Z’ and dubbed the first sixty-five episodes for TV syndication.

Ultra Magnus Joins Hasbro’s ‘Transformers: The Movie’ Toyline

It looks like the Transformers: The Movie line of action figures may be winding down. Several big-name characters have been released in the ’86 packaging or the Legacy line. However, one major Autobot has been noticeably missing. Finally, Ultra Magnus rolls into battle … only to fly to pieces.

Seriously. One of the selling features of Ultra Magnus is that you can break him apart just like when Galvatron messed him up on Junkion.

The $89.99 Autobot can be pre-ordered right now at Hasbro Pulse and is expected to arrive on November 1st. Thankfully, Hasbro didn’t recycle the War for Cybertron Ultra Magnus.

This one may be a totally new build. We’ll definitely review this one when it comes out.

However, the soldier-turned-leader isn’t the only Transformers ’86 figure coming out this Fall.

  • TRANSFORMERS STUDIO SERIES COMMANDER CLASS: This 9.5-inch collectible action figure is inspired by iconic movie scenes and designed with specs and details to reflect the Transformers movie universe
  • 2 ICONIC MODES: This Studio Series Transformers toy for 8 year old boys and girls features classic conversion between robot and semi trailer modes in 43 steps. Trailer can hold Deluxe Class figures (each sold separately, subject to availability)
  • AWESOME ACCESSORIES: Transformers figure comes with 4 blasters, 7 blast effects and a Matrix of Leadership accessory that can fit inside the figure’s chest. Accessories attach in both modes

Joining Ultra Magnus is the tiny Decepticon Frenzy. He’s just a recolor of the Rumble. The 3.5″ tall Transformer is $11.99. So … where’s Soundwave already?!

Another Autobot included in this wave is Ratchet. Yup, he’s a recolor of Ironhide, but with a different head. The pricing is getting a bit out of hand regarding these smaller figures. Ratchet is priced at $34.99 and is due out this November.

Lastly, Prowl and Ironhide were packaged together but not under the TF: TM line. Instead, the ill-fated Autobots came out in a two-pack with the Buzzworthy Bumblebee packaging. Weird.

Both Transformers feature battle damage, but Hasbro failed to include a smoldering head for Prowl. However, you get blaster effects parts to recreate Ironhide’s death at the hands of Starscream and Megatron.

The set is $54.99 and is available now via Hasbro and Target.

I highly doubt Hasbro will make a G1 Megatron figure or Astro Train. We will probably see Soundwave and Devastator in the future, but I can’t see several more waves focusing on the only good Transformers film.

BioWare Sheds 50 Employees, Claims “Quality” Is It’s “North Star”

0

Those hoping that BioWare could recuperate after the company’s last couple of games landed with a thud may not want to hear today’s news. On BioWare’s Blog, General Manager Gary McKay announced that the company is undergoing a change that will see around 50 roles being canned.

McKay stated that BioWare could only succeed if “we must shift towards a more agile and more focused studio. It will allow our developers to iterate quickly, unlock more creativity, and form a clear vision of what we’re building before development ramps up.

Apparently, the changes required mean several roles are being made obsolete. Which roles? That’s unknown.

The GM implies that this move is preemptive, possibly alluding to BioWare’s future projects or the company as a whole may be in trouble:

“We’ve chosen to act now in part to provide our impacted colleagues with as many internal opportunities as possible. These changes coincide with a significant number of roles that are currently open across EA’s other studios. Impacted employees will be provided with professional resources and assistance as they apply for these positions.”

Those finding themselves being handed pink slips may still find employment elsewhere in EA, but it’s not a guarantee. Considering the quality of BioWare’s past few games has been a major issue, this isn’t filling me with hope that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf won’t be negatively affected.

“Our commitment to quality continues to be our North Star,” says McKay. Those are hard words to live by when one of BioWare’s games launched so many unintentional memes. The last time I covered a post from the General Manager, he failed to bring up the issues that were bringing the company down.

The past decade has not been kind to BioWare. We all started worrying in ’07 when EA bought out the studio behind Knights of the Old Republic and the mostly great Mass Effect Trilogy. Quality issues began appearing in the third ME title, and then there was the Andromeda fiasco and the colossal bait-n-switch known as Anthem.

EA’s habit of infecting studios under its umbrella with a terminal disease may be slow working, but BioWare has been showing symptoms for some time. What was the last great BioWare title you remember? Was it made before 2012? Were sequels to the studio’s best games infested with terrible DLC and multiplayer? The hallmarks of EA’s sickness were there for a long time.

During Season Two, Bosch and Chandler work together to seek out a killer who just might find them first. As a result of being kidnapped by a masked assailant, Maddie Bosch’s law enforcement career hangs in the balance. The FBI scrutinizes Carl Rogers’ murder and places Bosch and Chandler under suspicion.”

Season two is based on the novel ‘The Crossing.’

On the day Himari is given permission to temporarily leave the hospital, her brothers take her out to the aquarium to celebrate, where the family’s supposed fate is brought forth with her sudden collapse. However, when Himari is inexplicably revived by a penguin hat from the aquarium’s souvenir shop, the hand of fate continues to tick faithfully forward.

With her miraculous recovery, though, comes a cost: there is a new entity within her body, whose condition for keeping her fate at bay sends the boys on a wild goose chase for the mysterious “Penguin Drum.” In their search, the boys will have to follow the threads of fate leading from their own shocking past and into the lives of other wishmakers vying for the Penguin Drum, all hoping to land upon their chosen destiny.”

PlayStation’s Portable Screen Gets A Name and Price

The PlayStation Portal was teased earlier this year. It looked like a tablet with two halves of a PS5 controller glued on.

Was it a new portable system? Was it the next Vita? Nah, it was just a way to stream games from your PlayStation 5.

The device was previously known as Project Q and looked suspiciously like the Wii U controller. We asked a load of questions when the device was first shown off, and it seems we finally have our answers.

In an official post on the PlayStation Blog, Hideaki Nishino (Senior VP) of Sony let us know that this new handheld would set PS5 owners back $199. Though pricey for something tethered to the console via Wi-Fi, the PlayStation Portal remote player will feature a few impressive stats.

The Portal will include the following features:

  • Adaptive triggers
  • Haptic feedback
  • An 8″ LCD screen with 1080p resolution.
  • 60fps display
  • 3.5mm audio jack

There are some concessions, though. PSVR2 games that need a headset to play are not supported. That’s a given, but the next one is a real pain. PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming games are NOT supported. No double streaming for you!

Another roadblock for some players will be when it comes to the Wi-Fi requirements. The Portal isn’t precisely demanding when it comes to speed, but you’ll need to meet the following at least if you want to stream from your library of games:

“Requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use. For a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended.”

Oddly, Sony does not give us any idea of the kind of latency we should expect from the Portal. Many of the other questions we asked before are still unanswered:

  • Will the device feature an app that lets you connect to the console even if you’re on Wi-Fi in another city?
  • What is the battery life?
  • Will it support Wi-Fi 6E or 7?
  • Is the touchpad built into the screen or on the back of the device, as with the PS Vita?
  • What is the latency?
  • Is there any proprietary tech that allows for better performance over Wi-Fi?
  • Will there be a DualSense Edge version?
  • How much does it weigh?
  • How hot does it get?
  • What are the I/O ports (USB-C or something else)?

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Dejarik Figures – Impressive or Failure?

Do you remember watching the first Star Wars movie and seeing R2-D2 and Chewbacca play a futuristic version of chess on the Millennium Falcon? That scene has a famous line from C3PO, where he tells R2 to “let the Wookie win” instead of beating him. The game they are playing is called dejarik, a holographic version of chess (also known as holochess) that was popular among many races around the galaxy. The game was commonly played on starships and in homes for a long time, way before the Clone Wars and the Galactic Empire. For any big Star Wars fan, it’s a real treat to see a replica of the pieces in the game. But now you can own a full set of dejarik figures that are available in Disney’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.

If you’re able to make the trip out to Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World or Disneyland, you’ll be able to purchase any of the two sets of dejarik figures. They are exclusive to the parks, so you can’t just visit a department store outside of Disney and pick them up, which makes them pricier than most other collectibles. Each set will set you back around $130 total at regular price, so you’ll need to dish out a lot of credits to have the complete collection. But are these figures worth picking up?

The one thing you’ll notice about either set of figures is the high quality of them. Each set comes with four figures that are meant for display as decorative items. You can’t really play with these figures as toys, so there’s no articulation or movement for them. But as display pieces, they are very good-looking and have a high level of authenticity to what you’d see in the film. The level of detail on the creatures’ bodies and their expressions are very interesting, with variants of color on each that make them stand out from one another. The figures are able to stand on their own with light velvet pieces on their feet, so they’ll stay in place when put onto a table or mantle.

The packaging for both sets of dejarik figures is pretty basic but cushioned to protect the figures when inside. There are markings on the box that open up, which are similar to what you’d find when roaming around Black Spire Outpost or inside Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. There’s nothing else included in the packaging other than the figures themselves, not even a sheet with an explainer of dejarik or any certificate about the figures.

For some collectors, this might feel like a meager package compared to most other statues and collectibles. Considering the amount of lore and history that the dejarik creatures have to the Star Wars franchise, one could hardly blame them.

A major disappointment of the sets is how neither one comes with a board or base to put the figures on. You don’t get any sort of dejarik board or sheet to go along with them, which seems like an awkward exclusion. Most Star Wars fans would love to have the dejarik creatures with a board that is authentic to what they saw in the movie.

And while Disney does have a dejarik set you can actually play with that comes with a board, and has dual functionality as a checkerboard, it’s not associated with these figures. There also isn’t a separate board that fans can purchase to go with these figures, which is a big oversight. Not having one available is practically leaving money on the table for Disney, which is very unlike them with the massive amount of options they have for merchandise and collectibles.

For the value you’re getting in each set of dejarik figures, and what isn’t around, one might argue that the price point is a little steep. But if you fancy yourself a collector of Star Wars items and want to get a good souvenir from Galaxy’s Edge, these dejarik figures are a nice option to have. But getting both sets together is much more preferable than getting just one, as it’ll make no sense to have only half of a complete set of dejarik pieces. Hopefully, Disney can offer an option of an authentic dejarik board that can be purchased to place these pieces on, rather than forcing fans to look for other third-party options to go with.

What do you think of the Dejarik Figure sets from Galaxy’s Edge? Would you pick up these figures and add them to your own Star Wars collection? What other items do you want to see made for fans to buy at Galaxy’s Edge? Tell us your thoughts about everything down below in the comments!

Nightdive Studios Remastering Star Wars Dark Forces and Turok 3

Nightdive Studios has been known to remaster and rerelease classic games across various platforms. They were responsible for remastering the first two Turok Dinosaur Hunter games for consoles and PC, as well as DOOM 64. Anyone that plays a lot of FPS games or is a big fan of shooters will know about Nightdive Studios. So what will their next retro revival project be? How about completing the Turok trilogy and then taking things to a galaxy far, far away? Sounds like a great plan.

In two new announcement trailers released during Gamescom 2023, Nightdive Studios is remastering two first-person shooter titles, one for the Turok series and one for Star Wars. The first is a remastering of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion for all platforms. Originally released on the Nintendo 64 back in 2000, Turok 3 is the third game in the trilogy of Turok titles that released for the console, building up the lore of the series even further.

The new version of Turok 3 will receive upgraded visuals, enhanced lighting, and re-tweaked gameplay; much like the first two Turok games. Nightdive is aiming to have the game run at 120 frames-per-second and output at 4K resolution. Fans of the series will be able to complete the trilogy of remasters. No specific release date was given for Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered, but Nightdive did confirm in the trailer that the game would be coming later in 2023.

The second remaster coming from Nightdive Studios is in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. A fully remastered version of Star Wars Dark Forces for PC and consoles, with the new title Star Wars Dark Forces Remaster. The game will also have 4K resolution and run at 120FPS, but will also come with other features for this new version. Dark Forces Remaster will have advanced 3D rendering, trophies and achievements on respective platforms, and modern gamepad support. Cutscenes for the game will also get remastered and look cleaner than what was seen in the original game. Other features for Dark Forces Remastered were promised but weren’t revealed in the trailer. The original version of Star Wars Dark Forces was released for PC in 1005, and later the first PlayStation console with extra content.

Nightdive Studios says that specific release dates for both titles will come at a later date. Currently, Steam players on PC can add Turok 3 Remastered to their wishlist now, but Dark Forces Remaster does not have a Steam page live yet. If both of these games turn out successful among their respective fan bases, Nightdive Studios will continue their hot streak of giving new life to classic games that people love to go back to and play.

What do you think of the announcements for Turok 3 Remastered and Star Wars Dark Forces Remaster? Will you be checking out either game on any platform when they’re out? Which was your favorite to play back in the day? Let us know your thoughts about everything down below in the comment section!
