‘Komi Can’t Communicate’ Is Getting A Live-Action Adaption

Author and illustrator Tomohito Oda’s coming-of-age comedy manga ‘Komi Can’t Communicate’ has been published by Shogakukan since May 2016 and has gone on to be published in Weekly Shōnen Sunday. Now it is getting an adaption as a live-action television drama on the Japanese station NHK General TV.
NHK also announced a partial cast list for the eight-episode limited series along with a promotional image.

Crunchyroll reports that “25-year-old Philippine-born actress/fashion model Elaiza Ikeda plays its main heroine Shouko Komi. As an actress, she is well-known for her portrayal as Kirari Momobami in the Kakegurui live-action series. Also, the male protagonist Hitohito Tadano, who is a high school student in the original manga story, is played by 35-year-old Takahisa Masuda, a member of Johnny & Associates’ male idol group NEWS. Toichiro Ruto, who recently attracted attention for his work on the gay drama Ossan’s Love, serves as director on a script by Fumie Mizuhashi.”
Elaiza Ikeda expressed her excitement for the role.
“The more the world is overload with information, the more we compare ourselves to someone else,” she said. “Everyday, we struggle with the definition of “normal” that keeps changing. This is a story that gently scoops up those precious feelings that we tend to leave behind in our busy lives. Know yourself, communicate, know and respect others. Enjoy the fact that we are different. I hope you will be healed by Komi-san and her friends who meet their precious friends while repeating these things. I’m under pressure because I’ve loved this series since the first volume was released, but I’ll do my best to put everything I can into this drama. Please look forward to it!”
The premise begins, “On her first day attending the elite Itan Private High School, the main setting of the story, Shouko Komi immediately receives an overwhelming surge in popularity due to the unprecedented, stoic beauty and refined elegance her classmates perceive her to possess. However, only Hitohito Tadano, an exceedingly average schoolboy assigned to the seat next to hers, is able to have the opportunity to discover that Komi has serious issues in communicating with others. Tadano sets out to help Komi on her quest to find 100 friends.”
The series has had over twenty-one volumes and was released in English through Viz Media. The anime is produced by OLM and is scheduled to be released in October 2021.

The Journey to Requiem Part 1

0

The cartoon series, which aired from 1983-1985, did not have a completed ending as was the case with many animated shows of that era. A script, intended to be the final episode for the third season, and potential series finale, called “Requiem”, was written by screenwriter Michael Reaves, who was a regular contributor to the tv series, Dungeons & Dragons. He would later make the script public in 2003 on his website, allowing fans to see, for the first time ever, what the fate of the kids were after the last produced episode aired. In 2006, BCI Eclipse released a collector’s set edition that had a radio show audio version of the script, complete with voice actors, sound effects, and background music. The only original voice actor to reprise their role was Katie Leigh, who voice Sheila from the tv series.

In 2009, a fan from Brazil named Reinaldo Rocha created a comic book version, in Portuguese, that follows the script, giving visual life to what was only imagined through words. Another fan in 2015 translated the fan comic into English and combined the radio show with the comic book into a video, which you can view here:

But there was still that cliffhanger that left fans wondering whether they went home or stayed in the realm. In May of 2019, a French multinational automobile manufacturer called Renault, released an ad promoting their Kwid Outsider car. It became an instant sensation with how close and faithful they were to the original series, right down to the costumes and each characters’ mannerisms and personalities. At the Effie Awards in Brazil, Renault won Advertiser of the Year 2019. See the Best Effie Awards Case Study, along with the ad, in this video:

As an exclusive extra, they also released 8 extra clips, which highlight each Kwid Outsider feature. The 8 clips have been compiled in this video, in Portuguese language:

Fans around the world finally got to see the kids go home. It was a very exciting time and it showed Hollywood, especially, that creating something for the fans is highly possible to be done right and done well. And to be received so well with highly successful return profits.

But the story of the journey home did not end there.

Neil Gaiman’s ‘Anansi Boys’ Is Getting A Miniseries At Amazon Studios

0

‘Anansi Boys’ is a fantasy novel written by English author Neil Gaiman. It exists in the same literary universe as the novel ‘American Gods.’ The plot follows “Mr. Nancy, an incarnation of the West African trickster god Anansi. He dies, leaving twin sons, who in turn discover one another’s existence after being separated as young children. The novel follows their adventures as they explore their common heritage,” according to a synopsis on Wikipedia.
Amazon Studios has announced that they are adapting the novel into a six-part miniseries that is to be filmed in Scotland. They made the announcement on their website.
“Amazon Studios today announced that it has ordered a series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s international best-selling novel Anansi Boys,” they wrote. “Anansi Boys will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. The six episode limited series will begin shooting in Scotland later this year.”
Amazon continued, “Based on Gaiman’s novel of the same name, Anansi Boys follows Charlie Nancy, a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting but making it a lot more dangerous.”
They also released a promotional image along with the announcement.

Hanelle M. Culpepper will serve as an executive producer as well as direct the pilot episode.
Gaiman, who is also serving as an executive producer and showrunner, expressed his enthusiasm for the project.
“Anansi Boys began around 1996, from a conversation I had with Lenny Henry about writing a story that was diverse and part of the culture that we both loved,” he explained. “I wrote a novel, an (I hope) joyous and funny book about a dead god and his two sons, about birds and ghosts and beasts and cops, based in Caribbean and African tales. It was my first number one NYT Bestseller, and went on to become a beloved and award winning book.”
Gaiman added, “We are trying to make a new kind of show with Anansi Boys, and to break ground with it to make something that celebrates and rejoices in diversity both in front of and behind the camera. I’m so thrilled it’s happening and that people will be meeting Mr. Nancy, Charlie and Spider, the Bird Woman and the rest of them.”
The series has yet to receive a release date.

AnnaSophia Robb Discusses True Crime Medical Drama ‘Dr. Death’

‘Dr. Death’ tells the story of Christopher Duntsch, a Texas doctor who was accused of criminal negligence and later of murder. The medical professional, played by Joshua Jackson, had his story recounted on a Wondery podcast and was adapted by Peacock for a streaming miniseries. The cast is rounded out by Kelsey Grammer, Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater, and AnnaSophia Robb, the latter of whom plays the Dallas district attorney who finally decides to prosecute Duntsch.
Robb recently sat down with Collider to discuss ‘Dr. Death’ and what it was like learning the medical jargon surrounding the case.
While preparing for the role, the ‘Soul Surfer’ actress talked about meeting her real-life counterpart.
“I was able to speak with the real person, Michelle Shughart, and ask her questions and she was so kind and very open and candid with me. That was the foundation. It was our conversation and knowing her thought process to the whole thing and her motto. Her work motto is, do the right thing,” Robb explained.
“When I think of prosecutors, you think of these sort of like top hard, badass people, who want to lay down the law. That’s how I imagined them,” she continued. “But her approach is very empathetic. Her approach is very much, do the right thing. What is the appropriate form of justice? She thought, Duntsch gave these patients a life sentence, I’m going to give him a life sentence. Like, this guy, we need to get him into prison, but we also need to get as much justice as possible for the victims and their families. So that was her main focus. And it was super critical for me as an actor to be able to just talk with her.”
‘The Way, Way Back ‘ added that she had a bit of difficulty learning the medical jargon.
“So, when I learned it, I was memorizing it, and it just wasn’t sticking. And I would say, I don’t know what I’m saying, I started this in the wrong way,” Robb said. “And so I jumped on the phone with one of the neurosurgeons, who was advising.”
Robb continued, “And once I knew what was happening, and once I talked with our resident neurosurgeon, just to double check, and knew where everything was and what happened and what should have happened, then it was all visual for me. I was able to learn it immediately because I could visualize what had happened.”
‘Dr. Death’ is now streaming on Peacock.

Shazam Goes To The Underworld In New DC Comic Book

0

Billy Batson is heading down the depths of Hell… literally. DC Universe is bringing a new Shazam miniseries that is tied to ‘Teen Titans Academy’ and ‘Future State: Shazam!’ The part-four miniseries is being written by Tim Sheridan, who spoke to DC Nation.
“Billy Batson could be—could be—the key to the whole thing! Future State showed us where the Teen Titans Academy path is heading: an unnamed student, with the help of the mysterious Red X, will be responsible for unleashing the Four Riders of the Apocalypse from Hell,” he said according to DC Nation. “That itself would be bad enough, but then we looked even further into the future to see how Billy’s innocence, typically his greatest strength, can and will be used against him in order to bring about a threat even larger and more consequential than Armageddon!”
“That future is our prologue and it brings us to Shazam!, where we’re now asking: Is tomorrow written in stone,” he continued. “Or is it possible that Billy can upend fate and bring about a better outcome than the one we’ve seen? That’s a lot of responsibility for anyone, let alone a kid Billy’s age.”
“Like every teenager, Billy’s life is changing fast. How many of the carefree days of childhood has Billy spent in the body of a full-grown adult, with duties far greater than those of a less mighty mortal? A lot. Maybe too many,” DC Nation added. “The unfamiliar place we find Billy in when we begin this series is that he’s growing up…for real, not just by saying a magic word. And, because he’s just like the rest of us, that’s freaking scary for him.”
On working with Clayton Henry, Sheridian had nothing but praise for the artist.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a cleaner version of that than I have with Clayton,” he explain. “And then, if I may say, particularly beginning with Shazam! #2, where I feel like our styles really melded to produce that harmony.”

English Voice Cast Revealed For ‘Fena: Pirate Princess’

0

The Crunchyroll and Adult Swim original anime ‘Fena: Pirate Princess’ has been announced by their parent company Warner Media. Inspired by Shojo manga, the series “follows the high seas journey of Fena Houtman as she evades pirates and other dangers and must rely on a crew of Japanese samurai to unlock her family secrets.”
According to a press release, the English dub cast includes:

  • Fena Houtman will be voiced by Brittany Cox: A positive, cheerful orphan despite her traumatic past. Known for her pale skin and glowing silver hair.
  • Yukimaru will be voiced by Robb Moreira: The introverted, katana-wielding bodyguard of the Houtman family. He is extremely protective of Fena.
  • Shitan will be voiced by Nicholas Corda: This handsome, elite warrior can kill with his bow and arrow—or his looks. Though on the surface he seems aloof, he greatly values his friends.
  • Karin will be voiced by Anjali Kunapaneni: Raised by a family of blacksmiths, Karin geeks out over technology like her rifle, which she uses to great effect in battle.
  • Enju will be voiced by Brandon Winckler: Kaede’s elder twin. They both use a spear and wakizashi in battle, they’re both friendly and mischievous, but Enju feels he’s more dependable than his younger brother.
  • Kaede will be voiced by Darrel J Delfin: Enju’s younger twin. They both use a spear and wakizashi in battle, they’re both friendly and mischievous, but Kaede feels he’s more manly than his elder brother.
  • Tsubaki will be voiced by Alan Lee: The oldest and most mature member of the group, he manages everyone’s wild energy. He’s also the cook, but when he fights, he uses a short ninja sword.
  • Makaba will be voiced by Thomas E Wynn: This mountain of a boy prefers fighting in close quarters with brass knuckles. When he’s not fighting, he’s kind-hearted and mild-mannered.
  • Salman will be played by Frank Todaro. An older knight who was once called “Salman the Onslaught” for being so deadly with a spear. He’s known Fena since she was a girl as he served the Houtman family for some time.
  • Otto will be voiced by Doug Stone. Another older knight who served the Houtman family and possessed an intimidating nickname in his younger days—”Otto the Blitz” for his quick swordplay.

The swashbuckling samurai anime is set to premiere on August 14.

NECA Reveals Tons of Toys From TMNT, Gremlins, and More!

NECA revealed several, and I mean several new action figures from several different franchises. TMNT, Gargoyles, Gremlins, Chucky, Halloween, Creepshow … the list kept going and going!
One of those reveals was for Gargoyle’s Demona. We covered the character’s teaser from a few weeks ago at PnP. The images coming from Figures.com are pretty low res, but they’ll work until the NECA releases something official. Demona comes with only a few accessories and one alternative sinister head with red eyes.

NECA
I called it! I knew NECA was going to move onto Secret of the Ooze after the Hamato Yoshi set. The company had already released nearly every character from the ’90 TMNT movie. So where else was there to go? Don’t worry; Casey Jones is still on the way.
Now we get some more fun stuff. The sequel Shredder comes with the giant mutated flower and the more evil-looking helmet.
NECA
I didn’t see Vanilla Ice anywhere, but we do get the underutilized Super Shredder. He looks a tad more muscular than Kevin Nash, but I’m all for exaggerating the villain’s features. I mean, we only saw him for a couple of seconds. Look at those quad muscles! Oh, what could have been…
NECA
Straight out of 1987, the Channel 6 News crew is getting some much-needed representation in a toy line. Burne Thompson, Vernon Fenwick, Irma, and … mutated April O’ Neil? Yeah, I remember that episode, and we all know what demographic this toy will appeal to.
Other figures from the cartoon shown off included Antrax & Scumbug, Dirtbag & Groundchuck, and Wingnut & Screwloose.
Shiloettes of Tokka and Rahzar were shown, too. Another character who was kept in the shadows was Fugitoid.
NECA
NECA is continuing the Gremlins line, too. Along with Brain Gremlin from the sequel, we’ll also be seeing a hardhat Gremlin and a dynamite/explosives Gremlin.
NECA
The other properties include The Thing, Halloween II, Creepshow (1982), The Boys, Chucky, and the King Features comic book original Flash Gordon. Click here to check out the rest of the images Figures.com was able to capture.

‘Great White’ Star Opens Up About New Shark Horror Flick

Former ’30 Rock’ actress Katrina Bowden is set to star in Hollywood’s latest shark horror film directed by Martin Wilson. It is from Shudder and RLJE Films. The movie is about a couple on an ocean tour that goes wrong when a pair of great white sharks attack the people on the tour.
The ‘ Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ star recently sat down with SyFy Wire to talk about the film and why it stands out as a shark movie.
“We wanted to focus on the fact that there’s a lot of isolation and that is horrifying on its own without sharks involved. We wanted to really focus on those quiet moments in the movie and give the audience that feeling of total helplessness and despair,” Bowden explained. “I think those moments in the movie do really make the big jump scares and big action scenes much more impactful because you don’t know when they’re going [to] happen.”
When audiences think about a shark film, Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster ‘Jaws’ comes to mind. There have been similar movies about shark attacks, but Bowden explains why this movie is unique among shark horror films.
She continued, “’Great White’ does a really great job of flipping the typical shark genre on its head in that the people who die may not be who you expect to die, and the order and way in which people who die do die, is interesting in itself and kind of leaves you on the edge of your seat because not everyone dies on accident.”
Bowden added, “Some movies you go in knowing who is going to die, but I think ‘Great White’ does a good job of keeping you guessing.”
She also expressed her appreciation for the process of working on the film.
“There is something kind of fun about doing a thriller-horror type of movie — especially in the shark genre,” she said.
You can see ‘Great White’ in theaters or on-demand.

Marvel Comics Announces New Spider-Man Comic Books

0

Marvel Comics announced that the new arc will feature Peter Parker’s demise in the Marvel Universe. As he faces a life and death situation, his clone Ben Reilly will take over the webs to help stop the bad guys.
“Peter Parker and Ben Reilly Swing into Action on Arthur Adams’ ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #75 Cover,” they write in a press release. “Both swing in—and only one will swing out! See the covers for October’s issues of ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ here!”
They continue, “This October, an all-star creative team is set to take AMAZING SPIDER-MAN beyond your wildest expectations! This new era will see bold changes brought to the Spider-Man mythos, beginning with the return of Ben Reilly. Fans can see him joining forces with Peter Parker on the newly revealed cover of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #75!”
Ben Reilly is not the only thing new about Peter Parker’s New York life. Marvel Comics recently announced they are going back to Parker’s college days with ‘Spider-Man: Non-Stop’ which is entering its second issue.
“The setting is New York City in NON-STOP SPIDER-MAN (2021) #2, the second issue in a fan-favorite run by Joe Kelly, Chris Bachalo, Marcio Menyz, and more,” Marvel explains. “Set against a backdrop of skyscrapers, helicopters, and huge rumbling cars, Spider-Man: Peter Parker scrappily web-swings across Manhattan to protect his fellow students at Empire State University. And, with this week’s issue, some familiar faces introduce their fists to Spider-Man’s face as the plot thickens like a brick of plastic explosives. Something horrible is happening to Spider-Man’s friends. And their current fates are a ticking time bomb.”
Marvel Comics is also bringing back the scenario where Peter Parker decides to keep the alien symbiote that would eventually become Venom, a major villain. They seek to expand on this story-arc in ‘Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow.’
“What if Peter Parker became Venom? Peter Parker once put on an alien suit that nearly destroyed his life—but what if he’d never taken it off? Ignoring every warning, Spidey embraces the dark symbiote,” Marvel Comics said. “Haunted by terrible nightmares and exhausted by an endless barrage of bad guys, Peter can’t seem to catch a break these days. So when the Hobgoblin attacks, he finds a hero at the end of his rope… and vulnerable to new dark impulses. Spider-Man is about to change his rules—but is it truly Peter who is in charge? Creative powerhouses Chip Zdarsky, Pasqual Ferry, and Matt Hollingsworth bring you a terrifying tale of a Peter Parker possessed and on the edge.”
While fans of the 90s and early 2000s will be happy to see Ben Reilly return to the main scene, it is curious the expansion of Spider-Man titles.
